Blind Item #10

This permanent A+ list mostly movie director is getting the press to spread an idea he has to be able to see and interact with thousands of underage teens each year. He can't wait.

  2. Spielberg and the mandatory holocaust class he wants schools to have.

If he had this plan in mind while making Schindler's List, I have to be impressed at his ability to play the long game...

  4. The Holocaust *should* be discussed in school Social Studies programs, maybe make The Diary Of Anne Frank required reading at a certain grade level, as there have been reports that a lot of millennials aren't even aware it ever happened. But an entire program/class devoted to it? What school can spare that kind of time? Or are they talking about an assembly for each grade? That would be another thing.

    1. I’d like to see a semester long mandatory class on genocide. Holocaust, Khmer Rouge, Armenia, Kurds, and so on and so forth. It would benefit the future if people learn to understand and recognize the way genocide becomes a thing.

  6. If SS is pursuing under-aged girls via a Holocaust awareness project, I really can't imagine many things more evil than that. It's like peak sinister.

  7. +Sdaly I agree, also people need to learn that evil is present in many forms and permeates humanity regardless of culture or race.

Why is SS getting this kind of protection? Because he helped the firm with CEOT3K and ET he gets protected for life?

  9. b/c he's filthy rich and has connections? i'm almost sure nothing he's done will ever be made public. if it does, it'll most likely be when he kills over, which isn't any time soon.

  10. @SDaly, don't forget the Bolshevik Red Terror of 1918 and perhaps a few years thereafter.

  11. "I'm sorry, but this mass genocide that just about wiped out the entire population of a certain group of people in Europe has had its time in the sun."

    WTF.

They can ALL be mentioned in schools. The sheer scale of the Holocaust makes it extremely relevant, as is the fact that Hitler was also targeting homosexuals, Gypsies, political enemies and the mentally and physically "deficient". It is never NOT going to be relevant.

I did work in a NYC school a couple of years ago and they were teaching about the potato famine among other things. They teach about Stalin and the pogroms. Slavery is being taught about. They can all be touched on.

  12. @DoTell, Diary of Anne Frank and Holocaust are both required at a lot of schools as part of general history and literature.

  13. I think it's hard to overestimate how much protection billions of dollars can buy. Ask yourself how big a check it would take to make you walk away and keep it to yourself that you heard screams or saw someone come out of a room with torn clothing. Most people have a price, a number that would allow them to convince themselves there was an innocent explanation for what they saw. If that price averages $50K, a billion could buy off 20,000 such people.

That's before even adding the factor that so many people love and respect him for his films that they wouldn't want to believe it anyway. When they start to think about the shade it would cast on films like Schindler's List, there's another reason to resist.

  14. How wealthy is Spielberg? Obviously he is to some extent, but I don't think his power derives from his wealth. It derives from his career and the powers he serves.

    ReplyDelete
  15. @SDaly yet something like 75% of students know nothing about the Holocaust which was the largest genocide. You're a dick. It doesn't give anyone a right to exploit it, if this is what this blind is about.

I beg to differ. I bet the descendants of humans trafficked via the slave trade beg to differ too.

Hitler killed Roma, blacks, disabled, homosexuals, and other "deviants." The Jews aren't the only people on earth to suffer persecution.

  16. While we're at it, let's go ahead and get rid of slavery in the history books. Surely it's had its due "time in the spotlight". Plus it's been 100s of years. At least the Holocaust was near the mid 20th century.

  18. @SDaly

    Agreed.

Don't forget the Atlantic Slave Trade. And what the Spanish, the Portuguese and the Roman Catholic Church did in the Americas. One or two pages in history books on the matters is pitiful.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I love @T.W. but going to disagree with the Catholic Church in the Americas. Historically, the countries where the RC missionized managed to maintain a native population, identity and culture. Whereas those colonized by Protestants got Anglicized and eliminated. That is partially due to the "Make the world England" policy of the British monarchy, but it also happened in primarily Protestant Dutch colonies too.

  20. @Doug, Wikipedia says $3.6B. But I agree with you, it's not just his considerable wealth. It's also the even greater wealth and power of people he's connected to, including those he may have shared a vacation spot with.

  22. The world learned/re-learned a LOT of lessons as a result of WWII and the Holocaust. Lessons about unchecked government authority, the ability for a few to deceive the many, when times get tough your "leaders" will desert you, etc. etc. These lessons must absolutely be taught to our children. Names, dates and numbers are not as important as the lessons. My $0.02.

  23. Yeah. Catholics just made them work as slaves on missions. >.<

Talk to any native person (most prefer to be called Indians btw), they are more suspicious of Catholics than any other Christian group (@least on the west coast)

  24. Largest Holocaust? - Lets see If Holodomor ever gets taught in schools.
Yes lets not forget the Altantic slave trade, lets pay attention in particular to the surnames of those "white"
slave owners and who owned the shipping companies that made it possible.

  25. I'm fine with the Jewish Holocaust being taught in schools, but calling it "The Holocaust" elevates it above many other larger scale ethnic genocides.

It's become a Meme at this point that "the holocaust" is the worst thing humans have ever done. Teaching a whole class on it only exacerbates this misperception!

Personally, I find this misperception to be the main reason Israel is able to deflect criticism for occupying/expand into Palestine

I'd rather see slavery taught about in all of it's incarnations, and how it's been around since the beginning, and still exists now. Irish were taken as slaves by the Brits. The Arabs were major slave traders. The Dutch and French were huge slave traders, who were the primary channels of African slaves, to feed their plantations in the Caribbean. Slavery has always existed, in many forms, but the only one anyone teaches is the slave trade in the US. The very idea that the US is the only bad country to engage in slavery is laughable and comes from politics - every nation and culture has had slavery at some point in history. We're ALL guilty of it, in a historical context.

And, regarding the Catholic church and slavery, go read about what the Portugeuse and the Jesuits did in Japan in the 15th century. It got so bad the Emperor banned Christian missionary work in Japan.

    2. And the broader teaching about slavery throughout all cultures, history, and parts of the world, instead of the narrow basis of the American brand of it, might make future generations much more aware and caring of the vastness of modern day slavery and willing to take action and efforts towards ending it, instead of the myopic view that it's an already dead issue and problem of the past that the exclusive focus on America seems to engender in many people

  27. I'm with S.I.N. (heh) on the matter. It's amazing to watch hard-line Israeli cheerleaders short circuit when someone like a Finkelstein comes along and busts their defenses to nothing. Being the victims of genocide doesn't excuse your own genocidal impulses. Harping on the Holocaust while harboring people who deny the Armenian Genocide of Turkey pretty much gives the lie. It makes some sense that World War II would be "THE" Holocaust, given its presence in living memory and being carried out in the global West where it's much harder to sweep under the rug, but it shouldn't somehow override or erase other atrocities.

The problem is that people see America using Israel as a driving wedge in the Middle East as the capital-lettered Jewish Conspiracy instead of a symbiotic relationship between two parasites, and you end up with this 'wag the dog' bullshit driving everyone nuts. The point has come now where nobody actually listens or gives a shit when people in the Ukraine are actively rehabilitating the legacies of Nazi officers, and it's because the Jewish Conservative Persecution Complex has been busy crying wolf and slandering anyone who tries to blow the whistle on Israeli war crimes for the last few decade.

Alan Dershowitz' putrid fucking face should be a registered hate symbol.

I'm not attacking you but your comment. Please do a little more research. I am in a graduate program. I learned this information both as an undergraduate and during grad school.

Many indigenous peoples of the Americas no longer exist. The Roman Catholic Church kept them as slaves, along with Africans. Their was a hierarchy based on race, with blacks at the bottom.

  31. Also teaching ALL of these things would be great if we could do it, but instead we're actively gutting our public education system for parts and means-testing schools based on an avalanche of standardized tests. All those "save our music and theater programs" charities are going to have to switch to English, phys ed, and everything that won't be useful to either writing code or being a "digital gardener" to train optimization engines.

Really? Doesn't even seem like it was a bump in the road for the gypsies.

If you're referring to a different group, there's no shortage of that 'certain group' throughout the Western world or Israel. I agree with SDaly that there have been many more just as significant (if not more so) annihilation events/genocides in modern history that could use a little time in the spotlight.

  41. @Sign Definitely do some more reading on Spanish and Portuguese in the Americas. Especially the Portuguese, but only if you have a strong stomach.

In many parts of the Americas, the conquistadores discovered that the natives tended to die quickly when enslaved. It didn’t go well. And while populations were indeed wiped out.

Many of those who survived did so by adopting a form of Catholicism that was compatible with their native beliefs, at least in Mexico. Mexican Catholicism is still fascinatingly and uniquely pagan in many areas.

It’s also probably fallacious to lump all the Catholics together as the Jesuits were often on the side of preserving the locals.

And @SD the terminology depends. Some tribal members and descendants prefer Native American, some First Nations, and some Indian/American Indian. But yeah, the socially appropriate English label is Native American or First Nations (in Canada).

I’d like to see a semester long mandatory class on genocide...

This sort of course is taught in my university. They have courses devoted to the evolution of fascism around the world as well as Nazi Germany in particular. That's because the students who will sign up for that course will already be driven to learn all about that subject; presumably they are avid history students who want to go on to teach in universities themselves.

But in high school, you only ought to be taking generalized survey courses. The students in high school are only finding their focus, and wouldn't necessarily want to study holocausts and genocidal crimes for an entire year.

Fox has started pimping out Bohemian Rhapsody with zero mention of who gets final director credit. Singer will fight for it, undoubtably. Trying to straightwash it already as well PR-pairing the leads malek/boynton. anything to distract from Singer, they think they have an oscar nod for their final bait under the fox banner before its absorbed by disney.

stacy snider is complicit and I WISH all of those at Fox would be exposed for how they have covered up and enabled Singer's behavior and predation for YEARS. if this straightwashed queen film directec by this predator gets award nods Ill be furious - I feel like SO MANY are getting off. not a single peep about dan schneider. all of the geffen pedo gang silent. its like a suspicious lull. its devastating.

THE WORLD OF BUSINESS about Edgar Bronfman and his purchase of MCA, Inc. from Matsushita, (now renamed Universal Studios) ...Edgar Bronfman, Jr.,’s odyssey in the world of entertainment, which began in earnest three years ago, has been wild even by the standards of a volatile industry... Bronfman is seeking to acquire British music company EMI for about ten billion dollars... Describes how he sold most of Universal's cable and domestic-television assets, including the USA cable network, to Barry Diller's HSN, Inc. The deal gave Universal a stake in the company—and the possibility of regaining control of its assets in the future... Bronfman was widely disparaged for the deal in the Hollywood business community... From the start, Bronfman has developed a near-scorn for much of what existed at MCA, run by Lew Wasserman and Sidney Sheinberg for decades... Describes the sale of MCA by Wasserman and Sheinberg to Matsushita in 1990, and how Bronfman, alone, negotiated his purchase of the firm from the Matsushita president, Yoichi Morishita... Describes how Bronfman sold Seagram's share in DuPont in order to buy MCA—a deal which may have cost shareholders more than nine billion dollars in DuPont-related gains... Bronfman's role model in the entertainment business is the late Steve Ross... Michael Ovitz was picked by Bronfman to be studio head, but the Bronfman family balked at the huge compensation package he demanded, and BRONFMAN eventually turned to DAVID GEFFEN and DREAMWORKS for expertise on running his new company... Describes the favorable deal Geffen cut with Bronfman... Ultimately, almost all the top-level executives of MCA were fired or resigned in a preemptive strike... As part of the overhaul, Seagram brought in an army of corporate reengineering consultants from Booz Allen and Price Waterhouse, and they labored for more than two years, at a cost in excess of seventy-five million dollars. ...Bronfman chose the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas to design Universal's new corporate headquarters as part of its planned expansion... Describes the poor financial state of the television division when Bronfman acquired MCA... Tells how he sold the TV division to Barry Diller with an option to repurchase it... Mentions that he kept Universal CEO Frank Biondi out of the loop on the sale... Bronfman may become the rescuer of DreamWorks, which has not had a hit, if its "Prince of Egypt" animated feature does not pan out... There is speculation that Seagram might take on a partner in the EMI deal, such as the financial investor Kohlberg Kravis Roberts... Bronfman said, “As C.E.O. of the company that owns this one, I’m going to get my way, but I don’t have to yell about it.” He added, “The paradigm out here in Hollywood is to manage by intimidation and fear. One of the things I’ve heard out here is ‘He’s soft.’ Well,” he concluded, “time will tell.”
