I was young and one of the first 'kids' to have a phone, because my parents lived in another country and they were worried. I was 18, it was 1996, and it was a Nokia 'brick' phone. I was shocked when I went to study in LA in 1998, and very few people had mobile phones, everybody had pagers. Only 'important' people seems to have phones. Nobody had pagers in Europe, everyone had mobiles by then.
Guess my age-- 2 years ago. And I don't use it except as a backup to a landline I just use to let people leave me voice mails I can hear live and not answer.
About 16 or 15? Like Marlo, I was also one of the first in my class to have a mobile phone. It was a Nokia 3310 (Navy blue, but then I also got a metallic snow white cover too—I was addicted to playing "Snake" on that thing). I miss that phone a lot sometimes, but I feel like I'm not allowed to miss it because I donated it... ♥
Only about 3–4 other students had mobiles in my class (most of them were the Nokia 6310). I hid it in my uniform pocket because I didn't want any of the other kids to get jealous and hate me. Eventually, I decided to tell one classmate, because I thought I could trust her. I thought she'd be happy for me... But she got jealous and eventually turned on me. LOL, I have real adult problems now.
Lol. I remember those rudimentary games on Nokia. My first Nokia didn't even have games. But I had a cool banana Nokia later, that would keep me entertained during boring lectures.
Around 52. I always refused to have one but my wife finally insisted. Got a TracFone, the cheapest one I could get. When people ask me what kind of smartphone I have I tell them I don't have one, I have a dumbfone.
I see that y2k was a stepping in this website commenters to have a cellphone, because that age was when I was given my first at Christmas, also aged 22. I never wanted one, but it was a present, and if I had not internet in it, I would not care about mobiles today either.
It was around 25 - so 1996 maybe? My husband and I were both traveling extensively for work then, so we'd have very expensive arguments via two cellphones. We changed careers, downsized, and had kids after that. We were able to then bicker in person over new topics like whose turn it was to get up :-).
Early to mid-thirties, maybe. Sometime around '05 or '06. It was a basic black flip phone. After that I had a pink razr flip phone, which I loved, but it eventually stopped holding a charge.
I think I was 35 when I got my Nokia. I rarely used it and didn't want to be bothered with taking phone calls when I was out and about. (Actually, I still don't.) My older son had to wait until middle school to get his first phone. He was a bit salty when his 10 year old brother got one.
I love how people used to call that the "banana" phone (I thought only people who speak my local language called it that). Also, we'd get our phones confiscated if we got caught using them in class. ?
I got my first phone when I turned 16 because my mom didn't want me to drive without a phone. It was 2005 and it was a kyocera phantom and it had the game snake on it and I played it for hours lol.

ReplyDelete32 in 1990. It was a "car phone" and as far as I remember it could only plug into a car lighter jack, not a wall plug.
