New York, 1992: If you're a bright-eyed 18 year old gay college boy invited by your mid-twenties boyfriend to the birthday party (at a private midtown Manhattan club) of an aging counter-culture celebrity hero who popularized/invented/manufactured something still very much in use today hosted by a female member of the former Yugoslav Royal Family, you realize in retrospect that that was the case for three reasons: 1) pr, as in the kids of the new generation, just like the last, are hip to him 2) plausible deniability vis a vis the teen girls in attendance (related to #1 but also because if they're only one sex some people might raise eyebrows - also note the death of a 17 year old girl in his midst, a few decades earlier and 3) to be "available" for the older, powerful closeted gay men in attendance.
Jaysus, it'll take me an hour just to try to decipher this blind, if at all. Anyone do Enty "sum up" shorthand here?
ReplyDeleteTimothy Leary
ReplyDeleteAll I got is Catherine Oxenberg.
ReplyDeleteyes, timothy leary is who i thought of too. died in '96. 'turn on, tune in and drop out.'
ReplyDeleteCatherine Oxenburg for the Eurotrash royal. Mother was Princess Elizabeth of Yugoslavia
ReplyDeleteOK, now I get it.
ReplyDeleteCharlene Renee Almeida is the 17 yr old
ReplyDelete"A warrant for the arrest of Timothy Leary was out today after an autopsy showed that a 17-year-old girl w'ho drowned at his ranch was under the influence of LSD."
Hmmm Keanu Reeves is 43....I wonder?
ReplyDeleteKeanu Reeves is 53 and was already a successful actor. NPH is 44 so a better fit age-wise but never went to college so I'm stumped.
DeleteLeary was gay then?
ReplyDelete@yvie, I doubt it. Leary had 5 wives over the course of his lifetime.
ReplyDeleteit doesn't say the celebrity hero was gay.
ReplyDeleteno, it indicates there were lots of young girls there for the celebrity and they needed more boys as cover. this reminds me of the blind about wynona ryder having been abused. leary was her godfather, there are icky photos of the 2 of them together.
ReplyDeleteI was just about to link this to the Wynona blind but you beat me to it
DeleteSteve Jobs
ReplyDeleteWhere is @Trisha13!?!? We need you girrrl!
ReplyDelete@just sayin,I think it is the other way around. And why does having a bunch of wife's mean they aren't gay?
ReplyDeleteKeanu reeves is 43yrs old??
ReplyDeleteNPH for the college kid?
ReplyDeleteguesser - i don't see a reference to wives here, but no, having wives doesn't mean one's not gay, agreed! lol.
ReplyDeletei read it like this: the young man figured that there were 3 reasons why a nobody like himself was invited to such a glamorous party for the famous timothy leary (assuming it's him...allegedly):
1) the pr person who created the guest list wanted young people there to make leary look hip/in-touch-with/still admired by youth culture.
2) because he's male and they need a mix of the sexes for plausible deniability, should anyone accuse the partyplanner or guest of honor of only inviting one sex. he's male, so for him to be diluting the pool we have to assume it's the preponderance of girls that would look bad (considering a teen girl died at one of leary's events in the past).
3) because there are also older gay men at the party and he was unwittingly invited to be a party favor.
Leary was see eye a. Yep LSD was very much a planned operation sold as a anti govt, anti est kinda thingy. Came with the added benifit of thinking it was hip to tune in and drop thus less of a problem for those in charge. Also MSM 'helped' using their see eye a talking points, associate drug taking hippies with the anti war movement which scared away 'regular' people and blackwashed anti war as something bad and to do with druggies. Richard Alpert better known as Ram Daas, which obvioulsy was a play on his sexual preference, was also on the payroll selling the whole - relax everything is perfect, everything is karma, just let go off your thoughts etc. Yes I paraphrase but you get the drift.
ReplyDeleteI could go on and on listing who was on the payroll or working for see eye a among others, but the list is bloody long.
@Guesser, I couldn't find a thing online to suggest Leary had any gay tendencies, and for a man who shunned convention in every other way including being a big advocate of 'free love' it didn't seem plausible to me that he'd marry and divorce 5 women pretending to be straight.
ReplyDelete@just sayin' - THANKS - excellent summation, many many thanks, you're doing God's work here.
ReplyDelete@jwin is 1000% spot on. See Eye Ay started experimenting with LSD during MKULTRA in the 50s - Leary, Kesey, Ginsberg & Co. brought it to a mass audience in the early 60s (sponsored by the ultra-right wing Mellon family, lol) conveniently just as the Vietnam War was heating up.
ReplyDeleteFrom a distance it looked like radical anti-war action, but what it really did was short-circuit the American Left and send it down a rabbit hole of disorganized, drugged out debauchery and incoherent individualism ("The Me Generation") for the next 50 years. The hippie gurus helped create, in essence, an ANTI-politics that eventually gave us Reagan, then Bush-Clinton-Bush, and now Trump. Endless war, a gutted welfare state, and the highest rates of drug abuse + incarceration in the industrialized world - Far Out, Man!
It's also starting to look pretty obvious that Secret Agent Leary did some fucked up stuff to Winona.
Dave McGowan isn't the greatest writer or reporter but he nailed it in Weird Scenes Inside the Canyon.
ReplyDeleteDuring the era of the Be-Ins the penniless unemployed Owsley was giving away about $60,000 worth of precurser chemicals fabricated into LSD several times a month. McGowan fingers US Naval Intelligence.
Good story...great posts.
So how did the teenage girl die then? I take it this is the main point of the story...
ReplyDeletelots of talk lately of mkultra and lsd...i'm about to start watching "wormwood" on netflix (docudrama on this subject). looks good! maybe all of the mentions have been subliminal propaganda to interest us in the show!!!!! lol.
ReplyDeletedarn! it's not out until dec 15th. i'm not on netflix's payroll, btw.
ReplyDelete@Cadmium77.. a copy of the original newspaper article:
ReplyDeletehttps://cdnc.ucr.edu/cgi-bin/cdnc?a=d&d=DS19690725.2.32
@cadmium77 ah yes, Augustus Owsley Stanley III - LSD king, sound engineer/logo designer for Palo Alto "acid test" house band The Grateful Dead, who just so happened to be the grandson of the powerful Congressman, Senator, and Governor of Kentucky, Augustus O. Stanley I.
ReplyDeleteNothing suspicious about that "rebel", nope
Leary, one his "male gay friends" would be Allen Ginsberg
ReplyDeleteNot sure if Ginsberg was "closeted" at the time...
DeleteConservative William F. Buckley had Leary on his political debate show "Firing Line." He clearly regarded Lear with utter contempt, describing how he came to the studio in an ordinary suit, changed to a Nehru jacket and love beads for the show, and changed back before he left.
ReplyDeleteBuckley actually WAS see eye aye for a while. There no way he was in cahoots with Leary, whom he openly despised as a phony.
Lol - that's funny that you think that, if they were both on cia's payroll, that they would be in cahoots.
DeleteLookout mountain speaks the Truth.
ReplyDeleteTake heed.

ReplyDeleteso summarizing from above...
ReplyDeletebright eyed-18 yr old gay college boy - unknown (but would be 43-44 now?)
aging counter-culture celebrity hero - Timothy Leary
hostess / former member of the Yugoslav Royal fam - Catherine Oxenburg
suggestions for the college boy (all 43/44 actors):
Jim Parsons
Ryan Phillippe -- (in New York during that time doing OLTL playing iconic gay character? - bi / gay tho?)
Joaquin Phoenix
Seth Green
Yeah I blew the math quiz Keanu is 53 not 43 :(
ReplyDelete@Loookout Mountain No one forced anyone on the American left to participate in drugged out debauchery. They did it willingly due to their continuous interest in taking drugs. Many of these same drug advocates have been able to position themselves in powerful positions in academia and corporations and are back to experimenting with all types of hard and soft drugs under the guise of "scientific research". They've given it a veneer of respectability and will continue pushing these drugs but wearing suits and lab coats instead of hippie outfits. It was being countercultural that actually hurt them in their drug push and they realized it so they have no cloaked everything in terms of scientific and health benefits and normality.
ReplyDeleteOK,@just sayin' that sounds likely. I don't know if the young actor is going to be as famous as those mentioned though. And likely yes to the LSD CIA story, just be cause one person hates another in the same org. They aren't always on the same page. We really don't have to make up conspiracy theories, more than enough real ones.
ReplyDeleteNot at all surprised to hear Timothy Leary was a huge fucking loser. A "rebel" Harvard professor touting a bullshit brand of armchair Buddhism-lite mixed in with drug use advocacy always seemed pretty phony to me. If he hadn't been a fraud he clearly would have picked psilocybin to usher in his psychedelic revolution since it melts brain a hell of a lot more profoundly than that stuff Owsley cooked up. Not sure if Trippy Tim had anything to do with some of the early "therapeutic" experimentation with lsd and prison inmates, but what they did to some of those guys was positively cruel and unusual. Like dosing them days on end with something to the tune of 100x what would be enough to cause a trip in regular people and then sticking them back in a cell. "Enjoy your afternoon behind bars, guys!"
ReplyDeleteNever heard the Winona and Leary stuff before. But damn, looking at it now, what the hell is this photo? Gross. http://archive.is/dQJj8
ReplyDeleteI'll second the recommendation of the late Dave McGowan's Weird Scenes. It's amazing how many of the "counter-culture" icons came from military/intelligence families, mostly from the Northeast, and all found themselves in one neighborhood in California before it became the cool place to be.
ReplyDeletethis is making me want to reread jon ronson's "the men who stare at goats". as guesser said, who needs to make up conspiracy theories with all the craziness in real life. (btw, those government experiments went on during the 70's and 80's so can't be pinned to one political party. i get tired of everything aberrant being pinned on the left, but i suppose my political commentary gets tiresome as well.)
ReplyDeleteSad but true, Google males stars born in 1974 and the list is long (Leonardo, Giovanni, Joaquin, etc) and literally none went to college.
ReplyDeleteRight on @Cail Corishev - McGowan's "Weird Scenes Inside The Canyon" is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the US govt's likely active participation in the shaping of the 60s "counterculture".
ReplyDelete@just sayin' Ronson's work can be a good jumping off point but IMO he's a mainstream-friendly limited hangout artist. He tends to dismiss these covert programs as "wacky military guys believing in wacky things that didn't work". If only.
If you want to take a TRULY dark trip down that road, google Lieutenant Colonel Michael Aquino, US Army and the "praesidio abuse scandal" of the late 1980s.
http://www.nytimes.com/1987/11/16/us/army-will-close-child-care-center.html
http://www.outpost-of-freedom.com/aquino01.htm
Aquino was a highly decorated Green Beret and career PSYOPS (psychological operations) officer in the US Army, who just so happened to help found the Church of Satan with Anton LaVey and later went on to establish his own Satanic cult, the Temple of Set (still around today). Aquino was accused of molesting/torturing dozens of children who were taken from the daycare center of the US Army base at the Praesidio in San Francisco.
Here's Aquino on an episode of Oprah (?!) in 1988, defending himself:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEFcMoyT2BM
Aquino in his own words:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GI8XThaJrk
(at 05:23, Aquino proudly shows off one of his ceremonial daggers which originally belonged to a general in the Waffen-SS. Aquino is a huge admirer of Heinrich Himmler and the Nazi occultists.)
I agree weird scenes inside the canyon is a must read. Fascinating book! So many of the lead musicians at the head of the counter culture had suspicious ties
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised with all the talk of his 5 ex wives that no one has mentioned that one of them was Uma Thurman's mother.
ReplyDeleteThere was a big Bob Dylan concert in 1992 with an afterparty at Tommy Makem's bar but I don't see how Dylan fits the "popularized/invented/manufactured something" thing. It wasn't the anniversary of him plugging in at Newport. Then I thought of Robert Moog, but he didn't really fit, either. But it was recently disclosed that the father of Catherine Oxenberg's oldest child India (who is involved in the NXIVM cult) was a big drug smuggler in California in the 90s until the DEA caught him. That might explain why Catherine Oxenberg might throw a party for Timothy Leary, a possible business connection of her baby daddy.

ReplyDeleteThis ISN'T about Leary. I haven't read ANY of the material you folks cite, but I've been a casual study of the sixties for years now, & yeah, Leary was full of shit. They all were. But he didn't create anything. He was a two-bit hustling con man who got lucky and found damn near a whole generation of suckers. He's the one who molested Winona Ryder, no question, but he's clean on this one.
ReplyDeleteNo, children, this one is all about Dr. Albert Hoffman, the chemist responsible for LSD who starting buying his own hype & liking the feeling of smoke blown up his ass.
And just so we're clear: Ginsberg's clean. Yeah, he was gay; but he was never particularly well closeted, & so far as I know his partners were all of age. Plus, Ginsberg twigged that Michael Savage was batshit crazy when Savage was in his twenties. So, to repeat: Ginsburg's clean.
Fun fact about Ginsberg, he appears in the movie Chicken Hawk, a documentary about pedos. He attends one of the NAMBLA meetings.
ReplyDeleteDave McGowan wrote four impressive books and did a lot of excellent writing on his website.
ReplyDeleteAnother person who has done a lot of important work on the real history of the counterculture is Jan Irvin, of gnosticmedia.com. I'm sure many of you follow him. He interviewed McGowan at length at least once.
Among Irvin's voluminous work, he had a lot of conversations with Joe Atwill until they had a falling out recently. They talked a lot about these things. Atwill also does a lot of audio interviews still.
Irvin also brought to my attention the work of Steve Outrim, primarily on Burning Man and its background. Irvin had conducted many hours of interviews with Outrim, who I find highly impressive. He shows how Burning Man and Silicon Valley in general emerged out of the counterculture and in many ways are what it turned into.
Now Atwill and Outrim are doing a podcast together, or will be soon. I believe it's on "Revolution Radio" which is hosted on freedomslips.com.
Says nothing about person being an actor. I see Michael Doughtery was born in '74 and went to NYU. Writer, director, producer with a lot of ties to Bryan Singer (timing and all...)
ReplyDeleteWhy can't anyone just write CIA? Why all the "see eye a" stuff?
ReplyDeleteBecause the CIA has a computer system that looks around message boards for the term. The system determines the living location of people who are “on to their covert activities” and kidnaps them, tortures and sometimes kills them.
DeleteI know it’s lazy, but if Singer was in NY in the early 90s, he could’ve been at the Oxenberg party and it would be the right age for the mid-20s boyfriend. Unless the bf was one of the club kids at the time (not Alig and them, otherwise that murder would have been mentioned)
ReplyDeleteSince Warhol was dead, and the people of acid house and similar pop culture were too young (thinking of the Acid House smiley which was HUGE then and we still use today, albeit differently) I agree Timothy Leary is as good a guess as any.
The Bob Dylan guess is interesting, but I just can’t see Tommy Makem (or any of the remaining Clancys) having an after party thrown by Oxenberg, even if they were Dynasty fans.
Is the college boy meant to be famous. Or is this just a “look at how IN I was back in the early 90s)
Because the powers are smart enough to run a massive drug/pedo/satanic/etc operation all over California for decades, including having some Army officer cofound the Church of Satan in between running secret psyops programs in Vietnam, BUt, too dumb to tell their computer monitoring programs to look for "see eye A."

ReplyDelete@Gordon Alister Crowley was MI6, and while I don't know if he believed in all the satan stuff, The Intel Agencies for long time have used it as a cover, so people like you hear the word satan etc and don't bother to look further. Obviously it works, but if you check out Ben Franklin you will find information that ??? if he was working for the Brits, and there is actually documented evidence that he andI think his name was Lord Dempner?? set up a black magic coven as part of their ruse and to misdirect what they were actually up to.
Fun fact, as you bring up Vietnam but operation Phoenix was the blueprint for Vietnam and it was then adapted and implemented here. One of teh guys behind that was CIA Fuller and guess what his daughter married the uncle of the boston bombers????
I suggest you do some research before dismissing the fact that Intel Agencies, which are just a front for some very powerful families, have been behind a lot of things and drugs are just the tip of the iceburg. I think it was former head of the CIA, name escapes me,who said - we will know we have been successful when 90% of the people believe everything they read. If you don't want to be a notch on their belt I suggest you check out Jan Irvings paper on Gordon Wasson. It is well researched and shows how the so called counter culture was started. He has several papers on it. The rabbit hole goes much deeper than that.
aw, you're no fun, moviebuff! logic, shmogic.
ReplyDeleteOr that they would care what a bunch of people commenting on a gossip website have to say about ham sandwich maker programs that are now 40+ years old.

ReplyDeleteNear the end of his life, Timothy Leary asked me for a cigarette and I turned him down. My friend thought I was being cruel and an ass (he looked like death warmed over), but I didn’t wanna do anything for him. I’ve always felt a mild twinge about that, but after reading this, the twinge is gone. Yay!
ReplyDeleteThe thing about Aquino and the Presidio Day Care Scandal is that Wikipedia already scrubbed it once the gate of pizza was opened. The people in the daycare responsible for abusing the kids chose children too young to testify in court ON PURPOSE. Something like 60+ kids abused, and several had STDs. Army kept it hush hush.
ReplyDeleteFort Dix and West Point both had similar scandals, again covered up.
But shhh! We're not supposed to know about the use of religion and sex abuse to traumatize kids, let alone the government's role in giving it a thumbs up.

ReplyDelete"Popularized/invented/manufactured something still very much in use today" Leary did not invent LSD
ReplyDeleteDidn't Michael Savage (at 20 was Michael Wiener) sue Ginz in court and win?
ReplyDelete
