I worked in a middle school a few years back and the eighth and ninth graders didn't remember 9/11 at all, it was before their time. So something that everyone alive would remember would have to be something personal, I'd think.
The only other thing that is universally remembered is scent. The sense of smell is the most powerful of the senses, and can immediately bring you back to a place and time.
