Today's Blind Items - One Night At The Border Clues

Lots of e-mails this weekend asking about One Night At The Border and how there just are not enough clues. So, from the e-mails I received here are the questions and clues that were most frequently asked.

Early 90's

The name of the club is one word. Some people put a The in front if it, but the real name only had one word.

Not Billie Joe Armstrong, Trent Reznor, Gwen Stefani, Tiffany, Debbie Gibson,

The initials all have something to do with the person. They are not random.

The wording gives a very big clue.

The location and what was happening in the morning also gives a very big clue.

    "RH" is Henry Rollins(HR).
He performed at Roxy early 90s and continues to.
the Rollins Band and RHCP toured together in early 90s(Europe included, small venues).

  11. This may be the early 80s . Female singer--Debbie Harry? Definitely somebody who'd get noticed on bus in Mexico and was successful outside the US.

Or "JL" is my other guess from part 2 (or 3)
    Jewel=JL (Abbreviated)

  14. Um, Enty says Early 90s in the post...

  15. Mea culpa. That's what I get for being a half -assed reader. It could still be her although she would have been in her 40s. She never ditched her iconic look . If the male singer is Anthony Kiedis it could be her. They have an interesting back story....

  16. Ooh interesting, tell us more Babs, thought he only liked them, barely legal

  17. When he was 8 he asked DH. to marry him. She knew his dad . Not very salacious but he def was on the make from an early urge I mean age.

    What it could be:

    1993:
RH:Henry Rollins (Rollins Band's first record came out in 1992)
    PK:Anthony Kiedis
JL:Debbie Harry (She was promoting Debravation in 1993)

The only problem with Henry Rollins is that he doesn't drink. He's straight edge.

  19. Jason Smith5:41 AM

They later starred together in "Changing Fashions" in 1993.

  20. Chi Chi6:10 AM

and Debbie would never have done anything like that on her lonesome, let alone for tats. NY'er all the way.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Chi Chi6:19 AM

Maybe the female is Joan Jett her real last name is larkin.? Cant think of anyone that would be so recognizable other than a few, even Madonna but what guy would fit with her?and can you imagine madge going along with that ride? no way.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Jason Smith6:26 AM

Co-sign. Joan is extremely humble to anybody and everybody, this could be her.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Tricia136:31 AM

Jett is an 80s icon, and nothing suburban"or mall" about her ever...lol. She was a punk rock lesbian pretty much out of the gate

    ReplyDelete
  24. hankypanky9:42 AM

    The woman is Selena.
She was a "mall" pop musician that a random taxi driver in Mexico would have had all her tapes.
JL- jennifer Lopez played her in her biopic.
Her BF ( and in '92 husband) played in her band.
This gives the timeline for the blind sometime between January 1990-April 1992, when they got married. Because Enty calls him her boyfriend and not husband.

@ hanky-panky, waaay to go with an inspired guess!!! Selena wasn't even on my compass but it totally works - hmmm, H.Rollins?, A. Keidis? & Selena- interesting roadtrip that's for sure...

@hankypanky - damn, I think you've got it! I'm from San Antonio - I should have guessed Selena!!! Oh my God, you're a genius!

How about: TROUBADOR CLUB maybe (if not ROXY)
    RH-Red Hot's Anthony Keidis(he drank)-if Henry Rollins never drank
    PK- Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder
    JL- Selena (ala hankypanky's scenario)

Wow! If this is really Selena that would be major major. Great detective work I think!

  29. back again1:33 PM

Oops it's RP not RH & neither Roxy nor Troubador can hold 1000+ people..more important-
    I'm back to:
    1. Michael Stipe (after reading Enty's last clues here.) "MONSTER" song.."MONSTER" hit= hint @ REM's album "MONSTER;
    Most recognizable riff: Mandolin riff at beginning of "Losing My Religion" first song on album;
    2. JL=Selena ("will always be "A" in my mind" & above stuff that hanky said)
    3. RP= RHCP= Anthony Keidis.... I gotta look at timelines

"The" Whiskey, Selena, Vince Neil of Motley Crue. He wrote "Tattoos & Tequila: To Hell and Back with One of Rock's Most Notorious Frontmen".

Hey CatBass, I thought 'the' Whiskey too--- yeeeaaah.
Not so much Vince Neil but w/ that Book Title,Vince Neil definitely makes sense..good info! CDaN posters are getting there..mb ; )

Clue given for RP's identity include:

    - They had started out as one kind of band and made no money so they switched things up.
    - Their sound belied the name of the band. They were anything but.
    - First big monster record had been released the year before.
    - ...there are very few people who don’t know the intro riff to the very first song on the record.

All these clues fit Kurt Cobain and Nirvana -- who started out as a hardcore punk band but then switched to alternative/pop. Their sound belying the name -- they were loud yet called Nirvana. First monster record released year before (Nevermind), with well-known riff on first song of album ("Smells Like Teen Spirit" is the first track).

RP could stand for "RIP", (Rest in Peace).

    ReplyDelete
  34. Gunnar8:31 AM

"Losing My Religion" is not on Monster, it is on "Out of Time" and is the second track at that.

    ReplyDelete
  35. back again8:40 AM

Hey Gunnar, I didn't mean that "Losing My Religion" was on Monster album-just that he had an album called Monster- & my DERP* on being 1st song-I thought it was & knew I shoulda checked it out but too lazy.
Problem w/Kurt Cobain is that Enty said that the 2 guys still check out their tattoos-so can't be Kurt..

    ReplyDelete
  36. J Girl9:25 AM

These are the two lines that get me:
They were just making it big. Huge actually. First big monster record had ben released the year before. I say monster hit.
Leads me to Metallica via "Some Kind of Monster" and the "Monsters of Rock" Festivals that they were playing at the time.

It actually did not crack the Top 40 Records....(?)
but if you are a fan of the band you have heard the album many times and there are very few people who don't know the intro riff to the very first song on the record.
Both Metallica's "Black" album and Nirvana's "Nevermind" did extremely well on the charts. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Enter Sandman" are both highly recognizable.

Kurt Cobain was a Metallica fan and James Hetfield was a Nirvana fan.
I'm going to go for RH as being James Hetfield and PK as being Kurt.
For location I'm going to guess San Diego, January 1992.
    Hopefully that's my final answer.

He was my original guess, but seems both musicians are alive, i lost track. Lol.
But certainly an iconic riff and- band:)(nirvana)

  38. Gunnar11:44 AM

Hey back again -- you're right, I didn't catch the present tense of the 2 lead singers still "liking" their tattoos...so Cobain is definitely out.

Here are my next round of guesses:

PK: George Clinton, lead singer of Parliament-Funkadelic (Parliament King?) -- started out as a Motown band and switched to funk/rock genre. In the early 90's they had reconfigured and were relatively huge at clubs -- they toured with Lollapalooza in 1994 and even appeared that same year in the film "PCU". However, I'm uncertain if he has any tattoos, so this guess may be a big stretch.

RP/RH: I starting to like Anthony Kiedis (Red Pepper, or Red Hot) for this lead singer guess. Although RHCP were already known in the local scene, their first big "monster" record was Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magik, released in the Fall of 1991 (works for timeline). While the album did well, the first track did not chart ("The Power of Equality") -- which has a very recognizable riff with Kiedis chanting "hey batter-batter, hey batter-batter....SWING! in the intro. Also: George Clinton produced the RHCP 1985 album, "Freaky Styley", so these two had an established relationship by this time, and very easily could've performed The Power of Equality together.

JL: Selena sounds like the best guess for this one because of all the aforementioned reasons, additionally she is referred to in past tense ".....it is the reason she was so popular".

Only thing I can make a guess for is the venue, as I am not at all familiar with the SoCal rock club scene at that time....although 1,000 is quite large...perhaps a venue that was a former theater/ballroom?

    ReplyDelete
  39. back again2:05 PM

    @Gunnar, I think Venue's 'Whiskey A Go Go'- it holds 1000 people(just as enty describes);
at this point,my old guess Anthony Keidis, Eddie Vedder,Selena..seeing that acceding to a poster, Michael Stipe doesn't have tattoos!! so many options: chris cornell, metallica guys, guns & roses,Vince Neill

Loooong time lurker here. I've been thinking about this blind ever since I first saw it last night and just had to write in because I don't think anyone's gotten the full line up right yet.

I agree that JL is Selena for the reasons mentioned above. PK and RH are tough though. I love REM, Nirvana and Pearl Jam but they aren't bands that would require their fans to go through a "double frisk" for their shows.

As Enty said the location matters for this blind so I wonder if RP is short for "rapper", with LA as the locale, West Coast gangsta rap was just hitting its stride in the early 90s and maybe Selena was there to see Cypress Hill, a Latino gangsta rap group. Cypress Hill toured with Rage Against the Machine so Zach de la Rosa could be PK?

On a completely different note, another band that fits many of the clues is the Quireboys. They were a heavy metal band that released their first album on EMI in 1990. They were touring the US around this time, one club at a time. They started off as the Queerboys in the 80s but made no money and when they changed their name to the Quireboys, success then followed. They played the Monsters of Rock Festival in 1990 so the "monster" clue fits. Also their style of music, hard rock, was nothing like their name as they did not sound like choir boys at all. They toured with Guns 'n Roses back then so maybe it was the Quireboys with Axl Rose?

So I guess my final guesses here would be Cypress Hill with Zack de la Rosa and Selena or Quireboys with Axl Rose and Selena. Quite a interesting assortment of characters either way.

I'm going to throw out the names of two clubs in San Antonio, quite simply because they kind of "make more sense to me" regarding the Selena guess. Selena lived in South Texas and had boutiques in both San Antonio and Corpus Christi.
The first club was called "Showcase". It was owned by a man named Carlos and featured, from what I can tell, primarily thrash/hardcore metal shows (mosh pit/double frisking) and not the kind of venue that Selena would go to. (It was also known as "Showcase Special Event Center".)
There was also another venue called Sneakers, that every band ended up in after playing the Convention Center Arena. That being said, I would lean towards Showcase as the venue. It was located in strip mall, so noise complaints wouldn't be likely.

Enty's use of the word "epic" makes me think of 2 things:
    1) the record label and
    2) Faith No More (for some reason)
I can't explain this. I just keep coming back to that word.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Gunnar2:34 AM

Hey J Girl -- I like your guesses for the venue. Clearly, the most solid guess of this whole BI is that JL is Selena. Personally I can't rectify Selena with the rest of the story (why would Selena be at a metal/rock/double frisk show?)...but if the venue is in Texas instead of SoCal, that would make much more sense. I also seem to recall something about her boyfriend/husband being very into metal at the time....so, that also fits with them being at the show together (at least initially).

Another guess for "PK" -- the initials could stand for "Preacher's Kid" (a common use of "PK")...any musicians of the era that fit this label? Again, I'm reaching.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Dave S.4:57 AM

On the club . . . Troubadour's a good guess, but no owner's named anything like Carlos. The Roxy, though, is owned, by Lou Adler. He's part Mexican and has sons named Pablo and Cisco.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Dave S.4:59 AM

And the Red Hot Chili Pepper's album Mother's Milk was HUGE for them--really broke them to popularity, but it never got above 52 on the album charts. Also a digression stylistically.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Gunnar11:31 AM

Hey Dave S....I had the same thought about Mother's Milk, and here's why. In addition to the items you've pointed out, the first track on Mother's Milk, "Good Time Boys" is a well known RHCP jam (with a recognizable riff intro) and it contains excerpts from "Try" by Thelonious Monster (LA post-punk)...could this be the "monster" reference Enty gives? Again, a stretch....

    ReplyDelete
  50. Hey Gunnar. I've also read that Chris was really into metal and SA was the "Heavy Metal Capital of the World" when I was growing up. I've spent more time on this blind than I've spent on papers in college.
    LOL.
I moved from S TX to the East Coast in '89 and my musical tastes were more alternative ("120 Minutes on Sunday nights), so I'm trying to think of artists who would have been INSTANTLY recognizable to the tattoo artist as soon as he opened the door.
This blind is making me crazy.

    ReplyDelete
  51. J Girl8:49 AM

There was a Pantera gig at Showcase in 1991 and I was really, really, really trying to make it fit for this blind. Somehow. I was hoping that it was THE gig that Rob Halford joined them at but it's virtually impossible to find any info online about shows that were that long ago. It would have fallen right around Pantera had had their opening slot on the European leg of the "Painkiller" tour.It would have made the blind incredibly poignant due to the deaths of Selena, Dimebag, and the tattoo artist due to gun violence. Rob Halford admitted in an interview that he didn't get tattoos until later in life. He said he "met some people in 1990" and then started.

There were some interesting Danzig gigs with Soundgarden and White Zombie but I just couldn't get them to work due to the time constraints.

Regarding the phrase: "Their sound belied the name of the band", the only word (besides Nirvana) that comes to mind is Sublime, but I think the timing doesn't work for that either.

All this talk about the border and tequila has me thinking of Sammy (Ray) Hagar, but he only has two tattoos (that I was able to find info about).
