Oscar Pistorius Sentencing Begins Today

In a proceeding that is expected to last several days, a judge in South Africa will begin hearing arguments and testimony today to determine the sentence of Oscar Pistorius, who was convicted last month of negligent homicide. Pistorius was found not guilty of the more serious charges he faced. The maximum sentence he faces is 15 years in jail, but he can also walk away with just a fine or a suspended sentence. On Valentine's Day in 2013, Oscar Pistorius killed his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp by firing multiple bullets that hit her as she was hiding in a bathroom in his bedroom after they argued. Pistorius says he thought Reeva was an intruder. Attorneys in South Africa are expecting him to receive either no jail time or very little jail time because they will successfully argue he is a first time offender with a disability that would make prison life hard. Umm, it should be hard. He killed a woman who was hiding from the guy.

  1. Read both sides of case, but im leaning toward guilty. Have no idea what his jail time will be. To say its too hard for him cos hes handicapped is bunk. They're people in jail missing limbs, with alzheimers, cancer patients, on dialysis- c'mon, dont say stupid shit.

  2. Watched most of the trial via YouTube. Pistorius is a whiny, entitled punk who lies about everything, pukes in court and is generally a waste of space.
The entire sentencing procedure will appear on YouTube as well.
I watch SABC videos. It can be a bit tedious, as South Africa has 11 official languages and witnesses can choose a language and an interpreter assists them. And there's no jury. Pretty interesting.

  3. I do understand that many white South Africans are obsessed with guns and obsessed with black people breaking into their houses and robbing them and raping their women and his defence team did a good job of painting himself as completely paranoid because of a previous break-in on the other hand plenty of evidence to show he was a control freak boyfriend and they were arguing a lot at the time and ironically his paranoia and control freakedness fit together to paint a picture of this guy. I think however he has gotten away with murder, we will see if he gets any jail time.

  4. His disability didn't hinder him when he was in the Olympics, so it shouldn't be a hindrance when paying the price for gunning down a scared woman in a locked bathroom.

  7. No jury seems ludicrous in a murder trial.
    Reeva's family must be devastated.

"Walk away" may not be best term to use for Pistorius.

  11. The judge has already demonstrated she's an idiot. I don't expect much in the sentencing phase of the trial.
