Palace officials announced Monday that Prince Harry is engaged to Meghan Markle, confirming months of rumors that the couple was close to tying the knot.
Harry's brother, Prince William, and his pregnant wife Kate welcomed Markle to the royal family.
"We are very excited for Harry and Meghan," they said in a statement. "It has been wonderful getting to know Meghan and to see how happy she and Harry are together."
The couple appeared at a photocall in the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace in London on Monday afternoon, where Harry told reporters he knew Markle was "the one" from "the very first time we met."
The Prince declined to elaborate on his proposal to Markle, but when asked whether it was romantic, he smiled and said, "of course it was."
Was waiting for you to be up and post about this. She got what she wanted!
ReplyDeleteWish I was excited about this, but something about Markle I don't trust. Can't put my finger on it, but she kind of reminds me of Pippa "look at me" Middleton.
ReplyDelete+1 at the Pippa Middleton comment
DeleteI see a little Pippa in that photo!!!
DeleteGood luck to her. Being a princess is a very, very difficult job: the Japanese crown princess has struggled with depression for decades, and Harry's mother certainly didn't have an easy time with it either.
ReplyDeleteIt's awful what happened to Princess Masako. They cornered her and trapped her into a cage. 💔
DeleteYes. Princess Masako is a very sad lady. Cruel, cruel people.
DeleteShe is loving the attention and publicity. She got what she wanted. I don't like her. Something is off about them as a couple. I've said it since their relationship was announced
ReplyDeleteShe’s an IH (Immaculate Heart) alum.
ReplyDeleteMeh. The whole "royals" thing bores me. I tried to feign interest, but I can't. Such a yawn fest.
ReplyDelete+1000
DeleteShe has done awful things in relationships in the past to get what she wants. Harry is emotionally damaged already, there is no way that level of self involvement on her part can make him happy. That said it’s going to be funny to watch British social circles Aim to be friends with a California nobody.
ReplyDeleteCha-ching!
ReplyDeleteOff to examine Enty's "Meghan Markle" tag.
ReplyDeleteOoooh, can't wait for the American divorcee to live on UK-taxpayer money! What a great choice! As an American, she's definitely knowledgeable about British traditions, societal roles, social issues, and public expectations. Not to mention, she's shown in the past that she has good judgment and commitment to lifetime choices (as evidenced by her divorce), that she avoids the media to the best of her abilities (as evidenced by her magazine interview and pap walks), and that she has the ability to be completely apolitical. Not to mention, she and Prince Harry have been dating for SO long (a whole year and a half!!1!) and they've lived together for a while now, so they're fully confident that they're completely compatible - which is good because, after all, no one wants to pay for another divorce in ten years' (tops) time.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. She was with her last husband for 10 years and then divorced within 2 years of marriage. I feel like he was so desperate for love and a family that she played him like a fiddle. Definitely 10 years tops.
DeleteThey're like a modern day Wallace and Simpson.
ReplyDeletewhat 'awful things' has she done in the past?
ReplyDeleteWas it CDAN that was saying that the Dutch Queen Maxima was going to help Masako escape?
ReplyDeleteMaxima, who was originally from Argentina, seems to have done pretty well with her job - although there is a lot less media pressure in the Netherlands than there is in the UK.
Letizia in Spain and Charlene in Monaco, not so much. Mette-Marit in Norway also seems to have struggled with her position.
Alexandra in Denmark - the first Asian in a European Royal Family - divorced her prince about 10 years ago. Her husband, also a second son, was no prize. She still lives in Denmark of her children.
I don’t get these “awful” things either?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I will wish them a most sincere congrats. Hopefully, they are the lid to each other’s pot.
Because of her children. The youngest is 15, though, and Alexandra will probably leave Denmark when he grows up. She's not well-liked, after she was found to be shirking her royal duties and not doing the charity work she was assigned in return for her public paycheck.
ReplyDeleteBut will she be a Princess doesn't the Queen have to give her that title? Not sure how this royal thing works. William and Kate took the Duke & Duchess titles over her being a Princess. Though I guess she will be Queen someday. Which trumps Princess.
ReplyDeleteI could see them taking different titles for an easier life. But something about her screams MAKE ME A PRINCESS!
@timebob, I don’t believe she would be eligible for an “princess” title (though she could be known informally as princess Meghan. More than likely, the Queen will grant Meghan and Harry and Duke and Duchess title.
Delete@Nutty Flavor, my original question was in reference to Meghan, not your explanation of Princess Masako and Princess Maxima, quite fascinating by the way! Now that I am married to a Swedish National, I have become interested in non-British Royal families (via my MIL).
@Herrr You don't seem to understand how the whole Royalty income thing works. They are rich. They signed over all the income from all their properties to the government in return the government gives them back 15% of the profit to live on. The rest goes into government funds. If you end them "living on taxpayers money" They get to take back the money they are giving to the government & it goes back into their own coffers & the UK is suddenly down millions of pounds (in 2013 the estate made a profit of 267.1 million pounds) and taxes will go up. Google "The Sovereign Grant". The Duchy of Cornwall would cover the expenses for the Prince of Wales sons, the total income for that Duchy alone for the 2015-2016 financial year was 33.5 million pounds and does not fall under the Queens sovereign grant so they get to keep all the money from that.
ReplyDeleteShe'll be a princess--Princess Harry. Kate is also a princess, Princess William. But the Duchess of Cambridge is a better title so that's what she uses.
ReplyDeleteAll the Brits are out in full force with their nastiness.
ReplyDeleteJustPaige, I think she looks like Pippa too. I have always wondered if Harry and Pippa secretly dated at some point.
ReplyDeleteI cannot believe how naive Harry is being. He is one of the most, if not the most, eligible bachelor in the world and he chooses someone with so much baggage. I wonder what the royals really think!
+1
DeleteWho are the nasty Brits? I don't see anyone being particularly nasty.
ReplyDeleteThat said, Meghan is taking on the job of representing them, so I think it's fair enough for people to have an opinion about whether or not she's right for the job.
God knows Americans have said terrible things about Melania Trump and Michelle Obama.
Meh. Harry's lost more and more of my interest & respect after years of scandals and stunts he pulled. I don't know Markle but she's suspicious. I feel like they gonna be the time bomb, to cause another Royal Family scandal but even if they finally are, I won't care so much.
ReplyDelete@wwax - As a massive admirer of the royal family, I'm well-aware of how they earn their income, thank you. However, I'm not sure what your point is, since I never said that the royal family shouldn't receive a taxpayer-funded income. Also, I don't who you're citing when you quoted "living on taxpayers money" because it's certainly not me.
ReplyDeleteThe fact of the matter is though that in some areas, and/or on certain occasions, Meghan Markle (or Rachel or whatever her name is) WILL be receiving taxpayer-funded benefits, and that irks me for the aforementioned reasons. If Prince Harry would like to relinquish his royal title and all the benefits that go along with it, and live solely on his own income (or his father's, rather), then I wouldn't care if he married a cactus.
On a side note, neither Kate nor Meghan can have the title of princess before their name. Only women born into the royal family can style their names like that. For example, Princess Anne and Princess Beatrice were born into the royal family, so they can style themselves as Princess ____.
ReplyDeletePrincess Diana, however, was technically known as "Diana, Princess of Wales." So when/if Charles becomes king, Prince William will become the new prince of Wales and Kate will become Catherine, Princess of Wales. Meghan will likely never be princess of anything ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Hope that clears it up a bit! :)
Harry is the runt of the litter. There has always been speculation Charles is not his biological father. Then you had the manner in which his mother died and more speculation about who did her in. She was beloved but an emotional train wreck. Rachel Markle is in her late 30's. Three years older than Harry. That said, the guy is happy. His brother is married with kids. He wants a family, too. He's pretty much been drifting since Diana died. I don't think she has lived in England long enough to know what she is getting herself into. His 'crowd' will never accept a divorced American of middle class in their ranks. Lots of smiles as the knives go in. I feel sorry for the both of them. It is going to be tough.
ReplyDeleteWhat exactly can/will Meghan do that has everyone's knickers twisted? Parcel off Kensington Palace for timeshares? I mean, you don't trust her because she will do what????
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a hellish, thankless position to be in - as evidenced by the tone of a lot of these comments. Yeah, she'll get go to a lot of cool places and wear some fantastic clothes/jewelry, but her life will no longer belong to her. I hope she's ready for that. I think this is definitely a "be careful for what you wish for" situation.
On a side note, I am looking forward to Billy Carter-esque family shenanigans. There seems to be a lot of potential for that kind of hoopla.
HERRR-Read in the DM she will be known as Duchess of Sussex.
ReplyDeleteYes Boo, that is correct but I think if she is kind and gracious maybe their piss poor attitudes will change. The Count is right, she is very hot! Harry is ok...and I like ginger but their temperament can be difficult! And kind of scary....
ReplyDeleteShe is very hot, Sd Auntie, but unfortunately this means she'll never do a nude scene. As such, she is yesterday's news to me now.
ReplyDeleteSmh. I give it about eight years.
ReplyDeleteAnd I totes agree @MazieBee.
ReplyDeleteLol and rotfl at you, @Herrr.... I couldn't have said it better. :-D
ReplyDeleteAnd oh yeah it's a very different culture, even though we speak the same language. Very, very different.
delete account-The Dynasty will be finished by then. (8 years) Kate & Ms Markle will be working for Anna Wintour and Will & Harry will be working at the local Amazon warehouse. George, Charlotte & the new baby will be in foster care. Liz & Phil will be in an old age pensioners flat in Surrey. Sadly, I won't be around to see this.
ReplyDeleteI think they're the real deal and wish them all the best.
ReplyDeleteAs for title, upon marriage Meghan will automatically become Her Royal Highness Princess Henry of Wales. However, the Queen is expected to grant the couple a royal dukedom on their wedding day, so Harry and Meghan will become known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex (the most likely choice).
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteJudging by the history of the British royal family, even with the recent changes (marrying commoners), she can't reasonably expect the level of celebrity that Kate enjoys. Kate is British, she's married to a future king, mother to another future king, she's a style icon to many and a lot of people seem really crazy about her. She's basically the new Diana minus the horrendous marriage and abuse (or so it seems). Meghan is a divorced foreigner, older than Harry and people hardly know her. If anything, she's the new Wallis Simpson minus the abdication crisis. She's old enough and been around enough to understand that, I guess. If this is what she wants and if Harry is happy with her, good for them. And with Harry being quite far in line to the throne, they can probably live their life as they please much more than Kate and William can.
ReplyDeleteWasn’t there a blind about the nude photos being posted to a website? Wonder if that will happen.
ReplyDeleteI like them together, they make a beautiful couple. I hope they have tons of kids. Personally, I look forward to watching their wedding on TV. Mazel tov to the happy couple
ReplyDeleteIf they want kids. Some people don’t.
Deletei just don't get the hostility towards her. i know very little about her but i see accusations about how awful she is, with nothing to back them up.
ReplyDeleteshe seems to have a nice family, she must be pretty bright because she graduated from a good college with a degree in international studies and drama. she got married and divorced--so she's human and makes mistakes.
where are the crimes she's committed? she looks like pippa? not really---except for having long dark hair. and what would that indicate anyway?
people seem way more protective of harry than they need to be. he's a grown man, he's definitely been around, he chose her and he seems to be head over heels. how any of that makes her 'suspicious' just escapes me.
i hope they're very happy together.
@Dog Mom, I'm wondering: what is Meghan's "baggage"? Surely a previous, childless marriage doesn't constitute an overwhelming amount of baggage? Unless I'm missing something...
ReplyDeleteThey look happy. Having said that, who in their right minds would envy them? The realist in me believes that she agreed to marry him DESPITE having to undertake such public dissection as seen on forums like this.
Trying to understand. It all sounds like sour grapes to me.
Im all for the royals expanding their gene pool. Freakazoids
ReplyDeleteDon't care as long as i get a day off work.
ReplyDelete+1@nancer, subconscious prejudice.
ReplyDeleteI wish her luck. She's gonna need it. Camilla hates her guts and has the attack dogs waiting in the wings to rip her apart. She's a manipulative opportunist who doesn't miss a beat, and he's a very naive pothead and alcoholic. Some of you said it right, these two are oil and water. And love rarely has anything to do with these high-profile society marriages. A foreigner and a commoner like her just doesn't marry into the upper echelons of British society and get acceptance. Appropriate breeding and class matters a whole lot to those people, and she comes from neither. They will laugh at her behind her back.
ReplyDeleteIf this marriage does take place I suspect that Camilla will tighten the screws and run her off within a year or two, and she will get nothing after they force her out---just like they did to Sarah Ferguson. And if she crosses them or try to embarrass them they will arrange an accident for her---just like they did to Diana.
Like I said...oil and water. I don't think that she really understands the history and traditions of the Windsors. A washed up, divorced, middle aged, C list Hollywood actress clawing her way into their circle??? She doesn't fit anywhere in there at all.
Camilla has no power or influence being a divorcee herself. She's too busy putting in an act for her own marriage to even think about upsetting Harry's. Any rumors will be coming from palace staff who are snobbier than their employers.
DeleteI’m curious how the “rebel nuns” feel about her becoming a princess. Not really how they are trying to shape a modern woman. Though, maybe this is her chance to redefine “princess.” Alumnae seem happy.
ReplyDelete@austin @nancer, in the British upper class, being a "tradesperson" is considered declassé. It's OK to work for a living as long as you don't really need the money - ie Princess Eugenie and Beatrice's jobs they rarely show up for - but to actually be careerist is distasteful.
ReplyDeleteMeghan is a career woman. So were Kate Middleton's parents, and they were (and are) viciously mocked in Britain. (Kate's mom is not-so-jokingly called "Doors to Manual" because she used to be a flight attendant.) Kate is still made fun of because her parents now own a party-planning business.
Sarah Ferguson was also cruelly mocked, as was Edward's wife Sophie before she gave up her PR business and fit into the firm.
I'm sure racism is an aspect of the dislike for Meghan, but it is not the only aspect. Many Brits don't like Americans in the first place, so being a Black American is a double-negative. Being a Black American woman who has appeared half-naked on film willingly (unlike Kate's sad topless paparazzi shots) is a triple-negative.
On the other hand, divorce and a questionable family history (her white father and brother have been in trouble with the law) seems to be less of a problem, given the Royal Family's own recent travails.
@John Doe: g’way outta that! Camilla could probably give two shits, and both from a basset hound.
ReplyDeleteI’m still waiting to find out where this social climber reputation is coming from. Not to mention this “Harry is a naive little lamb” narrative. If any royal has been around the block a time or two, it’s Harry.
ReplyDeleteIt's posts like this that show how "evolved" most of the commenters are. She's ambitious, she's shady, she's a user. She's not an aristocrat, she's not Chelsy Davy, she's not European or ticks off any of the boxes. She's black. These posts bring out your true you-blinds about rappers/black entertainers etc. will show your biases that you try to mask with extra words. Yet you'll go hard against anyone anti-lgtbq or animal cruelty. On topic: congrats to them. He's no true prize but if he's happy with her that's his choice. I only feel for Michael K right now.
ReplyDeleteDlisted has gone way down hill. I don’t even bother with that blog anymore.
DeleteShe will be like Sarah Ferguson
ReplyDeleteI don’t really have an opinion on her. She seems nice, and she’s cute. I think it’s off how short of a time they’ve been together, but meh they are adults. I’m loving how she’s not 25, though. It’s refreshing.
ReplyDeleteWon't get to the altar.
ReplyDelete@Sunspirit, this isn't really about her at all. Harry got a talking to. He's getting older, and The Firm no longer finds his cavorting around at wild parties in Nazi getup with drugs and hookers acceptable. They told him to stop it and pick a woman to marry. Image, you see. The tabloid stories were embarrassing the family. They didn't care which woman he picked because he is now far removed from succession to the throne. BUT, they obviously didn't expect him to pick HER! She's a nobody who has embarrassed them in the tabloids with photos, and sordid details about her and Harry's hookups. There have been many stories leaked out of Buckingham Palace to the gossip websites and news rags about how pissed off Camilla and Elizabeth are that he was going with her. She's half black, and they evidently don't care very much for that little fact either. I believe that this is precisely the reason why he's marrying her---to give them all the finger. Probably also payback too for lying to him about who is real father is, and for murdering his mother.
ReplyDeleteHarry has always literally been the red-headed stepchild. The older he gets the more he looks like his real father, James Hewitt. But I doubt that this is 'love'. I agree with you that something seems off. He has 'dated' a few women but has never really been involved in serious relationships with any of them that lasted for any significant period of time. Some of them were hags and some of them were smokin' hot. But, he's only 33 years old and he's been through almost 20 different women over the years---though much of the time in between them he was single and just partying and boozing and smoking weed.
I'm gonna just say it. The 'off' thing that I sense here is that he's gay and that this is a bearding contract.
@John Doe I do agree with most of your comment.
DeleteI don't see this relationship lasting. How Sarah Ferguson acted, she will be like that. I just saw an interview Harry and Meghan did and he looked backed into a corner. Like a deer in headlights. She's an actress, not a good one, so she can act in love and infatuated with him.
Diana's Father and brother are also red heads. Harry has the Windsor 'too close together' eyes. The only coincidence regarding Hewitt is that he very much resembled Diana's Father when he was young. This parentage speculation is stupid and shows just how little people really know of the Royal lineage.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDelete@Correy Just out of curiosity, do you think a white American C-list actress - age 36, divorced, with a complicated romantic history - would have been welcomed into the British Royal Family?
ReplyDeleteI don't care about them, I'm looking at the postings here. Trying to act like it isn’t about race when race is a component. The royals don't have a leg to stand on image wise. His father is a guy who married the woman he wanted to be a tampon to, his uncle hung out with Epstein, & his grandfather (& great-great uncle) were Nazi sympathizers. So what she's the new Wallis Simpson,is she going to have him cavort with arms dealers and those who child sex traffickers? Eh, next battle.
Delete+1@Nutty_Flavor, bias and prejudice are part and parcel of the same basic subconscious thought process. The subconscious aspect = how amazingly unaware of just how transparent they are.
ReplyDeleteJohn stop it. James Hewitt is not Harry's father. He mostly takes after the Spencer (Diana's) side of the family, but his ears are all Prince Charles', as is the now becoming apparent bald spot on the crown of his head.
ReplyDeleteHarry looks exactly like Phillip did at his age. I do not doubt for a minute that he is Charles' bio kid.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised by the amount of hatred for Markle, I don't mean here particulary but there are racist comments appearing online about her in the UK press. All the people who are doing this are 'common' compared to the Royals anyway, so are they actually in favour of racial purity?
ReplyDeleteI'm anti - monarchy because the principle is just wrong in this day and age. It's wrong to see one genetic line as superior and hold a position because of it. Personally I don't see the problem with Harry's choice...people seriously think she is completely devious and he hasn't noticed? People's prejudices are influencing them but they don't seem to see it. So what if she was divorced or an actress, or you know....not 100% white, (shock horror!) it's not the 1950s anymore and the Royals know they have to modernise to have any chance at staying relevant.
Instead of arguing about Meghan why don't the British people demand answers about Andrew and Epstien? Mountbatten and Savile? Nope....too busy being influenced by whether they 'like' the royals they have never met or not.
+100000
DeleteOh, I think there's still room for royalty in the modern age. In general, I think it's a good idea to divorce the ceremonial and value-carrying from the political. Then you don't have people like Bill Clinton, Donald Trump, LBJ or Andrew Jackson pretending to be the conscience of the nation.
ReplyDelete@Austin, subconscious bias is often developed out of experience. It's otherwise known as "intuition." The problem is culturally-transmitted and reinforced prejudice, not what we know to be true based on our own life as we have lived it. I reject your suggestion that the two are the same.
@nutty, unconscious bias is just a kind & gentrified way of being a bigot. Most of them aren't out of their personal experience, but someone else's. That article about her mom from months ago shocked others but they still tried to justify their feelings. UB is the reason why certain ppl don't get hired promoted or treated like everyone else. Look at the #metoo campaign: everyone is understanding until poc came forward. Even Weinstein only denied Lupita's claim.
Delete@John Doe - very interesting. Read this blind from back in March.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.crazydaysandnights.net/2017/03/mr-x-blind-item-1.html
John Doe-You are saying what all of us know. Most of the Windsor men are gay. Harry is very fem. I think Philip is the only truly straight man in the equation. They can afford permanent beards. Not many men can.
ReplyDeleteCatsup & Nancer....I wonder how some commenters are formulating such bad opinions about Meghan. She's lived in Toronto a few years to film Suits & I haven't heard anything negative about her. She's poised, accomplished and pretty but this translates to social climbing, etc? Don't get it.
ReplyDeletePersonally I think it's great to get "new blood" into the RF. Can't keep marrying cousins...it's affected how they look. Maybe peeps are peed off she isn't horsey looking like Camilla? Does she need a horsey makeover?
Camilla was rather pretty when she was young, and is by all accounts a vivacious and energetic person.
ReplyDelete@ Austin, the Windsor bloodline is Germanic in origin. They were fair complexioned people with dark hair and light eyes. The Spencer bloodline is a mix of German, Italian, French, Jewish origin. They also had dark hair and light eyes. No one on either side on the bloodlines had that ruddy complexion and red hair that Harry has.
ReplyDeletePlease google a picture of Diana’s brother. Strong resemblance in my opinion. But if you don’t agree about the resemblance, the coloring is the same as Harry.
DeleteGoogle Earl Spencer 8 and 9, Diana's father and brother bith had red hair. In fact look up the entire line and red hair keeps popping up. You know nothing John Doe
DeleteOkay Nutty_Flavor, but I didn't say that bias and prejudice are the same, just that they are part of the same basic psychological process, and if you look them up in a dictionary, each is listed as a synonym of the other, meaning 'similar' in nature.
ReplyDeleteWow, people are really getting twisted up about this. They look very happy together, I wish them the best of luck. I think it's great that both of Diana's sons married for love.
ReplyDelete@John Doe, have you really never seen a red-haired, ruddy German? Exhibit A: Boris Becker.
ReplyDelete@John.. Diana's brother Earl Spencer and Prince Harry
ReplyDeletehttps://i.ytimg.com/vi/dg6y0xYYx30/hqdefault.jpg
Ugh. Okay. Here it is. I am not saying this is right or even how I choose to live, but this is reality.
ReplyDeleteThe world is not a social egalitarian utopia, not even close. Like it or not there are classes. You can change financial and educational positions, but cannot change social class. Yes, you can be upper class and poor, or lower class and a billionaire. There are a multitude of aspects of class, but background is pretty significant especially the higher up the food chain you go. Family connections, lineage and appropriate stage of life experiences are important.
Most Americans are fine with the pulling yourself up by your bootstraps thing. It is our culture's history to do that. However, we have only been around since 1776 and not really any further back than about 1620, so we are cultural newbies. Even with us, there are many instances where class is important and being famous or rich will not get you accepted.
The issue is not that she is not smart, pretty, or fun. It is an issue of belonging. She is not upper class or even upper middle class. She does not have a notable family. There have been numerous articles about how undesirable (trashy) her relatives are. She too carries that badge by many of her own behaviors and life choices. Those are only the beginnings of the issues she will face by marrying an important royal.
This marriage isn't just between Meghan and Harry, but Meghan, Harry and the world. Like it or not, unless he abdicates, he/she/they are public figures/fodder for gossip. If she doesn't want the public scrutiny, then she shouldn't date or marry Harry. However, she is full steam ahead so she seems not to care about the ramifications.
Boris is a perfect example Nutty_Flavor.
ReplyDelete+1 Animal House.
Have a Coudenhove-Kalergi Christmas, Harry.
ReplyDelete@Lucy, I never saw that blind. Interesting! Very, very interesting.
ReplyDeleteI have a vibe about Harry and this whole situation with Meghan. She's a very attractive woman but obviously not the best choice for a marriage mate for him. Pippa (Kate's younger sister) was a much better match. She wanted to get married and she was really into him. There was just something very strange about how he ended the situation with her. It seemed to me that it was really she who very suddenly ended the situation with him. When you're dating a woman who's REALLY into you, she just doesn't stop liking you or stop going out with you like that. Its usually because of something that you do to hurt her or something that she finds out about you that turns her off from you completely. I think she found out about Harry and decided that she wanted a real husband.
Harry is not all that great looking, but he's average...and looks are not that important on a man anyway. But he's royalty, he's famous, he's rich, and he seems like a decent enough person. Petty stuff aside, I doubt that most women who want a husband and a stable future would say no if Prince Harry proposed to them. But he would have to be careful about who he approaches to negotiate a bearding contract. Meghan is perfect. She's a washed up middle aged actress who's looking for an opportunity. He needs cover. It makes sense. Especially after I read the comments in that blind.
I couldn't quite put my finger on what it was about him ...but I think I've figured it out.

Delete36 isn’t considered middle aged anymore.
Delete@Nutty, I'm not saying that they don't exist. I'm saying that there was no one in the Windsor or Spencer families that had those physical traits. Where did Harry get the ginger qualities from?
ReplyDelete@John, I posted a photo comparison for you further up.

ReplyDelete@ Nutty, I agree about the cultural relevance and prestige of royalty in present day life. It is a rare thing to see kings and queens anywhere anymore. I'm totally fascinated with them and their pomp and show. I haven't been to England in a few years but whenever I go I always visit Buckingham Palace to stand outside and watch the changing of the guards, and I love the tours...all of them, to see the mansions, and castles, and the Tower of London with the Crown jewels.
ReplyDeleteWell, I don't know about going there now with all this terror shit going on but...still amazing to see.
They are certainly good for the UK's tourism industry.
Just replying in general. I know people she was close with in LA. For me the feeling that she is an opportunist in relationships is personal. She has been in the past.
ReplyDeleteShe reinvented herself when she got the job ion Suits. Created a beautiful facade.
Just watched the engagement video and it confirms to me that he is sexually enamored with her. She shared a tent with him in Africa after 2 drinks. Please don’t read that as slut shaming. Just with no knowledge assumed the relationship was based on lust and the Prince kind of confirmed it for me in he interview.
Looking forward to the body language experts take on her vice grip on his hand.
Lastly let me make this 100% clear. For me this is NOT about the color of her skin, but the lack of content in her character.
On a completely other note. I think it’s lovely for little girls of color to see themselves represented in a public family like this.
ReplyDeleteJust wish it wasn’t her.

ReplyDeleteI never realized she was a Deal or No Deal briefcase "model". The things you learn.

ReplyDeleteApologies if anyone has already said this, but I'm British & know a bit about this: Meghan will never be a Princess, but she will be a Duchess. You can only be a princess if you are born royal, not by marrying into a royal family. When Meghan and Harry marry, the Queen will give Harry a dukedom, so she will by default become a Duchess. If they have children, as they have been born into royalty, the children will be a Prince/Princess.
ReplyDelete@ delete account - Yes, it's a different culture, but sometimes a different language. I used to have an American boyfriend staying with me in the U.K. We went to a store and he asked the assistant where they keep 'Q Tips.' The assistant and I both looked at my bf blankly. Only later, that I said 'Aah, you meant cotton buds!'
ReplyDeleteRight, Sarah Ferguson was the problem. Let's just ignore the fact that Andrew's name is all over this very blog in connection with all kinds of sordid people and sordid activities. But, let's keep saying Sarah was the problem.
ReplyDeleteI have no problem with this relationship, but the reaction for the past year has been hilarious at times, sad and disgusting at others. She is a mixed race, Jewish, divorced American woman, plenty of fodder for the bigots and misogynists, and my favorite, the misogynist women. The conspiracy stories and accusations against this woman, based on seemingly thin air, rival those lobbed against Amelia Warner (Jamie Dornan), Sophie Hunter (Benedict Cumberbatch), FKA Twigs (Robert Pattison), Briana Jungwirth (Louis Tomlinson), and countless other women attached to male celebrities. Is there a secret playbook somewhere that women buy so that their internet comments follow a similar pattern?
Thanks for this post. Many have found a reason to dislike her by innuendo & supposition. I don't see her any different than any of the other females he dated. Many wanted that ring & title, but she gets the venom & it's not racial? Sure,Jan.
Delete@Kimberley, actually Meghan will automatically become a princess: HRH The Princess Henry of Wales. She just won't be a princess under her own name.
ReplyDeleteTheir children will not be HRH or prince/princess, but will be known instead as Lord or Lady (forename) Mountbatten-Windsor.
However the Queen could issue a new Letters Patent to change this - just as she did for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's children.
George was always entitled to be HRH Prince George of Cambridge as the eldest son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales. But without the Queen's intervention, Charlotte would have been Lady Charlotte Mounbatten-Windsor instead of HRH Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.
Em Lew, agree with 100% of your post.
ReplyDelete(and my occasional reminder that many of us who view this site on tablet or desktop platforms do not see threaded replies, but just a linear conversation).
@ Austin - Thanks for the info - I was making the distinction under her own name.
ReplyDeleteShe will not become a Duchess and her children will not be princes or princesses. I still doubt that this marriage will take place, but if it does she will have a very unfortunate accident or die of mysterious causes.
ReplyDeleteFact: she is not appropriate fodder, and she's a fool if she thinks that love can eclipse over a thousand years of tradition and symbolism that those people hold dear. What's fair or right is irrelevant. They will find a way to get rid of her, now or later. The reasons why are obvious.
As a Brit I thought she was lovely in her interview today. Just saying....
ReplyDelete@ Eff Yiew - Totally agree with you.
ReplyDelete@JohnDoe - You've said it more than once, but I still can't believe it: you keep calling a 36-year-old "middle aged"??? What is this, the 18th century??? What's next? 46 will be "old" and 60 will be "so ancient she should finally do the right thing and die"? LOL.
ReplyDeleteWow no one has said hello to Herrrr yet?
ReplyDeleteLadies and Gents Herrrr is the female equivalent to Himmmm. I'd be directing your questions herrrr way.
Aris: when Himmmmonamobile shows up, i'll be impressed.

ReplyDeleteI didn't assume Prince Dumbass was a complete twit, but then I heard his voice and the words that came out of his mouth. O_O The young lady is terrifically thirsty, he is terrifically needy...good luck with that.
ReplyDelete@John, came across a better photo of Diana's brother Earl Spencer.
ReplyDeleteHe clearly has red hair and a ruddy complexion.

@Mag and @Fifi, I LOVE that you do not consider 36 middle aged and you do not consider 46 old. Unfortunately, biology dictates otherwise. American life expectancy is 78 and world life expectancy is 72.
ReplyDeleteI am in my 40's and am very active and can be quite immature, but even I know I am definitely middle aged and closing in on old.
What a news day! First the royal romance and then the article in today's N Y Post entitled, Good Riddance Lena Dunham! Am I happy, or what?!!
ReplyDeleteTo anyone who thinks Harry is James Hewitt's kid, should double check the timeline of when Diana met James Hewitt. Apparently, Harry was 2 when Diana first met James. Also, Austin is right, Harry totally looks mostly like Earl Spencer. I would also recommend looking at pics of a young Prince Philip.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Harry gives 2 s--ts about protocol & has no interest in ever being King. Harry probably enjoys making the Queen, Charles & Camilla squirm. He is more like Diana & William is more duty-bound like his dad. The marriage might not last, but I think that there is genuine love & affection between them. If they split, it'll be for the same reasons any marriage fails--it's hard work & sometimes we fail. Charles initially married the girl that everyone wanted him to marry and look how that turned out. Harry might as well marry who he wants.
@Correy, agree re: unconscious bias & overt racism. They're different shades of the same color. I would also argue that that the failure to recognize UB allows overt racism to thrive. That's why we're still struggling with the effects of slavery & segregation in the US.
Here is a gross (and totally biased, racist) headline about Ms. Markle:
http://www.tatler.com/article/why-british-men-love-american-women-prince-harry-meghan-markle
@Nutty, will have to disagree with you about young Camilla being attractive. I just Googled pics of her & she looks better now.
ReplyDelete@Boo, yeay! I never understood the fascination with Lena Dunham. Maybe I'm too old, but tried to watch Girls & was kinda of grossed out. I was also very very confused.
Calm down, people. LOL. Its a gossip blog for heaven's sake. They needed to secure the bloodline ascension to the throne. If the next in line is getting up in age (as Charles is) then a younger heir is sured up and matched with a (pre) selected mate for marriage and breeding. The younger heir needs at least two kids (in case one should die) but more kids are preferred. William and Kate delivered the goods. The Firm is happy. The bloodline and the throne are secured.
ReplyDeleteAnd Will and Kate will continue to have children to make sure that Harry will be shut out from the throne. The Firm doesn't want him or any children that he may have to ascend to it. Everything that these people do is planned. Nothing happens by coincidence.
They got rid of Fergie and Diana and both of them came from way better lineage than this chick. For right now, neither her nor Harry are important. But they will get rid of her when they are ready. Give it time.
Interesting comments all around. Maybe I’m being overly optimistic, but I think these two will make it.
ReplyDelete@john doe - Harry looks like a combo of Prince Phillip and Princess Diana’s sister Lady Sarah (also red-haired).
Forgot that Diana's father and sister = red heads too.

Long time lurker here...maybe I'm being naive, but maybe they want to get married for love? I don't get all the scrutiny about Meghan. Harry is a 33 year old man...maybe he's ready to get married, maybe he really loves her? When I first met my now-husband, we never spent a day apart. Moved in together in 3 weeks and we've been married for almost 15 years now.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to them, however it works out.
ForSure, Meghan Markle is not Jewish. Her first husband is Jewish and they were married in a Jewish ceremony. My son was a student of her former mother-in law and she had spoken about the wedding plans at the time. Her father is Irish and her mother is African-American.
ReplyDeleteAh, thanks Lute fisk. I saw that headline earlier and couldn't find the info when I went back to look for it. Methinks a website erred and got cleaned up quickly.
ReplyDeleteForSure, I think there is a lot of confusion because of her first wedding. Here is an article with some more info: http://www.jpost.com/OMG/Is-Meghan-Markle-Jewish-515324
ReplyDeleteJohn Doe is spot on. BayAreaGirl, that timeline has been disputed by some and would be willfully obfuscated to benefit everyone involved. The heir of the throne could not be a cuckold in the modern age, although it would have probably pleased Diana greatly.
ReplyDelete@Correy, your refusal to accept that there could be any objections to Ms Markle but racial ones is naive. All royal wives have to run a gauntlet, and Meghan is no exception. Really, read up on what people said (and say) about Kate Middleton. It is vicious.
ReplyDeleteJames Hewitt is not Harry's dad.
ReplyDeleteugh...mark my words there is something really off about this relationship. He dated nothing but blondes for his whole life...then meets this mutt and falls in love instantly.....something is really strange about this. Odd how much she looks like Pippa Middleton. this stinks to high heaven....this will end badly.

MUTT!! how incredibly offensive, do you even know the meaning of the word. First time I have seen such blatant racism on here. In fact the only place I have seen it is on the redneck programmes that find their way over here.

ReplyDeleteI don't consider myself a "redneck" (I'm an educated professional from the East Coast), and I have honestly never thought of the term "mutt" as being racist. I grew up believing it was a term for someone with a background that consists of various ethnicities. For instance, here in the Boston area, if someone's ancestors are from Ireland, Italy and France, they may say they're a mutt. Is it considered racist to say this now?
ReplyDelete@Lucy "Mutt" isn't racist, Annie roo is just one of those people who are perpetually offended and looks to find it wherever they can. I'm from NYC and to me, mutt has always been to describe someone of low character, like a stray dog or mongrel. "Don't come near me again you f**king mutt or I'll smack the shit out of you!" Hell, I'm Italian, and I've said it to plenty of other Italians.
ReplyDeleteThe ironic thing is that "redneck" IS considered derogatory, so in Annie Roo's self righteousness, she actually is the racist one. Big surprise...Another Lena Dunham, she is. It's always the most self righteous who are the most racist, prejudiced, and bigoted.
Maybe Harry finally found what he wanted in Meghan because of the very fact she is quite the opposite of all those blondes he has dated.
ReplyDeleteI wish them well. I can’t imagine it will be easy marrying into the royal family and the scrutiny that comes with it.

ReplyDeleteJudging by the history of the British royal family, even with the recent changes (marrying commoners), she can't reasonably expect the level of celebrity that Kate enjoys
____________
Au contraire. Celebrity is based on popular demand. After watching Kate's staged and painfully delivered (overly rehearsed) "we are so happy for them" comment this morning, I suspect she is a tad jealous and bruised by how well Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan's engagement announcement and post-interview was received. She literally looked "underwhelmed". Contrary to Prince William and Kate, these two have a playful and relaxed rapport. Moreover, Meghan is much more comfortable out of the gate in front of the camera and she already has a ton of public speaking experience/easy-going and confident manner, than Kate did/does. I half wonder if Kate planned this pregnancy to take some of the wind out of the flurry of reporting around Prince Harry and Meghan's upcoming nuptials. Meow.

ReplyDeleteInstead of arguing about Meghan why don't the British people demand answers about Andrew and Epstien? Mountbatten and Savile? Nope....too busy being influenced by whether they 'like' the royals they have never met or not.

You have it! Distraction, distraction, distraction. There is so much distraction, whatever coast we're living on. It does make one wonder what [they] don't want us to "see"/learn about.

Fact: She is royalty! (They are distant cousins.) Therefore, “relevant”! Do you actually think a formal engagement announcement would happen, otherwise? Harry be getting some. And those 4AM wake-up calls are but a distant memory for Meghan. She is got herself an awesome gig, considering her conditioning.
Personally, I like her. Kate needs a little “jolt” in her morning coffee. She was getting a little to comfy. (Divide and conquer, right?)
A genealogical investigation by The Mail on Sunday reveals the couple are distant cousins – related through a late 15th Century ancestor of the Queen Mother.

ReplyDeleteI can spell. I'm just tired of having to "re-post"/"re-read umpteen times because of "errors".
I think it's important and relevant to note that nothing happens with The Establishment that is not planned to the nth degree. Seriously. These two are a planned diversion. What else, besides Kate's pregnancy and Donald Trump, is going on [they] don't want particular attention paid.

Harry won the lotto. He only has to "play" within their realm so much. He actually has a life. William, (and Charles) not so much.
I I used to believe Charles "abdicated" the throne when he married Camillia, just that we wouldn't know until the Queen died. That's until I found out that he had to be "widowed" to marry a divorcee to still inherit the thrown and be king. That little tidbit put a whole different slant on Princess Di's car "accident" for me.

ReplyDeleteDear lord.
FFS! Mutt is now considered a racist word?! Seriously? Everyone is offended by everything. When did we become a bunch of pearl clutching pansies?!
ReplyDeleteIf the word MUTT offends you, then you have serious issues or are looking to create issues in order to feel important.
I'm am so tired of having to walk on egg shells around the whole fucking world because everyone wants to be a victim!
Grow the fuck up, get a spine, stop acting like a baby and as if the world fucking owes you something. People have this offensive mentality bc it makes them feel important to cry foul and be a victim.
disclaimer: For the record, not speaking about real victims of tragic/traumatic abuse of any kind, but speaking to the pansies who are offended by every little thing in life.
@Glue
ReplyDeleteHave some perspective will you. The word mutt itself is not racist. A (racist) slur is considered racist when we consider the manner in which it was used and to whom it was directed.
When using the word "mutt", typically one is describing a mixed breed dog.
Meghan Merkle is of MIXED race. Referring to her as a "mutt" is not a compliment. It is a racist slur.
We are ALL mixed races!!! There isn't a single human being out there who is completely PURE BRED. I'm a mutt and you can call me that. I'm not offended. The fact that everyone is making every fucking word to be offensive. Get over yourselves. You (as in everyone who thinks it's "all about them") are not that fucking important.
ReplyDeleteI'm done. Can't argue w/ victim mentality. No matter what they will always play the boohoo victim card. /rolls eyes/
I married into the aristocracy 25 years ago. There's been much change over this period of time - for the better. Most of the "top families" I know welcome their children's partners (who are from less privilege and different race backgrounds) with open arms.
ReplyDeleteI am American with a lower middle class background and I encountered very few problems with the Upper Class. Meghan will be fine - but she needs to lose the hair extensions. Hair extensions are not posh!
Sure you did. MM is beautiful and has an adorable nose and I love seeing them happy. People who are mad now are going to be in for years of codependent heartache because they look genuinely happy and she's not going anywhere. I feel sorry for people who can't share their joy, or joy in general. Why choose to believe blinds and bitchy "friends?" pitiful
ReplyDeleteNothing wrong with hair extensions. smh
ReplyDeleteDear MicMac,
ReplyDeleteThe word "posh" is NEVER EVER used by the upper classes or the British aristocracy - unless we are mocking someone. It is a lower class vulgarism, i.e., "classy." Further, the aristocracy does NOT welcome interlopers who lack breeding or fortunes and never shall. If you were a member of our world, you would KNOW that word choice marks social distinction.
As for the American, she is outright loathed by every notable house in Britain for her brash manner and complete lack of all that is English.
Signed,
Debretts
