There has been a lot of talk behind the scenes whether or not to change the way awards are presented at this big movie self congratulating event. Producers of the telecast are worried there will be some kind of demonstration or protest during one presentation in particular, especially because everyone will know its coming. The producers would not mind at all if that presenter just begged off or called in sick or something to make it go away.

ReplyDeleteIf the Academy is so worried, just pull the plug on an Affleck appearance. It's not written in stone that previous year's winner have to present. In the year after Cotillard, DDL, Bardem and Swinton won their Oscars, they had so-called A-Listers give them out because the Academy wanted ratings and they were worried that the actual winners wouldn't pull in the viewers.
Or is the Academy scared of offending an American, but okay with dissing the foreign born winners?
They need to get it together in more ways than one.
It's his right to present since he won last years best actor. Tradition...plus he hasn't been convicted of anything. Just rumours.

ReplyDeleteMan, if Brie Larson was the nominated frontrunner for Best Actress this year and won again, I cannot imagine that Casey would stand up there and present the award, even if the Academy didn't pull him.

ReplyDeleteIt isn't a "right" to present. If the Academy is serious about sexual harassment in the workplace, they would tell him to stay home. And if he had a modicum of decency he wouldn't need to be told. But, of course he doesn't.

The fact that he even got an award last year was an insult to all women everywhere. Funny how Hollywood had no qualms going after Nate Parker and yet turned a blind eye to Casey Affleck.

DeleteNate Parker was charged with rape. He was acquitted because he and his victim had had sex before. His friend that participated in the rape was found guilty. Affleck has been accused of sexual harrasment which is very different than rape. Go read the court transcript of what Parker said happened (but claimed it wasn't rape) and you get a different picture. There is no comparison between these two.

If he's smart (and I think he is), he'll keep a low profile until the dust has settled on this whole abuse scandal. And glad Affleck had enough sense to stay away from the Oscars. It is interesting how SOME PEOPLE making excuses for Affleck bad behaviour BECAUSE HE IS A WHITE MAN. And to top it off Armie Hammer was FORCED to apologize when he criticized Casey Affleck in the press.

ReplyDeleteHowever, innocent people pay ALL THE TIME. When someone makes an accusation or indicates their intention to sue you, you have to make a calculation.
There is a cost not only in legal fees but in reputation when something gets publicized in a trial. The larger the celebrity, the larger the lens on that trial and the larger that cost is, regardless of whether the accusations are true. So the question is whether the projected cost is greater than or less than the cost of paying them off.
In the case of Casey Affleck there's a scene in the actual movie which might have been completely staged or not and could function as evidence BOTH for plaintiff and defense. Even if he did nothing wrong, the outcome of any contested allegation there would be a toss up. Maybe worse because of his celebrity status.
Thus, even if he did nothing wrong, the optimal course for him was likely to pay the girls off.
I'm not saying he did or didn't do it. But I have to correct the record here on whether only guilty people pay. That's just false. Heck, in personal injury, most of the parties who do the paying (insurance companies) literally do not care at all what actually happened.
Do I think the system should be set up the way it is? No. Absolutely not.
Do I think Casey is guilty of at least harassment probably multiple times in his life. Of course. I mean come on.
But could he be innocent of the allegations and still have paid? Yes, actually.
White privilege doesn't exist. But keep beating that dead horse.
