For the first time I can remember, this permanent A list group who had one of the greatest debut albums of all time back in the day, is using a ghostwriter to help with new songs. Apparently sobriety means writer's block in this group.
I thought guns n' roses. Appetite for Destruction is considered one of the best debuts of all time. I agree. Guns are over played but that album blew my mind when I was 13 years old. Sad that is is all about money nowadays and ghost writers....oh dear.
Brayson is kinda right to a degree - also see Aaron Sorkin and his inspired writing and cocaine issues.
I also think with great success comes a degree of lethargy so maybe they are not as inspired to create new music and more resigned to the "machine" of the music industry.
Greatest debut album makes me think of GnR for sure but I'm not quite willing to give this permanent A status. If they had stuck together longer they would've been legendary, but they imploded too soon IMO.
This sounds like GNR but I'm not sure it matters. Bands today make money from touring (ticket sales, merchandise, meet and greets etc.) but they generally need an album to promote as an excuse for a tour (unless they're doing a Vegas residency or something like that). Therefore, what is on the album and who wrote it is somewhat irrelevant - it's unlikely they're trying to recapture the success and creative magic of their earlier work but need a half-decent record to tour. GNR fans will show up to shows to hear Welcome to the Jungle and will just patiently wait or take a bathroom break during new material - whether or not Slash or Axl actually wrote it.
Interesting comment from Andy about pearl jam. Yes, they have a new album coming out and the 1st single is very new wave - think the human league. sounds nothing like pearl jam. their debut album ten is a classic. Went downhill from there.... has been ever since.
I was there in the mix @ Greenday's signing with WB. There Billy stood in glory (sounding divine) on stage with his GF's nightgown and twisted teeth. I knew things would never be the same for them- at least in a "maintaining your soul" kind of way. #long.live.Gilman
I don’t think it’s GNR . Their first album was out for a year and a half before it got back g. That was appetites for destruction. Lies was the EP after that which was better than Appetite.
greenday?
ReplyDeleteGuns N’ Roses??
ReplyDeleteAerosmith? Eagles?
ReplyDeleteAs long as we get some good sensible songs, I really don't mind Ghostwriters!
ReplyDelete"Sensible songs"? 😂
DeleteThere's no shame there, even Stephen King's work suffered after he got sober. Sometimes you have to touch madness to find greatness.
ReplyDeletecoldplay? their first album was amazing. Dont know if they have sobriety issues.
ReplyDeleteMust be Guns & Roses. Green Day makes more sense, but breakout Dookie was their third album.
ReplyDeleteMost song writing suffers from sobriety. Sad but true.
ReplyDelete@SW Lookout!Records was a tiny indie label..Dookie (on Reprise) was their first major label release/breakout album

ReplyDelete@tricia still should not be considered a debut.
ReplyDeleteMaroon 5. Which is really more like Adam and the Drum Machine.
ReplyDeleteIt's GnR they just announced a tour for later in the year, so they must be doing some new music for it.

The Strokes, new album produced by Rick Rubin.
ReplyDeleteThe Strokes did have a great debut album, but permanent A list is a bit of a stretch.
ReplyDeleteEither GNR or Aerosmith. Keeping in mind Steven Tyler wrote most all of their songs, if not all of them.
ReplyDeleteMD has it w/ GNR I believe.
ReplyDeleteSteven Tyler is held together by strings and paper mache, eventually he's going to be like the car at the end of The Blues Brothers.
ReplyDeleteAerosmith
ReplyDeleteFleetwood Mac

ReplyDelete*give THEM permanent A status etc

ReplyDeleteThis isn't GNR. Slash and Duff are both brilliant songwriters while sober. TONS of sober-written material with other projects.
ReplyDeleteRed Hot Chili Peppers
ReplyDeleteChili Peppers weren't big until after Blood Sugar Sex Magick, which was their fifth album.
Deleteit's hard to write great songs when for the last twenty years your life has revolved around being fabulously rich and turning up late to concerts
ReplyDeleteFor some reason I thought of Van Halen. I know they're looking for a bassist...
ReplyDeleteVan Halen? Yesterday was the 42nd anniversary of their phenomenal debut Van Halen Van Halen.... 42 years! You're welcome......
ReplyDeleteLong shot, but what about Pearl Jam? They have a new album coming out.
ReplyDeletePrevagen and fish oil works good.

ReplyDeleteGNR always used a co writer named West Arkeen, up until he passed away. It was never a secret.

ReplyDeleteGNR right?
ReplyDeleteMetallica
ReplyDeletenot the strokes, hes been sober 11-12 years, and had many great album while sober
ReplyDeleteOasis popped into mind. Supposedly Liam has been hinting at it, though it sounds like Noel may still not be having it,
