In these days, people will spend a ton on publicity or get pregnant or married and get their wife pregnant to try and win an Academy Award. Back in the day though, this permanent A+ list mostly movie actress with A++ list name recognition convinced the voting members that she was in the hospital and barely clinging to life. She won. Remarkably she was fit and ready to accept the award and partied for 72 straight hours afterwards.

Joan Crawford
Nothing you print about Joan Crawford will ever shock me. She brought Diva to a new level of crazy, and I love her for that.
ReplyDeleteOne of the easiest blinds ever posted here. I mean, this was in Mommie Dearest.
ReplyDeleteNot to mention the mini-series that was on TV not to long ago.
DeleteSo she "Acted" to convince the Members to vote for her.
ReplyDeleteOkay, then she deserved it!
Ms. Crawford was the original Iron Maiden. Today, the top female actresses are merely cotton candy compared to her. Sharon Stone is the closest thing to Joan Crawford Hollywood will ever see. Sadly, Sharon Stone will not leave the film legacy Joan did.
ReplyDeletedidn't Elizabeth Taylor do the same thing, everyone thought she was on death's door and she won an Oscar. Turned out she was sick, but not as sick as she wanted or let everyone to believe.
ReplyDeleteShe did. I had to Google this because I was worried this may have been Audrey Hepburn (OF COURSE NOT) because I remember Audrey had issues like this anndfor some reason I thought she accepted an award from home? I'm a HUGE FAN so I was hoping it wasn't Audrey Hepburn and I checked and found this list: http://m.imdb.com/awards-central/oscar-winner-no-shows/ls033349525/?ref_=m_ls_mv_sm
DeleteNot surprised. She was a wild one.
ReplyDeleteThe irony of Mommie Dearest casting aside, I did agree with Joan when she said Faye Dunaway was the closest thing to an Old Hollywood star there was, at the time she said it.
ReplyDeleteNo. Elizabeth Taylor did not fake her illness. She needed a tracheotomy or she would have died.
ReplyDelete10/10
ReplyDeleteEveryone back then knew it was a ploy.
ReplyDeleteNot that it matters or takes away from Miss Crawford's legend, but this blind just doesn't make sense. So, she pretended to be sick for weeks and stayed at the hospital while everyone voted? She famously took to her bed at home the day of the ceremony making for an amazing PR-wet dream of a bedside photo op after she won but the voting happened a long time before that. Anyway, it doesn't matter. Anything that gets Joan Crawford on CDAN is fine with me.
ReplyDeleteI think part of it was that she wanted to save face if she lost so she didn't show up to the award ceremony. She just happened to be fully made up when the press arrived w/ her oscar.
DeleteI doff my cap to one of the great all-time broads.
ReplyDeleteIt was not unprecedented for Crawford to check herself into the hospital for "exhaustion." She did it a number of times, notably, I think, during the production of "Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte." which she was later fired from.
ReplyDeleteElizabeth Taylor got a sympathy Oscar too, for Butterfield 8. She was actually sick though.
ReplyDeleteWell there is diva and then there is crazy.
ReplyDeleteAlthough it's hard to bear one of them in real life, the feud miniseries was excellent.
ReplyDeleteShe is likely the only actor in Oscar history to have her Oscar home-delivered to her for acceptance. I hope she tipped well.
ReplyDeleteJoan Crawford was a crazy bitch from hell.
ReplyDeleteThe crazy just oozes from her eyes.
I am so sick of crazy Hollyweird people being immortalized as something special.
She was a master manipulator, that is all.
And she looked like a tranny.
Being a head case does not make one a 'diva' it makes you a head case. Stop getting it twisted.
Do Tell: You're right about Faye being one of the last great Hollywood actresses from the Old School. Faye and Sharon. Both incredibly talented and strong women. Look where it got them. They haven't had a big role for years. Decades, maybe. Show Biz men just cannot handle women with this kind of intelligence, talent and determination. Hope the women hosting The Golden Globes tonight step up and show 'em how it's done!!!
ReplyDeleteP. S. NOT A GOOD SIGN: Yesterday the N Y Post newspaper published stories from Hollywood claiming Ridley Scott was saying he wasn't ruling out a return of Harvey Weinstein and another story intimating some Hollywood big wigs were regretting blackballing Harvey so quickly.
ReplyDeleteThis is just what I was worried would happen.
Also, Louis C. K. was not found to have done anything criminal.
Expect to see all the men accused partying at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party this year! Just hope and pray the actresses who accused them don't end up on the permanent unemployment line. Why am I not surprised?!!!
Oh thank GOD you mentioned "RIDLEY Scott" because I was getting him mixed up with the guy who made "Young Adult" (his name is Jason Reitman) and I was starting to feel bad about liking that film. I'm such an idiot, i thought Buddy in "Young Adult" was played by the same guy without a character name in "Guardians of the Galaxy", WTF?
DeleteAnyway, I think Harvey Weinstein did WAYYYYY more than just assault women. He's ruined entire lives. He couldn't have been blackballed soon enough!
That's what I think at least. 🗽👩🏻🚕🍂💛
Anyone that watched the joan/betty mini series should have got this blind. Not a blind actually.
ReplyDeleteFaye Dunaway fantastic actress in Bonnie & Clyde too!!!
ReplyDeleteDid we not figure those accused would resurface? It's been that way since the sands of time in Hollyweird. Hollyweird might make amends to women for a short period of time for optics, but sooner or later, it'll be back to the casting couches and the Singers, etc. Nothing. Will. Change. It's just too rampant in our society.
Joan Crawford did a TON of anonymous charity work during her lifetime. She was also great with her fans...never refused to sign an autograph and EVERY fan letter was answered.
