Crockpot because my cupboards are filled and I have no place for an Instapot. I'd like someone to cook me something in one though to see if it's any good.
Aren't most instant pots also slow cookers? Mine is. Between Ol' Insty and my air fryer I rarely use my stove and oven anymore (which I love because that bastard is the biggest pain to clean...)
Instapot if those are the only choices. All save the smallest crock pots are too heavy for my hands during a flare up these days. But that’s why I keep a Dutch oven and a selection of cast iron cookware in the cupboard for good cooking days.
Who else here is living by the grill lately? (Last night: grilled Yukon gold potatoes and dry marinated aged NY Strip for the wife and I and grilled garlic hoisin pork belly for my noodle/rice bowl-mad dad. Up tonight: grilled green beans and crack corn with peppercorn tenderloin)
It cooks the best and easiest pasta I have ever made. Pasta, water and cook on high half the time listed on the box. You can add pasta sauce instead of part of the water and make it even easier.
Crockpot within limits. Nothing is more than vegetables overcooked in a crockpot. Some things like Italian beef and pulled pork are great cooked in a crockpot but I'm passing on anything with vegetables.
I have both and rarely use either. In fact I only used the instapot once. My daughter uses the crap out of hers. I will use the crockpot outside on the deck when this area becomes a stew of high heat and higher humidity. I won’t use the grill either. It’s too effing hot in summer. It is used when fall camping or during power outages due to hurricanes or TS.
Both. The Insta Pot is good, but has a poor crock pot feature because the heat is only generated from the bottom of the Insta Pot and the heat is generated from the bottom AND sides on a crock pot.
I don't really like meat prepared in the Instapot, but it's great for veggies like potatoes and corn on the cob that usually take a lot longer...so both for me as well.
Not a single person I know who bought an Instapot has used it to actually make anything with it that you can't make in a Crockpot. "You HAVE to get an Instapot! You can make your own yogurt!" Are you really going to take the time when artisan, grass-fed, humanely-raised greek-style stuff is $6 a tub at your local market? (And btw, you can make yogurt with a crockpot, too.)
@Bec: Many of my family members have Instapots & some of them even took a class. They keep telling me how much time they’re saving. Someone told me I could cook brown rice in 45 minutes, but I already cook it in 20. I’ve been seeing lots of ‘almost new’ Instapots for sale on line.
Crockpot because Instapot requires learning new tricks. But if I didn't have a crockpot already, I might buy an Instapot bc it can also be a crockpot and multitaskers > unitaskers.
Nothing beats my Le Creusette though. Accept no lesser brand of dutch oven, they're all shit compared to the real thing.
Instapot. Just got mine a couple months ago and I've used it so much more than I ever did my crockpot. Make kickass Italian Wedding Soup in about an hour that tastes like it simmered all day.
We use the crockpot on holidays for pulled pork bbq, corned beef sandwiches, or meatballs. Otherwise, it’s the trusty soup pot on the stove with a nice sear and slow simmer.
Crockpot for making oatmeal with apples, cinnamon, sugar, raisins, a little milk. Out of this world. Also, cooking ribs, then finishing in the oven with Ray's Barbeque Sauce. Once time made carmelized organic onions. Just once. The odor was memorable in not a good way.
@ Substance D - Been using my neti pot a few times a week since the superbloom. It’s a life saver but funnily enough I’ve talked to a few people who refuse to use one because they are afraid they will drown. π
@ Hanniam - it was so unseasonably hot last night that we dusted off the George Foreman and made bacon cheese burgers. I added avocado on mine, wrapped it in romaine leaves and I always put mayo on my burgers (hate ketchup). Soooo good...
@Mango: I used to hate Neti pots. Always felt like I was going to choke somehow. I now use Neil-Med. It’s a pressurized bottle so you don’t have to put your head in that weird position. They sell saline packets & you mix with distilled water. Works great!
@ Aquagirl - I use the Neil-Med packets with my Neti - agree that it’s good stuff! I warm a cup of distilled water for 45 seconds in a clean Pyrex measuring cup in the micro and then pour it in the Neti with a packet of Neil-Med, jump in a steamy shower and when I’m done showering grab the Neti and then lean over from the waist (easy there Count!) and do the whole process while in the shower so all the stuff goes down the drain. Game changer for me!
I prefer the pressure cooker, and the Crockpot. I've used an Instapot after someone dragged it home, but I wasn't impressed. Fresh green beans in the pressure cooker with a hunk of salt pork and enough water to cover - put it on the burner and set the little spinning ffft-ffft-ffft bleeder on top, and in 35 minutes voila! The best danged green beans you've ever eaten.
i dont really get why people use them, it is pretty easy to cook on the stove and in the oven and you can regulate the ingredients and consistency better.

ReplyDeleteNeti pot. Allergies and such.
ReplyDelete+1: @SubstanceD
ReplyDeleteBoth. The Instapot is more versatile. There is nothing like cooked all day beef stew in a stoneware crockpot.
ReplyDeleteDutch oven.

ReplyDeleteCrockpot Express. Interchangeable with Insta Pot.

ReplyDelete@roque, Consensus seems to be that they're not as good at slow cooking as a dedicated crockpot.

Potjie over an open fire all day long...mmmmmm oxtail and butterbeans.
ReplyDeleteInstapot - cooks a turkey breast so it stays most & doesn't dry out.

ReplyDeleteCrock pot. Ninja has an awesome one that allows you to use either stovetop or slow cooker settings.

ReplyDeleteI use the crockpot for the classic stuff, dont know enough about Instapot yet-- what is its distinguishing feature?
ReplyDeleteHanniam-- what time is dinner served in the cul-de-sac? π I might just pay you for Carry Out service and hang up my apron!
@Vita: LOL, once you smell it, DINNER’S ON!!
DeleteInstaPot is a very good pressure cooker. I used it for hydrating dried mushrooms (they come out tender), cooking frozen foods (chicken), cooking beans. It's also good at sautΓ©ing thawed food. My model has a feature that's similar to sous-vide. I use the sous-vide like feature to make canna-butter. I like my Instant for some things.

ReplyDeleteOk, anyone else have to suppress his/her inner Beavis to keep from giggling every time they read Dutch Oven? π
My Crockpot is the love of my life. I don't have an Insta Pot, but I've not heard great things about them.

ReplyDeleteInstapot hands down! It's a crockpot and pressure cooker sauteer, rice cooker...
