Poor Brit-Brit. If she wasn't truly experiencing a mental health crisis in 2007/08, she DOES appear to be in the thralls of one right now. I was looking at some of the videos she's posted to her Instagram account, and truthfully she seemed "off" in vids from 2016, and they have progressively gotten a bit stranger as time has gone on. The most recent ones are....very upsetting. She seems almost childlike. Very tragic...
As for 2007/07, the jury is still out as to whether Brit's oddball behavior was purely drug-fueled (girl was smoking meth at the time), or a mix of drugs, alcohol and post-partum depression/psychosis. Her team obviously plead some sort of mental illness claim to the courts, since they were granted a conservatorship....but Britney seemed lucid and was back to work within like two months of being 5150'ed....if she was legit descending into madness (a la Amanda Bynes) then there's no way she'd be back to work that soon after TWO SEPARATE 5150 HOLDS within a three week span of time...So who knows.
