I LOVE it. I cannot say it is my favorite, but it is in the top 3. I think I like Pecan best. Glad we had a "Your Turn" today - I didn't see one yesterday. It's how I get to know you peeps!
Fun fact: I had never seen an actual pumpkin in real lufe until about seven or eight years ago. I still have never tasted one and have no intention of starting now either. They look repellent.
Rite of Passage in many families. Spouse's grandmother made a squash pie that was way better than pumpkin. Heirloom squash plants - very hard to replicate these days (we have tried).
Not my fave. My gay uncles always bring pies from a shwanky bakery and pecan is always the biggest hit, followed kind of surprisingly by coconut cream.
A special Happy Thanksgiving to our girl, Candy Crowley...eat, drink, and cranberry!
Perhaps if I sprayed an entire can of whipped cream on it I might. My son though LOVES it. I always buy one for the holidays and he pretty much eats the entire thing. (He's 18, 6 ft 1, weighs 145 and I hate him. lol...just kidding...love him but I always tell him it will catch up to him!)
Happy Thanksgiving CDANer’s! In our family, most like a “sliver” of each. Pumpkin custard style pie, and apple pie served with a slice of sharp cheddar. I think it’s the New England side that does the cheese and apple pie.
LOVE Pumpkin pie! Made several already this year, one with Rum Chata (just 1/2 cup - but made it interestingly good!) Second fav: Bourbon Pecan pie. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
I like pumpkin pie. It's what I eat for breakfast every Thanksgiving morning. The holiday breakfast of champions. After the big meal it's always pecan pie for dessert!
From-scratch pumpkin pie is divine. Protip: you can't make it from jack-o-lanterns, it must be made with crook-neck pumpkins that aren't hollow inside, and the cooked pumpkin must be strained through a cheesecloth to remove any stringy or undercooked parts. Then, prepared custard-style with a generous amount of spice, it's amazingly delicious.
I would also pass on a grocery-store canned pumpkin pie with soggy undercooked crust. The standard cheap pumpkin pie is revolting, pumpkin pies must be made with love and care.
I love it. I make it custard style on top of a cheesecake layer in a gingersnap crust with whipped cream and peanut brittle to garnish. I grow a fuckton of pumpkins every year so I bake a bunch at once and freeze them. I get asked for the recipe but won't share my secrets.
Hellz yes to pumpkin pie! Don't even need to dress it up if you do it right. Stop ragging on Thanksgiving food. Every year "Wah wah, turkey is bland" "Wah wah stuffing is bad for you." Leave Thanksgiving alooooone!
I bake pumpkin, pecan, mince and apple pear for the holidays. We buy the little sugar pumpkins and bake them, then freeze. Bake that pie crust for about ten minutes before filling. Just make sure to cover the top of the pan with foil. It will not be soggy. Pecan is nothing but a big slice of candy. I make Bird’s custard for the mince and whipped cream for the rest. Wicked Bee yours sounds amazing. IIRC you’re a farmer. Also, nothing tastes better than a wild turkey. The flavor is so different than farmed. We’re lucky if one of the hunters gets one the weekend before. No luck this year.
I like it, but it's not in my top three, and the rest of the family don't care for it. This year we are having apple, French Coconut, and raspberry instead.
I’ve never been a big dessert eater (but give me a cheese plate and I’m in heaven.) I also feel that on Thanksgiving, people are often too full to enjoy it. So last year, when I was asked to bring a dessert, I asked the host if it needed to be Thanksgiving related. He told me to bring whatever I wanted. So I brought vanilla gelato, berry-flavored sorbets, and a bowl of mixed berries with a bit of honey. Huge hit and all those poor pies that people brought are probably still sitting there :)
Enty, I think next years question should be ‘what was your worst Thanksgiving experience ever’?
Butternut squash pie. It's infinitely better, both in taste and consistency. You need to lightly boil the squash, rice it, add eggs and spices the same as you would with pumpkin pie. I dare you to try it. You won't be disappointed. Homemade whipped cream is essential.
I don't like pie; and I don't celebrate a "holiday" where Americans' goal is to stuff themselves. There are just too many millions of hungry people on the planet. Also elderly, lonely, incarcerated, terminal, hospitalized, orphaned and suffering people in neighboring countries and the US. When there is a holiday that they can also enjoy, then it will truly mean something.
@mercyprosperity, but you have the ability to show how holier than thou you are when millions do not have internet access for real needs. People like you are why there is suffering in the world, otherwise you would not be able to tell everyone about it. Do you happen to be an atheist vegetarian too?
Getting the long end of the wishbone is a snap!
ReplyDeleteYou’re a great audience. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.
It is actually my favorite kind of pie, not a sloppy mess like other pies.
ReplyDeleteI kinda like it its almost like a custard pie. I used to love me some coconut custard pie when I was a kid.
ReplyDeleteIt is my favorite as well,Enty, never had mine apparently.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE it. I cannot say it is my favorite, but it is in the top 3. I think I like Pecan best. Glad we had a "Your Turn" today - I didn't see one yesterday. It's how I get to know you peeps!
ReplyDeleteI don't like crust but I dig out the filling. I do like it.
ReplyDeleteLOVE pumpkin. Not sure what Enty’s top pick would be.
ReplyDeleteI bet hes an apple pie type of guy.
ReplyDeleteI like a little bit of pumpkin pie with my whipped cream.
ReplyDeleteI hate pumpkin pie along with apple and pecan.
ReplyDeleteI prefer Pumpkin Pie Cake.
ReplyDeleteI don't like pie EXCEPT for pumpkin and I've started loving pecan now too. but my absolute fave is pumpkin
ReplyDeleteI dont like pie at all.
ReplyDeleteFun fact: I had never seen an actual pumpkin in real lufe until about seven or eight years ago. I still have never tasted one and have no intention of starting now either. They look repellent.
ReplyDeleteKey Lime for second place,or summer. But I'm the person who buys all the 50%off cans of pumpkin at the end of the season,I make it all year. .
ReplyDeleteI FLOVE pumpkin pie.
ReplyDeleteRite of Passage in many families. Spouse's grandmother made a squash pie that was way better than pumpkin. Heirloom squash plants - very hard to replicate these days (we have tried).
ReplyDeleteOh yes. I like it enough to go back for seconds, and if there's enough left I'll have leftover pumpkin pie later.
ReplyDeletePumpkin pie from Urth Caffe!
ReplyDeleteLOVE pumpkin pie. First choice always, though, is strawberry-rhubarb.
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving all!
@ Lonely the pumpkin you use for cooking is different than the type that is carved on Halloween
ReplyDeleteIt has to be made by someone who knows how to do it. I hated it forever until I had "real" pumpkin pie.
ReplyDeleteFirst choice for me but no whipped cream. I like it year round.
ReplyDeleteRiding the pecan pie train
ReplyDeleteI make sweet potato pies. They look like pumpkin pies, but taste so much better.
ReplyDeleteThis!!!
DeleteOooo pumpkin spice Krispy Kreme! They only had them at Halloween though.
ReplyDeleteNo, it's boring. It's better as a cheesecake.
ReplyDeleteI do love pumpkin pie. Does that make me weird? OH NO!
ReplyDeleteWith whipped cream!! Yumm
ReplyDeleteI would rather have pumpkin cheesecake. And I will after I make it tonight.
ReplyDeletedont like, and wont eat
ReplyDeleteHate pumpkin pie, but love sweet potato pie made with cream cheese.
ReplyDeleteNope, Cherry is my go-to holiday pie. I don't usually eat pie during the rest of the year.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely in my top 5, depending on who makes it. The canned filling is meh, but a fresh pumpkin pie, made by a good baker, is fantastic.
ReplyDeleteNot my fave. My gay uncles always bring pies from a shwanky bakery and pecan is always the biggest hit, followed kind of surprisingly by coconut cream.
ReplyDeleteA special Happy Thanksgiving to our girl, Candy Crowley...eat, drink, and cranberry!
I prefer Apple Pie!
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving to all!
=)
Pumpkin pie is usually not spciy enough. Make it with kabocha for a fuller flavor.
ReplyDeletePerhaps if I sprayed an entire can of whipped cream on it I might. My son though LOVES it. I always buy one for the holidays and he pretty much eats the entire thing. (He's 18, 6 ft 1, weighs 145 and I hate him. lol...just kidding...love him but I always tell him it will catch up to him!)
ReplyDeleteLove it.
ReplyDeleteWon’t touch pumpkin, but pile on the blueberry pie! YUM!!
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving CDANer’s! In our family, most like a “sliver” of each. Pumpkin custard style pie, and apple pie served with a slice of sharp cheddar. I think it’s the New England side that does the cheese and apple pie.
ReplyDeleteAlso, oyster dressing...

ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving everyone!
I like pumpkin pie. It's what I eat for breakfast every Thanksgiving morning. The holiday breakfast of champions. After the big meal it's always pecan pie for dessert!
ReplyDeleteWow! There are a lot of people copping to liking pumpkin pie. I would not have expected that.

Pumpkin is definitely my favorite kind of pie. I'd happily eat it year-round.

Okay, WickedBee's sounds positively divine.
ReplyDeleteWickedBee is my Queen 👑
ReplyDeleteCostco in Hawaii sells Pumpkin Pie year-round. I have had it, and it’s dreck. Go fig?

ReplyDeleteI am a farmer and we love wild turkey too!
DeleteHubs got one so that's what we had for our Thanksgiving (Canadian Thanksgiving was October).
Happy Thanksgiving to all you beautiful, hilarious People! Love you all.
I like pecan pie
ReplyDeleteIt's my fave. pie and actually the only kind I like. I LOVE it!!
ReplyDeleteI like it, but it's not in my top three, and the rest of the family don't care for it. This year we are having apple, French Coconut, and raspberry instead.
ReplyDeleteBitchysoisse: Love your name, and baking tips!
ReplyDeleteLove pumpkin pie!
ReplyDeletePumpkin pie is definitely one of my great loves. I don't really have a first choice though. I mean, all pie is pretty good.
ReplyDeleteI like pumpkin pie, but I find all the numerous seasonal pumpkin-flavored foods rather nauseating.
ReplyDeleteI’ve never been a big dessert eater (but give me a cheese plate and I’m in heaven.) I also feel that on Thanksgiving, people are often too full to enjoy it. ReplyDeleteIt’s my favorite pie! With loads of whipped cream!
ReplyDelete@wicked bee, I’d love to try a wild turkey one year. Wish I had a hunter in the family.
ReplyDeleteI don’t know that it’s my favorite, but definitely in my top 3. And pie is my favorite dessert—I do not discriminate ,(except pecan, I hate pecan).
