Neil Patrick Harris Was Fourth Choice To Host Oscars

Who says that if you are not on the medal stand you don't come out as a winner. Neil Patrick Harris was not in the top three choices to host the Academy Awards, but he came out a winner. The producers of the show wanted Ellen again. Meh. It is a nice safe choice and I think they should come back to her at some point in the future. Chris Rock was the second choice and I think he is the greatest stand up comedian alive right now which is exactly why I wouldn't want him hosting the Oscars. I don't need him to have tone down who he is or what he does and I think he would have to which is probably why he turned the producers down. Now, the next name they went after is one I can totally get behind. They went after Julia Louis Dreyfus. She would have been amazing. A little edgy and someone everyone loves and knows and can do sketches and everything you need to do in a show like this, but she also said no. So, finally they asked NPH who said yes very quickly and is a great choice. Should he have been the fourth choice though?

  2. Ellen would have been a snooze. Chris Rock would have offended the older Academy members. Julia would have been an interesting choice. But I agree that NPH will be great.

  3. That is a thankless job. I can't blame anyone for turning it down. The show is boring and whoever writes it isn't funny. Better to have the host go up there and ad-lib all night. Or have no host period.

  4. Big fan of JLD, but don't know if she could have pulled it off. Would have rather seen her than NPH though. He's tired.

  6. Enty posted this to facebook 21 hours ago. Why no simul-posting?
And I was choice #300,000,001 for the academy, so at least I made the list, right? It's an honor just to be nominated.

  7. I, too, enjoy Hugh Jackman as a host, but maybe they are saving him for the Tony's. I haven't watched the Oscars in years because I come to the internet and watch clips of the highlights the next day. Or see what everyone on CDAN and Dlisted is saying. I trust MichaelK to give me the best parts.

  8. I'm suspicious about this: If he fails (too easy hosting the oscars), I would be sab, and if he succeeds, I won't care.
ellen would have been great, because I won't follow the ceremony except on twitter, and the rantfest would be amazing.

  9. So tired of seeing NPH everywhere!

  10. Agree with Sandy--it is truly a thankless job. Everyone says you're too bland or (rarely) too edgy.

I'd love to see someone like Kathy Griffin or, even better, Lisa Lampanelli hosting. Most of the Academy fossils who keep the Oscars so safe and dull would go into cardiac arrest which certainly would help matters.

    1. I'd watch if Kathy was hosting.

    2. Those are the exact 2 comedians I watched in You Tube last night.
      They're both sooo funny.

  11. I can't stand Neil Patrick Harris. He is completely skeevy and so full of himself. I'd watch him play a different character in a movie but not hosting as himself.

  12. That's what the Hollywood Reporter says.
I doubt that the producers of the show spend weeks on pick #1, then pick #2, etc. There's a bunch of people who get asked, and if they agree, there's more talking involved, before they decide on a name. The other guys are then kept on the back burner for next year.
Or if NPH was indeed the 4th guy on the list, this isn't the first year the host was not the number one or even the number two. Why reveal that NPH was not the first pick this year, while almost everybody agrees that NPH is a fine host for this kind of ceremony?

  13. I'm over NPR. He's getting too smug and full of himself.

  14. That said, I'm sure he'll be a fine host.

  15. 1st, 4th whatever. He will be supersonic!

  16. This comes from Hollywood Reporter, a publication that might consider removing the word "reporter" from their title if their editors can't catch sentences like "(t)he comedian shined during his brief appearance"... They were also ticked that Jimmy Kimmel wasn't considered.

So, yeah, everyone believes the guy who owned the Tony Awards had a fourth place chance. After Seth McFarlane, no way would they go with Chris Rock, and JLD doesn't have the widespread appeal that NPH has.

    1. @7 Where's Nikki Finke when you need her? Her battles with The Hollywood Reporter were epic!

I'm salivating for the day her book gets published. ::rubs hands together in glee:::

  18. I think he will do a great job. Plus he can dance and sing which increases the chances for memorable production numbers.

  19. I love NPH. And I think Chris Rock would have sucked. #where'sstevemartinonthislist?

  20. Why not hire our own Count Jerkula? The lack of anal sex references in the opening monologue has been holding the show back.

    1. So true.
Butt NPH is well versed in that area too.

  21. Eddie Murphy. Should not have been fired from the job in the first place but the Academy probably doesn't feel like admitting that fact.

  22. So Chris Rock is the greatest comedian of our time and sarah Silverman gets no love???? I don't understand people's definition of comedy. I never laughed once at his observational "comedy" - just because u scream it out doesn't make it funnier. I give up trying to understand....

  24. I love him. He has personality.

  25. Totally right on the genius that is Chris Rock. I like NPH, but Fey & Poehler would be good although now doing Globes. Kevin Spacey would be good. ANd yes, Jimmy Kimmel would kill

  26. NPH is such a safe pick. I like MinPinGirl's pick of Wanda Sykes. I want someone up there who's not afraid to offend these puffed up ego maniacs. Joan Rivers would have been fabulous. It has to be someone who can tell a joke live and most actors just can't.
