Four For Friday -One Night At The Border- Part Three

The last Friday of 2014. It seems like the year has flown by. If you don't have anything to do this weekend, I will be here blogging away. There are only a few more days to see your photo in Random Photos before Reveal Day. So, hurry and e-mail it to entlawyer90210@yahoo.com If you would like to follow me on Twitter I am @entylawyer

Through the streets we went. PK’s tour bus skills were ok for open highway, but in tiny roads with parked cars on either side and lighting that was dim, he was having a tough time making his way through the streets. I don’t remember him hitting any cars but I do remember him taking a nice sized chunk out of a house that was especially close to a corner and he didn’t even bother to stop. No one knew exactly where they were going. All they could remember was that the tattoo artist was located next to a combination nightclub/brothel and that he worked and lived in the place next to it. Several cubs were investigated and at each club a couple of people would get off and ask around but fewer people were getting back on the bus. What had seemed like a lot of fun a few hours earlier was wearing thin and cheap drinks and partying until the dawn sounded like more fun. By the time PK and RH found the right place the sun was starting to rise and they spent 30 minutes banging on the door before the guy stumbled down the stairs to see who was there. Once he saw who it was he got pretty excited. When he was shown the drawings of the body art he said it would take a few hours total so the four or five of us that were left from the bus went to the bar/brothel next door to hang out. There were no customers at the bar or even a bartender. There was one table in the corner that was occupied by what looked like the women who probably worked upstairs in the brothel.  To this day I wish I had taken a photo of the inside of that bar. I’m not sure that I have ever seen a scene which would have told itself so perfectly with a photo.

JL was depressed looking at it and had grown tired of the whole experience. She was ready to go. The suburban part of her was returning and the adventure was gone. I agreed to go too but I wanted some assistance for what I was sure was going to be a very long morning so I grabbed a bottle of tequila from behind the bar and left $40 and walked out with JL and one of her friends. The other two people stayed behind to wait out the tattoos.

So, there we were. Three people who had no idea where we were exactly, in a very sketchy neighborhood with no other people in sight walking the street and passing a bottle of tequila back and forth as we tried to find a busy street that we could catch a cab and get to an airport. We walked and walked. After about 30 minutes of no cabs and no place to even call a cab from I remember passing a bus stop that had about ten people waiting in line to get on the bus. Surely riding a bus would be better than walking. It had been a long night. So, we got in line. When the bus arrived and we tried to get on, we had no pesos and panicked for a brief instant but the driver was more than happy to take $10 to let us on and we took about three more steps on the bus and were stopped. No more seats. We were standing. Better than not walking, but not by much. We still passed the tequila bottle back and forth and then I heard a whisper and saw a nudge.

It was kind of the same feeling you get when you are popping popcorn in the microwave. At first it is just a pop and then a few seconds and another pop. Then it becomes full on popping. I knew what was happening because I could hear the name in the whispers. Someone had recognized JL and now it was spreading through the bus.  She was huge there. Monster huge. During our walk that morning there were posters of her new record on bus stops . People on the bus were getting excited and pressing a little closer. JL knew what was happening. Because she lived it, she could sense it happening sooner than I could but this was a situation where she had no experience. Being trapped on a bus after a long night surrounded by fans could go in a lot of different directions. Looking back now at the situation, what happened  should have been expected but when you are in the middle of it and half drunk and tired, you just aren’t as confident and a little paranoia seeps in.

People started switching places so they could say hello to her or touch her. I don’t remember anyone asking for an autograph. A couple of photos were taken but mostly people just wanted to say hello or say how much they enjoyed her music.  People who had been in the back made their way to the front and it was a very organized procession as each person took five or ten seconds to speak to her. After about ten or fifteen minutes everyone had been met and the people who had squeezed on the bus in the three or four stops since we had boarded had also taken their turn. The bus driver had been told we were looking for a cab because we wanted to go to the airport. When he saw a cab that was empty he basically cut off the cab so it couldn’t move until the three of us made our way off the bus into the cab.

The taxi driver went from really ticked off to really happy when he saw who he was driving. He was even  more excited to show off the fact he had every single tape of JL’s music and played it full blast the entire way to the airport. By the time we made it to the airport the tequila was gone. I was exhausted. This was 24 hours straight of being awake.

The day was going to get longer. No planes were available for four hours. The thing I have always found amazing is that even though JL had been up even longer than me, she never stopped smiling the entire four hours when it seemed like she met a thousand people and took hundreds of photos. She signed autographs and chatted and never stopped being gracious and it is the reason she was so popular. People could feel the love she had for her fans.

Just as we were getting ready to board the plane, PK and RH showed up. They had decided the bus driver could drive the bus back and they wanted to get back much more quickly. We wanted to see the tattoos. They were both bandaged but each of them removed it to show tattoos which were definitely worth what everyone had gone through. To this day they are both really proud of those tattoos. They guy who did them was a genius. He died a year later in a drive by shooting. He was sitting on his couch upstairs above the shop and he was killed. That made them even more grateful for the art work and I know that RH got his darkened last year because it had started to fade. It was a great night. One of those nights that don’t come along very often and that make you feel like you have lived. People need to have an adventure or two in their minds to help them get through the days that are usually so boring.

HI OG ENTY!!! HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!! Welcome back!
I tried getting through this last night a tad indisposed.
Time frame says early 90s so imma say Slash or Axl Rose and Kurt Cobain and the obvious though wrong Juliette Lewis.

I am,out of the loop on this blog,d- but i stick with Anthony keides in there(RH), and I'm most intro by JH. I guesses Sheryl Crow but sounds like could be a Michelle Branch type,if she was older maybe

Meant out of loop on this blind(didn't read yesterdays:(
Hey Sandy! I guessed Axl in part 1 I think. Chick is stumping me- definitely, early 90s so I said Sheryl crow

Hi Tricia I thought the girl was an actress with singing on the side a bit? Like I said last night was a bit of a comprehension problem :(. Not to mention OG decided to write a chapter of his book here.

Another actress with singing on the side back then was named Jenny Lewis who moved into full time singing, as did Juliette.

Because she was big in Mexico and the initials are JL I read it as JLO but I also have a hard time imagining her being nice and self-sacrificing with her fans (even in the earlier days). Her music was big very late 90s' and early 2000's and I could see an intricate tattoo needing a touch up 15 years later... I dunno though.. I'm better at these when ENTY doesn't use initials. I've learned in the past they can be misleading.

linda ronstadt would have been huge in mexico. she loves the music and has recorded albums of it. could it be her?

i don't see why they'd be crazy about sheryl crow.

C'mon folks, it's not Jenny or Juliette...it's someone who is going to be recognizable to everyone on a bus ( i.e. mainstream hit maker in that border town) and not just because her face is plastered on bus stops . Someone with a bunch of hits and several releases because the cab driver has "every single tape of JL’s music."
Sheryl Crow didn't have her first hit until 1994 and the follow up album kinda tanked. So, she doesn't have the track record. It's someone who had records out before then.
It could be someone who lived near the border and really did genre crossing music like Selena, though I don't think she ever lived in LA.

Jennifer Lopez in Mexico after portraying Selena possibly

I agree Annie. I was thinking of crossover artists, but in actuality, Sheryl was appreciated and embraced by lots of different genres and cultures- she had a country. Blue grass vibe from the beginning(not saying it's her. ) and she was also "mall music "friendly at same time.(her success hit in'93? Maybe a year too late to fit blind.

Perhaps Natalie Merchant and that would make REM/Michael Stipe work(good friends/exes)

  12. Since when was/is JLo one of Enty's best friends? Not to be a pill here, sorry

That said I have absolutely no clue or guess at all who any of the participants could be

OK, can't be Heather Locklear because the first part of the blind says she's a singer, more of a pop/shopping mall type who was out of place at this show and night of adventure. Also, her being so friendly and OK with people in this blind means it is 100% not Jennifer Lopez; she couldn't be friendly and gracious to people if her life depended on it and I don't see her on a public bus at all. Too full of herself and always has been. The clues also say the female had a bf at the time that she performed with so it rules out JLo. I also think it rules out Aimee Mann because, well, she isn't very nice to fans. Seeing as this is the LA music scene in the late 80s/early 90s, I'm going to say it was Gwen Stefani. Her bf at the time was in her band. She is gracious to fans, would have gone along for the ride and would have seemed a little out of place at a hard/glam rock show. I've been doing research for the tattooed rockers and my final guess is Axl Rose and Sebastian Back for the two singers on stage together. They have been friends for decades and Bach has many funny stories about their antics including stories that include Steven Tyler and David Lee Roth, Both are tatted. It is absolutely not Kurt Cobain. He had one tattoo and was not a partier in public.

  16. The 10th Doctor4:39 AM

A big clue that this is late 80s, early 90s in the LA scene is Enty's reference about paying to play. Big scandal back then. I'm wondering if Carlos was the club manager and not the owner.

I thought of J-Lo, but I know Enty can't stand her. I remember hearing about the tattoo artist being killed.

Sebastian Bach is a great guess! Skid arrow totally changed up their sound(for a bit at least) with ballads like "I'll be there for you"loved it fwiw.

    Axl definitely established I think.

Gonna toss in Jewel for the female singer. She was beloved, highly recognizable/ and mall friendly. I'm feeling her for the female of the early 90's- she was an IT girl a bit, I think Enty speaks quite favorably of her, as well.

Who said Cobain and Axl Rose? They despised each other for eternity - anyone recall the big dustup at the awards show where Rose yelled at Kurt to "shut your bitch up" (referencing CLove). Cobain also did not have a huge back tatoo, or any large tats iirc.

No offense to posters guesses but Gloria Estefan in Tijuana getting tatted with a bunch of rock stars after clubbing and drinking all night? Drinking tequila straight out of the bottle? Don't think so.

The players here are late 80s/90s hair band-heavy metal rockers though.

  27. The 10th Doctor10:09 AM

Hi @Pookie, Cobain keeps coming up as one of the performers that night and initially was being paired with Pearl Jam or Soundgarden. I do remember the animosity between Rose and Cobain. I've been saying for a couple of days now that there is no way Cobain is part of this blind,

  33. Long time lurker here: Gwen Stefani/ Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) for first male singer / Billie Joe Armstrong ( Green Day ) for second male singer. Green Days' 'Long View' is the first song on one of their early successes and has a very well known intro riff.

Everyone in Athens, GA knows that Michael Stipe is gay, gay, gay. He and Natalie Merchant were friends but the "dating" was purely a publicity stunt. I was in college in Athens during REM's heyday, and everyone knew that Michael Stipe liked 'em young and pretty and that he had slept with every young gay in town. During the "Green" tour, Stipe was "dating" a friend of a friend of mine, and he would fly the guy all over the world to meet up with him. Most people don't know that Stipe is HIV+ now, either, but everyone in Athens knows. And no, he would NEVER have been one to say "let's get drunk and go to Tijuana and get a tattoo", either. He is a hipster jerk who takes himself WAYYYYYYY to seriously for that kind of stuff. On the other hand, the other 3 guys in REM are the nicest guys you would ever meet.

ewel was one of my first thoughts too, but the timing is really a bit off. Her first hit wasn't until '94, and for an entire bus to know her, well, that's not something that happens overnight. I know she was in SD at the time and had done a lot of border hopping, beach bumming & surfing in the area before she hit it big, so she wouldn't have been freaked out by being on a bus in Mexico. But by the time her song was a hit, she was a touring machine.
But I'm not sure her music was really big down there.
How about Sheila E? Mexican-American, had hits in the late 80s and early 90s. Lived in LA. Acted in movies. By all accounts a nice person. Timeline seems better. Well known in the industry.

I have no Idea who this is, but enjoy the guesses. To go with what misfab said earlier about REM- about 15 years ago they played a stadium outside Detroit. Best friend asked if I wanted to go last minute, but I had to pass so she went with another good friend. After the concert they went to a club in Pontiac where Patti Smith was playing. As they looked up at the upper balcony (that was closed off), they recognized members if REM and started pointing and whispering to themselves. One of the guys saw them and invited them up to watch the show. She said that the band was incredibly nice and low key. She even got to wear Michael's jacket during the show ( but returned it to him after ). Not the most exciting story, but just a confirmation that they treat fans well.

  43. Selena as the singer. JL played her

  44. J Girl1:50 AM

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that KP is Thom Yorke.
K = Kid A; P = Pablo Honey. "Creep" was originally released in 1992 but didn't really make it big until 1993. If you look at their tour dates, there are a couple of "unknown venues" in both LA and Dallas in, I believe, August of either '92 or '93.
I THINK Michael Stipe is involved somehow. The clues (to me) are "monster" "drive" and "Buddy Holly".
Radiohead opened for REM on their European "Monster" tour in 1995. Michael Stipe was a big fan of theirs so he had to be aware of their work early on (1992-1993). They did a lot of touring in the early 90's.
I really like the Selena guess. It fits. Especially the part about one of her friends being involved in a venture that had nothing to do with music.

Ok here goes... JL is definitely for sure Selena (reasons already listed by others). Timeline would be 1991, but no later than April '92 (Selena married boyfriend in April 1992) and she was on tour beginning in 1991. Espy said said if she weren't on tour they'd hang out, but he didn't know she was in town, so clue she was on tour. Now we have a timeline.

The clubs I can think of that fit the discripriin

The clubs I can think of that fit the description are 1. Troubadour 2. Palladium and 3. Jabberjaw. During that time period, Nirvana played an epic legendary show at Jabberjaw that to this day, no one actually knows what really happened (yes, it was that epic). In the crowd that night was Iggy Pop, the person I can think of crazy enough to come up with an idea like driving to Mexico in the middle of the night for a tattoo, lol. Kurt did hang out with Iggy that night, but not a whole lot is known as to what else went on that night.

I have no idea how RP(RH?) fits into Nirvana, but PK could be Punk King, which Iggy Pop is known as the godfather of punk, ie Punk King. Just a theory.

As for Michael Stipe, I've seen him naked, and there's narry a tattoo on him. So Stipe is out of the realm of possibilities. Besides, who in the hell moshes to REM? Lol.

That's all I've got so far... Kurt Cobain and Iggy Pop at Jabberjaw with a candlestick, LOL.!

Yes, the Selena boyfriend/marriage timeline really limits this. She was based in Corpus. The only club I remember in San Antonio was Randy's Rodeo, so that's out. Here I am, trying to figure out where Enty went to undergrad or law school. LOL!
