Today's Blind Items - The Bet -Old Hollywood

Johnny Grant knew everyone in Hollywood and he told me a lot of stories over the years. Some I promised never to tell and some he told me I could write about immediately. This one he wanted to wait until all the participants were dead, but since there is kind of an Old Hollywood theme today, I thought I might as well share it. It is not technically Old Hollywood since some of the participants are still alive but it shows you that debauchery and rude behavior were as common four decades ago as they are today. There was a bet between several producers back in the day involving this actress who almost still enjoys A+ list name recognition despite a career that has been sporadic to say the least. At one point in time the entire world knew her name. Her career started with a bet. Several producers had meetings with the actress who still looks amazing despite her age. She has been on and off with a current B- list mostly movie actor who has two great television roles, one of which also was in the movies. The producers all wanted to work with the actress and all claimed to have the perfect script for her. One night at a poker party, the group attempted to hash out who would get her first for a movie. They all agreed that whoever could sleep with her first would win the bet but they wanted proof.This was back in the day before camcorders but the group decided that photos just wouldn't do. It had to be sex and it had to be on film. The actress is probably still living off the gifts and cash that were offered by the producers. There was a point where some of the producers would end up losing money because they spent so much on her. The producer/director that won though did end up having a blockbuster with her and actually won the bet in about a month. The screening of the film of her having sex was the hottest invitation in town and multiple A+ list actors were on hand to not only see the actress in the movie but also hoping they too would land a role opposite her in her acting debut. As it turns out it went to an actor who was not even there but who was in an Academy Award winning film and had a run of about a decade as an A list mostly movie actor.

Well, she went cold turkey with the pills (and it worked) but as for retiring, her stage mother from hell put a stop to that. The mother, one of the worst of all time, called up her shrink and screamed over the phone "NOTHING IS WRONG WITH MY DAUGHTER!!" (needless to say, the strained relationship between mother and daughter was further strained to the point of nonexistence). Mommy dearest also called up the head of the movie studio and the head demanded that the star go back to work because of time, money, blah blah blah. All attempts to get her off the pills failed due to her mother's sabotage and she took the next train back to Hollywood. Needless to say, the film she was set to start work on was one she didn't want to do att all but it turned out to be one of her best. As for her then lover, they broke up soon afterwards and he always regretted the fact that he didn't stop her mother sabotaging her daughter's sobriety.

Four For Friday -One Night At The Border- Part Three

The last Friday of 2014. It seems like the year has flown by. If you don't have anything to do this weekend, I will be here blogging away. Through the streets we went. PK’s tour bus skills were ok for open highway, but in tiny roads with parked cars on either side and lighting that was dim, he was having a tough time making his way through the streets. I don’t remember him hitting any cars but I do remember him taking a nice sized chunk out of a house that was especially close to a corner and he didn’t even bother to stop. No one knew exactly where they were going. All they could remember was that the tattoo artist was located next to a combination nightclub/brothel and that he worked and lived in the place next to it. Several cubs were investigated and at each club a couple of people would get off and ask around but fewer people were getting back on the bus. What had seemed like a lot of fun a few hours earlier was wearing thin and cheap drinks and partying until the dawn sounded like more fun. By the time PK and RH found the right place the sun was starting to rise and they spent 30 minutes banging on the door before the guy stumbled down the stairs to see who was there. Once he saw who it was he got pretty excited. When he was shown the drawings of the body art he said it would take a few hours total so the four or five of us that were left from the bus went to the bar/brothel next door to hang out. There were no customers at the bar or even a bartender. There was one table in the corner that was occupied by what looked like the women who probably worked upstairs in the brothel.  To this day I wish I had taken a photo of the inside of that bar. I’m not sure that I have ever seen a scene which would have told itself so perfectly with a photo.

JL was depressed looking at it and had grown tired of the whole experience. She was ready to go. The suburban part of her was returning and the adventure was gone. I agreed to go too but I wanted some assistance for what I was sure was going to be a very long morning so I grabbed a bottle of tequila from behind the bar and left $40 and walked out with JL and one of her friends. The other two people stayed behind to wait out the tattoos.

So, there we were. Three people who had no idea where we were exactly, in a very sketchy neighborhood with no other people in sight walking the street and passing a bottle of tequila back and forth as we tried to find a busy street that we could catch a cab and get to an airport. We walked and walked. After about 30 minutes of no cabs and no place to even call a cab from I remember passing a bus stop that had about ten people waiting in line to get on the bus. Surely riding a bus would be better than walking. It had been a long night. So, we got in line. When the bus arrived and we tried to get on, we had no pesos and panicked for a brief instant but the driver was more than happy to take $10 to let us on and we took about three more steps on the bus and were stopped. No more seats. We were standing. Better than not walking, but not by much. We still passed the tequila bottle back and forth and then I heard a whisper and saw a nudge.

It was kind of the same feeling you get when you are popping popcorn in the microwave. At first it is just a pop and then a few seconds and another pop. Then it becomes full on popping. I knew what was happening because I could hear the name in the whispers. Someone had recognized JL and now it was spreading through the bus.  She was huge there. Monster huge. During our walk that morning there were posters of her new record on bus stops . People on the bus were getting excited and pressing a little closer. JL knew what was happening. Because she lived it, she could sense it happening sooner than I could but this was a situation where she had no experience. Being trapped on a bus after a long night surrounded by fans could go in a lot of different directions. Looking back now at the situation, what happened  should have been expected but when you are in the middle of it and half drunk and tired, you just aren’t as confident and a little paranoia seeps in.

People started switching places so they could say hello to her or touch her. I don’t remember anyone asking for an autograph. A couple of photos were taken but mostly people just wanted to say hello or say how much they enjoyed her music.  People who had been in the back made their way to the front and it was a very organized procession as each person took five or ten seconds to speak to her. After about ten or fifteen minutes everyone had been met and the people who had squeezed on the bus in the three or four stops since we had boarded had also taken their turn. The bus driver had been told we were looking for a cab because we wanted to go to the airport. When he saw a cab that was empty he basically cut off the cab so it couldn’t move until the three of us made our way off the bus into the cab.

The taxi driver went from really ticked off to really happy when he saw who he was driving. He was even  more excited to show off the fact he had every single tape of JL’s music and played it full blast the entire way to the airport. By the time we made it to the airport the tequila was gone. I was exhausted. This was 24 hours straight of being awake.

The day was going to get longer. No planes were available for four hours. The thing I have always found amazing is that even though JL had been up even longer than me, she never stopped smiling the entire four hours when it seemed like she met a thousand people and took hundreds of photos. She signed autographs and chatted and never stopped being gracious and it is the reason she was so popular. People could feel the love she had for her fans.

Just as we were getting ready to board the plane, PK and RH showed up. They had decided the bus driver could drive the bus back and they wanted to get back much more quickly. We wanted to see the tattoos. They were both bandaged but each of them removed it to show tattoos which were definitely worth what everyone had gone through. To this day they are both really proud of those tattoos. They guy who did them was a genius. He died a year later in a drive by shooting. Today's Blind Items - One Night At The Border Part Two

By the time the band got off the stage it was around 230am. Last call was long gone and the booze backstage was running out. Carlos was summoned and he offered two more bottles of booze but then was closing the place down. Two bottles of booze might sound like a lot, but there were about 20 people drinking from those two bottles and they just rotated around a circle with each person taking a swig and then passing it to the next person. No ice, no mixers, just booze. No one complained and no one asked for anything else. Men, women, young and old, people just kept the stories flowing as fast as the booze. The two guys who had been up on stage singing decided they needed to commemorate this special night. Ideas were discussed and discarded. Finally they agreed on a tattoo. Not just any tattoo though. This was something special.  They decided together that only one person could do the tattoo. Unfortunately that person was in Mexico. Just across the border they said. They were not exactly sure which street but they were sure that once they got there they could find it. Nothing like wandering around a Mexican border town half-drunk in the middle of the night asking around for a tattoo guy that was only known by a nickname. Surprisingly, almost everyone in the room agreed to go. The next thing you know the group of twenty had been installed in PK’s tour bus. The driver was passed out so PK did the driving. Yeah, looking back, perhaps it was not the best idea but he said he could drive it. It was only after the first policeman pulled him over after 30 miles that he figured out how to turn the headlights on. Everyone was still buzzed and flying on the trip down.

There was no one sleeping and I don’t even remember anyone passed out. I do remember that during the entire trip down there was a porn movie playing on a loop on the television. When  conversation would lag enough all of a sudden you would hear some loud moaning and realize the porn was still playing. JL and I hung out towards the back with two of her friends, one of whom she was repeatedly trying to set me up with and another who was JL’s business partner in a venture that had nothing to do with music. This was before you needed a passport to cross the border by land. We thought that at the border, the Mexican border guards would at least want to have a look inside the bus or have everyone step out. Nope. In the middle of the night, the guard just waved the bus through and PK barely had to slow down. During the drive, RH was trying to draw the design that they both wanted on their bodies and they had a big back and forth that at one point had me look up and see that PK was taking a turn drawing and doing so while not even looking at the road. When I think about who could have died that night, it would have been a much bigger deal than the night Buddy Holly and Richie Valens died.

Today's Blind Items- One Night At The Border Part One

A mid-week announcement just to wish each of you a Merry Christmas and that I hope that you have an amazing couple of days and are spending it with people you love. Well, except for the crazy uncle. If you need a break from the activities, I will be here tomorrow and hope to see all of you.

Back in the day I had a friend. His name is Carlos. Real name. Owned a great club and taught me a lot about concert promoting and also had some very useful life lessons which have come into play more than once and introduced me to some people who are still some of my closest friends. Anyway, one day I was over at his house because I had a show coming up and even though we were friends, money was expected to be paid on time and in full or he would cancel your show in a second. He needed absolutely no notice to get a band or two in his place and fill it up so he had no qualms about shutting you down. Once money exchanged hands he would smile and he told me to come to the club later that night because he wanted to introduce me to a band he had playing. Later that night I showed up at the club and was frisked. Walked a little further and was frisked again. Carlos' shows were a little different than the ones I promoted and the crowd was completely different. Going inside the massive darkened club an opening band was playing and they were awful. It didn't matter to the crowd though because they came for one reason and it was to beat each other all night long in one huge mosh pit. Knowing the crowd, I was shocked to see one of my best friends way in the back where some chairs and tables were set up. She will always be A list in my mind and to her millions of fans. I had met her at an outdoor concert two years earlier and when she (lets call her JL) was not touring would usually hang out a couple of times a week. I hadn't known she was coming. If she was there, then this band must be one I really needed to meet. She mall type than was not someone who generally came to Carlos' club. She would go to my shows there and had even played there a few times but she was always more of a mall type than a double frisking security kind of place. Her boyfriend was with her but he had to go watch a guy play at a different venue that night who was going to replace a member of their band so almost right after I got there he left.

Conversation was impossible. The club was basically one big room. Walk in the door and the stage was in the front and the bar on the right. 1,000 people could fit inside but you would all be best friends at the end of the night. The music was always turned up to a massive volume. There were no neighbors to complain and there were so many police officers who earned a ton of money working overtime at the club that any call about noise complaints would be ignored. When the band stopped playing, Carlos came over and with him was a guy I had seen many times and was the lead singer (lets call him PK)  of a band that could sell out every club just like this one all over the country every single night and did. They had started out as one kind of band and made no money so they switched things up and the next thing you knew they were huge in a  club kind of way. They made tons of money and sold hundreds of thousands of records one night at time. Their sound belied the name of the band. They were anything but. With the lead singer (lets call him RP) was a guy I had never met, but had seen. They were just making it big. Huge actually. First big monster record had been released the year before. I say monster hit. It actually did not crack the Top 40 records but if you are a fan of the band you have heard the album many times and there are very few people who don't know the intro riff to the very first song on the record. Apparently the singer was there as a favor to the other lead singer and they were going to surprise the crowd later that night by playing together.

As the night wore on the word started to spread that tonight was going to be kind of special. Other people I knew started trickling into the club and other bands would finish their shows at other places around the city and were coming in. By 1am that 1,000 person capacity had been maxed out. This was probably 25% above that. This was going to be one night no one wanted to miss. The place almost exploded when the two came out. The crowd was expecting the headlining band of the night but when the singer of the monster band came out with him and that riff I spoke about before started blasting out of the speakers there was an eruption of noise that could probably only be matched by standing behind the engines of a 747. You would not think that kind of noise could be sustained for very long. You would be wrong. For about 90 minutes there was not one second I can remember where the crowd was not enthralled and mesmerized and totally into every word and beat. It was a show of epic proportions. It was hard to believe that the night was only going to get crazier. The craziness began when PK said to myself, RH and JL after the show that we should go to Mexico that night. This A list mostly movie director makes some very good movies. He is also one of the biggest degenerate perverts in the world. He doesn't go after kids or anything like that but that is about his only limit. Fast forward to a time when they worked together again and this time the director didn't even ask and the actress knew the cameras were there and didn't mind. She had grown used to them. When she was hosting another A list mostly movie actress who has an Academy Award nomination/win, the subject turned to the cameras when our A+ lister spotted one of them. The A lister expected the A+ lister to be freaked out but the A+ lister explained the situation. Well, the A lister is one of the most uptight people in the world and freaked out and had security take her trailer apart looking for cameras and kept someone on standby 24/7 even when no one was filming just to make sure nothing got installed. She would jump and be jittery whenever the director spoke to her and told a couple of other co-stars about what she heard. Some were agitated and freaked out but most knew about the director and his kink and had worked with him before and didn't really care which is why he kept hiring them for projects. Apparently it was like a war on set with one team against another and there is worry that all of this will come out and cause a huge nightmare.

What she prefers to keep quiet though is that she sets aside almost a quarter of her earnings for a scholarship fund she created for the members of this group. They have no ides she started it or funded it and she came up with the name of a fake corporation that is supposedly funding the scholarships. It is all her. With her current salary and a match by her boss the two of them are able to send about ten kids to college full-time and pay for their room and board and books too. Within the next year they are hoping to expand the program to be able to send every child who goes through the program to school.
