Blind Item #11 - Old Hollywood
The mother of this A/A+ list movie actress who died too young lived her entire life off the money she was paid by her daughter's first husband who wanted to marry the underage actress and was willing to pay a lot and did.
Natalie Wood
ReplyDeleteRichard Gregson the hubby
ReplyDeleteJean Harlow/William Powell? but they didnt marry but were engaged
ReplyDeleteJean Harlow/Charles McGrew
ReplyDeleteJean Harlow? (married in teens) Rita Hayworth?
ReplyDeleteMonroe was 16 when she first got married, but it wasn't to a rich guy and her mother was institutionalized. So, yeah...I don't have a point.
ReplyDeleteHe was her second husband
ReplyDeleteDid he have money?
ReplyDeleteHayworth was 19 when she got married. IDK if that was legal w/o parental permission, but probably was.
ReplyDeleteVeronica Lake married at 18 to an art director/set designer. Her mother lived until 1992.
ReplyDeleteVeronica died in 1973.
Robert Wagner was Wood's 1st husband - according to the records, she was 19 when they married. He was 27.
ReplyDeleteI would say Elizabeth Taylor and Nicky Hilton if I didn't have concerns about the "died too young". None of the names mentioned makes sense. Natalie Wood first married Robert Wagner and Natalie ended up financially supporting her mother - so hardly set for her entire life. Jean Harlow's first marriage was to a reasonably well to do family. However, Harlow also had to financially support her mother (apparently Jean's step father was a spender). Rita Hayworth and Marilyn Monroe didn't marry rich first husbands.
ReplyDeleteThx @Salaam:) I had forgotten he married her first- then again after Gregson....thought the marriages were successive . Then maybe Wood/Wagner .Her mother Maria definitely seemed capable as she pimped her out, but dunno if 19 is the age reference ,though still a teen technically
ReplyDeleteHarlow's 1st husband, Charles McGrew, was an extremely successful bond broker. She was 16 when they married, and required parental consent. I think this is it.
ReplyDeleteNP, Tricia. I've had a thing for Robert Wagner for most of my life, so I kinda recall his history :)
ReplyDeleteexactly
ReplyDeleteJayne Mansfield an A/A+? She also married her 1st husband at 16/17.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like Jean Harlow and her pushy stage mother. Jean's last husband, Paul Bern, was found dead of a gunshot wound a few months after they married. All kinds of money changed hands in all directions to make the murder look like suicide. After Jean died of a phony illness, her mother was taken care of for the rest of her life. Rumors were Bern beat Harlow within an inch of her life and ruptured an organ which became infected and led to her death. This kind of cover-up couldn't happen today. The Internet is all-knowing. As an aside, we are back to September/October of last year with the gossip sites reporting Khloe is now frightened enough by Lamar's 'threats' she is considering an Order of Protection. Remember that from last year? History repeating itself.
ReplyDeleteJean Harlow is probably right, but even though the internet is all knowing, money talks. Besides that ,many murders of ordinary people go unsolved everyday.
ReplyDeleteThe operative word in your comment is 'ordinary people.' We're talking about the biggest star in Hollywood at the time. Her eras Marilyn. A death/suicide like Marilyn's could not be covered up today regardless of the money involved. I think we learned our lesson through Marilyn Monroe never to be taken as a patsy again.
ReplyDeletegood catch Loopy!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sandy! *blushing*
ReplyDeleteI thought Jean Harlow died due to complications from a back street abortion?
ReplyDeleteThe story over these many decades has been that she died of uremic poisoning causing her kidneys to fail. Allegedly, she had been beaten up by Bern and did not have the injuries treated because of the bad publicity it would cause. The man she was dating at the time was not a sexual partner. If she was pregnant and had an abortion it was not his child. We will never know what killed her. She was adorable and had incredible comic timing. A big loss to Hollywood.
ReplyDeleteI aleays wondered why Jean died so young and would watch her movies while growing up. You have some really interesting comments and look forward to more.☺
