This was going to be his time. For the first time, this show runner was going to get a show beyond season one. Fourth time a charm and all that. Honestly if they had not fired him before the first show even aired, I would have said they had a shot to make it to season 2. When he couldn’t get his personal issues under control though, they brought in someone else who changed the direction of this superhero network show and I would give it about 20% chance to get renewed for a second season.

Sucks. Powerless wadsa great little show. Basically, 30 Rock with superheroes, very funny. Sorry to see it go.

ReplyDeleteThis is why you need to leave personal issues at home--too many in Hollywood bring it to work and fuck up their opportunities in the process. No sympathy here. You're a showrunner. Either be professional or risk your idea being botched.
ReplyDeleteApparently the original pilot was a slightly darker take on the underlying premise. Rather than R&D, it was going to be an insurance company dealing with the fallout of living in a world where super beings routinely do battle and wreck up the joint. So, darker. In its current iteration, the lab guys were too unlikeable early on, and it killed the show for me.
ReplyDeleteI actually worked on this show. The creator didn't have personal problems that I was aware of - he's actually considered one of the nicest guys in t.v. - the problem everyone I knew said was that the network hated the show and wanted it to be funnier.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I heard from a writer on the staff that basically the show was fucked with by the network from beginning to end.
ReplyDeleteThe original premise of the show was kinda awesome. Then it aired, and it was nothing like that - also horribly unfunny, and entirely lacking in charm. Yep, it had a network exec's stamp all over it.

ReplyDeleteSo much talent in front of the camera on that show, and it was so bad. You really really have to blame the writing, whether that was due to network demands or not, that show should have been much better.
