A newly elected West Virginia sheriff who admitted he was a meth addict and was charged with stealing the drug from a police locker pleaded guilty to a felony and resigned from office Wednesday, a prosecutor said.
Bo Williams entered the plea to a charge of entering without breaking Wednesday in Roane County Circuit Court.
County Prosecutor Josh Downey said Williams was accused of taking methamphetamine from the storage area when he was a Spencer police officer last fall. He resigned in December, a month after being elected Roane County sheriff. He took office this month.
According to a criminal complaint, meth was found in Williams’ desk and police vehicle. The complaint said several evidence bags found with Williams contained case numbers corresponding to missing evidence.
Downey said Williams told him, Spencer Police Chief Greg Nichols and a state police sergeant last November that he had been addicted to meth for more than a year. Downey said Williams admitted removing methamphetamine from a police case file and consuming it.
Williams faces up to 10 years in prison when he’s sentenced on March 28.
“’It’s an example of what drugs like meth have done to our communities,” Downey said. “Some people have a picture of what a drug addict looks like. It shows that it can be anybody.”
The Roane County Commission, which had already started removal proceedings against Williams, will have a month to appoint a replacement. It plans to meet Friday.
The commission had appointed former Roane County Sheriff Todd Cole to serve as chief deputy in charge of law enforcement operations. Cole served two terms as sheriff from 2000 to 2008. In 2014 he was appointed to fill the unexpired term of the previous sheriff who left for health reasons. Cole’s term ended Dec. 31.
Williams was elected sheriff in November and his term started Jan. 1. While serving as a police officer in Spencer, Williams was placed on leave and he resigned in December after evidence went missing. The complaint said more than $1,000 in evidence was involved. He originally was charged with grand larceny.
Williams agreed to resign as part of a plea agreement with the prosecutor’s office in neighboring Wood County, which handled the court case. Downey said he’s “relieved more than anything” by the conviction because of the toll it was taking on a small central West Virginia community.
Miguel Ferrer, who starred in a featured role on "NCIS: Los Angeles" and, before that, to NBC crime drama "Crossing Jordan," has died.
CBS said Ferrer died Thursday of cancer at his Los Angeles home. He was 61.
He had played assistant director Owen Granger on "NCIS: Los Angeles" since 2012. Before that, he played the chief medical examiner and boss to series star Jill Hennessy for the six seasons of "Crossing Jordan."
A native of Santa Monica, Calif., Ferrer was the son of Academy Award-winning actor Jose Ferrer and singer-actress Rosemary Clooney, and a cousin of George Clooney, who issued a statement Thursday afternoon.
"Today, history will mark giant changes in our world," Clooney said, "and lost to most will be that on the same day Miguel Ferrer lost his battle to throat cancer but not lost to his family. Miguel made the world brighter and funnier and his passing is felt so deeply in our family that events of the day ... pale in comparison. We love you Miguel. We always will."
In his own statement, "NCIS: Los Angeles" showrunner R. Scott Gemmill called Ferrer "a man of tremendous talent who had a powerful dramatic presence onscreen, a wicked sense of humor and a huge heart."
Ferrer began his career in the early 1980s with guest shots on many TV series. In 1990 he scored a signature role as FBI Agent Albert Rosenfield on David Lynch's smash series "Twin Peaks." He reprised that character for the 1992 movie "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me." He will encore yet again as Agent Rosenfield for Showtime's "Twin Peaks" revival airing this spring.

People who knew the celebrity back in the day claim that the real love of his life was a beautiful girl who was from a different race. That marriage came to an end after it was revealed that he'd fathered yet another child with a different woman on the side. He apparently was never involved with that particular child and never saw them prior to his death. The official cause of this celebrity's death was given as one illness--but the rumor that has been floating around is that the real underlying cause of death was caused by something else.

A woman from Indiana was sentenced Tuesday to 20 years in prison in the death of one of her children who was beaten and set on fire two years ago.
Breanna Arnold, 22, had been charged with several different crimes, including neglect of a dependent, obstruction of justice, abuse of a corpse and dealing methamphetamine. All the charges were dropped except for one charge she pleaded guilty to: Preparing meth in a home occupied by children.
Arnold’s younger son, Owen Collins, 3, died in the mobile home that Arnold, boyfriend Zachary Barnes and a friend, Zachary Barker, occupied outside of Bluffton on Jan. 17, 2015. Arnold and Barnes wrapped Owen’s body in plastic and hid it in a dresser drawer before Barnes and Barker removed the body, tried to chop it up and later took it to a nearby woods and set it on fire.
Arnold initially told police she didn’t know what had happened to her child.
She had thought the child had died from eating meth. Later it was determined the toddler had died of blunt force trauma inflicted by Barnes, then 31, who had a history of violence and drug use. He pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 50 years for killing the boy.
Wells County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Christopher Harvey argued that Arnold knew what had happened to her child, but when police came to investigate after a family member expressed concern for the child’s safety, she wasn’t initially cooperative, refusing to tell police anything she knew for more than 12 hours.
Harvey said the body could have been found quickly if she had cooperated and told police the truth about where he child was. It was later determined she had nothing to do with the child’s death.
In a statement by Arnold, read to the court by her attorney, Nikos Nakos, she said that on the day that Owen Collins was killed, she was trying to keep herself and her other son, Travis, 6, alive and if she would have acted, they would have both ended up dead. She also acknowledged that her younger son had been denied a life because of her poor judgment.
Nakos called several character witnesses who described how Arnold had a very hard upbringing. Witnesses included teachers at an alternative school who watched her work hard toward her high school diploma while she was 15, pregnant and working. Witnesses described her as a good mother who tried hard but never had much of a chance.
A French official says a robber armed with a hand grenade and an automatic handgun has stolen diamond necklaces and other jewelry from a luxury store in the French Riviera city of Cannes.
Alain Guimbard, a deputy prosecutor in nearby Grasse, said Wednesday the robber entered the Harry Winston jewelry store on the seaside avenue La Croisette by pretending to be a customer.
Guimbard told The Associated Press the robber then forced employees to give him diamond jewelry from a display window and other pieces.
The holdup lasted only a few minutes. Guimbard says the robber escaped and no one was injured.
The stolen merchandise is estimated to be worth $16 million.

For a time the actress tried to convince her boyfriend he was the father, but that went out the window almost immediately. Two girls who were snatched from their Rhode Island home more than 30 years ago have been located some 1,800 miles away, police announced Tuesday. Their mother, who did not have custody of them, was arrested.
In a press conference, Rhode Island State Police and the Attorney General’s Office said they received an anonymous tip a few days before Christmas that led investigators to Houston, Texas where they found Elaine Yates, who allegedly abducted her two daughters Kelly and Kimberly in August 1985.
Lt. Col. Joseph Philbin said Yates, 69, had been living in Houston under the name Leina Waldberg.
She was taken into custody on Monday around 12:30 p.m. at her home in Houston and arraigned as a fugitive from justice, WPRI reported.
According to Philbin, Yates and her daughters – Kelly was 10 months old and Kimberly was three and a half at the time – disappeared from their home in Warwick, Rhode Island on August 26, 1985. The next day Yates’ husband, Russell Yates, filed a missing person’s report with the police.
Philbin said investigators at the time determined the mother-of-two was seeking a divorce from her husband. He added that Russel Yates had obtained a court order giving him custody of the missing children on Nov. 18, 1985 and had taken the complaint to state police.
Kelly, now 32, and Kimberly, now 35, were not living with their mother at the time of the arrest in Houston. They were also living under an alias.
Philbin would not reveal their current identities nor other specifics about the case, but said both women were surprised by their mother’s arrest.
The elder Yates waived extradition and is on her way back to Rhode Island, where she will be arraigned sometime Wednesday, Philbin said. Investigators used drivers’ license photos and Facebook to help crack the case.
Philbin said the two women were given their father’s contact information. Police said their father has been informed and is “relieved,” KHOU reported.
Cops say a grandfather stopped an attempted kidnapper from snatching his 3-year-old from a California park over the weekend.
The Auburn Police Department says the incident unfolded Saturday when a woman they identified as 28-year-old Lindsay Frasher approached a family and grabbed the little girl in a bear hug.
Frasher allegedly then "attempted to physically take the female child away," police said.
However, as the little girl's family watched in horror, the grandfather fought back in what Sgt. Gary Hopping called "a tug of war over the little girl."
Cops say the grandfather prevailed and members of the girl's family held Frasher at the scene while waiting for authorities to arrive.
Officials say Frasher didn't know little girl or her family.
Frasher was arrested on kidnapping charges and her bail was set at $200,000.
Her A list husband is always the one in danger of going back to rehab, but this A- list mostly movie actress who is an Academy Award winner is the one who needs it now.

This rock star is not from LA and had deep ties to his home town and lots and lots of friends in the music scene there. The girl he married also worked as his band's manager, and was instrumental in getting the band signed. She also worked with a number of other bands and helped them get signed and also kept them from getting completely screwed over by record companies. She was well respected on their home turf for protecting the musicians from there and also for being a pretty decent human being.
Anyway, early on, this band was very successful both critically and financially. Right before the band hit it big, the rock star and his wife had a child. This couple were so down to earth that they even remained living in the same small house they had purchased early in their relationship, and planned to raise their child in that environment, as to not lose touch with what was real. Of course, things didn't go as planned. The rock star started to enjoy his success and the stuff that came with it. He started to become rude, obnoxious and greedy. As is often the case, he changed. His band mates noticed the change and didn't like it either. This resulted in a lot of fighting in the band- and eventually the band broke up over this difference in values. There was no reason given for the breakup, but anyone who had been paying attention could see what was happening there. It was the classic story of the lead singer who gets a fat head, corrupted values and thinks they no longer need their band or the people who were with them in the lean times anymore. At the same time this happened, the marriage between the singer and his hardworking wife started to unravel. There was cheating and also the singer was away more and more and was not spending any time with the wife or their child.
The singer eventually met another woman from a family notorious for being greedy social climbers. People who knew this woman and her family from years ago say that her mother planned for years to marry her off to someone rich and famous and was "training" her from a young age with that goal in mind. (A version of PMK before her time.) The training apparently worked because once this woman had this singer in her cross hairs, she was determined to break up his family and was successful in doing so. No one close to the singer could figure out what he saw in her, though. She was rude, mean, and not very attractive. Her lack of personal charm also made her appear even uglier and friends around him had funny nicknames for her, one of which was 'troll'. This woman sealed the deal by getting pregnant very quickly so that a divorce would be initiated by the long suffering wife. While destroying this guy's marriage wasn't enough, the new girlfriend also convinced the singer that his estranged wife (who remember was also his manager) had cheated him and his band mates out of millions of dollars. He bought this hook line and sinker and not only was the divorce bitter but other litigation dragged on for years, and the accusations of financial mismanagement by the wife publicly smeared her reputation. The singer tried to drag his former band mates into the litigation fray as well-- even though they knew the estranged wife had not done anything deliberately wrong. The ex wife was dragged though court to the point where she was bordering on bankruptcy when things were finally settled. The new girlfriend was just hell bent on dragging the ex wife through the mud. Not long after things were settled legally, the singer and the girlfriend finally got married. One of the attendees of the marriage ceremony also saw the true colors of the bride and expressed concern about her and her family's shady vibe to people around the singer. Sadly, she died herself under mysterious circumstances later.
The singer's new wife gave birth to several children pretty quickly. She also became involved in management decisions for the singer's career and finances. Rumor has it that a series of poor decisions were made there including getting the singer to invest a large sum of money into a business run by her family. Bad idea. Meanwhile, the child with the first wife didn't see the singer very much, because the new wife made sure he was touring and involved in as many moneymaking projects as possible. The singer also showed off the "new" family publicly with no mention of the child back home. Fans noticed. When the former wife was forced to go to court about parenting related issues, the singer chose to litigate her more and even accused her again of stealing his belongings. The ex wife has stayed true to her roots and has not spoken out publicly against the singer, even though she's been bullied and smeared by him and his new wife for years. She is just trying to raise her child in peace. The irony in all this is that this singer also tries to fund raise for children's charities. The people around him laugh behind his back at the hypocrisy, considering the situation with the child from the first marriage. The best part in all this is that the current rumor is that he's met someone else and will be dumping his current wife soon. What is even funnier is that his current wife and her family are so financially shady that the singer has no idea how badly he's been ripped off. Yet. So its looking like karma is real and the wrongly accused former wife is going to be laughing her ass off when the details about the current wife and her family's financial shenanigans come to light. It will get ugly too. The current wife and her family will not go quietly and I would not be surprised if she exposes and blames the singer publicly for smearing and wrongly accusing his former wife.

The mother of a 12-year-old boy has been charged with murder after authorities found the preteen boy’s body in a Oregon apartment.
Keizer police and fire personnel arrived first and found the boy, identified as Caden Berry, dead inside the apartment.
The boy’s mother, identified as 38-year-old Amy M. Robertson, was also at the scene and cooperated with police when they arrived. She was taken into custody and remains cooperative, authorities said. She faces a charge of aggravated murder and was booked into the Marion County Correctional Facility on Sunday morning without bail.
Neighbors who spoke with media didn’t want to be fully identified, but said Berry was well-liked. They said they were immediately concerned when they heard Robertson yelling in the courtyard and he was nowhere to be seen.
“His mom just came out here yelling,” one neighbor said. She was reportedly swinging her arms around and said something about demons to another neighbor. Though it wasn’t immediately clear to them what was wrong, the teen was noticeably absent.
“I went out there and told her to calm down. She said, ‘OK,'” a neighbor told the media. “I said, ‘Where’s your son?’ She said, ‘In the house under the blanket.’ So I went into his room. He wasn’t in there.”
As she searched further, she found the boy in the living room.
“There was a recliner tipped over and he was halfway on it under a blanket,” she said. “I pulled the blanket back and I could tell he was gone.”
The neighbor said Berry wasn’t breathing and was cold. His head was laying on the arm of the up-turned recliner, covered with a blanket.
“I tried to wake him up, and he wouldn’t wake up. So I ran out and yelled to call an ambulance.”
When the neighbor did that, Robertson reportedly said, “I told you not to move the blanket.”
One of his young friends in the complex said there may have been warning signs earlier this week. “He just wasn’t acting right,” Berry’s friend told reporters.
“He was, like, always happy and he was never really, like, sad. Until yesterday. He looked really sad and he was, like, a really close friend.”
The wife of Orlando nightclub gunman Omar Mateen was arrested by the FBI on Monday in connection with the mass shooting and charged with obstruction and giving support to a terrorist organization, officials said.
Noor Salman was taken into custody in California, where her family lives, but the case is filed in Florida, where her husband massacred 49 people at the Pulse nightclub in June, swearing allegiance to ISIS.
Her attorney said she had no advance knowledge of what her husband was planning and should not have been charged.
"Noor has told her story of abuse at his hands," the lawyer, Linda Moreno, said in a statement. "We believe it is misguided and wrong to prosecute her and that it dishonors the memories of the victims to punish an innocent person."
Authorities said early on that they would file criminal charges against Salman — who was with her husband when he bought ammunition and exchanged texts with him in the middle of the attack — if it was shown that she knew what he was planning and did nothing.
The 30-year-old was being held at the Santa Rita Jail ahead of an appearance in federal court on Tuesday. Prosecutors will then seek to bring her back to Orlando to face the charges.
