Blind Item #1 - Reader Blind
About 15 years ago there was an Indie Pop band who enjoyed moderate, yet somewhat fleeting, success. They are still around, but not quite as big. They were known for their videos, which were pure choreographed fun. The thing is, though, we almost didn't see these videos. One day at the office, the lead singer stopped by me and another assistant and asked us to watch the homemade video. He said the heads of the label insisted they not release it, as then the band would only be known for quirky videos. Here's the thing, if they didn't release that video, they wouldn't be known AT ALL. Just another record on the shelf of a label. The other assistant and I said they absolutely had to release it. Thankfully, they listened to us. Awards appearances, collaborations, and other awesome videos followed. They may not be huge anymore, but if they had listened to the heads of the studio, literally NO ONE would know who they were.
Partied pretty late last night, huh Enty?

ReplyDeleteDef Ok Go and the treadmill video
ReplyDeleteand the label was right, all they are known for is their quirky videos :)
ReplyDeleteTricia clearly has no clue who Modest Mouse is LOL
ReplyDelete@gauloise their music is irritating.
ReplyDeleteIs this the same person who's been targeting Tricia in the comments?
ReplyDeleteWas seeing the treadmills in my head the whole time I read this...OkGo

ReplyDeleteFun blind (and great artistic call) Reader! Thanks for sharing the story!
ty Tricia ty Vita
ReplyDeleteFLOAT ON was our anthem during and after Katrina. I had two teenagers at the time and we played the hell out of MM.. Don't think I ever saw the video. I don't like to watch, as a rule.
ReplyDeleteTalk of Modest Mouse has me really missing GenX made music
ReplyDelete@momo that’s a great anecdote... the video is weird and quirky, isn’t what you’d think when you hear the song and it is indeed an anthem. Soars...:)
ReplyDelete@Avignon Piss off, Derek. And, seriously, get help.
ReplyDeleteSupergrass. Pumping On Your Stereo?
ReplyDeleteOKGO
ReplyDeleteSupergrass broke through about 25 years ago, and their first hit video "alright" wasnt homemade. This deffo sounds like OK Go.
ReplyDeleteWasn't every video "quirky" 15 years ago?
ReplyDeleteThis this absolutely Ok Go and Here It Goes Again
ReplyDeleteI agree with Vita. Definitely OK GO, and absolutely lovely story - thanks for the blind. :)
ReplyDelete(ok, sure, yes, they are mostly known for their quirky videos, but much better than not known at all).
((i only knew them as the pre-show band for They Might Be Giants))
I love Modest Mouse, I think their hits came out before the videos. Float on is a mind boggling video, very sophisticated editing, high production values. It ain't them.
ReplyDeleteMGMT maybe. The ought's had some great music that I enjoy today.
I'm procrastinating, I'm about to head out to a high school reunion. Wish me luck.
The Rube Goldberg video is way more impressive. Unbelievable.

ReplyDeleteI was thinking Aqua, but their day was back in the late 90’s, early 00’s which is unfortunately more than 15 years ago now.
ReplyDeleteThis is OkGo
ReplyDeleteScissor Sisters?
ReplyDeleteDefinitely OK Go
ReplyDeleteThis has to be OK GO. I'm a big fan of both their music and videos.
ReplyDeleteOk GO no doubt. Is it the video "A million ways"? I remember it, catched my eye the second I saw it.
ReplyDeleteGood call to release it.
This is Damien Kulash from OK Go. It's the treadmill video. They still do really cool vids.
