Blind Item #2
A movie is going to be released later this year. A remake of a film from a few decades ago that's considered a classic in its genre. The remake is being produced by an A+ list writer/director/producer who started in another job and is well regarded in that same genre. There was a test screening for the movie recently. The movie was not liked by the audience. No one is talking about it because it is apparently bad and will need to be reworked.
Woody Allen?
ReplyDeleteFantasy Island?
ReplyDeleteHe’s doing “Take The Money and Run” reboot I think
ReplyDeleteJon Favreau maybe?
ReplyDeleteTop Gun
ReplyDeleteWest Side Story. Speilberg.
ReplyDeleteI saw still photos of this months ago and no way in hell anyone under the age of 80 will want to see that thing.
DeleteGhostbusters
ReplyDeletePossible guesses:
ReplyDeleteDune
West side story
Death on the Nile
The witches
No idea which one got tested. My vote on west side story.
It could also be Dune, to my chagrin. We finally have the technology to pull the story off but it’s a dense story.
This has to be Spielberg / West Side Story.
ReplyDeleteSpeilberg is famous for directing - WWS would his first musical.
Candyman and Jordan peele is producing
ReplyDeleteVilleneuve with Dune.
ReplyDelete+1. Think the genre clue gives it to Peele. Sometimes the it, golden-boys of the moment hit snags.
ReplyDeleteSometimes the "it" folks need to steal ideas from no-names and then give themselves the credit.
DeleteThat was +1 to MD
ReplyDeleteGhostbusters was already re-inveted and TOP GUN MAVERICK is a sequel not a remake. Fantasy Island looks ENTIRELY re-done and very tongue in cheek and is it considered a classic. WEST SIDE STORY it is!
ReplyDeleteAll-female Apocalypse Now.
ReplyDeleteWest Side Story was way longer ago than "a few decades."
ReplyDeleteI think Derp has the right list. Now which of those best matches with an A+ list writer/director/producer who started in another job and is well regarded in that same genre?
ReplyDeleteWest Side Story
ReplyDeleteSpielberg displayed major balls going after this movie. Special effects can be covered, spliced, and inserted. Scenes can be reshot. Fixing a musical? That is an entirely different ballgame.
West Side Story is essentially Romeo & Juliet with street gangs. If you cannot create magnetism between Tony and Maria, you're done. It will fall flat.
Then there is getting the music & choreography right.
Spielberg apparently has his "Cats". Good for him. He chose this film for entirely political reasons.
Dune is notoriously difficult to bring to screen. But yeah hopefully if they threw in a bunch of special effects and a$$ kicking these marvelized audiences wouldn't notice if it was sh!tty.
ReplyDeleteMy only thought re: West Side Story is that the timing in the blind, at least if I’m interpreting it right, is off. The OG WSS was released almost 60 years ago, lol. That’s a bit more than a few decades?
ReplyDeleteDeath on the Nile.
ReplyDeleteIt should be pointed out that Enty will sometimes change some of the details not to make the blind too obvious.
ReplyDeletespielberg did not start in another job. this really fits with peele's candyman reboot/remake because it's from a few decades ago, is a classic in its genre, peele is also well-regarded in that genre, and he is an A+ list writer/director/producer, who started in a different job (acting).
ReplyDeletemind you, enty also said little women would be a disaster and it has very much not been so who even knows with these blinds
I think MD nailed this one, Peele/candyman.
ReplyDeleteThat threw me off. Is it really considered a “classic”?
DeleteSpiral/saw remake chris rock
ReplyDeleteJ, that was spit-take worthy. I wouldn’t put it past them. Altho another stab at the “little women”, reworked
ReplyDeleteAs “little men” is probably in the works first.
Horror remakes are difficult to pull off. Really if the original was a classic the remake is most likely a cash grab.
ReplyDelete+1 MD
ReplyDeleteWest Side Story is a classic, period, not just "within its genre." (And I'd argue, the 2020 version is not even a "remake" but a new adaptation of the stage play.) Spielberg is not a writer but is directing WSS. Peele is a writer who is producing but not directing the Candyman remake. Peele it is.
Maybe so but West Side Story will bomb. With it following Cats we probably won't get another musical for 25+ years.
DeleteCandyman. It's produced by Jordan Peele & directed by indie filmmaker Nia DaCosta. It's coming out in four months but not one teaser trailer or poster. At this point Universal will probably delay the release from June to September & have Peele handle the reshoots while letting Nia keep the directing credit for good grace & publicity.
ReplyDeleteBill & Ted Face the Music
ReplyDelete@Unknown, Wash your mouth out with soap! Bill & Ted will be awesome. Plus it's a sequel not a remake 😅
ReplyDelete@Chris, Good point, producers are only in charge of finding the money and couching the actresses. It's the director's job to make a good movie but they let some unknown handle it.
ReplyDeleteCandyman is considered a horror classic by fans of the genre.
ReplyDeleteReading the blind with Peele and Candyman in mind makes for a very good fit.
ReplyDeleteTop Gun
ReplyDeleteJordan Peele's comic acting in Key & Peele is genius and Get Out was good but Us was pretty bad. I wanted to love it but I was left so confused and underwhelmed. Tone was completely off and it suffered from major plot holes. Hope he can get it together and sycophants haven't toppled his talent / focus.
ReplyDeleteChris Rock's 'Saw' remake: Spiral?
ReplyDeleteTop Gun. It looks stupid and boring.
ReplyDelete100% this is Peele & Candyman
ReplyDeleteTyler Perry Madea resurrection.. Lol
ReplyDeleteThis has to be The West Side Story Remake.
ReplyDeleteWhich I to this day don't understand why Steven Spielberg thought it would be a great idea to touch This Film.
And I find it really funny that He Shit's on Netflix left and right but will gladly butcher a Film Classic.
Because it's Real Cinema - Even though He's literally ruining The Classic Films Legacy.
I know you all want it to be WWS but Spielberg isn't an actor.
ReplyDeleteNo one will top Virginia Madsen's "Caaaannndy Man".
ReplyDeletesounds like Candyman to me, which makes me sad. I like Peele's work a lot.
ReplyDeleteto add to the comments about musicals, we are getting at least one this year no matter what happens to WSS or anything else. In The Heights, and what I've seen of it so far looks great. (crosses fingers)
