Should the day after Christmas/Boxing Day be a holiday here in the US?

  4. A 'Christmas Box' in Britain is a name for a Christmas present. Boxing Day was traditionally a day off for servants and the day when they received a 'Christmas Box' from the master. The servants would also go home on Boxing Day to give 'Christmas Boxes' to their families. The name is a reference to charity drives.

Sure why not? We need more holidays in America.

  9. Definitely should be a day off. So many people travel for Christmas that getting home & having to go to work the next day sucks. Many of my family members take the week off between Christmas & New Year’s so that they can spend time with family & friends that they didn’t see on Christmas Day.

  10. No. If we need another holiday make voting day a national holiday instead.

  11. Agree Voting Day needs to be a thing. And you need to present proof of voting to actually get the day off. Otherwise employer can dock your pay for that day.

  12. If voting day was a holiday people would go on vacation and less would actually vote. Why waste your time voting for whatever losers your party picked when you could be hitting the beach or the slopes?😎

  13. I used to work for a company that gave us Election Day off. Every other company I’ve worked for allows you to come in late or leave early (if you need to) in order to vote.

  14. I think it should be a holiday, and the day after the Super Bowl. Or have the damn game on a Saturday so we have a day to recover.

  15. Yes! I had to be at work at 6:00 AM this morning. I'm so tired!

  16. Christmas and Boxing Day are different. So yes, Boxing day should be a holiday since it's the day after Christmas but there's no reason for the day after Boxing Day to be one.

  17. @Sandy.

I was taught at school that Boxing Day was so named because the day after Christmas was the day that churches opened the church charity boxes, that the congregations were meant to have contributed to each Sunday, and distributed the collection to the poor of the parish.

  18. No.

We need a national holiday that calls for people to volunteer to help the less fortunate. Let’s see who participates.

  20. No, because the bloodsucker big box stores, and surviving department stores will have killer sales on the 26th. The advertising will never end.

  24. ONLY if people truly GIVE BACK on that day and those that are typically forced to work on major holidays, get a REAL day of rest!
