Four For Friday - Twisted F**k

Everyone loves this actor. If you ask someone if they like him, they will say yes. He started out on television as a teen on a hit network show and has had some decent movie roles over the years. He is a lead, but one of those quiet leads who straddles the line between indie and box office getting those quiet box office movies. Generally the movies he leads are your movies that look like they are going to have some Oscar noms but always fall a little short. You all know him. Name to face? It is a tough one, but you all know the face. He is married. The thing is though, he is the guy who always leaves his wife at home even if he has a premiere. He got married to have people stop asking questions about his private life.

This story happened about a year ago and the actor paid a settlement and the victim signed a NDA, but is willing to speak here. Apparently our actor, even though he lives in town got a hotel room. He then found our victim on Grindr. Our actor is HIV+. Our actor didn't tell the victim that though. Our actor told the victim he liked rough sex and offered the victim $1000 for rough sex. The victim agreed and before he knew it he was tied up and being used. Our actor didn't use any protection and beat and basically raped the victim multiple times while the victim was restrained. At the end of it, the actor released the victim and actually gave him $1500 instead of the $1000 but had him sign an NDA. The NDA also included a provision that forbid the guy for suing if he caught any kind of STD from the actor.

Fast forward about six months and the victim discovered he is now HIV+. The only person he had unprotected sex with was the actor. When he tried to reach out to the actor he was shut down by his legal team and a pair of security people who visited the studio apartment of the victim. He was reminded of the NDA. When he threatened to go to the media, a repeat visit from the security guards and another letter from an attorney who threatened to sue the victim even though the victim was HIV+. Our victim got a lawyer. The lawyer managed to get $20K from the actor but that was it. He did also find out, the actor has done this to other men before. At least three other men that the lawyer discovered.

30 Rock from the Sun the big network show he was on as a teen

Movies like 50/50, 500 Days of Summer, The Walk, and Snowden are kind of exactly what enty described...somewhere between indie and box office and just short of being critically acclaimed enough to get Oscar buzz.

The moment I saw he was in that blasphemous anti-Christmas/anti-Christian "holiday" "comedy" called "The Night Before," with Seth Rogan, I figured JGL was a sick-o. Probably abused since childhood, so I'll try to summon up some empathy. Working with John Lithgow was probably hard, too.

Pretty much there is no such thing as an "ironclad" NDA and I don't understand why NDAs are keeping so many monsters on the streets.

All NDAs have a provision that says what happens if the NDA is broken and the "secret" is leaked. The answer is pretty much - I'll sue you for damages in a court of law.

But if you said someone broke an NDA to say a man raped you and gave you HIV, what sort of judge or jury would punish you for breaking the NDA?

  20. Did any of these incidents happen in California before it stopped being a crime to knowingly infect someone with HIV?

Any good lawyer (scroll up), will get that NDA invalidated simply on the grounds that the victim had no prior notification of his HIV status, and that the actors actions showed intent (and a pattern of behavior with the other victims) to knowingly and purposefully infect them.

If these victims get together with a good attorney, I can see papers flying in the opposite direction.

WRONG. According to Pew and Gallup the number of atheists in the USA is roughly 10%...and growing...as more atheists feel free to be honest about it.

    https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/2017/4/13/15258496/american-atheists-how-many

And to burst your bubble on international statistics, the designation "non-believer" is growing faster than any religion world wide.

    https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2016/04/160422-atheism-agnostic-secular-nones-rising-religion/

As far as politicians go, most are forced to say they believe but I'm fairly sure that many of those are lying outright. Do you really count Nixon and Reagan as Christians? If so, you have a mighty flexible definition for your terms.

    ReplyDelete
  24. @Chug, I don't think it's the NDA alone that keeps people quiet. It's the fact that the NDA will be pursued by lawyers who make more in an hour than the victim makes in a week, quite possibly in front of judges who are on the take. It's the fact that they know the perp has the media backing to destroy their reputation and drive/keep them out of the industry (assuming they're aspiring stars, which they probably are). It's the whole threat to their well-being, possibly including their physical well-being, that goes along with it.

  25. Also can a Californian explain to me the upside of decriminalizing the knowing transmission of an incurable, potentially deadly disease?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. @sign

I think the idea was to avoid criminalizing living with HIV to encourage people to get treatment. When “knowing”* is the litmus for a criminal act, a significant number of people respond by avoiding knowing.

I’m sure you can see the public health risks there.

I also recall something about there being other ways to prosecute the blatantly knowing transmission. Like the syringe example. (Assault with a deadly weapon)

It was and is a complicated issue but anything that gets the greatest number treatment and testing is in the public interest.**

*notoriously complex to prove under US law ****
**Especially with PREP and current treatment capable of reducing HIV to undetectable levels.***
***Its still a serious-ass disease, but treatments available these days make an enormous difference in the way it plays out.
****Kind of like the genetic testing debate. A lot of people would rather not know if there’s something deadly lurking that could cost them their insurance or employment if they knew about it.

  26. Dear victim:

Please come forward. The worst thing the rapist can do to you has been done. Challenge the actor to an HIV test. Challenge him to take a blood test to prove he is not on any medication that is or can be used to specifically treat HIV.

If you need money, people will donate. Go on disability if you have to. But please come forward.

  28. First: Did any of you see "The Night Before"? Barfing in a church on Christmas Eve was only one of many examples of blasphemy.

See many movies or TV shows where such vile behavior takes place in a mosque? A Jewish Temple? Of course you don't. Only Christians are fair game. Hollywood hates Christianity, that's why they remove it from source material even when it's critical to the narrative theme or message: "Unbroken," the latest "Ben-Hur," and most recently "A Wrinkle in Time." All failures, by the way. And of course there are many other examples.

As for the satanists, there are as many different branches of satanism, and they've got a helluva PR game running right now. Some of them are simply self-centered "do what thou wilt under the law" types, but there are also the much darker occult branches that worship an otherworldly being. I, too, have met self-declared satanists who were smart and seemed cool, but I don't know what they're up to at 3am under the full moon while I'm contently asleep.

Also a nod in the direction of this comment from @mercyprosperity:

    > It doesn't exist. At B list or above, they are into the rituals, the 'games', the ceremonies. You don't go higher without it. It's why my high school bff bolted from LA, several years ago.

I bolted as well. I've seen all this up close, gotten an inkling of what it is they really want. People who think all that's going on is going on at the surface, material world level, are deluded. By design.

Unbroken is a great example of secular-washing a movie tbh. The movie was okay but having read both his autobiography and Unbroken, I found the movie to be unanchored, hollow and emotionless. His story is one of faith in the Christian God, so steering around it left a hole, imo.

Maybe it was a different experience for those who came to the movie w/o that background.

I haven’t seen the movie, but I’m pretty sure a lot of churches have seen vomit on Christmas Eve. It’s a service a lot of people who don’t regularly go to church or spend time with their families do so and it can be incredibly stressful for them.

Stress vomit is a huge thing.

So is being marched to Christmas Eve/Easter services with a tummy bug.

I always felt sorry for my Christian friends growing up who were in that situation. By age 18, most of them had come out as atheist in part because they couldn’t reconcile the message with the practice.

But I can say I’ve been around my Satanist friends at 3am on the night of the full/new/gibbous/crescent/waning/waxing moon, and mostly they’d be either: drunk, playing board games, watching movies, sitting in a 24 hour diner, or hanging out around the campfire chatting. Pretty sure a lot of them were off having sex but I wasn’t THAT close friends. ;)

The part of this story that triggers my bullshit meter is the client accepting a payout of 20K with the help of a lawyer. That's is trifle , almost a charitable donation, if this victim had any sort of proof of his claims that a)he was assaulted and raped b)his HIV was contracted through his rapist.

What this victim claims must not have much credibility in court or for arbitration. Saying one only had unprotected sex that one time is not the same as proving it. No NDA agreement would stand in the way of filing a sealed civil court case.

    @Cail

I think that it's also a lack of evidence that prevents many from bringing cases against their abusers. It can't be stated strongly enough that anyone who is raped or abused MUST go to a hospital or doctor immediately for the taking of photos and other evidence.

The victim may have been afraid to come forward because money was exchanged. Many people, including some law enforcement believe sex workers cannot be raped.

I’m not presuming my examples are what happened in the movie. I’m just using them as examples to question why vomiting in church on Christmas Eve would be considered blasphemous.

It’s an honest question, not an attack. I really don’t understand what about it hits the Christian blasphemy button.

I’m also the one who replied tongue in cheek about Satanists at 3:00am under the moon. (Speaking of mainstream Satanism, the “an it harm none” branches). I believe plot replied with a focus on anthiests.

And I don't mean to demean sex professionals either nor suggest they can't be raped or abused. Gosh, I hope I didn't imply that anywhere.

I just find the payout of 20K rather strange. If there was any sort of proof of any aspect of this story, the lawyer could have pursued a whole lot more, even with a NDA, even without going to court.

I thought more people would place his face to his name after Inception, but he does seem to not be plastered all over supermarket checkout lines.

And I wonder, if the father is HIV+, could he pass it on to the child? JGL has two children.

However, the fact that his relationship is so private doesn't necessarily mean he's gay. He says they're very private because she's not a part of the industry and isn't interested in the spotlight.

  68. DDonna, I used to scoff at the "War on Christianity" claims until I realized that we simply do not see the same level of institutional disrespect from Hollywood and the media towards Judaism, Islam, and other major religions. Folks, the next time you see a story in the news about Christianity or a Hollywood joke about it, think about the reaction it would cause if the same story or joke was about Judaism or Islam. It's really eye-opening.

There was a local news story here last Christmas about a local politician who had her Nativity Scene stolen. The media and comment section trolls treated it like a joke and made the politician seem like a "nutty conspiracy theorist." Do you really think it would have been handled that way if a Menorah was stolen? Acts of disrespect like this are so common now that most people are blind to it.

Keep telling the truth, DDonna. It took me awhile to see it, but I finally came around.

P.S. I've always got a creepy vibe off JGL. If he's not the subject of this blind, then he probably has some other large skeletons in his closet.

    1. @Sadie that’s because it’s culturally acceptable to poke fun at your OWN religion and also the culturally dominant religion in the US. That means Christianity most of the time.

It’s not a war on Christianity so much as it is a change from making fun of “the other” (blackface, evil Asians, poor provincial Mexicans, exotic Muslims, sissy gays, nefarious butch women, etc) to making fun of “us.”

But I can see how it would feel shocking or like an attack coming on the heels of a time when it was grossly culturally unacceptable to make fun of Christianity or America.

  72. Why would anyone be surpris ed that some who earns money on Grindr would accept a low payoff? They more than likely not want someone in their family to know, and they agreed to rough sex,so they may have good reason. If you have no money,$20,000 is a lot. Also, they probably found out about the others after the agreement. If this is true, all of them together would have a case.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I suspect why the victim isn't coming forward and only got $20K is because he accepted money and gave consent for rough sex with someone he'd never met before, which is prostitution. Unfortunately there aren't a lot of legal protections for tricks gone wrong. Now from the story we can tell he was a victim, but a lawyer or publicist could paint quite a different picture. I won't do it here out of respect for the victim.
Hopefully he or one of the other victims will come forward soon to warn people about this monster so there aren't more victims.

    1. @Brayson You raise a good point especially if the victim is someone with Hollywood aspirations.

I’d hope that the multiple victims could turn things around in court. There aren’t many protections for prostitutes in states where it’s illegal, but when the prosecution can show a pattern, that’s been known to result in a conviction.

Chug - am I correct that an NDA designed to hide criminal activity isn't worth the paper it's written on? Knowingly infecting someone with AIDS is still illegal in CA, but it changed on Jan. 1 from being a felony to a misdemeanor w 6-month prison sentence.

    Joaquin Phoenix- not married
Jason Bateman- seen with wife frequently, stars in mainstream movies more than indies
Ryan Gosling- Sexiest Man Alive means most people know his name
Christian Bale- star of huge box office hits; even more well-known than RG
Michael Pitt- I don't personally recognize him but perhaps most people do, however he is not married
Johnnie Depp- wrong across the board
Topher Grace- snapped with his wife often. Also, I don't think he fits the description of "everyone likes him." Probably not him. Not ruled out
Fred Savage- mostly tv and scant indie credits
Jason Segal- doesn't seem to be married
Josh Peck- not mainly indie actor nor has he had any roles that generated any Oscar buzz, does everyone know his face?
Jared Leto- um, no. First of all, he fails the "everybody likes him" test. Not married.
Jonathan Tucker- most people would not know his face, and started in movies, not tv
    Keifer Sutherland- πŸ™„
Chris Pine- (at this point I'm getting cranky) ...no. Literally fails every single description.
Ben Foster- (finally a guess that does not make me want to bash something) I don't personally believe he fits the every likes him description and I can't remember him as a lead in any indie but it could be true. Not ruled out.
Giovanni Ribisi- (okay he wasn't a guess per se but he was mentioned and is better than many of the above guesses but is divorced so does not fit)
Freddie Prinze Jr- not primarily indie actor, no Oscar-buzz roles, did not get start as teen in tv hit
    Travolta- ....

I thought of Billy Crudup but he doesn't fit the blind either. For the hell of it, checked Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Harry Dean Stanton, John C. Reilly. They don't fit or ate dead.
