Blind Items Revealed #1

November 21, 2017

No groupons for this permanent A list rapper. He has been buying up seats to his own concerts by the thousands to at least have the numbers look good. The reality is that the numbers might look good but the number of empty seats is staggering.

  1. Didn’t you do that one already?

  2. They did but it wasn't officially revealed. Even though pretty much everyone guessed right!

  3. He was to play here in early December and completely canceled last week due to technical difficulties... said there wouldn't be enough time to have his entire stage set up in time for the concert and he didn't want to perform a half-ass show.

  4. I'm ready for his 15 minutes to be up. I guess I'm not the only one.

  6. I read lat night that he cancelled the lincoln nebraska for a number of reasons, his production was too big, not enough time...blah blah blah

  7. He cancelled a show in Lincoln, NE. Did his team really think he'd be playing to a packed audience in NEBRASKA?!

  8. He just had a concert in Toronto, Canada. They showed how many empty seats their were. It was a lot

  9. The one in Charlotte was jam packed and we waited two hours to get in. The production set up is complicated but it makes certain that there literally isn't a bad seat in the house. Charlotte, NC isn't Lincoln,NE but there were quite a few white people of ALL ages, including the 60 plus white man and his 30 plus son were bopping to damn near every song Jay-Z rapped.

  10. I admire the acts that go on anyway, let the people in the cheap seats come Down front. Let people who have waited for the Groupon discounts come, they are the real fans, JayZ just lost what's left of his audience.

  11. 20+ years of hits from a major act should = sold out arena tour. The fact that he isn't is shocking. Why are so many acts having trouble selling tickets? can't just be the economy because 30/40 yr olds have disposable income. Younger acts like kendrick and j cole had no trouble playing arenas and making $$$'s.

    1. I had way more money for concerts in my twenties compared to now, in my thirties. I used to not think twice about spending $50-80 on a concert ticket and regularly went to shows in the $20-40 price range. Now I'm lucky if I go to one or two shows a year and $40 is my absolute max. So to me it makes sense that younger acts can sell out arenas better, even if with less hits.

  12. @longtimereader -- IMHO, concert tickets have gotten too pricey and arena concerts are always crappy sound quality. I have the income, but I'm much picky about who I will see in an arena concert. U2, yes -- you're guaranteed a great show. Jay Z -- nope. Not worth it. He's too much hype and not enough substance.

My other theory is that the Internet era has killed long-term music fandom (at least for the bands who are pursuing top 40 fame). Because top 40 artists are only a collection of hit singles and not well crafted albums, there's no reason for someone to be loyal to them. The industry has devolved into short-term thinking, and fans have followed. I don't see Katy Perry or the like selling out arenas in 20 years.

  13. @seachica You're right about the internet killing long term fandom. I work in the music industry and have been warning people about this for ages but they refuse to listen.

Before the internet, you had to work to be a fan. If you wanted info, you had to dig for it or join their fan club. You met other fans at the gigs and cultivated friendships, sometimes sharing albums or information. If you wanted rare cuts or albums, you had to go to the basement of Tower Records and dig through dusty record crates looking for them. You invested time in the band and so you tended to stay loyal as a fan.

I warned people that this culture of giving everyone ALL information at a moment's notice was going to make it near impossible for a band to cultivate long term loyal fans. These days if you get a whiff of a band you like, you can go to their website or wiki article, read everyone's bios, review their entire recorded history, download rare versions or demos of songs. Hell, you can just go to youtube and download their videos for free. In a half hour you know everything there is to know about that band and then you move on, forming no bond.

It kind of fits today's mentality where people just let spotify run in the background. You ask them what they like and they say, "everything" when they really mean "I don't pay attention to anything enough to know what I like".

Why do you think the highest selling tours are the legacy acts? Because they're the last generation that was able to cultivate genuine fans.

  14. Looks like he's cancelling some shows, for a really lame ass reason.

  15. Maybe if he dropped his prices - he plays in Vancouver in December - I saw him with Kanye and Justin Timberlake. This was back when Kanye was not completely crazy and it was a good show! JT was super lack luster and didn’t perform dick in a box either... Pfft $80? For tickets! I cannot tell you how expensive it is to live in Vancouver and go to Concerts even at small venues!

  16. wise words @eff. also makes me think to the days anxiously awaiting world premiere video to see what a band looked like or purchasing an album and being able for the first time read lyrics..cueing up cassette tape to record hits off boom box. walking eight miles barefoot in snow Walkman clipped to hip

  17. A going broke rapper buys his own tix because he wants the numbers, but the cell videos show empty arenas...makes zero sense.

Starting TIDAL was the end of Jay-Z.

  18. Was wondering about his interview in the NYT today
