This former Housewife who has spawned several other celebrities recently got dumped by a boyfriend. Apparently every single day he would get a text message asking him to send money to her via Venmo. The requests were never less than $2500.
I doubt anyone here knows the answer but I wonder who is paying the taxes on all this. My understanding is that you can give anyone $10,000 per year without paying gift tax. At $2,500+ per day they would appear to be far in excess of that. Is the guy paying gift tax on the excess. If he is treating it as a loan doesn't the lady have to pay it back? Failing that doesn't the guy get to deduct a bad debt writeoff and the lady have to report income from forgiven debt? Is ENTY sending these reveals to the IRS and claiming the reward money?
It's $14,000 for 2017 before gift tax kicks in, though there are additional exclusions-- and sometimes you see these types working them (exclusions for medical expenses -- plastic surgery should not count -- gifts to "charities," which celebrities sometimes set up for themselves, etc).
Generally there has to be at least $2 million in taxes owed before even qualifying for the IRS whistleblower process. It's doubtful the total amount given to her is anywhere near that, much less the tax that would be owed.
