Today's Blind Items - The Dancing Boy - The Long Shadow Of Abuse

What I didn't say in my previous email was that the near miss was preceded by years by an event that would shadow me for the rest of my childhood.

I was young at the time, still going to a school where you have the same teacher all day. The man - a trusted friend of the family - was a network exec. (My father also worked in the business.) You wouldn't know his name, as with the exception of certain CEOs most of these men are fairly anonymous cogs who by virtue of hard work or connections have risen to high levels. They're not without influence though, or access. Fittingly, this man was once the Santa for that annual entertainment-linked LA holiday parade.

It happened at a party hosted by the man and his wife. The adults were all out by the pool, wasted and joking, and the kids were indoors playing video games, and watching "Jaws" on the big screen tv. When the man came to get me - I was with the boys at the game console - I thought I had done something wrong. But he assured me it would be okay and held my hand as we went upstairs. I was taken into the master bedroom where I was told that you were supposed to shower after swimming and had I done that? I shook my head no. The man, who reeked of liquor, and also smelled like skunk (something I didn't understand at the time), took off my swim trunks, and his. After showing me a nudist magazine from the 70s (or so I surmised, from the hairstyles), he pulled me into the shower with him. And if there's anything we learned from that Division I school scandal a few years back, it's that there's probably no good reason for a grown man to be showering with a young boy.

(Earlier, at one of these parties, I had fallen into the pool and nearly drowned - it was before I could swim. All the adults were either drunk or high, or otherwise not paying attention to the kids in their midst. I basically had to save myself.)

Gifts and opportunities followed, mostly access (back stage passes to network shows and events, that kind of thing), and swag. The man, along I guess with other network people, also had a stake in a production company that produced medical/educational films and videos. My first role? The "drowning boy" in a film about pool safety. Of course, in it, the trouble is not negligent adults, but that I'm "mischievous" and manage to get into the pool area despite being told not to. Over multiple takes, I had to fall into the pool, only to be pulled out by my "dad," and "resuscitated." (One thing you learn, apart from that adults may have sinister intentions, is that wet clothes weigh a lot. A few more takes and I may have actually been the drowning boy.) Next, naturally, I played "abused boy," and had to share my story of being inappropriately touched by my swim coach (I'm an aspiring youth competitive swimmer in this one) to the hospital shrink after acting out at school and at home. These were followed by medical/educational "stardom." I got to play "tonsillectomy boy" and later "appendectomy boy." As it happened, my own medical emergency coincided with the filming of the former, and the shot of me being put under - the look of fear in my eyes - was really a shot of me being put under. (Apparently this was not considered unethical back in the day.) So, I don't know, a nod (or at least on the list) maybe for best performance in a medical/educational film?
As with many other kids to whom stuff happened, there did come to be acting out. I was telling the truth in the last email that at the time of the events described I had never used drugs, and had maybe only had a baby sip or two of my dad's wine. I did get help, eventually, too, as I suggested, but it was not right away. It started with pot, of course, provided by a now industry union man and habitual social media virtue signaler (who also happens to be a serial philanderer and harasser of women, and who not to be outdone once exposed himself to me - I mention all this not because he's known but sometimes these are the kind of people who turn previously clean but vulnerable kids onto drugs). Acid and other hallucinogens followed, provided first by a classmate and son of a certain left coast dairy/ice cream fortune heiress. You should've seen the high school graduation party at the family pad in that beach town - straight out of a Bret Easton Ellis novel (yes Virginia they really do have a police department in Malibu), although he went to another school of the same type (we used to play them at sports) in the same topographical feature. The son is now a trustee of the school. (Analogously, I attended the same type of college as BEE but in a different state. He mentions the college unflatteringly in one of his novels - the friend goes there. A movie was made of it not starring the super hero actor.) Next came coke, speed, benzos, and more unusually heroin (I never liked the throwing up). It took an overdose of some very sketchy SF meth, and an intervention by the attending ER doc and male nurse (this all took place in the Bay Area) before I got clean. The worst part was having to tell my father - something you'll hear a lot from addicts (a friend of mine said the same thing when he was about to do his first stint in rehab). To this day, I suffer from chronic insomnia resulting from the drug abuse, and o/d. (If there was anything I was good at in childhood, it was sleep.)

What was the other way I acted out? What is that line of work that 3/4 of teens (my shrink told me this) doing it were sexually abused as children? Yes, that, and on the San Francisco street that is or at least was associated with the sex-specific version of it. (I had run off to SF after a romance, my first, ended badly, and some of these issues were coming up; I was nineteen.) I have haunting memories of it all, from the "nice" middle aged man in the sweater vest - a doppelganger for my abuser - who tried to kidnap me, to the boy - no older than 14 and clearly out of his mind on meth - playing chicken with oncoming cars on a bmx bike. I was probably fortunate not to end up HIV+ (or with some other STI), in jail, or dead.

So, all that. And: the itinerant backers of the feature project I mentioned, including a French born billionaire/head of a vc firm, want a proof of concept short for it. The flick, whose working title is "the Man from Mars," is slated to be shot later this year, and is a variation of some of the feature material. It's about a kid actor hired to do a tv docudrama for one of those pulpy but still feel good networks about boy hustlers in San Francisco. (In this sense, it's kind of a "reboot" of those 70s tv movies of the week, with the transitioning dad or girl turned streetwalker.) His character is picked up by a well meaning undercover cop who gives him a choice: the hospital/rehab or jail. The boy gets the help he needs, and the cop becomes his foster father. Only, late into shooting, the actor finds out about an additional scene - one not to be included in the airing. The cop, in this secret version, becomes a predator, and he becomes his kept boy. Fearing his imminent assault, the boy flees the set, only to find himself hitchhiking home on a street where young male hitchhikers aren't really doing that. His part becomes his life.

  7. For what it's worth, I believe he's saying he hustled on Polk Street in SF, I'm unclear on when. It was notorious for kid hustlers in the 1970s and 1980s. There was a documentary made about it - I can't remember the name.

I'm not expert in child trauma & psychology, but I wonder if this past abuse is why he had the gumption to run away from set on that fateful day?

  11. Someone posted a description in another blind without giving a name and I searched and found who he/she was talking about. I’m pretty sure she was right, it all fit. His sister is co founder of a film festival. His father was a minister then became an exec for CBS. A picture that is posted to his Facebook looks very much like Shroeder in the champ. I just wonder if he used a stage name because he is not credited for anything anywhere in acting under his real name. I want to say his name here but I’m afraid to piss anyone off... as far as abusers go, I haven’t figured that out yet.

  17. Anyway, this creepy Santa guy and the abusers from the original blind aren't said to be connected, but I bet they were, just DB didn't realize it. He was being groomed the whole time.

Also, isn't it odd?? Seems like this is not the first (or second) time an abused child actor was in a film/ show about abused children? I feel like we've seen this in kids from other blinds. Is it some weird grooming trick? I can't even imagine the psychology involved in that. These fuckers are devious.

  19. The ice cream family is the Robbins of Baskin-Robbins. John Robbins is an author/healthy eating guy (didn't want to work at BR). His son, Ocean, was born in 1973. John left the country but returned to California in 1984 so Ocean could attend school (setting a time frame for the blind). In 1986, at 16 years old, Ocean started Youth for Environmental Sanity (YES). River Phoenix family was among the first major financial supporters of YES (associating Ocean with known teen actors at the time-meaning possibly same circle, not anything bad. just adding a smaller timeline to the blind and additional names to help.

I'm also sad after searching "drowning boy" instructional videos and only getting real videos of drowning boys, which is why I went the ice cream route.

The Ocean and River connection also led to Joaquin working with YES (the water names connection is a cool coincidence)

And please note the drug abuse issues resulting from being sexually abused as a child. I wonder about Selena and Justin and what they both may have endured.

  28. It appears that in the 70's a nd 80's, the predators were literally getting away with seducing young boys. I personally know of a young man who was groomed by priest. I always thought it was strange that this priest was lurking around the high school dances. I asked my BF and he said oh he's cool. That man gave me the creeps and now I know he was keeping an eye on the beautiful blonde teen that was a year younger than I. I always gave that man the side eye and looking back, somebody should have said something. They both died of HIV allegedly. I'll never forget the victim.

Ah yes, The thrown away Twinks on lower Polk back in the '80's. Between O'Farrell and Turk. Some of the saddest sights I've ever seen. Usually raped by some much older guy in Castro as an underage teenage runaway and once they stopped looking "kiddie" they were thrown on the streets. By this stage usually junkies.

The Twink scene was a really big thing in the Castro back then. The raped boys were always slight and pretty. It was Harvey Milks specialty. He really liked his very young runaways boys. That scene ended during the Great Dying of the earlier '90's. You no longer saw all those much older guys with some very looking boy in tow at Castro and 18'th. As for all the young guys trying to sell themselves on Polk in the 1980s', almost all long dead. You stopped seeing them around '93/'94.

As for Harvey Milk. His name is a great litmus test for telling if someone is a true San Franciscan. All true native San Franciscan know their history and know that Milk and Moscone were shot a few weeks after the Jonestown Massacre. That Milk was Jim Jones guy on the Board of Supes. That Jim Jones supporters voter fraud got Moscone elected mayor, who returned the favor by making Jim Jones head of the Housing Dept. And that Milk and Moscone, especially Milk, helped Jones loot the city Housing Dept to help finance Jonestown.

Thats why Dan White was found not guilty of murder by the jury. Most right thinking people at the time thought Dan White had done the City a real service. Especially by killing Milk. Who was little more than Jim Jones gofer. The real tragedy was that it broke White and he killed him self soon afterwards. A genuinely good guy totally out of his depth. He was always just a fireman at heart.

As long as politicians like Willie Brown are still around there will be no proper memorial to those 900 plus poor people murdered in Guyana. Brown was way to close to Jim Jones for far too long. And too many of the "progressive" politicians still around today in SF have blood on their hands. Real blood. Lots of it.

Remember that the next time you hear them pontificating about the ills of the world. And why the victims are so wary of trying to seek justice.

    ReplyDelete

    1. @MusicDSPGuy, thanks for that. I knew a bit about the Jim Jones connection when I saw the movie "Milk", and of course knew that it was the usual whitewash.

    4. I'm not from SF, (actually never been there), but knew this story from my time(& my families) working in politics, back in the day. I've tried to tell this story to so many ppl who just get infuriated and claim it's not true, they never heard any of this, blah, blah, blah.
The craziest part? It WAS talked about, different parts reported and written into books, all during that time period. However, the media collectively agreed to sweep the most salacious details & the connections to other powerful ppl, right under the rug.
It reminds me of the early Clintons/Arkansas/White Water/TravelGate scandals that should have put them, and a lot of other powerful ppl, in prison, 10Xs over.
All either hidden or greatly minimized, or outright excused.
And, they continue to this day. Same as the ppl in SF.

He also worked with young teen actors including River Phoenix, Ethan Hawk, and worked with Corey Feldman more than once. I’m just working off genre directors and a timeline, so I could be completely wrong and Joe Dante could be a great guy.

It was only recently that I discovered that the term "Twink" had been sanitized. Back in '80's in SF it was a given that they were underaged. Thats why the older guys raped them. For exactly the same reason older musicians groom / rape underage girls. Not talking groupies stuff, I'm talking Jerry Garcia style grooming of girls and longer / long term relationships. Until they get too old / independent. Those of you who have been familiar with particular scenes in the Bay Area and who are not idiot fans will know exactly what I'm talking about. Its done in plain sight.

I only discovered the term Twink had been sanitized when someone posted on The Stranger a comment about a story about the Mayor of Seattle Ed Murray's multiple vulnerable teenage boy abuses scandals. The poster described the Twink scene Murray was involved with back in the 1980's, the poster had been one of those abused (not by Murray, but knew some who had), and had to explain it had nothing to do with the abused party looking very young. They actually were very young.

Of course in one of those twists of fate absolutely soaked in black humor, who do you think the city of SF renamed the grade school in the Castro in honor of? Yes, you've guessed it - Harvey Milk.

  60. I think it is all that same person writing, but just for different purposes. (The timing of both is, of course, predicated by the recent shift in public awareness)

First, he is looking for justice for recent workplace discrimination. He named names to solicit others who may have supporting evidence for the same type of illegal discrimination. What will at first be a journalistic endeavor can (perhaps) become a class action lawsuit. I think he makes his motivations clear.

Second, he is wanting to share the story and subsequent damage of his childhood abuse in an 'inspired by' artistic way through film. He likely has little to no legal recourse here and naming names will only bring him legal trouble.
So he writes anonymously on popular gossip site as he works toward getting outside help to create and produce it. This is raising his profile in a way that also protects him.

From 'french born' billionaire VC it's pretty clear that he will be submitting his project to First Look Media:
    https://firstlook.media/about

FLM is funded by the 'french born' founder of ebay. They co-produced 'Spotlight'.

I'm unclear at how the initial blind that described taxicab confession, with 3 boys murdered and a priest satanic thing going on, weaves into this. The plot seems to be incoherent so far. Maybe there is more than one? Maybe this is type of help he needs?

  61. @MusicDspGuy - I never realized the connection between Moscone and Jones was so strong. As someone born and raised in the Bay Area, I knew Jones was the darling of the political scene for quite awhile. I actually lived in SF from about '83 to '95. I was in college/grad school, so I wasn't overly focused on politics. It seemed by that time HIV/AIDS was the all-consuming topic.

That is just terrible. I remember when Jonestown happened and the body count kept rising, hour by hour.

You sound really familiar with the Bay Area. Another crazy cult everyone forgets about: Synanon. Remember that one??

And, sorry to Dancing Boy for everything he's been through.

It is entirely possible this is a ruse but the hopeful part of me would like to think no one would make up stuff this awful. It is bad enough that this crap actually happens but if it is BS then...well it is a gossip site that publishes fiction per Enty's disclaimer.

But that would actually be the better outcome - that none of this happened - so maybe it’s wishful thinking.
I feel like this is, again, free market research without having to may for a focus group.
So whoever’s writing this can say “look how many comments I got” when they present the screenplay.

I have a tip for all of you, if you see something outrageous someone has posted on social media or are reading something like a Craigslist or blog post that may just disappear or be edited-save it immediately.
Especially w/soc media posts. Don't waste time thinking up an outraged or upset response, screen shot it FIRST.
If it's particularly funny or outrageous, again, post it to imgur.com for others to see & share, as well.

  75. Long time reader...first time commenter...and I hope I didn’t post this twice by accident...
But the statement that DB knew the nudist magazine was from the 70s because “of the hairstyles” sounds so phony to me.
So we are supppsed to believe that a young boy in the 80s would stop to think, “hey those hairstyles look about 10 years outdated to me”, while being abused? I don’t buy it. I think that overly specific detail reveals the phoniness of the blind. It’s an odd detail and just doesn’t ring true. And I don’t think abuse victims would make their own horrific real-life story...sound like an entertaining, whirlwind movie plot. It’s one or the other...and my vote is that this is simply a “movie plot”.

I don’t know one way or another about DB’s debated veracity, but I can confirm that if you were a kid in the 80s born mid-70s, you tended to REALLY notice the difference between the looks at first glance.

I assumed he put the detail in because how else would you figure when a nudist was photographed? I do know nudist magazines and books had a real heyday in the late 60s and early 70s with a distinct style to them.

I remember the first time I saw a nudie mag as a kid, and oddly enough, the first thing I noticed was that everyone had hairstyles, and what clothing that had on, that were out dated.

That said, who knows if any of the DB story is a factual story, one way or another. Could be all, some, a blending of a couple of ppl's experiences, or all just complete bunk.

  82. Gay activists have done a very good job of hiding a lot of the darkness, dysfunction, exploitation and downright general abuses of the gay scene from the normies to the point that mainstream people generally actually believe that guys who obsessively persue 'twinks' are just harmless dudes who like legal age guys who just 'look' like underage, easily exploited pieces of meat. The same people who would look askance and condemn at any older adult man who strictly requires his female partners to always look underage, undeveloped and innocent as a newborn lamb and discards them as they 'age out'. Right. OK. Buy that if you will.

The old term for all this is 'pederasty' - man-boy 'love'. It has never not been there and has never gone away. The term should be re-introduced. 'Twinks' is a cutesy, in-group smokescreen for adult gay men who are so developmentally arrested and so predatory and fixated on power that only a male not fully developed is enough to turn them on.

Even if they check IDs, like Singer allegedly did at his US parties, RUN from guys like this. They WILL go lower if the legal threat isn't there, and often travel to do so.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Gay activists haven’t “hidden” anything. Let me ask you this: how do you think all those young gay boys ended up on the street in the first place?

Typically either running away from an abusive home life (made worse by parents trying to “straighten” or “save” them) or thrown out by parents who weren’t going to have a “dirty queer” under their roofs.

Yes, the gay scene was especially troubled in the 70s and that continues to echo today, but you can’t treat kids, teens, and adults the way so many LGBT people were treated until VERY recently (and in some places still are) without expecting considerable dysfunction to result.

That said, run from ANYone who sets off your Creep-o-meter, and never feel obligated to take on another person’s dysfunction. The guys you’re referring to in that last paragraph come from all sexualities and walks of life.

      Delete
    2. Keep telling yourself that. I volunteered in abuse shelters for 3 decades. It wasn't the Hollywood trope of, "evil parents try to force their dirty queer kid straight," that was flooding streets and shelters.
It was adults fucking the kids in the ass, that did it.
I remember 4 teens, 2 boys and 2 girls, that had such rigid parents that they wouldn't accept them back home, whatever the situation. That was in 3 decades.
I dealt w/ dozens upon dozens of raped and molested kids, almost entirely committed by a family member, a neighbor, a teacher, family friend, etc. I can only remember a very small handful who were molested by complete strangers.
And yes, the gay community did an awful lot of hiding, covering for, excusing, and sanitizing of pederasty to prevent normie attention or condemnation. What's worse, there are many, many, many still doing it, to this day. Normies don't know about glory holes & twinks & chickenheads. They don't know about poppers & rimming & grooming & auto-erotic asphyxiation. They don't know what DP, or bug chasing or PREP means.
They don't understand that "gay married," doesn't have the same kinds of restrictions and expectations that hetero marriages do.
They can't fathom the idea that both partners could be sleeping w/30-50 different people, EACH, in only a month, and it's just understood.
They have no clue just how many gay men sleep w/underage or very under age boys.
So, no. The average non-urban city dweller, (and even a portion of ppl in cities),the normie suburbanite or small town person, has no clue that there are quite a number of famous/infamous celebrities, religious leaders, activists, politicians, world leaders, professors, pundits, etc., that are pure degenerate human garbage, yet they have been propped up by media & entertainment, big corporations, foundations, and governments and sold to them as the people that are icons, heroes, thought leaders & authority figures that they AND their children should admire & emulate.
All the while knowing that they were covering for a Jerry Sandusky, a Brian Singer, a Larry Craig, a Victor Salva, a Denny Hastert, an Allen Ginsberg, a Gary Goddard, a William S Burroughs, a Harvey Milk, a Jimmy Saville, and so on...

  84. @Catsup, As someone who grew up in the Bay Area I saw that documentary you were talking about. One of the main kids they followed on that doc was a kid who was in my boy scout troop. I became friends with him for awhile but had a falling out when he broke into my house to steal some of my weed in high school. I remember that he had a really strict Dad and later on I heard he had run away. A few years later (1 or 2 maybe) the documentary came out. After the doc came out he became a minor celebrity in the Bay Area. Ran into him at a party one night and we all took the party to a condo complex that was under construction and partially vacant. He and some friends were squatting in an unfinished condo. Even though he had been outed from the documentary as a gay for pay street hustler he was a total ladies man and banged two of the girls in a hot tub in front of us all that night. We realized why he was so popular when we witnessed the incredibly long strokes he could take in banging these girls. He had a huge anaconda. That was the last time I saw him and less than a year later he ended up in the news because he committed suicide by hanging himself in his parents front yard tree. Apparently left a really nasty suicide note. Now it is totally obvious to me that his Dad was probably molesting him. So sad!

  85. @Catsup

If you lived in SF '83 to '95 you will know the city I'm describing. I'm not native but grew up in a totally dysfunctional country built on lies that have killed thousands over the years so have a very very sensitive bullshit meter. Which was off the scale the moment I arrived in SF. I've mostly lived out in the Avenues, back then still full of ordinary working class natives San Franciscans, so my introduction to SF politics was very different from those who huddled in the "progressive" ghettos like the Upper Haight or Bernal Heights.

The cover up by the media in the decades since of what happened back then has been almost complete. A total lack of interest in disturbing the narrative. Apart from a few chapters in Dave Talbots book Seasons of the Witch I dont think I've seen anything close to the true story of what happened then in print. And he only wrote those chapters because he actually was an old style local journalist back then. He had covered the stories. Not a J school drone.

Funny you should mention Aids being a big deal at the time. I remember the huge white wash by ActUP and their ilk at the time. You probably did hear not story about how the SF health inspectors had spotted very early the first signs of the epidemic and that the gay bath houses were the primary infection source. The inspectors tried to have the bath houses closed down as public health measure but the gay activists kicked up a huge row because they did not want their non stop party being ruined. So City Hall overruled the health inspectors and the bath houses stayed up a few more years until people starting dying in large numbers. By which stage it was too late. By the time the Great Dying was over several thousand were dead, almost all killed by the actions of the people behind ActUp.

Other interesting fact that was well known at the time in SF but seems to have "lost". To get infected back then a druggie / junkie shooting up had to share a needle with at least 5 to 10 other I.V users to stand a high probability of getting infected. The numbers for gay men was unprotected sex with at least 60 and usually closer to 100 different partners before they stood a high probability of getting infected. Which given the meat-market the Castro has always been, was not that unusual. So heterosexual infection with HTLV IV was always pretty much a non story. Unless exposed to medical blood products.

Yeah, I remember the Synanon guys. Lots of crazy cult stories. But oddly enough all the nastiest stories I've heard over the years involve very non cultish "main stream" organizations and politicians.

My favorite crazy SF story is still from my barber of many years. He reckons he once gave a haircuit to the Zodiac Killer. The day of the ill fated meetup with Melvin Belli in Daly City. My barbers first shop was just up the street from the arranged meeting spot in DC and the guy in question ducked into his barbers shop while all the commotion was outside. Made a quiet exit out the back door afterwards. Even though my barber is an ex marine, highly decorated, serious combat duty in Vietnam, from the get go he decided the guy wanting the haircut was not to be messed with.

  86. I gave some detail about the SF scene just to give people some idea of what poor guys like Dancing Boy are up against. The conspiracies he is up against are not the usual conspiracy theory stuff. Which are all junk. Its much more straight forward and insidious. Politics, media and business is a very incestuous world. With all three having their own particular scandals. And a scandal in one area is almost always going to leak over into the other two. Its rarely about money, even less about the threat of the criminal justice system, and almost all about power and protecting the power of the various institutions. The money is just how they keep score. The power is everything.

So with Dancing Boy given his very typical story even though it sounds like a typical media industry scandal story given the SF in the 1980's connection you can be 100% certain that there are a bunch of very powerful politicians not directly involved back then who would want this story buried. And not because of strings pulled / favors returned by the media industry people.

Having dealt directly over the decades with the aftermath of multiple very serious abuse / domestic violence situations of people who I care about the best outcome for the victim of the Dancing Boy story is the exposure and suicide of the principal perps. In these situations the welfare of the victim is paramount and the prosecution and jailing of the perps is often worse for the victim than just silence. But the exposure and then suicide of the perps. That is real closure for the victims.

If you have ever had to deal with these truly evil people and the lives they devastate and destroy you would toast their deaths with a bottle of champagne. I have. Good riddance.

  87. @music - I absolutely remember The City's refusal to shut down the bathhouses. It was outrageous and tragic.

The thing with Synanon - like Jim Jones it was sponsored by the government. In its nascent years it was a rehab for alcoholism and drug abuse. They had no formal training in this area and yet received millions from the State of California to cure all these people. It was quite chic in its early days, occupying a beach front building in Santa Monica, which I now believe is the Casa something hotel.

In its later years, when it moved to Marin County, it became a place troubled kids were sent to get straightened out. Again, they were paid millions by the State and they had absolutely no training or government oversight in this area. And, the treatment? Basically, beat the shit out the kids, starve them, and work them to death. The abuse was rampant. They finally got shut down when they tried to murder local journalists and a lawyer trying to expose them.

And, I remember Willie Brown well. Driving a Rolls, wearing Brioni suits, having a baby with his mistress, all on a $50K per year salary...hmm.

  90. @Halloweenie We are not talking about normal people here, we're talking about very wealthy ones. VCRs came out in the 70s (even VHS by 1977), were widely in homes by the mid 80s. By the 1985 even we had one...and we were just above the level needed for food stamps.

And Jaws came out in 1975. Release on Laserdisc by 1978, and VHS by 1980.

So this could have happened no earlier than 1978.

I'm going to guess that the "large screen TV" was a Sony Videoscope. That still puts us at 1980, when both technologies were pretty uncommon (read: expensive) and pretty new. Especially with the person caring enough about either item to have them be of note in this memory.

  91. I guess my overarching question is: what is to be done? Larry Nassar is where he belongs for the crimes he's committed. He is not famous, he's wealthy but not rich. Cosby had many women come forward to say that they were drugged and raped. He is not in jail. Because he's rich and famous. So the rich and famous and powerful can abuse indiscriminately with no fear ???? Because we (society) bestow some kind of godlike aura onto these people? If Weinstein were a regular working stuff like the rest of us would he be in jail by now? Instead he's at a luxury resort style "rehab" waiting for this to all die down. Mark Salling's case is being dropped now that he committed suicide/was murdered(?) . What about the 50,000 images of little babies under five? What happens for them? Are they to become the next generation of heroin addicts disgarded by society? Hookers on Craigslist? Mothers who can't nurture. Fathers who can't bond. And worst case scenario, abusers themselves. I feel like knowing all this and being able to do nothing is heartbreaking. I've most definitely stepped up my vigilance with my own two kids but knowing all this makes the powerlessness feel overwhelming at times. :(

  98. @Catsup

I remember just how crazy the Bay Area was back then. The vibe in SF when I first got there in the mid 80's was completely shell shocked. Still reeling after what it had been through. Like a dulled version of LA just after the riots in '91. Just add troops on the street and it could have Belfast at the time or the Balkans in the 1990's. It was only after Three Strikes in the 90's cleared out all the street criminals that it started to return to any kind of normalcy.

By the time I got up to speed on Marin gossip in the late '80's the Synanon escapades in the west / north county were ancient history. A friend who was an expert on all things cult regaled me with lots of stories which put the Synanon guys in the shade. As for the state money support as this stuff. You should see where some of the $40M audit free money that SF gives out ever year goes. Think the Black Muslim Bakery in Oakland sort of people. Plus there is the whole $300M p.a plus Homeless Industry scam in the City. 35K per "Homeless person" and 75% of these people have zero connection with the city. Mostly Prop 47/57 petty criminals. Spent several billion over the last few decades and the number remains the same as it was three decades ago. Because they are street people not homeless. So mostly solved with a law enforcement / criminal justice solution.

The Willie Brown story is the more interesting one. He has run the City since he was termed out of Sac in the 90's. Run the City as in a Mayor Schmitz way. Just like 100 years ago. He has, one way or another, a cut of every deal done. And the City budget. The Port of SF annual budget has some very interesting cash flows. Pay his law firm firm a big enough "retainer" and stuff happens. And as his people still run and control the mayors office staff it will remain that way until he dies, retires, or goes to jail.

So thats why SF is such a great place for perps to operate or hide away. Its a lot more predicable environment than the Southlands for these people. Too many competing jurisdictions in the LA area. LA city and county may be complete pay to play P.R.I style politics but some of the other cities are not so easy to pay off. Which is usually as simple as hiring the right law firm with the right political connections for a very high retainer and very high hourly rates. You never have to stuff envelopes with large denomination bills. Its much more sophisticated than that.

But in SF, its a lot simpler. A lot less complicated. Willie Browns people are the one stop shop for any problems that need to be buried. But it will be expensive. Very expensive.

  101. @totaji

For the 1960's/1970's stuff in SF the only book that gives any real idea of what went on is Season of the Witch by David Talbot. Still very sanitized and spends far too much time on repeating the music scene mythology bullshit. Most of the music scene "story" is pure media invention. Pretty much everyone involved was either nasty, malicious, fucked up or talentess. Of the lot only Paul Kantner came out of that scene with a good, and well deserved, reputation as a good musician and a really good guy. Then you had total monster like Bill Graham or lesser ones like Garcia. A real cesspit.

The Talbot book does at least cover all the main stuff. Like Jim Jones and the politicians. Moscone. Milk. And the racist murderers behind the Zebra killings. Mostly executions. Former mayor Art Agnos, the last good one, was almost one of the gangs white victims.

Thats an interesting tale in itself. You'd never guess from reading the media that there have been several dozen racially motivated murders in the Bay Area over the last few decades. Including the at least 15 whites killed by the Zebra gang. Since then pretty much all random murders of whites/ asians / hispanics by blacks were racially motivated. The local Chinese press tends to be less evasive on the subject. Read the media coverage of the recent unproved murder of a very slight 74 old, a beloved artist, while standing at a bus stop in the middle of the day on Market St by a very physically big thug, a career criminal, and try to guess the murderers background and motivation for killing the old man.

If you know how the media works, and to read between the lines, and know what awkward questions to ask, and how to fish for information, its pretty straightforward to work out whats going on. Most of this stuff has been covered one way or another over the decades . Its just a matter of paying attention over extended periods of time. And knowing your history. And human nature.

  102. @PapayaSF

When I first heard about the appointment of Jim Jones by Moscone to head up the Housing Authority that was the eureka moment for me. The Authority has been notorious for many decades for being utterly dysfunctional and a warren of financial frauds and embezzlement. Talking to old timers it seems like the Housing Authority was just normally big city dysfunctional until around the time of Mayor Christopher and the rot really started under Mayor Shelly and especially under Mayor Alioto. Thats when the really big Federal housing funds started rolling in.

So if you were a complete crook and fraud like Jim Jones by the mid 1970's there was only one part of the SF City government were you get you hands on very large amounts of money quickly with little or no real financial checks or audit trail - the SF Housing Authority. I'm absolutely sure that if Jones thought he could quickly loot the Port Authority he would have picked that as his payoff for stealing the election for Moscone. But there Jones would have been dealing with the real hard core operators defending their very lucrative turf. To this day the Port Authority is still a law unto itself.

It would be interesting to find out just how much money was funneled from the City coffers into Jones personal a/c's but given the nature of the cover-up and clean out after Dianne Feinstein took over as Mayor, and I fully understand her lack of curiosity at the time, it was the only politically expedient thing to do, I suspect we will never know.

And non-prosecutions. I'd put her in the same league as Gavin Newsom. A pure sock puppet of the Brown organization. A complete nonentity. A nothing. But at least she is not severely dyslexic like Newsom, which means she can actually comprehend all those complex documents placed in front of her to sign.

I think a great definition of being conflicted was the recent Senate election. Harris is little more than a Brown flunkie. A gofer. But the other candidate, Loretta Sanchez, is an even bigger sleaze and fraud. Her initial election to the House in 1996 was actually due to voter fraud. After multiple cases it was proved that over 1000 of her votes were fraudulent but her election was never set aside. A large part of the problem was the actual winner of the House seat election in 1996, Bob Dornan, was, well, Bob Dornan. "B-1 Bob". And his reputation for outlandish hyperbole was so well established by this time that everyone, including me, thought at the time it was just Bob being Bob when he claimed the election was stolen using illegal votes. It turned out Bob was right but in the end the state GOP party refused to back him the whole way. And that's how the state GOP lost California and it became a one party state. After 1996 the voter reg rolls in a lot of key districts developed a suspiciously Dem tenancy. With Motor Voter being the useful cover story. Of course untrue.

But that's politics. I prefer the good old day of state politics back in the 1930's and 1940's, the back room politics of people like Arthur Samish, when political graft and corruption was straight forward and with no hypocrisy. The book that Samish wrote, The Secret Boss of California, is a great read. Some great stories. Some very funny. One of the very few honest books on state politics ever written. Of course he went to prison once it became widely know he had all the politicians in his pocket. A thoroughly likable honest rogue.

  107. One of the best Samish stories would probably make a great screenplay. Even better for being true.

The gist of the story is that, way back when, one of Samish's LA area State Assembly members kept voting the wrong way in Sacramento on Bills that Samish's clients had paid Samish to get passed. In the end Samish decides to get rid of him. The guy was getting ideas of importance way above his station. To prove to the errant assembly member just how replaceable he was Samish and his business partner went into a downtown LA flophouse and picked the first half way presentable hobo as their new candidate for the district. The put the hobo in a good suite, tidied him up and gave him a shave, got him on the ballot, and he was promptly elected to the State Assembly. Machine politics being what it is.

When he got to Sac the new assembly member voted the right way on Samish's Bills but on other Bills and assembly work he fairly quickly turned out to be a very thoughtful and conscientious worker. Never forgetting where he had come from and never forgetting the people he had left behind. As long as Samish got his Bills passed he did not care how the new assembly member voted on other Bills. In fact I get the impression that Samish was secretly pleased that the guy selected at random from a flop house turned out to have such a good and useful political career. Always looking out for the little guy.

The problem with fiction is that shows so little creativity and imagination when compared with real life. Real life stories are always far more far outlandish and as a result far interesting.

I have done a lot of reading about Jim Jones and I can validate everything you have said. I live in SF and feel that the City never really came to terms with how he came to power here and have seen other cases that make me feel history could repeat itself. It gives me some hope that Jackie Speier is now in Congress. Harvey Milk was one of JJ's main backers and it makes me uneasy how that has all been glossed over.
Just watched Boys for Sale, thank you for the reference. Still very relevant. The Polk street twink scene is still alive, not sure if it is as populated as it used to be as online activity has taken much of it off the street corners. I have heard older gay men refer to Polk, so now I get where that is coming from. Runaway kids still head to SF, if you leave your car unlocked at night, you may come back to find a homeless teen sleeping in the back seat.

  109. One other thing, don't forget that Jim Jones got his start getting State funds to foster lots of children at his compound north of SF. It was a big business for him, and many of those former foster children became his enforcers who patrolled Jonestown to the end.

The current Polk scene is nothing like the old days. A pale shadow. A few years ago I was parked on lower Polk one night, killing time talking to a musician friend I was dropping off for a gig, and it struck me that I had been parked in almost exactly the same spot on this street exactly 28 years before. I remembered the date because it was the first time I had driven up from SoCal. With someone who subsequently had a very tragic history.

If you had been on those few blocks of Polk 30 years ago, pretty much any time day or night, you would have seen between half a dozen and a dozen young guys, teens / early twenties, street walking. Even on Christmas Day or Thanksgiving there was at least a few guys there. Selling themselves. In all weathers. They were mostly throwaways from the twink scene of the time.

As I said before, some of the most heart-breaking scenes I have ever seen were on Polk st back then. Which given the utterly shameful way mentally ill people are treated in California, allowed to die on the streets due to "patients rights" laws, allowing them to refuse to take vital medication, it really is saying something.

The story of Harvey Milk and Jim Jones is far more damning than Milk just being a Jones supporter and facilitator. Early in the election cycle that elected Moscone mayor and Milk to the Board of Supes Jones original favored candidate for the Supervisor seat was Art Agnos. Who unlike Milk was a real politician with a track record and real neighborhood support. But Agnos wanted nothing to do with Jones and was his own man so Jones switched his support to Milk , who would be far easier to control once elected. Milk was the classic narcissistic sociopath, feed his vanity and he was easy to control. Not only did Jones throw his money and his "votes" behind Milk but went out of his way to sabotage the Agnos campaign. So Milk got elected and Agnos did not. And Milk literally was the Jim Jones organization guy in City Hall.

Later on Art Argos went on to be a great mayor, the last mayor who was a sleaze or a sock puppet, but was not reelected in 1992 because he refused to double the no-audit/no-questions asked money (actually kickbacks) given to all the various "progressive" groups and organizations in SF. So they told their people to not vote and Agnos lost the election. I think the money involved was about $12M at the time. Its now well over $60M. Per year. If Agnos had given these "progressive" groups the extra $12M demanded he would have been reelected.

Thats how "progressive" politics works in SF. Follow the money.

"Later on Art Argos went on to be a great mayor, the last mayor who was *not* a sleaze or a sock puppet,..."

Agnos is one of the good guys.

Agree. Another way Jim Jones got politicians in his pocket was by having his followers have sex with them. I read that young women were sent to Moscone for this purpose. JJ then had some dirt on the politician he could use as leverage.

  113. Agnos recently lost his home and everything in it to the Sonoma fires. I'm sure there was a lot of SF history in there that went up in flames. But the machine here in SF grinds on.

  114. One problem I have with Agnos is that a few years ago, he defended the Sheriff when it came out that the Sheriff was abusing his wife. Agnos had him staying at his house during the trial and conviction. I was shocked he went so far to cover for an abuser, even if they were political allies. The Sheriff lost the last election because of it. The Sheriff and his wife are still together, but I lost some respect for Agnos during that whole affair.

    1. You probably don't have much experience with domestic abuse, (which is a good thing!), but it's very rarely, almost never, a 1-sided problem.
People in domestic abuse relationships, long term, develop a symbiosis, a co-dependency, and the abuse goes both ways. This is why law enforcement and court systems have such difficulty, and poor success rates, at improving those situations.
I can easily see how someone closely involved with a dysfunctional couple could support the person that is being blamed for the abuse, (90+% of the time, the male is blamed, however, in dom abuse cases, females are MORE likely to be physically violent toward their partners, than males), if you knew the intimate details of their lives.
Just because the male in the relationship is tagged as the "abuser," you should keep in mind that men RARELY press charges, or seek help, in abusive relationships We have a culture where we (somewhat logically) place all blame on males because males are larger and stronger and potentially more dangerous. Men are also still seen as primary breadwinner and provider, while women are not expected to be able to fend for themselves, with or without children.
It becomes even trickier when dealing w/same sex couples. An interesting thing to note, if males are the more physically aggressive of the sexes, the abusers, why are the rates of abuse in queer male relationships dramatically lower than in queer female relationships?
In fact, lesbian domestic abuse rates, (rate, not total), are actually HIGHER than hetero dom abuse rates.
*This type of info is considered verboten & anti-feminist by the Progressive dogmatic cults that run social sciences, courts, law enforcement, media, education, activism, etc. because it's an honest portrayal, and doesn't fit the political and social agenda driven narrative that these entities wish to portray.
To the detriment of both men and women, and especially the real victims-children.
