Smashing Pumpkins
They charged too much for tickets and skipped a lot of venues, stuff happens.
ReplyDeleteI am noticing suddenly that 1000s of tickets are disappearing and venues that were stacked with tickets one day....sold out the next. Think they are buying out the tickets themselves.
ReplyDeleteYou'd be surprised at how angry fans are that DArcy wasn't included. I don't think Corgan expected the backlash.
ReplyDeleteExactly, sandybrook. I think they underestimated calling this a full out reunion but not including D'arcy.
ReplyDeleteI've seen a lot of concerts over the past 20 years. I've seen the Pumpkins twice and don't have any urge to see them again. I'd rather see an older band like the current line up of Cheap Trick or newer artists like Jack White and LCD Soundsystem. '90s grunge doesn't sound like a good time. Hell, I'd subject myself to Phish before I'd go see the Pumpkins again. They're buying the tickets themselves and will be giving them away to save appearances.
ReplyDeleteThe whole concert going thing has been chipped away at over the years by ridiculously high prices, terrorist attacks, poor quality acts, lipsynching, and easy access to music online, and a huge upgrade in the quality of home entertainment. So a has-been band (who I loved back in the day) reuniting isn’t going to get me out of the house for nothing.
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah, I'd be way more likely to be interested in the Pumpkins if D'arcy was included. Billy's ego is a little too much.
ReplyDeleteAnyone remember this is spinal tap. They cancelled on Boston because “it’s not a big college town anyway”
ReplyDeleteLol. Puppet Show

Spinal Tap
Yeah, Normal -- that's a GREAT line! And Billy definitely fits the Spinal Tap mold. He probably watched it when he was 15 and thought it was a training film, not a mockumentary.
ReplyDeleteEvery nineties band is touring at the same time, they are near the bottom of the list.
ReplyDeleteCould Billy's unhinged Alex Jones show appearances have anything to do with it?
ReplyDelete$100/ticket is a lot. And the scalper bots are out of control. You ever buy a ticket right at the on sale? Enjoy the nosebleed seats, but magically StubHub has the best seats in the house, marked up 50%
ReplyDeleteAgreed, sandybrook.
ReplyDeleteWhy did they plan to play arenas? Artists who are much more current are having a tough time selling tickets these days. Someone's ego(s) caused this mess.
ReplyDeleteSkittleKitty -- I like your name. Yes, he should have stuck to clubs, like the Fillmore in SF or the Wiltern in LA. He probably would sell out clubs that size. I'd actually be way more inclined to see them in a club.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, they were never a great live act anyway.
ReplyDeleteI'd pay big money to see them because I enjoyed them live but not without D'Arcy. Billy thinks "his band" is enough, but it's nostalgia and his ego is what killed the band in the first place. Get over yourself, dude.
ReplyDelete7 more weeks before I knock off my musical bucket list and get Baptist ed by the legend, rock with Sully and finish off with some Grohl 3 days. At any rate, i am mostly and Alt Rock fan, but never a fan of Billy Corgan, I will even take Janes Addiction over him, (while i LOVE Dave, Perry has a really awful voice)
ReplyDeleteDon't really care for smashing pumpkins.
ReplyDeletePumpkins was my first concert in 96 I'm getting old!
ReplyDeleteI just went to the Bananrama reunion concert. Regular tickets were $38 and $55, and it was in a 2200 capacity theater. Billy should take a lesson.
ReplyDeleteI met Billy Corgan when I was 11 years old. My friend and I recognized him in the VIP booth at a concert my dad took us to. Despite being so young and recognizing him BY NAME (pretty impressive for a kid), he couldn’t have been ruder. We hadn’t even asked for anything. Just, “You’re Billy Corgan!” And then he goes, “So?” and shoos us away with a condescending wave. We were heartbroken.
ReplyDeleteI've met him too, and he was a dick. Also, I just remember this juicy little tidbit. In the late '90s, my friend was a music critic for Las Vegas Weekly. He was backstage at a Smashing Pumpkins show and Billy/James had a 3rd guitarist in the wings, adding to stage sound. I thought was such a pussy maneuver. At least put the guy on stage!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE 1979!
ReplyDeleteThe dude Billy Corgan is as mean as he looks. Nasty fellow! I loved their music back in the 90s but not enough to pay to go see them again now. They just don't carry.
ReplyDeleteWhen you're a vintage act you have to be REALLY good to play large arenas and sell them out. They needed better marketing.
Another juicy tidbit? He's a hypocrite and this is why. Billy always preached about being honest, be yourself, be the freak that doesn't fit in, blah blah blah. But you'll never, ever catch him in a short sleeve shirt. The guy is covered in huge birthmarks. He has every expectation and judgement for everyone else, yet was so vain, he worried about anyone seeing birthmarks? He treated everyone like shit, still does. He's a douche. Chicago hates him.
ReplyDeleteIf Billy is there Im there , I've seen them like 20 times at least, Id totally pay good money to see them again and again
ReplyDeleteI met Billy once, he was really nice to me *shrug*
90's bands are the best bands imo, I'd gladly pay to see a 90's band over the crap out today lol
Court b - always wondered about the long sleeves thing. Thanks for the tidbit.
ReplyDeleteI liked them back in the day, but would only maybe see them now in a small, local venue. I did see them back in their prime on either the Horde Feat or Lollapalooza and Billy was an ass. He stopped in the middle of the first song and went after a guy in the front row because he was wearing Ted Nugent t-shirt. The guy wasn't doing anything wrong, just enjoying the show, when he basically told him to Get the f**k out out of his show because TN is a racist, bigoted, homo-hating asshole!!. I'm no fan of Ted Nugents music or politics, but this concert was in lower Michigan where Nugent is from and is considered a local legend, so someone wearing one of his shirts was quite common. They showed the whole thing on the Jumbotron and you could tell that the guy was mortified and then others in the audience started yelling and fighting both against Billy and others against TN. The tirade and whole ordeal took about 15-20 minutes with the guards having to come down and remove the guy and It ruined the whole show. Why was D'Arcy left out of the reunion?
ReplyDeleteHonestly...this doesn't surprise me one bit. The Pumpkins weren't all that great to begin with and for them to call this a reunion without D'arcy and ask the price they are requesting for tickets? Yeah...Nahh....It's not like this group was AIC, SoundGarden or Pearl Jam status. That and....Corgan legitimately struck me as extremely pretenious.
