Oscars
One of the more rude comments someone overheard last night was directed towards this groundbreaking female talent who broke a barrier. She was upset at losing and some old cranky guy said she needed to wait her turn and get in line.

What an asshat.
ReplyDeleteWas her loss to Deakins somehow unfair? He is a far superior cinematographer and her work on Mudbound is no better than the other nominees.
ReplyDeleteWise words from the old cranky one.
ReplyDeleteCranky guy was right.
ReplyDeleteWTF business is it of this old dude whether she's upset or not? Unsolicited schooling is annoying and rude. What is he, the Disappointment Police?
ReplyDeleteUnsolicited schooling is typical of grumpy old guys.
DeleteWho ?
ReplyDeleteThere's 2 kinds of upset, crying because she's upset and disappointed she lost. Or upset and screaming "Fucking bullshit I lost because I'm a woman". One justifies what he said, one doesn't.
ReplyDeleteConsidering the blind itself characterizes the comment as "one of the more rude comments of the night," I'm assuming it was the former.
ReplyDeleteIn addition to being just plain rude, old cranky guy displaying outdated generational thinking. Just because that’s the way it worked back in the day doesn’t mean that should be the expectation today.
ReplyDeleteDeakins should have already won a fistful of Oscars, so he had it coming.
ReplyDeleteJack Cardiff only won one Oscar and he’s the greatest ever. This chick is from the participating trophy generation.
ReplyDeleteAgree with @Catsup and @Sandybrook regarding the comment. Unless she was making a stink about her work being more deserving (which would be a surprise), I suspect it was just an ass-hat telling her she shouldn't be upset. He should have just shut the hell up.
ReplyDeleteIf she had any sense of reality she'd have known she wasn't going to win from the instant the nominations were announced.
ReplyDeleteSo?
ReplyDeleteJust googled she's 39. The old guard of HW will say something like that to her, she needs to keep working & paying her dues.
ReplyDeleteShe shot Black Panther too, so she'll be crying into a big bag of cash. Nb. Betting on black won't get you an Oscar.
ReplyDeleteNo class, but it's probably far from the worst thing an older man has done to a younger woman during the ceremony.
ReplyDelete"Mudbound" described the picture's look. Poor lighting choices abound, looked "Made for Netflix," start to finish. There was an absurd hype around that one that was not justified, and she's delusional if she thought she had it in the bag for that murk. "Panther" was her reward. Nothing special about the cinematography on that one, either. Maybe "get better" would have been more tactful than "Wait your turn."
ReplyDeleteI would rather have that Black Panther money than an Academy Award. I swear those things are cursed.
ReplyDeleteMeh. Cranky old guy's not wrong.
ReplyDeleteLosing would suck, but if ya gotta lose, lose to someone like Deakins. He truly is brilliant.
ReplyDeleteThat's the best way to handle poor sports who cry over losing!

ReplyDeleteNatasha Braier the lady who shot 'The Neon Demon' genuinely deserved a nomination for cinematography
