Your Turn

Last time you had food poisoning and what got you?

Never ever ever eat Jake Tapper's potato salad. I swear he leaves it in the glove compartment of his Mini Cooper until it turns ripe. And what comes out the other end is as green as the scallions he uses in it.

Sometime I can't tell if I was food poisoned or have the "stomach flu". (which I get a lot down here from the drinking water.) When we had the hurricane last year I was advised to fill up the tub with water for emergency and I've never see water as blue as that stuff was.?

I was in Seaside Heights NJ and ordered a pizza with mushrooms. I've never been so violently ill my whole life. To this day I can't eat a shroom.

2 years ago, I was freelancing in Pasadena and staying at a hotel in Burbank. Undercooked chicken. I thought I was going to die.

I have a sensitive stomach so I learned to avoid this situation as much as possible. I don't like leftovers. I know ultra fresh is impossible but I avoid foods that have been sitting out for long periods (Subway shops, buffets, etc.), no road side foods. I pray before cruise ship foods, and only bottled or well filtered water.

I've only had food poisoning once but it was truly epic. In 1997 a couple of friends got married in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. The day before I went on a road trip with the bride's sister and a friend to Guanajuato to see the Diego Rivera Museum. Afterwards we stopped off at a restaurant. The sister ordered something with cheese in it -- don't recall what -- but took a few bites and didn't like it. I tasted it and it tasted fine to me, so I ate it. Mistake.

By the time the bus finally got back to San Miguel I felt pretty crappy and went back to the hotel. Spent the rest of the evening and night and next morning puking and crapping with terrible diarrhea. To make matters worse, the weather was really hot and humid so I was really truly uncomfortable besides sick as a dog.

The next day I managed to stagger to the wedding where I threw up three times (thankfully made it to the BR) and then staggered back to my hotel. The reception, from what I heard afterwards, was fabulous, followed by an all-night tavern crawl from one end of the city to the other. I've seen the film of the wedding and believe it or not, I actually am green.

And the grand finale to all of that is that the next day I flew back to New York City. Made my way from San Miguel (beautiful city by the way) to Mexico City by bus, and then to the airport where I waited around for a couple of hours, and finally by plane bouncing up and down and up and down to New York. I didn't throw up on the plane but it was only because I had already puked my guts out completely and fully.

To this day I still regret missing that wedding.

Wondering what made you ask this question -- something disagree with you the other day?

How about the Thanksgiving my own mother gave me and only me — food poisoning? She knew how much I loved stuffing that she would send me off with my own casserole dish of stuffing. Toward the end of the evening, she scooped out the rest of the stuffing out of the turkey that had been sitting out for most of the day and placed it in the dish. Of course, I ate most of it before I went to bed. The next day, I was so sick, I know why infants and elder people could die from food poisoning. Fluids were coming out from every where. I was so weak and couldn't get back to my bed, I just reached up for a towel and went to sleep on the bathroom floor. My mom passed away 20 years ago and I give anything to taste her cooking again. Food poisoning and all.

I got food poisoning from a Jimmy John's once while I was visiting my friend in college. It was horrible and ruined my whole weekend. To this day, I can't eat there.

I have only myself to blame. Two years ago. Brooklyn.
P-- P--. After an incident that almost cost me my life back in the 60s with seafood, I never eat it in a restaurant. Ordered something non-fish. BFF ordered steamed muscles. I had some rice left over and asked if I could have some of her broth. Bad move. Next day we were both sick as dogs. Me only for a day. She was sick for four straight days because she ate it all.

  12. 6 years ago I got food poisoning from Fatburger along with 4 other people that I was with. We determined it was the fry grease because fries were the only thing that the 5 of us all ate.

I've never had food poisoning (knock wood), but my son has. He was so ill I had to take him to the emergency room. I've never seen someone vomit so violently. BTW, he had eaten at Chipotle. I will never eat there again.

I'm a Typhoid Mary (I had it once and turns out I was allergic to the better, higher-grade version of the typhoid drip and had to settle with the medication that leaves patients as typhoid carriers). So anytime I get too stressed out (like a fortnight before opening night of a play) I'll become very vulnerable to infection and anything I eat can trigger a relapse.

The last time I was hospitalised for paratyphoid syndromes, though, I fell in love with the dreamy Army Doctor who treated me (too bad he was married, I NEVER go after taken men). People think I never fall in love with Asian men, but it's only because I only ever fall in love with men (of any race) if they're at least as tall as my father/brothers (and local men rarely are). My head was swimming from that Army Doctor. When I was discharged, my mother said, "you do realise these men are trained to save people during times of war?" And I felt like my head exploded from being so turned-on by the idea/concept of a military doctor... Grrr! So inappropriate as he was obviously wearing a wedding ring. When I went for a follow-up check-up 4 days later and he said I was good and didn't need to come back in again for another check-up, a part of me died inside. LOL.

That being said, apart from that last hospitalisation, I find it hard to tell when I last had proper "food poisoning" because Sjögren's gives me IBS and I had stomach problems every day anyway. Meh. Shrugs.

  15. Twenty years ago, from The Keg in south Edmonton. THE KEG!!! It was horrible; I was out of control on both ends. I still eat there, but I will never go to that location again.

Brushed my teeth with the tap water in hotels in China. Didn't get violently ill, but I learned my lesson. Only use bottled water to rinse after brushing.
