Today's Blind Items - One Too Many Casting Couches
A lot of my e-mails ask me whatever happened to so and so. Most of the time their career just ended. Nothing else. They had their time or their one shot and just could never get back into it. Sometimes though, there are really good reasons why someone walked away. This is one of those times. This person was America's Sweetheart. Yeah, not Meg Ryan or Julia Roberts. Nope. She was on network television and for weeks the entire country sat riveted and we all fell in love with her. So, Hollywood does what they do and gave her a movie. A crap movie, but a movie. It made some money and it led to other job offers for her. A lot of job offers. She literally had millions of dollars worth of offers at one point. While she was deciding her next move, she took some meetings. Apparently at each one of these meetings, producers or managers or whatever would try and sleep with her. This is not what she signed up for. There was going to be no casting couch for her. She didn't need the industry or the limelight or to be famous. If it happened, then that was great, but no way was she going to do the casting couch thing. So, she waited and waited. She landed a pretty decent guest starring role on a very hit network show. She didn't have to sleep with anyone to get the spot, but while she was on the show, the A list tool star of the show who still has an almost A list career tried to sleep with her. He hit on her right after he kissed his supposed girlfriend goodbye after having sex with her in his trailer. That was pretty much the last straw for her. Oh, except for the producer of the show who also hit on her. America's Sweetheart tried to do the behind the camera thing, but that was even worse. She walked away and twice turned down $1M offers to come back to where it all started. She made the clean break and just had no interest in going back to it again.
Part of this sounds like Kelly Clarksen but probably not her.
ReplyDeleteThis is a good one but I hate when Enty goes vague on us. We have no time frame so this could be a slew of young actresses since the beginning of TV.
ReplyDeleteI immediately thought of our USA Figure skaters & gymnasts---
ReplyDeleteI was going aaaaalllll the way back to Linda Day George in Roots.
ReplyDeleteI take what Enty writes too literally - "for weeks the entire country sat riveted.." could only have been Roots.
But Enty wasn't born yet, so no.
at the Olympics of course... ya know the broken foot on the gymnast...the Hamill Camel...Nancy Kerrigan after Tanyagate...
ReplyDeleteOh wow I wasn't even thinking that way I was thinking childhood actresses with memorable characters. Now that makes who ever this is an even larger pool to pick from.
ReplyDeleteI still think Kerrigan was in on it. "Why, why, why?!" after being clubbed in the leg seemed a little rehearsed to me. ¯\_( ͠° ͟Ê– °͠ )_/¯
ReplyDeleteBut I'm insane.
I think this is America Ferrera......show being "Ugly Betty." Hasn't really done all that much since then.
ReplyDeleteWas the whole country riveted?
ReplyDeleteOT; Looking through Star Search contestants and am surprised how many famous people now were on that shit.
ReplyDeleteThis shows our age difference--- I think Rachel Ward in "The Thornbirds" or Susan Blakely in : "Rich Man Poor Man"...heheheh
ReplyDeleteI was going waayyy back to Susan Dey, Nancy McKeon, Kristy McNichols, Punky Brewster, Staci Keagan pretty much every child star actress.
ReplyDeleteIKR??? i forgot who i looked up--someone really well known..& she/he had started on Star Search and lost early on...
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking something like "Who Shot JR"? Dallas was before me though. One of those big TV events that everyone watched, when there were only 3 channels.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't even read the whole blind thru when I blurted out my 1st thoughts--just was thinking "America's sweetheart" & "riveted to our TVs for weeks...
ReplyDeleteI shall now do so..
same!!! she seems like a really sweet girl not a casting couch hoe with zero talent like Lawrence and co
ReplyDeleteLongtime lurker, first time poster. How about Mary Lou Retton in the Olympics? It seems like she did a tv show or movie.
ReplyDeleteI tend to do that...especially with the 'entire country riveted' thing....that just doesn't happen any more.
ReplyDeleteBut I'm sure Enty's definition of "entire country" is different from mine, much like his definition of "ever".
I'm with ya, but no one on Dallas was considered America's Sweetheart.
ReplyDeleteI would never had thought most of the people on that list were on that show and LOST, just were contestants. Drew Carey, Dave Chappelle people like that, Kelly Rowland, LeAnn Rimes etc.
ReplyDeleteWelcome!
ReplyDeleteJust noticed another important clue: "She walked away and twice turned down $1M offers to come back to where it all started."
ReplyDeleteWhat mini-series had a sequel??
Colleen Haskell from Survivor? starred in "The Animal" and appeared on "That 70s Show" post-game, and never returned to the game despite many other less memorable contestants doing so
ReplyDeleteHey @ April! : )... yeah i'm thinking that way too...didn't Mary lou do broadcasting for later Olympics & stuff...
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of....remember Nadia Comenichi against Olga Korbut...and Olga's arched back when she was done??
I didn't mean if YOU remembered @ April...it was a general question...really young memories..
ReplyDeleteBTW, I like these kind of Blinds Enty, !!
How about Loreta Swit from M*A*S*H? I know they wanted to make a remake a few years ago
ReplyDelete"The Thornbirds--The Missing Years"
ReplyDeleteI WAS glued to "The Thornbirds" if ya couldn't tell from my above response!..GLUED!
THAT'S what I mean!!! ooooh @ Sandy, i think it just may've been LeAnn Rimes who i was trying to remember...and shocked she LOST..
ReplyDeleteI thought the same. What about Charlene Tilton?
ReplyDeleteShe's a good guess! I looked up her IMDB and she's worked pretty steadily, though.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking of Sydney Penny (Young Meggie) from The Thornbirds, too.
This is a great guess and fits perfectly. I was in college when the first season wrapped airing and every dude loved her, having sat riveted for weeks, as one would do with a reality competition show when they were new and novel, not like now when they're a dime a dozen of dreck.
ReplyDeleteI am going to guess Nancy Kerrigan.
ReplyDeleteThink you're right on the money here. Wikipedia says she was briefly a producer for a talk show in 2003 before leaving the industry altogether.
ReplyDeleteOhhh yeeaaah..i remember her face--she was watched by alot of people(esp.da guys)..didn't remember her name at all though..she WAS cute & pixie like-
ReplyDelete@survivor, excellent !! +1 to you..
I think we can presume the A list tool was Ashton Kutcher.
ReplyDeleteTotally Dude!
ReplyDeleteColeen Haskell - great guess. "The A list tool star of the show who still has an almost A list career" is a great fit for AK.
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely leaning toward the "non-actress" guesses, because it stated that she didn't care if she became famous or not. I can't think of any actress that would walk away from fame so quickly.
ReplyDeleteI'm throwing my hat in with the Nancy Kerrigan guesses. Mary Lou Retton, as cute as she was, doesn't strike me as someone who would inspire actors to cheat on their girlfriends.
I had to google Colleen, but as soon as her face came up, I knew it was the right answer. And Enty ALWAYS calls Ashton a tool. Good job! This was a fun one.
ReplyDeleteGreat guess! I forgot all about her, but after seeing her picture I remember loving her on Survivor. She was adorable.
ReplyDeleteActually, I've been going backward through the posts today (way behind on my reading) and just saw this in an Enty post from yesterday:
ReplyDelete"Remember back in the day when Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood won American Idol? I mean Kelly got a starring role in a wide release movie after she won"
Sounds like you may have gotten it right out of the gate!
Mary Lou Retton. She was actually referred to as "America's Sweetheart". "Weeks" suggests not an actress, but an Olympic athlete. She did a few cameo's in movie's ("Scrooged") and even had a Saturday morning kids fitness show for a while. Then she was a guest commentator for gymnastics in the next Olympics, this could mean "where it all started". She got married and had four kids and made good money doing motivational lecture tours. Super religious evangelical type, I can believe her turning down all sex offers.
ReplyDeleteI just feel like this is Dorothy Hamill. Searching IMDB doesn't really fit the clues. Maybe the $1mm offer had to do with a return to the ice? Not sure what she does now, remember she was on DWTS awhile back. She was the definition of "America's Sweetheart" during her Olympics, and the "few weeks" fits that timeframe
ReplyDelete..meaning I'm probably totally off-base and I was...after reading the BI thru my thought didn't work/make sense.
ReplyDelete-@ survivor totally got this!
Colleen Haskell is a perfect fit.
ReplyDeleteMega TV series is Survivor. Check.
Bad movie is "The Animal". Check.
Hit TV series is "That 70s Show". Check.
I'm thinking Marlo Thomas.
ReplyDeleteNot Kelly Clarkson. She still performs and is in the entertainment business. Never did BTS stuff. Not America Ferrera. She has a new TV show on NBC & 2 movies in pre-production
ReplyDeleteWondering if it's any of the Twin Peaks girls - with the reboot & all. Sheryl Lee or Sherilyn Fenn.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely Colleen Haskell. Kudos to the person who guessed it about. Just read a Wiki that she was the first Survivor sweetheart and has turned down Survivor return twice. The crappy movie is The Animal and the first rate tool star of the show is Ashton Kushner when she guested on that 70's show.
ReplyDeleteWith the Survivor finale tonight it's a nice tie-in. Clues fit…it's a good guess.
ReplyDeleteColleen Haskell was so adorable.
ReplyDeleteI immediately thought of Colleen Haskell from Survivor
ReplyDeleteExcept she has a new show on NBC "Superstore" which she's also a producer on. Hardly sounds like she's walked away.
ReplyDeleteShawn Johnson
ReplyDeleteThat is a GREAT guess. I think you got this one.
ReplyDeleteMelissa Joan Heart?
