Today's Blind Items - She Sold Her Sister - Old Hollywood

The actress who is the star of this blind is foreign born and probably permanently A list. She spent enough time in front of our faces that she deserves it. Maybe A- list. Back when she was first starting out many many decades ago, the parts were small, but she had expensive tastes. I don't think that has changed one bit over the years. The main difference is that as she got more famous she could afford the expensive things. She had been in Hollywood for about a year and was making some money but wanted to make more. How to do so? Our actress had been hitting the casting couch but was not always seeing much return from that. She said that when she hit the casting couch she at least made sure she was going to get dinner out of it so she wouldn't starve. Our actress brought over to the States her barely legal sister. It was just going to be a gap type year for the sister. Well, it turns out the sister was being constantly approached by producers and directors and executives at parties. They all assumed she was an actress and were looking to play the same casting couch type game they enjoyed with her actress sister.

Our actress sister though had other plans. She started charging the men to have sex with her sister. When her sister tried to complain, the actress sister blackmailed her. No one is quite sure how. More than a couple people said that the sister had a baby in her mid teens and the actress sister threatened to tell all her friends back home in their native country. Anyway, for nine months, the actress sister sold her sister and made tens of thousands of dollars which was a ton of money. Our actress sent every last dime that came and had nothing left to show for selling her sister when her sister went home. Now, the very interesting part of all this is that the sold sister made an entire career based on those nine months and made far far more money than her actress sister because of it.

  1. I finally guessed one! Joan Collins and sister Jackie.

  2. I also think it's the Gabors

  3. I'm stumped but I'm actually digging the JC/JC guess.

Jackie made much more money as a famous novelist than Joan. Joan only caught up because of Dynasty. I can see Jackie using those nine months worth of exploits to write those scathing novels that were rumored to be factual stories of celebrities with the names changed.

  4. Yay, bedtime story again. Kind of "What ever happen to Baby Jane" situation.

  5. I believe there was once a BI reveal on here that the Gabors were well trained escorts pimped out by Mama Gabor. Also didn't all the sisters become actresses/celebrities in their own right?

  8. Not the Gabors. The youngest sister Eva was the first to come to America (1939). The middle sister, Zsa Zsa, came in 1941 and the eldest, Magda, came in 1946. So there was never a case of the older being here to pimp out the younger.

  9. Are the Collins sisters considered Old Hollywood though? I don't think its them and I'm sorry i don't have a guess!

  10. In 1955, at the age of 22, Joan Collins headed to Hollywood - Jackie would have been 16 or 17.

  11. Definitely sounds like the Collins sisters, though, I hate to believe this about Joan. She seems nice (before this) and she played Edith Keeler in my favorite episode of the original Star Trek - The City on the Edge of Forever. (She plays a do-gooder the stops the US from entering WWII and Hitler wins, changing the course of history for the worse.)

  12. Totes Joan Collins. Sister used her knowledge of wealth/ privilege and the price you pay to play to write her novels.

  13. So is the conclusion that she actually helped her sister by pimping her out??

  14. What about the Redraves sisters?

  15. I would have to go with the Collins sisters. An awful story.

  16. Joan Collins has also never made a secret about her casting couch exploits in her early career.

  17. I'm sure it's supposed to be the Collins sisters: according to herself, Jackie was getting up to all sorts, so the parents packed her off to her sister in Hollywood. Which is an "interesting" choice of location for a wild child.
Now whether the story is true is a different matter.

  19. Its been a long time since I read the book but who are the real life characters from Hollywood wives and Lucky?

  20. I almost named my dogs (who are RL sisters) after these 2, but i chose Olivia and Vivien Leigh instead. Olivia and Joan HATED one another and never made up before Joan passed. I love Olivia de Havilland, but this would totally explain why they could never make up. Mother pushed Olivia’s career and she was the favored daughter. These 2 were insanely jealous of one another and tens of thousand truly WAS a lot of money back then.

In the 60’s it was not a ton of money and while they fought, Joan and Jackie loved each other.

  21. The thing is Pink Palace the younger sister ended up making a tons more money than the older sister so you would need to know who was financially the more successful sister. Not sure Joan ever eclipsed her older sister on the screen.

I just googled the sisters and found this. I was fascinated w/GWTW as a child and I loved Hollywood Babylon. My parents were older, so they got me into the classics @ an early age. I used to have a ton of books that mentioned the Olivia v. Joan feud. I also did research again when the “girls” were named. Of course that was over 5 years ago...

I am rusty these days, but I also mis-read the blind. In 9 months, the younger sister made more money...made me think that she had a baby by someone rich and famous and he paid her off for life for keeping it a secret...BUT the blind says the sister went home - which does sound like Joan/Jackie. In those 9 months, she learned all she needed to know for all her future books...

Thousands of dollars were just “not that much” in Hollywood terms by the 60’s...

    Joan Fontaine got the first Oscar. She isn’t as well known as her sister, but even though I am not close to my crazy sisters, I still love them. These two however were a different story. Even if this isn’t the answer, I will always wonder what was the reason behind such extreme hatred that lasted well into their 90’s!! And I remember one of them saying that it would be a battle til their deaths and whomever lived longer would be the “ultimate winner.” I guess that means 101 year old Olivia won...{insert eyeroll}
