Back in the day, this band was one of the most popular acts touring America. They were a traveling party and their fans worshipped them.
Some of their fanbase was very young. Too young to legally consent to certain activities. And tragically, an adult male on the fringe of the rock scene in
one part of the USA who looked a great deal like one of this band's lineup took cruel advantage of a few kids and their star struck naiveté, convincing them
he actually was a star in this group. He lured them to motels and did very illegal things to these kids. Stories started floating around about what was happening.
The manager knew he had a huge problem on his hands. This musician was no boy scout, as he loved to party and loved his drugs. But he wasn't
a child abuser. The manager soon talked with a leader within a certain very notorious subculture (these guys DO NOT like being referred to as a 'gang').
The members of this subculture were greatly offended anyone would abuse their friend's celebrity in such an evil way. The two commiserated over how the musician's reputation could suffer enormously if he was thought by police and the public of committing the crimes that his lookalike had. They needed a plan.
The very scary if he wasn't your friend leader assured the manager he'd take care of it soon. And he did, with some other very scary friends of his.
The lookalike conman predator soon disappeared. Did he get a stern warning to leave town permanently? Was he beaten into a bloody pulp and maimed?
Killed?! Not exactly sure (the scary guys tend to not talk about these matters publicly), but he wasn't out impersonating and raping anyone on that scene anymore. Can't imagine
anybody, even law enforcement, if he was on their radar back then, are too concerned about his general welfare after he did these things that made him such dangerous enemies."

I went to plenty of dead shows when I was underaged. The Ventura ones were the best with the beach camping. There was definitely a young following throughout the 80’s.

If it was the Dead it would have been Bobby being impersonated, he's the rhythm guitarist and the lead singer for at least half their catalogue. He was also the babe of the band, back in the day, having joined up when he was 14.

ReplyDeletePicturing 80s/Gen-X kids getting newly recruited into the cult of an aging Grateful Dead is kind of LOL. It's a little funny since this band was THE quintessential face of the hippie 60s. But where it all kinda faded away the Dead were still there, unchanged, and still gaining new flowery followers. Kids most likely wishing they had been born early enough for that notorious heyday of Rock n Roll counter-culture, though AFAIC, they were just as well missing out on the best stuff happening in their time (which at this point of Rock n Roll wasn't always mainstream). Also if some of those actual traveling cult 'followers' were UNDERAGED then I don't wanna think about it. None of that sh** sounds appealing.

Well if it was 'Dead and the HA, which makes sense, the real backstory is that the "management" were trying to cover for Garcias liking for very looking underage girls. Which was common gossip in Marin County in the 1980's. He was involved with a succession of them. Dumped when they started looking too old. From what I hear the HA are just as active locally now as they were back then. Heard some great stories back then out of the bailbond place across the street from the County Courthouse. All the best barbershops share buildings with bailbond offices. The one in Santa Venetia was the best. The one in Redwood City ran it a close second.
ReplyDeleteI had never even listened to a Grateful Dead album and I would still go hang out around the venue/area they played at whenever they appeared in my city without having ever gone into one of their shows, just because it was an all day/night party atmosphere, where you could get away with lots of activities in downtown public you normally wouldn't have at any other time of the year bar a championship parade. There were plenty of drugs, and it was plenty easy to find n buy them. I imagine there were plenty of non-fan teens in any city/location where the Dead regularly appeared who would hang out around the scene for however many days they were in town playing up until Garcia's death/the end of the steady touring.
