I LOVED Tears For fears live and Bryan Adams live, they were the most unexpectedly best times because they put on phenomenal shows when I didn't expect to have as much fun as I ended up having even though I love their music.
I've seen almost every single act I have ever wanted to see in concert. I will say this, every time I see Peter Gabriel in concert it is a religious experience for me. He is a transcendent and really powerful performer. Billy Joel is probably a runner up because he is still in great voice, has fun with the audience and his songs, and does deep cuts.
has to be october 29th 1975 sacramento memorial auditorium bruce springsteen born to run tour. the place was 80% empty and they rocked every brick in the house for 3 1/2 hours. great show.
AC/DC Ulster Hall Belfast October 1979. First "proper" gig in that it was an internationally known band and not just local bands as big acts hardly ever played Northern Ireland at the time. Honourable exceptions were Motorhead (every winter), Rory Gallagher (practically a local anyway and Blackfoot ( fantastic kick-ass Southern Boogie band). Utterly unbelievable atmosphere and performance.
Close second was Motorhead at Maysfield Leisure Centre Belfast in December 1980. Great, gig, met the band afterwards and a friend of mine later broke Philthy Animal Taylor's (the late drummer) neck I the hotel afterwards. I wasn't there but know the inside story which different slightly from the official one.
Other favourites were Rush at the Hammersmith Odeon in London on their Permanent Waves tour.
And Neil Young on his Trans tour (it didn't mean the same thing back then, he wasn't touring as Nellie) at the NEC in Birmingham. Not so much the gig - first half ho- hum, second fantastic, after he played the excreble trans album and got it out of the way) but for the whole travelling up and back, which I've wrote about here before.
Rock Am Ring in 1987. One night the Eurythmics headlined one night and David Bowie on his Glass Spider Tour the next night. I found this link that lists the entire lineup.
@ Do Tell - glad to see someone else understands what it is like to see Gabriel live. He is, by far, my favorite live performer - the shows are magical.
I've seen him 9 times - and I've been dying for the last 3 years for him to return. The last tour (the co-headlining with Sting - "Rock Paper Scissors") was fantastic, and I'm not even a huge Sting fan.
I think my favorite non-Genesis tour was the show with the New Blood Orchestra.
@Moose, the first time I saw Peter Gabriel was at my first concert, the Conspiracy of Hope Tour at Giants stadium in 1986. My BFF and I got GA tix, got there early, and RAN to the front. At that time, I thought, Peter and Sting should do a tour together someday.
I saw Sting and PG at the Coney Island Amphitheater 3 years ago when they finally made it happen and it was a really fun show, though I was pissed off at the rude folks who kept walking back and forth to the concessions, right in front of the stage, as PG was singing San Jacinto. I was highly offended on his behalf! lol
Is anyone else surprised at the age of those replying? I didn't expect teenagers but I thought there would be a bit more from the nineties onwards. Then again, the question dis specifically say concert not dance and mime show or fuckstick in a baseball hat standing behind a desk shouting 'yo!' and pointing at the ceiling.
There isn't an act previously mentioned that I wouldn't mind seeing....except U2, fuck them.

Saddest show was seeing Britney at the Odyssey arena. Just was so lethargic and sad.

Surprisingly Burton Cummins (lead singer of Guess Who) gave a fabulous solo concert. Very talented man. He's still touring this year so if you get a chance go see him.
My daughter went to the Snow Patrol thing the weekend before last. It was only ten minutes away. And many years ago I was buckin Gary Lightbody's auntie (or cousin, onne of the two, I forget now). She was fantastic!

Rammstein as a wee eighteen year old, Guns n Roses as a olde twenty eight year old. Granted, GnR was the reunion tour so it wasn't the full experience but I wasn't born/was a baby when they still had the original line-up so seeing the OGs wasn't exactly an option...
String Cheese Incident at Rothbury Music Festival 2009 Was amazing. So many things going on, on stage and in the crowd. Youtube videos captured everything.
Not favorite but memorable. Robert Palmer, amphitheatre in Northern California, very hot evening - said he really preferred bossa nova and sang that all night.
In no particular order, many seen multiple times. Major concert attendee/many other concerts not listed here that were just okay/blah/disappointing. I also worked as a DJ in a nightclub who had many of these concerts (connections), Ticketmaster (able to get the best tickets), and interned at A&M (free tix/connections). I've been very lucky and appreciate all amazing experiences I've had.

Sept 5, 1993 ..... The Gorge Amphitheater @ George, Washington ... Neil Young with Booker T & the MG’s, Pearl Jam and Blind Melon. It was a grunge dream come true! Neil did a small acoustic set in the middle of his show, while the moon rose over the Columbia River. Early 20s me cried because it was so beautiful.
Rolling Stones 1981 Tattoo You tour. Some dick head guy promised my roomies and I free tickets at will call. Drove from Peoria IL through a blizzard to Downers Grove area and no tickets. Finally at a very side door at the venue was a beautiful woman of color with magnificent beaded braids and when I asked for tickets in our name she said nah. I about cried and she said how many are with you. There were three of us. She gave me three tickets and they were row three. We had better seats than the Playboy Bunnies who where there in costume. Mick didn't disappoint.
Elton John, Portland Me, 2004 Magnificent show. Saw in in the early aughts in Phoenix and he was drug addled and the show sucked. It was in a theater in the round venue too. So disappointing but the show in Maine was tremendous.
Most recent was Brian Wilson in 2015. His band was absolutely phenomenal. In days gone by, Allman Brothers, The Who, Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart and Santana stand out (mid-70-80's).
Hard to say. I love pretty much every concert I've ever been to, just because I love music. Took my daughter to see Billie Eilish in Vancouver this past weekend. Even that wasn't completely terrible...L
Most memorable - Guns & Roses at Riverport Amphitheater in St. Louis 1991... yep, 'The Riot' Best concert - toss up between Tool in a small theater in the mid 90s - Ænima Tour... Pearl Jam in a small theater (The Fox / St. Louis)- complete with Eddie Vedder climbing up to the balcony and crowd surfing Vs Tour - 1994, Candlebox at the Pageant (small venue) just this past January and I'm almost embarrassed to say this but I still do not understand the hate - Nickelback Dark Horses tour with Hinder, Papa Roach, and Saving Abel 2007. I've seen them all - stones, who, pink floyd, STP, motley crue, Page & Plant, Aerosmith, etc., and those were the 4 best! My biggest regret and I am forever saddened that I will never get to see Linkin Park (I LOVE Chester - still!) PS: Puddle of Mudd was pretty damn good too - pre-Wes Scantlin meltdown.
-Prince (in the Artist Formerly Known As days) at the Chicago Theatre was mindblowing. Staggering talent in perfect form. That one still gets me.
-Biggest name in small venue would be Veruca Salt/Hole (Live Through This was out) at a bar in Indy. Both bands sounded great. Courtney returned from a stage dive accusing someone of groping her. She had security pull the guy on stage while she howled names and accusations, grabbed his arm, sniffed his fingers, then yelled into the microphone, "Yep! Smells like me!"�� Then she proceeded to let him slink back into the crowd and the band finished the set. -Longest distance traveled specifically for a show-- 9 ish hours to Toronto for some radiofest...Blues Traveler, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Neil Young. We were on the opposite end of the stadium, but it was the only time I've seen Pearl Jam and it was a fun roadtrip adventure. -Mosh pit adjacent-- Eleven/Tad/Soundgarden-- we had seen Soundgarden a few times over the summer opening for Neil Young, and decided to go for it and get close to the stage for this smaller show.i was smashed up vs the security barrier drenched in my and moshers' sweat, but only about three people back from the stage. Security even came along pouring water in our mouths like baby birds bc it was so hot. They sounded amazing, but it was so loud that we felt drunk for hours afterward. We went back the next night, but sat in the balcony. Happy I braved it once though! -Most recent show-- Elvis Costello at the Vic in November. Smallest venue Ive seen him in. He was in a chatty, rather playful mood, and he and the band always sound terrific.
So many other special shows-- Paul McCartney, Tom Petty, Rolling Stones w/Lenny Kravitz opening, Smithereens, Squeeze, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, ZzTop, REM,John Cougar Mellencamp/Willie Nelson/Neil Young (Farm Aid/Flood Relief event)
Luckily, I’ve had the joy of attending many wonderful concerts. Despite loving to see The Stones, Bruce, U2, etc., I especially love after-parties and small venues.
My MOST favorite concert was Chrissie Hynde. It was in my home town, in an old movie theater that was converted, and now has concerts, plays, balllet, etc. Everyone else except my BF and I were just sitting there, as if they were at an opera. I was dancing in the aisle, and security threatened to throw me out because I was ‘a fire hazard’. BEST COMPLIMENT I could ever receive! We just moved from our good seats to the last row which was empty and kept dancing!
In radiology class, I learned that dogs cannot be x-rayed.

Neil did a small acoustic set in the middle of his show, while the moon rose over the Columbia River. Early 20s me cried because it was so beautiful.

The Rolling Stones years ago when they were in their prime. ZZ Top opened for them and they were very good, too.

ReplyDeleteRolling Stones 1981 Tattoo You tour. Some dick head guy promised my roomies and I free tickets at will call. Drove from Peoria IL through a blizzard to Downers Grove area and no tickets. Finally at a very side door at the venue was a beautiful woman of color with magnificent beaded braids and when I asked for tickets in our name she said nah. I about cried and she said how many are with you. There were three of us. She gave me three tickets and they were row three. We had better seats than the Playboy Bunnies who where there in costume. Mick didn't disappoint.
ReplyDeleteElton John, Portland Me, 2004 Magnificent show. Saw in in the early aughts in Phoenix and he was drug addled and the show sucked. It was in a theater in the round venue too. So disappointing but the show in Maine was tremendous.

ReplyDeleteMost recent was Brian Wilson in 2015. His band was absolutely phenomenal. In days gone by, Allman Brothers, The Who, Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart and Santana stand out (mid-70-80's).

ReplyDeleteMost memorable - Guns & Roses at Riverport Amphitheater in St. Louis 1991... yep, 'The Riot' Best concert - toss up between Tool in a small theater in the mid 90s - Ænima Tour... Pearl Jam in a small theater (The Fox / St. Louis)- complete with Eddie Vedder climbing up to the balcony and crowd surfing Vs Tour - 1994, Candlebox at the Pageant (small venue) just this past January and I'm almost embarrassed to say this but I still do not understand the hate - Nickelback Dark Horses tour with Hinder, Papa Roach, and Saving Abel 2007. I've seen them all - stones, who, pink floyd, STP, motley crue, Page & Plant, Aerosmith, etc., and those were the 4 best! My biggest regret and I am forever saddened that I will never get to see Linkin Park (I LOVE Chester - still!) PS: Puddle of Mudd was pretty damn good too - pre-Wes Scantlin meltdown.

ReplyDelete-Prince (in the Artist Formerly Known As days) at the Chicago Theatre was mindblowing. Staggering talent in perfect form. That one still gets me.
-Biggest name in small venue would be Veruca Salt/Hole (Live Through This was out) at a bar in Indy. Both bands sounded great. Courtney returned from a stage dive accusing someone of groping her. She had security pull the guy on stage while she howled names and accusations, grabbed his arm, sniffed his fingers, then yelled into the microphone, "Yep! Smells like me!"�� Then she proceeded to let him slink back into the crowd and the band finished the set.
-Longest distance traveled specifically for a show-- 9 ish hours to Toronto for some radiofest...Blues Traveler, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Neil Young. We were on the opposite end of the stadium, but it was the only time I've seen Pearl Jam and it was a fun roadtrip adventure.
-Mosh pit adjacent-- Eleven/Tad/Soundgarden-- we had seen Soundgarden a few times over the summer opening for Neil Young, and decided to go for it and get close to the stage for this smaller show.i was smashed up vs the security barrier drenched in my and moshers' sweat, but only about three people back from the stage. Security even came along pouring water in our mouths like baby birds bc it was so hot. They sounded amazing, but it was so loud that we felt drunk for hours afterward. We went back the next night, but sat in the balcony. Happy I braved it once though!
-Most recent show-- Elvis Costello at the Vic in November. Smallest venue Ive seen him in. He was in a chatty, rather playful mood, and he and the band always sound terrific.
So many other special shows-- Paul McCartney, Tom Petty, Rolling Stones w/Lenny Kravitz opening, Smithereens, Squeeze, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, ZzTop, REM,John Cougar Mellencamp/Willie Nelson/Neil Young (Farm Aid/Flood Relief event)

ReplyDeleteLuckily, I’ve had the joy of attending many wonderful concerts. Despite loving to see The Stones, Bruce, U2, etc., I especially love after-parties and small venues.
ReplyDeleteMy MOST favorite concert was Chrissie Hynde. It was in my home town, in an old movie theater that was converted, and now has concerts, plays, balllet, etc. Everyone else except my BF and I were just sitting there, as if they were at an opera. I was dancing in the aisle, and security threatened to throw me out because I was ‘a fire hazard’. BEST COMPLIMENT I could ever receive! We just moved from our good seats to the last row which was empty and kept dancing!
@Vita: I wish I had the opportunity see Prince. I can only imagine the greatness.
