Blind Items Revealed #1

June 1, 2018

She really is a good actress and deserves that Oscar she has. This A list mostly movie actress, despite being the recipient of a lot of grief on the set of the movie she is promoting right now, says everything was hunky dory. She was singing a different tune during filming. Almost every other day or so.

Anne Hathaway

  1. Yeah, but now we have the world heritage treasure which is Ocean's 8, to be admired and contemplated alongside the Oresteia and Beethoven's Opus 130.

  2. AnnE Enty! It drew $16million last night, a record for the week I guess. Sequels are coming!😥

    1. God no! This franchise needed to die at least 10 years ago.

  3. Saying "Ocean's 8" looks like a piece of crap is no different than saying a new David Spade/Adam Sandler movie looks like a piece of crap. Same as with the "Ghostbusters" reboot, which I really hope is not getting a sequel. . I really don't understand the people blindly screaming sexism at those who simply see a pile of garbage for what it is.

Anne can be entertaining, I thought she was great in "Love And Other Drugs" and in the "Alice" movies. "Ocean's 8" just looks bad, though.

  4. I knew she was lying because there were reports she didn’t get along with Cate

  5. The blatant political and social agenda attached to Ocean's 8 is one of the primary reasons why I refuse to see it.

  6. I saw Oceans 8 yesterday. It was terrible. Prepare to completely suspend belief. My God, what a crapfest. I'm not politically or sexist inclined. This is just bad.

  7. "Ghostbusters" - 73% on RT
    "Ocean's 8" - 69% on RT

Film critics are not film critics any more. They are social agenda promoters. I haven't seen "Ocean's 8" and will not, but "Ghostbusters" was terrible.

It was like the people pushing "Wrinkle in Time" because it was "important." No, it wasn't. It was subversive and bad.

  8. Ocean's 8 looks awful to me because of the writing. I listen to the one liners, the character building, boring! If a trailer is boring, the film is sure going to be.

I am not interested in Hathaway. Don't like her or her film choices; and it's pretty clear how she got her early roles.

  10. Yes, she got them because she is a good actress.

  13. The brad Pitt/George Clooney Oceans were crappy, and I see no reason why this would be different

  14. The level to which they are trying to big this film up and the likes of Box Office Mojo and RT are "tweaking" their reports to try and push it is hilarious.

The estimated $15.8 million figure they're pushing as the "first day" gross includes $4 million from the Thursday previews (about $500K more than Ghostbusters), meaning the Friday gross will likely be around $11-12 million on 4K+ screens which, given that it's opening against zero competition, is just... meh. Word of mouth is also mostly just meh. Consensus is that the heist is silly and unbelievable, the actresses are good, Anne H is hilarious as, basically, herself, the characters are thin and the plotting is flat. The best description I've seen of it is "it's the sort of film you have on in the background while you're doing something else."

Audience score on RT is at 52%, it's hovering around 5.8-6/10 on IMDB. It was tracking at a $35-40m opening with the people pushing it desperate for it to crack $45m-$50m so they could declare it a smash hit. On these numbers and these reactions, the likelihood is that it will come in on estimate then sink when Incredibles 2 and Jurassic Park open next week and the week after. With a $40m-ish opening, and on a $70m production budget, O8 will probably hit the black at some point down the road during international release.

Seems to me people basically just don't care enough about this film or it's franchise to even hate it as much as Ghostbusters.

  15. The original Ghostbusters was a very popular movie, but its biggest fans with the most staying-power after all these years were mainly men around 40-60, especially men who like sci-fi and/or comedy. That was a pretty safe demographic for the studio to demonize, and they did so with gusto, framing a handful of offensive YouTube comments as a Thing that all decent people had to see the movie to combat.

As far as I know, fans of the previous Oceans movies were general audiences, so there's no easy enemy to demonize there. As Jonathan just said, no one cares either way. That's true of most movies these days, so it really shouldn't be a commentary on anything if it's true of this one, but PR people have to earn their pay somehow, so they'll probably try as they did with A Wrinkle in Time.

    1. That's not totally true - I'm a mid thirties woman who can quote the original Ghostbusters up and down, and have NO desire or intention of seeing the new one. I also liked the A Wrinkle in Time mini series so not really up for seeing the new version.

I identify as a feminist and am aware of what's wrong with the original Overboard (still love it though) and will not be seeing the lazy gender swap version either.

It's easy to point fingers at a conspiracy by studios but each customer needs to own their own choices. If you watch the trailer and it looks like a pile of 💩 wait till it's on Netflix or Amazon Prime don't give them a reward at the box office.

    2. I agree with A pathetic. I'm a woman who watched the ghostbuster movies as a kid and have always loved them! I hated the reboot. It just sucked, even though I'm a Melissa McCarthy fan.

  16. Come at me (please don't do that, actually): I think Anne Hathaway is darling.

  17. Anne is very talented, lots of X factor, and totally unlikable/unrelatable.

Movies as a whole are dead creatively.
Almost all the real action is in almost TV now.
And will only get more so.

Say what you want, but I like Anne, have since The Devil Wears Prada, and I loved her in those bizarre Depp Wonderland movies. And I like the Clooney Ocean's movies, even the third one, with Pacino taking literal bites out of the scenery with his dentures.

But i knew this was gonna go badly. None of the elements are there, that made the Oceans movies what they are - witty (for them) script, the chemistry of the ensemble, and a complicated but easy to follow plot.

This one doesn't have the writers, the director, the cinemaphotography, the sets, the plot, or the dialog. It just has a bunch of famous actresses in one movie - and I like all of them. But they don't have any chemistry. Or good lines. Or a plot. It's just a blatant milking of a franchise even Clooney seems to be tired of.

So yeah. Just a bump in the road for all of their careers. Still like Anne. So she's a complainer, that's nothing new, or original, that's how a lot of people process and vent anxiety. Annoying, sure, but not really gossip/blind worthy, it's just...dare I say it, catty. One of the enterns, most likely.

As for the Ghostbusters fiasco, I finally watched it recently. It blew goats. No, it really fucking stank to high heaven. It's just bad. It's not funny, it has none of the spirit or qualities of the original (hell, even the original guys couldn't recapture that lightning in a bottle with Ghostbusters 2, that one stank on ice, too), and I've finally admitted what a lot of people won't - I just don't like Melissa McCarthy. She's not funny, and she ruins everything she's in. She's supposed to be the comedic heavyweight (pun intended), but she can't cut it. She lucked out on Bridemaids, and ever since, they're making her out to be this comedic genius, when she's just fucking tiresome. The same jokes and lines and faces over and over and fucking over. Take a look at the new one she's got coming out, the Happyland Murders. It looks AWFUL. I like Kristen Wiig. She can be extremely good. McKinnon had her moments, she puts a lot of effort into her characters, even though she was trying a bit too hard in Ghostbusters. But McCarthy is the turd on the floor nobody wants to talk about. That, and the horrific script and direction.

McCarthy, Schumer, and Dunham are the worst things to happen to movies in the last decade. Fat women aren't automatically funny. They have to actually BE funny. But look, hah hah, the fat girl said "vagina"! Such genius!

Hey we all need movies that can be watched while we do stuff around the house. Liked Anne in Rachel Getting Married.

  20. Anne knows how to be professional when she's working, and she knows how to get along with difficult people. Anne was in a movie with Kate Hudson, and difficult as it was, Anne displayed the utmost discretion and professionalism.

  21. Ocean's 8 is what it is , a piece of entertaining schlock. Not good and not bad , no worse than 90% of the movies Hollywood has turned out for the past decade. It will get a sequel and I hope it has a lot more grit to it than this marshmallow. If I want to see Shakespeare I go to The Old Vic.....horses for courses. Much rather this than the endless boom/bang/crash of Super Hero movies (did I actually read someone complaining of having to suspend belief while watching a movie?)

  22. she deserved oscar for Rachel Getting Married

  23. The fact that some people seem to go out of their way to trash ‘Ghostbusters 2016’ or ‘Oceans 8’ because they are female led films, speaks volumes. Hey, you don’t have to like any film, just don’t go see it. But the amount of whining about it is ridiculous. Films can target different audiences even those groups that don’t include you.

    1. When you notice 1/10 reviews before the release of the movie you know what's up - watch the trailer and see how that hangs together.

I thought that may have been the case with 'Wrinkle' because it's a female director but I'm not sure.

  24. I just don't see Anne as unrelatable or unlikeable. For whatever reason, there's been a weird agenda of negative press about Anne H.

Take E!'s Daily Pop show. The presenter Morgan, who blows smoke up everyone (especially if they're a Kardashian/Jenner) has a visceral, angry reaction when Anne Hathaway's name is mentioned. Nothing AH has done warrants that.

It reeks of bullying a nice person. Nicole Kidman gets that as well. We're in a pop culture that gives preference to snarky, shady bitches and dark people.

  25. Anne H is a good actress. She's also terribly annoying. And her features are too big for her head. They all look too close together, which I find unsettling.

    ReplyDelete
  26. @Xanadu- you're making the case. many people just have a visceral negative reaction to Anne.
I'm not against her- it's just a fact.

I suspect it's because she gives off an unctuous, superior vibe, while trying to act "ordinary".
What people respond best to is talent being 'real' or congruent. Or seeming to anyway.

  27. Read something about how Anne agreed to be shackled to Weinstein's radiator. I'm choosing to just spew this as fact now, because I think it's kind of funny.
