Your Turn

Worst dental visit you ever had?

  1. When one place tried to falsify the bill and I caught them. Keep an eye on your dental bills, dentists pull fraud all the time. Rumor is the reason they have such a high suicide rate is because they get into all kinds of financial scams that eventually backfire.

  2. Dentist danced around me while I was in the chair singing Johnny Angel before obliterating my molar and leaving me with permanent nerve damage in my lower lip. It was supposed to be a simple extraction.

  3. I worked for a leading horse trainer and my dentist wanted some tips on horses . He kept bugging me and then dropped the drill and drilled a hole in my gums. I declined his offer to stitch it up and got out of there fast. By the way,I almost never bet on the horses and didn’t have any tips to give to him.

  4. My entire childhood. My dentist was a sadist (and he was a children’s dentist, plus he had bad breath ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. Literally every time I had an appt., which was always after school, my hands would start sweating at lunchtime. My siblings and I begged my mother to change dentists, but she wouldn’t.

As an adult, when I go to the dentist, they hand me a Valium when I walk in the door.

  5. If you think something isn't right, trust your gut.
I had a dentist drill too deep in my upper teeth. She perforated into my sinus cavity. I only found out because the ENT doctor had an MRI done on my face cause I kept having issues with my sinuses.

  6. I never really had a bad one. I had a wisdom tooth removed a few years ago and it took a while to heal but otherwise I've only ever had two cavities.

  7. When I was in my first tech school in the Air Force. The idiot dentist, a colonel, diagnosed me with 10 cavities when I had never had one in my life. He also said I would have to have my wisdom teeth pulled, even though I'd had them in for 9 years with no problems, because if they somehow became impacted down the road (?!) I would not be considered worldwide qualified. I fought them on the amount of teeth they wanted to drill and luckily got them to limit them to about four. Two cavities were in the wisdom teeth, that got pulled, all four in one session before they sent me walking back to the dorm, in tears, with blood running out of my mouth. Two of the wisdom teeth broke while they were pulling them. I told them repeatedly that one of the "cavities' they were insisting on drilling was a stain I had had on that tooth for years. They drilled it anyway.

When I got to my next base I had the dentist there take new X rays and he said that not only were the previously X rays badly taken, they had misdiagnosed at least 6 cavities in what were healthy teeth. I was beyond pissed off. Thank God I'd been able to convince them to hold off on most of the drilling.

  8. I've learned from experience to never choose a dentist with less than 20 years of experience. Many of the younger ones just see you as a cash register to pay off their student loans and don't have the experience, anyway. One of the dentists I mistakenly chose always had his Porsche or BMW (both with personalized plates) parked in the lot for everyone to see, even though he was barely out of dental school.
I've found that the older, experienced ones do keep up with technology and they are more conservative in the treatment, giving you what's best for your teeth, and not what's best for their wallet.

  9. Had the same dentist for 20 years, never tried to up sell me or talk me into unnecessary treatment. Then he retired and sold his practice and it was endless trying to do everything to make money off me. Checked on my insurance before I got there and was all prepared to get me to do a bunch of crap. I left and went elsewhere. It’s all big biz now.

  10. I bet it sucks being a dentist in Wuhan right now.

  11. When a dental "specialist" arrogantly didn't believe me when I said my tooth wasn't frozen and proceeded to pull it out anyway. I jumped in pain right out of his chair and knocked over his entire tray. He finally said "oh, maybe we should give you some more freezing". I was completely traumatized from this asshole. This same dentist later temporarily lost his license after one of his patients died. He's still in practice as of today.

  12. I put metal braces on my teeth as an adult years ago. It was a painful, traumatic, and EXPENSIVE experience. But now I have teeth that any Hollywood celebrity would mother fuckin die for. My ortho was an Indian guy who looked too pretty to be real. I remember looking at pictures of his wife on the wall in his office and wondering how the hell such ugly women hook up with dudes like him. But I digress. Dude is genius at his craft.

I'm ready for my close-up now, Mr. DeMille.

  14. Honestly, I can't say I've had any truly bad experiences. Our parents did NOT teach us good dental hygiene, and until my dad got a reasonably good job with benefits when I was about 12 I'd never been to a dentist. So I've had a lot of fillings and stuff, but it's all been perfectly fine.

  15. Years ago in LA, the wife & I went to a dentist who said I had a cavity on one of my back teeth.
He wanted to set an appointment to fill it the next week.
That weekend, we ran into the dental hygienist who cleaned our teeth.
She said we needed to cancel the appointment because I didn't have a cavity.
    I was stunned.
She said that she quit that dentist because, "He does that ALL of the time."

  17. The anesthetic wore off as my last wisdom tooth was being removed.

  18. Ugh. Went in to have a root canal redone. The endo pulled out an black, moldy, gross piece of cotton that had been left behind 10 years earlier by my old dentist. Gosh, I wonder why the tooth was so infected.

  19. I had gone to see my dentist of 10 or so years for fillings. He announced to me he was retiring and it was his last week, I believe. He overfroze one side of my gums, and underfroze the other. While he was working on the side that didn't have enough, I jumped and let out an OW. He told me to stop being dramatic and that I wasn't having any pain. Pretty sure I left marks on the chair handles that day. Anyway, when I was done I asked when the freezing would wear off, because the left side of my face was frozen right up to my lower eyelid. He said I should be fine in a couple of hours.

I had taken the day off and went with my plan to go to the mall and get my friend her wedding present. As I walked through the mall, people looked at me in horror and moved away from me. I get to the store I wanted and the saleslady made a HUGE fuss over me. Asked me to sit down and she would bring things to me. I thought, how NICE! Then I turned and saw myself in a mirror.

I looked like I had a stroke. It was even worse when I smiled.

  20. Awful horror stories, sorry for everyone's suffering.

I have seriously never heard dental numbing called freezing before, I had to look it up to make sure there wasn't some crazy new technique. ๐Ÿ˜…

  21. First visit to a new dentist when my family moved. This guy had short broad fingers. I thought my mouth would split at the corners. My parents were friendly with him so I knew Doc B would be my dentist for the next few years until I finished high school. Nice guy but geez wrong profession

  22. The one-eyed surgeon who had no depth perception. Did a root canal. Took forever. And he bitched out his two dental assistants constantly for the two hours I was there.

  23. Was told by my dentist that I needed a tooth extraction. Went to a prominent oral surgeon in Huntington Beach for that very reason. Paid $600 out of pocket, insurance covering the rest. Went back to the dentist afterwards. He was horrified, and told me that in 25 years in this business he had never seen such a shoddy job. He suggested I sue the guy. I was very young and extremely shy. I did go back to confront him. He turned pale, rushed out of the office, and drove in his brand new Mercedes. Needless to say, I had been taken for a ride, and not in the car.

  24. My sister dated a dentist for a while. Turns out he was only hiring hot chicks to work for him if they would have sex with him. And he was supposedly very religious ๐Ÿ˜—

  25. @Blacktooth ๐Ÿคฎ that is beyond nauseating

  26. When they took my six wisdom teeth out. Boy did that suck! Otherwise I usually have a great visit. Never had anything than a few fillings and once, an emergency visit when I cracked a filling. No braces either luckily. They always seemed horrible.

  27. So many, but you asked for the worst.

I chose to have my wisdom teeth removed even though they came in just fine. Spoiler alert - I never got them pulled.

The specialist used septocaine to numb the left side. I am needle phobic. Well, he hit a nerve. I stopped him from numbing the rest of my mouth and pulling my teeth because I felt sick: Nausea, light headed, anxiety, rash, itching. The left side of my face drooped and was that way for weeks.

My regular dentist found out and said that he puts a note in all of his patient files that septocaine is NEVER to be used. He said people often have bad reactions to it. I found out later that not only is this true, most doctors and pharmacists have never heard of septocaine.

I never went back to that dental practice.

  28. I have a dental appointment this week. Thanks to all of my fellow CDAN-ers for sharing your stories!

@Blacktooth: you totally win! (Assuming that anyone can win in the dental world ๐Ÿคช!)

  29. The last one, 10 years ago... where they said I had to pay $1500 up front then submit to my insurance for reimbursement. All the while 3 ten year old Hispanic children with mouths full of free braces translated from their non English speaking moms that they were there to receive their taxpayer funded dental care. I went home. My teeth remain untreated. I'll be going into debt to get dentures soon.

  30. Oh yeah Lisa. My friend needed welfare but could only get WIC, while obvious illegals got the unlimited cards where they’d rack up 5-600 bucks on crap. Or even better, when the cashier told one that they could get three more bananas and then they pulled out a wad of hundreds to pay for their cerveza and cigarettes. I saw a PBS NewsHour special that showed poor Americans in Appalachia, lining up for days to get medical care from foreign doctors that did this for charitable purposes, they were treating them in the county fair grounds animal stalls. Which was ok because they were just white and poor Americans. Of course if any other group had been given medical care in an animal stall, the uproar would be deafening. I guess that’s white privilege for you.
