UK "Office" or US "Office" - which show was better?

  1. Well, I loved them BOTH but there is something so delightfully perverse about Gervais. UK

    The one with Rainn Wilson

  3. I tried to watch the US version once, but that faux documentary style is like nails on a chalkboard to me for some reason.

  4. British version all the way. It’s perfection. And the Tim & Dawn storyline was exactly how it should be.

  5. I'm a Brit and I prefer the American version. They're both good though. Rainn Wilson was awesome as Dwight.

  6. US. Carell is far superior to Gervais as an actor and brought a level of nuance to the character that made me want to watch. Gervais' character was one-note repulsive and, honestly, I felt that about every character in the UK version.

  7. I can't choose. They're both hilarious.

  8. I've obviously seen all of the UK episodes but only a few of the US ones as they aren't really that available over here, even online. So I would have to say the British version by default. That said, the few US ones that I watched have been very very good and I'd love to see a lot more.

  9. The US version did a better job of bringing heart to the supporting characters

  10. The US version. Much funnier. And Gervais owes a hell of a lot to Garry Shandling...

  11. Without doubt- UK. But I readily (and have often admitted to) a massive Ricky G crush. That said, the nuances and quirkiness(of UK) were more organic imo. The writing was more original as well... well it was the original....

  12. Neither. I am not a fan of that style of show, except for The Thick of It. Malcolm Tucker was a Shakespearian masterpiece.

  14. US. Paul Lieberstein is a genius.

Dwight's Speech: BLOOD ALONE MOVES THE WHEELS OF HISTORY! [pause] Have you ever asked yourselves in an hour of meditation - which everyone finds during the day - how long we have been striving for greatness? [bangs fist] Not only the years we've been at war - the war of work - but from the moment as a child, when we realize the world could be conquered. It has been a lifetime struggle [bangs fists again] a never-ending fight, I say to you [bangs again] and you will understand that it is a privilege to fight. WE ARE WARRIORS! [applause] Salesmen of north-eastern Pennsylvania, I ask you once more rise and be worthy of this historical hour. [even bigger applause as Dwight laughs maniacally] No revolution is worth anything unless it can defend itself. Some people will tell you salesman is a bad word. They'll conjure up images of used car dealers, and door to door charlatans. This is our duty to change their perception. I say, salesmen and women of the world... unite. We must never acquiesce, for it is together... TOGETHER THAT WE PREVAIL. WE MUST NEVER CEDE CONTROL OF THE MOTHERLAND... Audience: ...FOR IT IS TOGETHER THAT WE PREVAIL! [thunderous applause]

  15. Really? You thought every character in the UK version were "one note repulsive?" Seems extreme..

  16. I love them both but the scene where Gervais is playing the guitar to the group is so funny I think its my favorite from both shows. "Free love, on the Free love highway"

  18. Only seen the Uk version

  19. Never watched the UK version but find it hard to fathom Gervais topping Steve Carrell.

  20. UK Office. The US one was sappy and stupid and too long.

US version but only because I hate subtitles

  23. US version.

    That's what she said.

My ten year old daughter and I watch the US one all the time on Netflix. We like Parks and Rec, too.

  24. Absolutely UK. Once the US quit "remaking" the two UK seasons, it wasn't as funny, it got less so the longer (MUCH LONGER) it went on and I stopped caring about any of the characters (especially Jim & Pam. Part of the UK's appeal to me was also the sublime "cringe" factor, which Ricky Gervais has down pat.

  25. Admittedly, I could only force myself to watch the US version a couple of times. Steve Carrell is just not funny to me. But I LOVE Ricky Gervais, and The Office (UK) was awesome.

Someone mentioned subtitles, WTF? Why would anybody need subtitles for an ENGLISH show?

  26. UK. Not a wasted word or gesture. And it left us wanting more. US went on too long and characters were too broad. Lost the pathos of the original.

  27. If you like Getvaus stuff then treat yourselves and try to watch Extras and Life's Too Short. And also Steven Merchants American show, "Hello Ladies" . All very funny. Life's Too Short caught a lot of shit because of some of the near the knuckle content but at times is genuinely and literally breathtakingly funny.

  28. 'Gervais' not whatever the cunting fuckery 'Getvaus' is!!

  29. UK for me. I love Ricky Gervais! I thought his series Derick was excellent too, very funny but also quite moving in places. Also Karl Pilkington was a great bonus in season one! RG is the absolute king of cringe and awkward moments lol

  30. I loved the cartoon version of Gervais, Pilkington and Merchants podcasts as well! The podcasts themselves were extremely funny, but seeing some of those stories played out in cartoon was perfect!

  31. Is that even a question? UK. Duh

  32. I never watched the US one, I used to watch religiously the uk office back in the day, so funny

  33. UK! No question. Watch it every winter during the long cold nights.

The US version sort of embarrassed me too often with the try-hard, though that Dwight speech was fantastic.

  34. @Lonely Bastard - There's also the wonderful 'The Detectorists'- gentle humour with pathos - starring Mackenzie Crook who I think played 'Gareth' in The Office (UK version.)

  35. US, 100%. I'm British but I absolutely can't stand gervais.
