Blind Items Revealed #3 - Old Hollywood

January 5, 2016

This actress married one of the greatest screen legends of Old Hollywood. The blind is not about her relationship with him though, it is about her relationship with a permanent A list actor who is an Academy Award winner/nominee. He wanted to marry the actress but his mom said no because the mom only wanted him to marry someone white. The actress in question was extremely jealous of her actor boyfriend. She once tried to shoot him as he boarded a train to go film a movie because he would not take her along. On another set she got into a fistfight with a permanent A list actress because she was getting too friendly with the actor.

Actress: Lupe Vélez
Screen Legend: Johnny Weissmuller ("Tarzan")
A list actor: Gary Cooper
Fistfight with A list actress: Marlene Dietrich

I probably would've gotten into a fistfight with the racist mother. You have to nip things in the bud with the in laws.

Lupe is enjoying a current run on TCM.
I can't stand to hear or see her, but she's there.
Look for listings that include the words "Mexican" "South of the Boarder", blah blah blah.
If you can sit through more than one feature of her campy caterwauling, you're a better man than I am.

Every time I hear her voice, the only thing I can think of is her repetitive yowling "Den-nis!"" and "Oh, Uncle Matt!"
    I just can't.

Times have changed. My maternal grandmother didn't want any of her 10 kids to date redheads because she didn't want redheaded grandchildren. This was in the 30's and 40's. She never said a derogatory thing about any race, though.

I would've flirted with him, just to piss her off.

The mother may have been a racist, but a person who tries to shoot you because you do not take her on a work journey, or gets into fistfights because of jelousy perhaps is not the best human to share a life with.

Also, who want to be with a man couldn't live his own life without his mommy's permission?

Granny should have taken a genetics course, since the redhead gene has to come from both parents. That's why it's recessive and very rare.

No one wants a man like that but maybe Gary just hid behind his mama because he knew Lupe was nuttier than squirrel shit and might shoot at him again. Who knows if any of this is valid

Unfortunately racism was the norm back then and Lupe had the reputation of being a loose cannon. Taking her own life a few years later really reinforced the unfortunate spitfire stereotype.

    She was obviously mentally ill.

  16. According to her Wikipedia page, she once chased him with a knife and slashed him so bad, that he needed stitches.

There weren't many genetics courses available in the thirties and forties for farm wives in rural Minnesota.

  18. Lol good luck with that. There's still a lot of racists out here. I'd disown my children if they dated or married a non-white. Nobody is obligated to celebrate the destruction of their genetics. Anyone looking to fight me would end up ventilated so I welcome all attempts :) Nothing is sadder than being that old white cuck grandparent pushing around the nappy haired future felon in the stroller. The kid always hates the white side despite them raising and loving the unfortunate abomination...no thanks. Yes I'm a "baaaad evil racist" blah blah blah and proud of it :)
