Today's Blind Items - I Worked On A Yacht -Part One
** A few weeks ago I was talking to a long time friend. Her show had just been canceled and work prospects were looking a little grim for this season of shows. It was probably going to be a lot of guest starring roles rather than recurring and definitely no main roles. At some point we started talking about yachting and she admitted she has done it a couple of times to supplement her income. Early summer can be slow and she speaks French which makes things much easier. I asked her if she wanted to write about her experience. She agreed. I changed some of her descriptions to make them a little harder to guess but other than that, it is pretty much how she wrote it.**
I'm an actress. A generally out of work actress. If not for voice over work, things would be bleak right now. I had high hopes for this past year but the show I was starring on got canceled. It happens a lot. I was on a hit network show for a few years. Just a recurring role. It was a vicious back stabbing show. Oh, not for the guys, but for the women on the show. The women who were the original cast members were fiercely protective over their turf. Unless you were a female A lister just coming in for a week or two, they would do whatever they could to show you the door. I came in to it about halfway through the run of the show. Here I was, on this great show, but I was not guaranteed anything other than one episode at a time. The main cast were locked in. Whether they appeared in a certain week or not, they got paid. What also hurt me is that I couldn't get any other work just in case this show needed me. For a whole season I would wait by the phone. Meanwhile, I still had all my expenses and the money was quickly being drained from my account.
It was on the show that I started talking to another actress. While we waited for a scene to be set up, we would talk. A lot. Hours of free time gives you a lot of time to discuss things. Everything. It was not that long ago that I was working every week in a pretty good show and making quite a lot of money. i decided to buy a house. Then, the star of the show got tired of acting and just like that, the show ended and I was scrambling. I told her this story and she said I should think about heading to Europe for the summer. She had done it before. She didn't tell her boyfriend at the time who is now her husband about it. He thinks she was there to do some magazine shoots and promotional appearances for products.
The more she talked about it, the better it sounded. I have been on television since I was 10. In my home country, everyone knows me for a certain role I did when I was young. Throughout my teen years I worked a lot. Almost full-time. The jobs didn't pay as much as a network show, but things were good. At the time, you think things will always be great and you will work full time. So, I didn't save as much as I should. I was young and I thought the money would just keep rolling in.
It didn't. As I got a little older, the parts I landed were bigger and paid more, but they were more infrequent. I would get a network show and it would last for two years. The money was great for those two years but then it would get canceled and you would be looking for a job for the next year. By the time you landed the next show and got paid, most of the money you made in the last show was gone.
I'm not complaining. Just trying to explain. Each week you never know if your job will be lost. Will the show be canceled? Will the audience hate your character and you get fired? Will you ever get another job if you do get fired? I remember on my first movie, I thought I knew everything. I had been working for a decade and breezed into work, excited about this new challenge. I think it was day 3 on the movie when I was told I had to f**k the lead actor in the movie or I would lose my job. The thing is I had known this actor for a long time. Apparently he is the one who had me cast in the movie and now was payback time. I didn't know he cast me. I didn't know he liked me like that.
My network show I had been on just ended. I had nothing lined up but this movie and a crap movie someone talked me into doing. I needed this paycheck. I did it. I slept with the guy. I have hated him since. I have never seen anything he has done. He is a f**ker who took advantage of the situation. I had known him almost my whole life but he was willing to have me fired unless I had sex with him. On a side note, after filming I went to do a guest shot on a television show supposedly leading to recurring and the lead actor in that show said he heard from the actor I had sex with that I was good to go. I said I wasn't good to go and wouldn't have sex with the lead of the show. Instead of the recurring role I was promised, it was a one off thing. A week later they brought someone in who would have sex with the actor and she got the recurring role.
So, back to the present day. The actress I was talking to made it sound super easy and that she only had sex a few times with guys while yachting and that it was mostly partying and being arm candy. I asked her what I needed to do and she said she would introduce me to the person who could make it happen.
Tomorrow our actress goes yachting.
So foreign born actress being working since 10 years old. Does some voiceover and works on occasion. Hmmmmm this could be soooo many people.
ReplyDeleteThink we're looking at a Canadian child actress, that has worked with Ryan Reynolds.
ReplyDeleteOk, so someone French Canadian who started as a child on tv?
ReplyDeleteCould the back-stabby show be Desperate Housewives?
and she's from a foreign country, her 'home country'
ReplyDeletewhat would happen if one day all these guys get exposed?
ReplyDeleteyoud see the smoke from outerspace....
tomorrow seems like it could be essential reading. can't wait... :)
ReplyDeleteI need more information to even guess.
ReplyDelete(My guesses are always wrong.)
Maybe Alison Pill - Was a lead on ABC's The Family, started acting at age 10 in Canada. Did some animated stuff but a long time ago, worked on The Newsroom with Olivia Munn who would seem to have some tips on earning alternative cash.
ReplyDeleteJamie Luner
ReplyDeleteCredits include "Growing Pains", "Just the Ten of Us" and "Growing Pains".
I will consider "foreign born" has being a red herring.
The last one was supposed to be "Melrose Place"
ReplyDeleteLooks like she was 14 when she did her first movie, so scratch that.
ReplyDeleteEmmanuelle Chiriqui? Appeared in Waiting with RR. Has some voice work, but it was a few years ago.
ReplyDeleteI hate the men. I hope Enty outs the actors who wanted to use her.
ReplyDeleteAs a woman, I want that to happen to male actors too.
ReplyDeleteA**holes.
This does happen to men - casting couch is run by gays and straights. This is rape culture.
ReplyDelete+1 on outing the scumbags instead of the victims
ReplyDeleteAnd one more note - it happens to kids of both genders, Enty's had blinds about it over the years, hopefully some subjects are too sensitive to fictionalize or retcon. Elijah Wood had to recently apologize for even the most vague insinuations about the existence of an American Jimmy Savile type predator ring.
ReplyDeleteDoes Stephanie Corneliussen yacht? I would totally buy a yacht to buy her.
ReplyDeleteAgreed! What these men did was nothing less than sexual blackmail. I consider it abuse.
ReplyDeleteMy first thought was DH as well (I always figured Eva Longoria as a yachter). But the thing about her boyfriend at the time now being her husband seems to eliminate her and I can't think of anyone else of the show as a yachting candidate.
ReplyDeleteVanessa Lengies
ReplyDeleteShow that was recently cancelled: "Second Chance"/FOX
Was in "Waiting" with Reynolds- her first movie
Child actress in "Are You Afraid of the Dark"
Heigel for the actress on a hit show that got fired? Her boyfriend is now her husband. I don't know what show it was or if there were any foreign actresses who worked as teens.
ReplyDeleteBackstabby show "Glee"
ReplyDeleteNow-married actress who did the yachting- Naya Rivera
Elisha Cuthbert. She was on a popular science kids show here in Canada.
ReplyDeleteHave no idea but acting sounds like the worst job. Get to work with shady self absorbed people in a rape culture environment. No wonder most are drugged out messes. With that said, looking forward to part 2.....
ReplyDeletepbxpbx - very good guess! She is Canadian, starred in 2005 movie with Chris Noth and in 2006 with Jeff Bridges. Hope the *sshole wasn't Bridges.
ReplyDeleteVanessa Lengies is a brilliant guess
ReplyDeleteDing ding ding!
ReplyDeleteI'd go with Heather Morris though for the now-married actress.
ReplyDeleteAm i missing something about ryan reynolds being some kind of predatory creep? Even though he's not the best actor, he always seemed way too good for Fake Lively and like he could be a good guy underneath all the snark...
ReplyDeleteWhat about Melissa George..........she was on an Aussie soap as a kid...guested on Friends and Grey's (the protective actresses) and was a regular on season one of In Treatment and another show...Hunted I think....She lived in Paris for a while????
ReplyDelete"As a bitter woman, I want that to happen to male actors too."
ReplyDeleteFTFY.
Hard for there to be a rape culture without any.. yaknow..raping taking place in the story.
ReplyDeleteBottom line: Hollywood (show business) is a sewer.
ReplyDeleteClaudia Black? She does tons of voiceover work, just had Containment canceled, and was recurring on The Originals. Also, is Australian.
ReplyDeleteEntry basically revealed this actress works for Ryan Murphy so Naya Rivera (Glee)
ReplyDeleteseems the best guess so far.
Shoo I thought that was an excellent guess.
ReplyDeleteHappens to the boys all the time too. RIP, Corey Haim.
ReplyDelete"Giving in under threat of blackmail" does NOT equal consent.
ReplyDeleteBest movie for Ryan Reynolds:waiting, basically playing himself.ha.
ReplyDeletewhat about Laura Harris? She was on a bunch of shows and was on that canadian show 15 with ryan reynolds?
ReplyDeleteI believe pdxpdx has it and this story says that after filming movie, did guest spot on show that was supposed to be recurring but because lead actor didn't get what he wanted from actress wasn't,according to Wikipedia that actor probably was David spade.sounds about right.ha.show:"8 simple rules".actress was on 2005 episode.
ReplyDeletepeople should record the propositioning and hit upload.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great topic, and kudos to Enty to let the actress tell it in her own words, as to why an actress would get into this. Very interesting!
ReplyDeleteWomen in Hollywood have the ability to make their own movies, their own TV shows, their own studios and production companies. Then they can make the men sleep with them to get roles!
ReplyDeleteIts unprovable unless the actress has irrefutable proof. Without that, Enty would be publishing libel and slander. A court order would penetrate the anonymity of this site.
ReplyDelete.
And that is the best case scenario. Enty has alluded to some bad stuff. If he starts naming names, some very bad, very powerful people (none of whom work in the entertainment industry) would kill him. I'm not kidding or exaggerating. Enty's body would never turn up.
Actress: Karine Vanasse---- french/canadian
ReplyDeleteCancelled show: Pan AM
Hit Network Show: Revenge
Actress Yacht Girl: Ashley Madekwe
Then Bf Now Husband Actor. Iddo Goldberg
Abuser Actor: Owen wilson---- while shooting midnight in paris
Here is the biggest problem I have with this story: This girl needs to fire her agent/manager, or whoever was telling her she couldn't take other work while recurring on this show. FALSE. They can't hold you if they aren't paying you. If you book something and then a day or two or whatever later, this show you recur on (depending on whether or not you have been written into this script or that) calls and says you're in the next script, you don't owe them anything. You are not under contract with them. If they really want you in the episode, tell them to work around your conflicts, negotiate a higher rate, or make you a guarantee. The only way they can prevent you from taking other work is if they either make you a series regular, or guarantee you a certain number of episodes as a recurring. NO. NO. NO. FIRE YOUR AGENT. I recur on a network show. Hell no am I going to sit around waiting for the phone to ring. When I book something else and they call to pin me or put me on hold, I say, "Ok. Great. Here are my dates on this other show I am doing. You guys figure out the conflicts and someone just tell me when and where to show up."
ReplyDeleteWaiting & Adventureland....
ReplyDeletejust being himself w/ a payment...
Actress:
ReplyDeleteVanessa Lengies: Canadian from Quebec (speaks French), on Popular Mechanics for kids, guest starred on Glee, was on a show called Mixology that was just cancelled in May 2016 and was in Waiting with Ryan Reynolds.
Most talent stick with the agent manager they are first signed with because it is so hard to get an agent in the first place.
ReplyDeleteFire an agent and you could be without another agent forever.
The top agents won't sign talent unless they can prove to that agent they can make them money.
So sad.
What about getting a "real" job when times are tough? I guess she has to live in the lifestyle that she's accustomed to meh.....smh
ReplyDeleteThey get onto boats wearing small tight dresses, or Bikini's. And no phones. You know they get searched before hand. If one of those women pulled out a phone, it would be quickly taken (and you know signal jammers are employed on these boats during the festivities. While intel agencies probably have small enough devices to circumvent the security measures, models don't.
ReplyDeleteBut if you recur on a good show, like Glee (or, ok, a successful show), you hope it turns into a regular role for which you stick for 100 eps, at which point you are set for life. Maybe not FU money, but enough to live modestly for many decades. This lets you supplement with lesser roles or to hold out for a good one.
ReplyDelete.
I mean, if you were recurring on Glee, and Big Bang offers you a recurring arc, you take it. Or if its a smaller role that fits into scheduling on Glee for some no name thing, you take that. But you don't leave Glee, even as a recurring role, for some sharty indie pic or low paying cable guest role. Charlie is correct. An actress in a recurring role CAN leave to do other things, but, from a practical POV, it doesn't make sense. If you are doing recurring roles, you probably aren't super successful, and sort of have to take what you can get.
This is when opportunity costs come into play. If you have a real job, like being a waiter or receptionist (with seemingly no college degree, what else could she get?), you have to be on a schedule. You can't easily get off time to go wherever to shoot a guest spot, much less the very unpredictable casting calls. Is making 10-25 dollars an hour worth missing out on even 1-2 roles? No. It isn't. Also, if this is Lengies, she couldn't do this. While she's not super famous, she's a b list level of famous in LA. She would be recognized, and humiliated, if she did one of these menial jobs.
ReplyDelete.
Further, I think a lot of people don't realize the maintenance costs associated with acting/modeling. The food costs are high. They don't eat much, granted, but what they do eat is very high dollar food. Further, the yoga and exercise classes they must attend to maintain their looks can easily run to the 500$ PER CLASS. Now, many of these less wealthy actresses probably hit the cheaper group classes, but they still run 20-50 dollars per class, and they have to hit 4+ of these per week. Next, factor in skin, nail, and hair maintenance and you are talking even more money. Its not that these actresses are living the high life. Granted, they are living upper middle class lives, but much of their take home money goes right out the door for maintenance costs. That is why A list actresses don't yacht. If you take home 500K, after agent and taxes, you don't have too make extra money. If you take home less than this, making a quick 25K or more for a week makes sense. Even after taxes, that 25K pays for a lot of yoga/spin/juices.
+1 Makes sense to me.
ReplyDeleteYeah,that's right.ha.
