Today's Blind Items - Here Comes Santa - Kindness

Even though it is Christmas Eve, I really hadn't planned on putting a Kindness item here. Then, when recording a podcast episode with Tricia13 this morning, we started talking about music and groups and it made me think of someone that I haven't thought about in a long time. Back in the day he was A+ list. A singer. He came out of the gate so fast and was everywhere. For several years it felt like every song he sang went to the top of the charts. I'm still surprised he has never won a Grammy. He has won a lot of other awards. He kind of screwed himself over because of the way he fought the music industry. He crashed and burned when he said the things he did and even though he did and can still put out music, every radio station is scared to play him because the record companies don't want him played. If a station does play him, they risk losing out on access to singers on those labels.

After the labels basically blacklisted the guy, you would think he would be bitter. I never got that from him at all. A few years ago I was out his way in the late spring. We were going to meet for lunch and he told me to meet him and we could go on his rounds together. I had no idea what he meant, but was game for anything. It turns out that once a month from January to October he spends a week of his time going from shelter to shelter to children's hospitals to Boys & Girls clubs and dropping off all kinds of needed materials that he has either bought or arranged to have donated. He literally spends 60-70 hours during that week driving from place to place bringing them much needed items. He spends the other three weeks a month making calls and getting the stuff donated and going out and buying things himself. I asked him why he skipped it in November and December and he said that is when the rest of the population of the city took over. He said he was needed the rest of the year when people would suddenly forget these services and organizations existed. They don't just need your help in the holidays. He said that he is so grateful to have made as much money as he had so he could do this for everyone in the city he loves. The people I saw that day love him right back.

  1. Since tricia is a huge fan of old new wave and synth music even though I dont think this guy is blackballed Im going to say Joe Jackson.

  6. Kid Rock? He had controversy over stuff he said about the confederate flag and refused to walk back.

    or

Bryan McKnight, he put up an X-rated video on youtube and lost a lot of fans

    neither have grammys

  7. Neil won Best Rock song in 2010.

  8. How can this be Neil Young? He started off in a group, Crosby Stills, Nash and Young.

  9. @DoTell,he started off in Buffalo Springfield.

  10. I thought of Tevin Campbell but he is a mess and that’s why he isn’t played.

  11. Ok, I stand corrected. The point is the same, he didn't come out of the gate on his own.

    B Foster, good guess.

  13. Jackson Browne, he took on the music industry suing for royalties. never won a grammy, known for his charity and activism

  14. Also known for beating the shit out of Daryl Hannah which is what caused his persona non grata status.

  15. the subject of the blind is a singer--not singer-songwriter, likely R&B...

  16. Ruh roh Tricia. Derek and The Alts is going to lose whatever grey matter he has left now that Enty, has featured you on a podcast. Sandy will go all Brooklyn on him. This is going to be epic.

  18. Browne and the Santa Monica PD have denied that anything happened to Hannah. Even JFK Jr. stated that she was prone to exaggeration due to her Asperger’s. This alleged assault was investigated, Hannah has never filed charges and has subsequently denied it. I, too, think it is Jackson Browne. He is an extremely generous philanthropist with his time and money.

  19. Reading his wiki, I think its Terrence Trent D'Arby so +1 there.

    ReplyDelete
  20. My first thought was Terrence Trent D'Arby too, but doesn't he live in Europe now?

    ReplyDelete
  21. " For several years it felt like every song he sang went to the top of the charts."

D'arby had 2 or 3 singles off one album and that's all. He was good looking, and given some good tunes, but he wasnt the greatest talent and had a huge ego, so its not surprising he career didnt last.

  22. @snaremymind, he lives in Germany

  23. Terence has a Grammy.

  24. Sammy Hagar or Ted Nugent

  25. Damn he fit pretty good though and now he's recording under a different name.

  26. Alice Cooper also is a very nice guy.
    Quite opposite his stage persona.

  27. Bryan Adams? He’s fighting for copyright laws? And Tricia- congrats on the podcast! Can’t wait for the head explosions- got my popcorn ready! Also, as a side note, I looked at some of the questions on twitter. A lot of people wonder if you are Enty or Enty’s wife, someone wondered if your spellcheck is broken ๐Ÿ˜‚, and somebody queried- Triscuits or Wheat Thins? ๐Ÿ˜Š

  28. Heather, yes I think you are correct. He was everywhere in the 80's and has a great voice. Sexy too! I hope it is him...always liked the guy.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I doubt Bryan Adams, he owns a recording studio in Vancouver that even AC/DC used this fall. And he's foreign born. Always on Canadian radio. I would imagine he's pretty dialled in. And I think he lives mostly in London now.

  30. Just some trivia about Terrence Trent Darby and Bryan Adams:
Terrence was good looking and was arrogant, so I agree with @gauloise with that. Also at that time I remember he mentioned in an interview Whitney Houston, saying that he could never have her as his girlfriend as she/her beauty was 'too perfect.' This was just before she got together publicly with Bobby Brown.

Bryan Adams had an affair with Princess Diana. (That might be a Blind Revealed here.)

  31. D'Arby is a massive talent unfortunately unwilling to be corralled a bit. He is married and living in Italy.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Sammy Hagar started out with Montrose and would never let an opportunity to be featured favorably in the media pass. He'd totally make sure everyone knew about his largesse

    ReplyDelete
  33. Whoever this artist is, they're a saint. I'd love to hear the reveal on this guy.

  34. Hey, if I was accused of assault I would deny it just like Jackson Browne. Joni Mitchell believed Daryl and wrote a song about it. In talking about the song, Jackson Browne came across as an arrogant, condescending asshole. I can totally believe he is one of those Jekyll and Hydes, just like his Eagle friend Don, about whom many prostitutes have negative stories, even if the CDAN story isn't for real. Hannah not filing charges means nothing. .

  35. I just looked up PAUL YOUNG. He's never won a Grammy and he was huge. His Wiki doesn't have any type of scandal on it, so probably not him.

Bryan Adams is still A list. I saw him in concert last year (Concord Pavilion in California), he was fantastic. Sounds the same. He also released a new album.

  36. Sure glad I told Tricia about the podcast request! And Derek isn't here since I mentioned it...yeah I know that mean nothing. : )

  37. I was wondering if it was someone like Alice Cooper or James Blunt (even though Alice hosts his own radio show, but I've out of the US for a while now so I don't know who is still not played on the radio there), but I think I'm going with Randy "I Love LA" Newman, while he is most popular for soundtracks, his solo music isn't really heard these days even though he's putting out music, and he's with Nonesuch Records, owned by WMG/Warner Bros Records.

I doubt it only because Randy is still making money, dismissing the past tense used, but still this a great story. Can't wait to hear Trisha's voice!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Nevermind, I'm a dumbass, of course Randy has won Grammys.

    Michael Bolton.

Sony paid out 4 million, after a seven year court case. The Isley Brothers sued for plagiarism in Bolton's song, "Love is a Wonderful Thing".

Bolton is very active in children's charities. In 1993, Bolton established "The Michael Bolton Foundation, later renamed The Michael Bolton Charities, to assist women and children at risk from the effects of poverty as well as emotional, physical, and sexual abuse.

Bolton also serves as the honorary chairman of Prevent Child Abuse America, the national chairman for This Close for Cancer Research, and a board member for the National Mentoring Partnership and the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital.

Bolton has received the Lewis Hine Award from the National Child Labor Committee, the Martin Luther King Award from the Congress of Racial Equality, and the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. (source:Wikipedia)

Never mind. Bolton has two Grammys.

  41. Richard Marx is the first person that came to mind. His first 7 singles were Top 5. He has a Grammy but it's for writing a song not performing it so it could be a technicality.

"In an interview published in Rolling Stone Magazine on June 26, 2009, Marx said he was "ashamed" of having been linked to a $1.92 million fine against single mother Jammie Thomas-Rasset by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Rasset had shared 24 songs on the file-sharing website Kazaa in 2005, and Marx's "Now and Forever" was one of them."

  42. I’m going with Cat Stevens. He was dissed because of his religion and I don’t think he’s released anything recently. If anyone hasn’t seen the clips, check on YouTube for his tour a few years ago. Specifically his duets with Chris Cornell & Eddie Vedder. Beautiful.

  43. Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam not only supported the fatwa against Salman Rushdie, he was barred from entering israel bc he allegedly gave financial support to terrorist groups, which is what also put him on the no-fly list. Not because of his religion, because of his suspected actions. He also had or has ties to Hamza Yusuf, who promotes jihad. He was not victimized because of who he worships.

  44. The ever annoying, yet always entertaining David Lee Roth. Can’t buy a hit in the past 25 years....

  45. Yeah Trixie, David Lee Roth. Better fit than Sammy Hagar.

  46. What awards has David Lee Roth won? Or are we just throwing out random names now?

  54. For several years, every song went to the top of the charts. No way could it be Terence Trent Darby lol. Cee Lo Green? Wtf? Marx or Roth could be answers but I would think if it was Roth, the band would have been mentioned. Marx was big for a few years but I doubt he has the kind of clout to be blacklisted.

  55. Plus, what kid at the Boys and Girls club would be excited by Richard Marx. Nothing against him but I doubt stations are scared to play him and children are excited to see him. That makes no sense. It don’t mean nothing.

  56. One name I’ll throw out there who could possibly meet all the criteria: Billy Idol. I don’t know any record company beefs but he had tons of hits and his music still holds up but you never hear it. No Grammies either.
