It is way easier to launder a whole lot of money through a one off project rather than through a series, so the streaming service canceled a bunch of shows and has now increased the budget of a one off two hour show to almost $100M. A normal budget for this kind of show would be about $2M plus salary.

ReplyDeleteThere is an uproar on Twitter about Netflix canceling a adult cartoon called Tuco and bertie. I've never seen it so I can't say if the rage is justified but if Netflix is going to give Murphy 100M for a two stand-up, he better deliver. Netflix and pissing off so many people, they might lose subscriptions over it.

ReplyDelete@Mooshki -- there was a recent article about how Netflix would rather cancel a top show after two seasons because the show with 2 or more seasons does not attract new subscribers plus they would have to deal with the demands of the cast for increased pay if the show if really successful. Pretty genius if you think about. They would rather mine the industry for new starving talent and keep getting fresh contact than establish their own iconic series.

However, Murphy along with Chapelle, Sandler, Myers etc deserve A list treatment over Amy Schumer who literally ruined the Netflix rating system. I loved watchers' comments and ratings and use to decide on how to watch shows based on it. And, it worked. Oh well. Netflix's loss. Because, now, I downvote most of their recommend for me lists when I use to not.

ReplyDeleteI doubt there is any actual money laundering going on, just really poor management and people paying themselves and others over inflated salaries because of the easy availability of debt, low interest rates and lack of sense and financial restraint . Growing companies tend to borrow and spend a lot to help them grow on the belief that they will be able to pay back that debt once they have captured the market and are profitable. They also frequently end up overpaying for acquisitions and talent as a result. Amazon also went into a spending and borrowing spree prior to becoming the behemoth it is now. Jeff Bezos is however a highly skilled CEO. The people who manage Netflix seem to lack foresight and restraint and their spending seems over the top. I can see Netflix filing for bankruptcy, going belly up or being acquired by a bigger company if they aren't careful especially with Disney about to start its own streaming services and other competitors on the horizon. I also wonder if they are getting any actual feedback on their offerings given how they changed their rating system. Their content sucks and it is becoming overpriced. The management also seems to be an echo chamber.

I think them changing the rating system shows an inability to accept feedback and may contribute to Netflix's downfall. They will just continue to stay in their echo chambers and pay vast sum's of money for talent no one is interested in watching while raising subscription prices. Eventually people will leave because of a lack of interest in the content and the high prices. They are still paying large sums of money to Amy Schumer even though many people didn't like her first special.

Delete@Acad thanks and 100% agreed. There were so many great comments and top responses from shows I had seen before and were spot on. So, I used top comments to decide if I liked a show or not. I hope Netflix dies out too because they deserve it at this point. They are not producing viable shows or movies.

Netflix/ Amazon are mass producing many shows that are mediocre unlike when they first started. The streaming market is increasingly becoming oversaturated. In my opinion, once you cut the cable and go to streaming; You are not going back to cable same as when you stop paying for streaming service. Once all the new 12 streaming services are done, a lot of people are going to very mad when people just saying screw it...it is too expensive to have this many streaming services.
I think Netflix will end up like lime wire, records, VHS, CDs and myspace in the end due to competition and better products.
Hence, the antitrust lawsuit against Google, YouTube, Amazon, Twitter, Facebook by the government. The whole world is dependent (work and schools) on the internet and they are controlling how information is produced and interceded.
Competition will in the end drive Netflix out of the business due to it mediocracy of content vs. when it first started.

ReplyDeleteThe report last week said Eddie was going to get $75 million but didn't list how many specials he was signing up for. Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle got $20 million per special so I could see Eddie pulling in $35 million a piece since it's been over 30 years. Anything more than that for one special would seem extremely fishy.
ReplyDeleteBut wouldn't this strategy be more likely to draw scrutiny from Ernst & Young and the IRS? $100 million meets the threshold for materiality whereas $4 million will not at a company of Netflix's size. If this is true, whoever conceived of this plan, is not that savvy.

They could. Hard to say. They came back from the public uproar over the increased subscription fees.
They do have a lot of new competition. People can watch free movies and TV now without even signing up. There are ads, but so what. With cable you pay the cable company and STILL have ads.
The offerings in those new apps are surprisingly recent and good. The apps can be viewed on a TV set, for those who haven't heard.

Have you watched F is for Family on Netflix?
It's one of the few reasons I'm keeping Netflix. Bill Burr is fantastic as Frank Murphy.
The third season of Stranger Things was horrible. I almost couldn't watch it. I know they are doing a fourth season but they shouldn't bother. They jumped the shark with the Russian uniformsscenes like they wanted to be a bad Indian Jones movie.

ReplyDeleteI'm surprised by all the negativity over Netflix's programming. Sure, a lot of it is crap but I've really enjoyed OITNB, Mindhunter, Stranger Things, When They See Us, Ugly Delicious, Wild Wild Country, Evil Genius, Making a Murderer, Russian Doll (really liked that one). I do think Netflix is pretty shady but I dont get all the hate towards their programming.
