Today's Blind Items - First Kills

This serial killer has admitted to almost a handful of killings. They were pretty famous at the time they happened. The thing is though, those are not the only kills he is responsible for. There are at least two more. One of the kills was of someone who had a number one best selling book and the subject of a very highly rated made for television movie. The serial killer made it look like an accident, did a crappy job if it, but still got away with it. His second kill was of a relative who molested the serial killer. Everyone assumed the serial killer was responsible, but no one could admit it. Recently, the serial killer has been telling his story to a couple of inmates who have been sharing it to others and now new charges could be brought against the serial killer.

    1. I spelled Staynor wrong. My apologies to the Staynor family. I Know My First Name is Steven is one of the saddest books I have ever read. May Steven rest in peace.

  4. Def Carey Staynor. His brother Steven died in a 'motorcycle" accident. carey often said he had a bad childhood as his parents always mourned the disappearance of his brother. His uncle was accused of molesting him when he was 11.
His parents have stood beside him, saying he should have gotten treatment, though of course they never appeared to try to get him help.

    1. What I don't understand is the person from the hit-and-run came forward after Steven's funeral? So Cary paid this person to kill his brother? Or was that Cary and he turned himself in?

    1. @S D Auntie - The parents were mourning over Steven, whom they thought was dead. They neglected Carey the entire time. The book, the movie, and Wikipedia mention this. Then Steven comes home and is honored as a hero because he rescued a kidnapped child. There is even a statue and I think a street was named after him.

Add to that the fact Carey was being molested and had mental health issues to begin with you have a recipe for trouble.

    2. Wow. Thanks @Tw. I really thought it was an accident. This is really sad!

    3. @Sd Auntie - You are welcome. If you can't find the book the movie may still be on YouTube. Wikipedia gives a good summary (for once).

By the way, Carey was sentenced to death for the other murders. California has a moratorium so Carey lives for now. There are some reports that he is autistic so even if the parents did all they could for him there was little help available back then.

    4. Plus Steven's parents were lenient with him, after his return. And he had some money, I forgot how Steven got the money, but I can see how the brother could be jealous.

    5. @cat - Thanks for adding that. Steven may have been given reward money for rescuing his replacement.

The parents mourned Steven to the point they worshipped him. He was a heavy drinker, but to be fair, Parnell plied him with alcohol and drugs to make him compliant. Stockholm Syndrome set in to the point where Parnell did not have to drug, coerce, or threatened violence. Steven took his replacement to the police and then tried to return to Parnell.

Steven saw himself as a willing participant instead of a kidnapped and abused victim. Even his widow talked about how bad his pain was. Can you imagine being so psychologically damaged that you willingly return to person who kidnapped and abused you?

  7. NBC used to show the movie all the time. As upsetting as it was, the book was sadder. One thing that got me is that Steven's kidnapper first took him to a cabin that was a few hundred feet from where his grandparents were.

Steven got a bad deal in life and being murdered by his brother makes me sadder for him.

    3. Oh, definitely put him down for the other terrible stuff he's done. Honestly, I dont know the story but it sounds heartbreaking.

    4. @rosie riveter - You must be really young! I Know My First Name is Stephen aired on NBC like clockwork. It was a 2 night event. Corin Nemec was the teenaged Steven. Arliss Howard was the kidnapper/abuser. The real Steven can be seen, he was one of the police officers that helped the boy Steven rescued.

The Wikipedia article on the book and film is accurate, which I find shocking. The book was absolutely sad. The film might be on YouTube in 2 parts.

    6. @ rosie riveter - please do not call yourself old!

I don't watch much tv anymore. I like the Old Hollywood blinds best even though most of the people were before my time. Those stars had talent and I can recognize them faster than the current Hollywood crowd.

  9. Def. Carey Staynor. Steven’s story was so incredibly sad. When Carey was found out to be a serial killer I always wondered if maybe he had a hand in Steven’s accident.

    ReplyDelete
  10. SD Auntie, Carey had mental problems since early childhood, he was jealous of the attention Stephen received, especially after the movie. He really didn't need a motive, being as damaged he already was.

  11. Obviously Cary Stayner...the "accident" is the motorcycle crash that killed his brother Steven Stayner, and the other murder being the murder of his Uncle Jesse, who he accused of molesting him.

  13. Such an incredibly tragic story and family. If Cary did kill Steven, he should be tried for that crime. However, the uncle that molested him? Nah.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Especially if his parents condoned/defended the uncle (I don't know if they DID, but I'm just saying IF this were the case). You know how parents get when it's a family member. It's something like a combination of being in-denial and saving face.

  14. How would he have staged the motorcycle accident? A migrant worker pulled out in front of Steven and turned himself in.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. @Steve D - I am not familiar with all the details. Perhaps Carey did something to Steven's bike that would have killed him whether or not the migrant was there.

Perhaps the accident already happened and the migrant thought he caused it because he was drunk at the time.

Perhaps as the blind states, the accident was poorly staged, Carey knew it, and got the migrant to claim he hit Steven by accident. No one suspects Carey and the migrant would be deported.

  16. This is the shit that pisses me off so much about Parnell and so many others:

"Parnell was convicted of abducting Stayner and White in separate trials. He was sentenced to seven years for the abduction of White and was paroled after five years.[2][3] Parnell was not charged with sexual assault because most offenses occurred outside the jurisdiction of the Merced County prosecutor or were outside the statute of limitations."

    Replies
    1. @Din Kieballs - Parnell had a record by the time he abducted Steven and was working as a park ranger.

Not only that, Carey White is suspected to have autism. There was no appropriate treatment back then. If Carey had proper mental healthcare, was not neglected by his parents, and was not molested *maybe* he would have turned out differently.

    3. There was a study a while back, of convicted murderers across the country. The results were shocking, but people rarely talk about it. I think they didn't want people to treat children with autism differently, or not want to have people stop adopting them, fostering them...anyways. the study found something like 90% of convicted murderers had autism, or aspbergers, or variations. Now that doesn't mean 90% of people with autism are murderers, but that 90% if convicted murderers were autistic. So, we're they more likely to get caught because of being autistic? Or were they more likely to view murder as an option? I have no idea. But it was a very interesting study. A scary read for sure, especially after Florida this week

    4. Court B, is this the study: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2634865/Recipe-serial-killer-revealed-Childhood-abuse-autism-head-injuries-common-murderers-study-claims.html

    5. Thank you Court b. From my personal observation, some autistic people see criminal activity as a logical solution to a problem. I also notice they process emotions differently. I am sure other factors are involved.

  22. Don't forget this gem about Parnell - after he did his time for kidnapping Stephen and trying to abduct another child (was it Tara Burke? I can't remember) (he had already been busted for sodomizing a child while posing a cop):

In January 2003, Parnell was arrested again after trying to coerce his caregiver into buying him a four-year-old boy.[5] Parnell was, by this time, 71 years old and in ill health, suffering from diabetes and emphysema, plus other ailments brought on by a stroke that he had suffered earlier, requiring near 24-hour-a-day nursing care in his cluttered apartment in the 2600 block of Mathews Street in Berkeley.

The caregiver, Diane Stevens, was aware of Parnell's past and cooperated with police in setting up a sting operation that would lead to his arrest. According to Diane Stevens' testimony, Parnell requested that the child have a "clean" rectum, indicating sexual intentions.[6] He paid $100 for a birth certificate and had $400 on his person for the completion of the transaction when he was to receive the child on January 3, 2003. Parnell was arrested that day.[6]

  24. Yes, Cary Stayner killed two women and two teen girls, I remember one being an exchange student from South America. They were killed near Yellowstone Park, one was decapitated and others were burned. It was a huge news story even before the murderer was discovered and his connection to Steven's story, which made it an even stranger and more sensational story.
