This permanent A list mostly movie actress who is an Academy Award winner has been calling in every favor from journalists to make sure in the reviews of her new movie they tout her as someone who should be nominated this year. She feels like in her last chance, the studio screwed things over so she is taking matters in her own hands now.
Julia Roberts
Why does she feel as if this is her last chance? She's Julia Roberts.
ReplyDeleteJealousy might make her explode?
ReplyDelete"Calling in favors" means she did something nice for someone at one point in time.
ReplyDeleteDon't believe it.
Maybe "buying favors" would work?
Too bad the movie's been getting mixed to lousy reviews and so has her performance.
ReplyDeleteI dont even know what her newest movie is so yes I guess she is not as revelant now as she used to be lol.
ReplyDelete@Ay: Cause she was never very good to begin with, her rise to dominance was sort of a fluke, her star was already on the wane by 2000, and in her last major Oscar-bait headline gig, she was paid a bank-breaking $25 mil for a movie that tanked critically and barely broke even financially?
ReplyDeleteHer time was over fifteen years ago. She never had the talent to age into being one of the Grand Dames of Hollywood.
She hasn't deserved any nomination or win she's ever gotten. Why should now be any different?
ReplyDeleteAlso, she maybe has permanent A list recognition. But she is no A list actor, not by any means.

ReplyDeleteShe's a horrible, mean spirited person. Everyone knows that. She's also the most overrated actresses ever, including JLaw.
Eric is the A++ lister in that family.
ReplyDeleteShe had a hit film in 1990 and opened a film in 2015. She's already cemented. It's natural for an actor to lose relevance over the course of 25 years.
ReplyDeleteJulia Roberts, movie is Secret In Their Eyes
ReplyDeleteShe already won one, she can sit down.
@Ay: She opened a critical and financial flop in 2015. Z-grade comic-con pseudo-celebrities do that. Hell, they do better - at least their direct-to-video drek is profitable, if on a very small scale. Roberts hasn't had a hit star vehicle in fifteen years. "August: Osage County"? Critical flop, financially unimpressive. "Eat Pray Love"? Critical flop, modest financial success. And, as mentioned, "The Secret in Their Eyes" shit the bed entirely. She hasn't had any genuinely successful headline movie in over a decade. She's finished unless she can stage a comeback, and her personality is too toxic for anyone to want to help her with that. And while yes, it's natural for actors and, sadly, especially actresses to lose relevance, Roberts was the highest paid ever actress in 2003, and she sure as hell thinks of herself as an enduring institution. She's obviously hoping that she'll be the next Faye Dunaway or Glenn Close, a powerhouse elder stateswoman of the film industry. It's never going to happen.
ReplyDeleteI applaud your post, DoctorMaybe. Very well stated.
ReplyDeleteHer Oscar win was ridiculous. She was fine but not award worthy. Her PR machine worked overtime & made it a foregone conclusion that she would win. I guess the voters got sucked into that. Seeing both, I felt Ellen Burstyn should've won that year.
ReplyDeleteI would say Julia Roberts' time has come and gone.
ReplyDeleteI like some of her movies but haven't seen the latest. Julia did a very good job in The Normal Heart, imo. I'm always a little surprised about the competitiveness, especially with more $ than they'll ever spend and after years in the business.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand why producers keep hiring her.
ReplyDeleteThe movies that HAVE succeeded have succeeded IN SPITE OF her, not because of her.
Pretty Woman was a great vehicle. It would have been a fantastic movie if someone actually . . . pretty . . . had been in it.
Hollywood is full of questionable casting. Case in point, Adam Driver in his current Star Wars role.
ReplyDeleteAre you forgetting Erin Fucking Brockovich? She was fantastic, Terms of Endearment? Fried Green Tomatoes? Gimme a break...okay the one with the hunchback or Frankenstein, werewolf thing...that was a huge stinker...but Erin fing Brockovich? Stop it right now.
ReplyDeleteI loved August Osage County, fuck the critics.
ReplyDeleteBut she wasn't in Terms of Endearment or Fried Green Tomatoes....
ReplyDeleteJRo wasn't in terms of endearment . I think you mean Steel magnolias.
ReplyDeleteFried green tomatoes no not JRO . You might be thinking of something to talk about with Dennis quaid
Oh pelican breif??
ReplyDeleteI think you meant pelican brief
I agree, it was always Eric that had all the talent in that family, and she blacklisted her own brother. Who does that? She is not A list actress, but she is A list celebrity for some odd reason.
ReplyDeleteI think she meant "Mary Reilly," with JRo and John Malkovich, in which Julia played Dr. Jeckyll's housekeeper.
ReplyDeleteIts one where she makes herself look extra ugly and talks different. Typical old actress oscar bait that seldom works.
ReplyDeleteCheck out Emo Kylo Ren on Twitter
ReplyDelete@KyloR3n
Hilarious! Adam Driver is the perfect Emo Kylo!!!
I read it like that too, but I think they mean the last time she thinks she should have been nominated, the studio messed up, so this time she's doing it herself.
ReplyDeleteJulia Roberts has been in some incredible films. They were not great BECAUSE OF her, rather they were great IN SPITE OF her.
ReplyDeleteThere is a lot more that goes into a film than the lead.
Wow. I never thought people would actually call Julia Roberts an "A-list celebrity", like she's a Kardashian or something. She's the epitome of a MOVIE STAR. Her Oscar for Erin Brockovich was very much deserved. It was a powerful and vulnerable performance that truly has stood the test of time.
ReplyDeleteVery few people get the chance to play a lead in one iconic film, and she's done it multiple times. That's because she's talented and has "it". She may never play Lady Macbeth, but she is magnetic on screen, and as long as she wants to act, she will be able to open a movie.
Amen.
ReplyDeleteI'd rather watch a domino championship than a JR movie.
Finally someone who is not drinking the haterade.
ReplyDeleteTo each their own. I thought he was a bad actor on Girls, and am really surprised that out of all the young actors in Hollywood, they didn't hire someone who was an adequate actor ot was even nice enough looking to pass as the fictional son of two charactera played by attractive actors.
ReplyDelete+1000
ReplyDeleteLove Eric Roberts, great unsung actor
Emo Kylo on twitter is a parody mocking Adam Driver's Kylo Ren. Thought you would enjoy the validation of your opinion.
ReplyDelete+1000 me too think Eric Roberts is good
ReplyDelete(And good looking!)

ReplyDeleteI thought Julia got her parts thru being the Oral Queen of Hollywood.
