Michael Phelps Enters Rehab

After picking up his second DUI arrest, Olympic champion swimmer, Michael Phelps entered rehab this weekend to take care of his drinking issues. This will also probably make his DUI punishment lighter but I think he is going in for the right reasons. I think if you get a DUI, the chances are good that you have a drinking problem that needs to be addressed, whether it is rehab or meetings. Plus, a lot of his income is sponsors related and it doesn't look good to your sponsors if you are gambling for eight hours and drinking and then get arrested for being drunk behind the wheel when you are supposed to be swimming and making the sponsors more money when you succeed at the next Olympics.

  1. This is his second, yes?
Damn right it's about the sponsors.

  2. Good for you dude. You'll still be a douche, but not a drunk douche.

  3. Only done for the $ and to get a lighter sentence. HIs whole statement was strangely worded, said something like going to rehab to make better choices! He didn't really say to stop drinking as I remember it.

  4. If you get a DUI in CA there are laws that must be adhered to and rehab may count towards your classes but not your community service/fine/time served. Good he's getting help though.

  5. Spending most of his time in the water logically turns him to drink like a fish.

    I'm leaving now.

  8. My kid swims and I know a lot of young swimmers that really admire him. I hope he gets his shit together.

  9. God love him, he's super-duper-to the max talented, but doesn't come across as the sharpest knife in the drawer. Darn tootin' he needs to make better choices. He must have missed all the character education we do in schools now because he was at extra swim practices. Hope he fully owns up to his mistakes and grows from them.

  10. Fuck him. He only got CAUGHT twice, God knows how many other times he pulled this shit and got away with it. Entitled asshole. I hope when he does it again, he only kills himself and not anyone else. He's rich enough to call a fucking cab, especially since he was gambling for 8 hours prior to this and apparently buying drinks, but he doesn't give a damn about anyone but himself.

Haha Frufra "character education" in schools? You aren't being serious, right?

  11. His Mom and sisters seem nice, too bad she raised such a douche.

The thing is, though, I think it's a waste of resources to send someone to rehab unless they are actually an alcoholic. Just because you've been stupid doesn't mean you are addicted. Meanwhile, there are real addicts who aren't getting the help they need.

  12. It strikes me that he's been playing catchup on all the shit he missed out on all those years he was training. When you train for (and win) the Olympics your ass isn't drinking, getting high or much of anything but fucking swimming. I dont think he's gonna be going back to the Olympics at this rate. He went, he won, he wants to party. He's an idiot for not getting a driver but look at how extreme other athletes party or (God forbid) actors. I don't think he's an alcoholic as much as just stupid.

  13. Yep character education is a thing. Was called ethics class when my eldest was younger.
I used to swim, a lot. 11 sessions/ week + weight training etc? it is your entire life. He's dumb , never drink & drive kids. I think he's probably letting loose after years & years spent in his chlorinated prison.
Big douche bag. Who knows how many other times he's made a 'bad decision '.

  15. I think Phelps had sifficult childhoon. Mb bullied because of learning disabilites, and focusing all the time on swimming. Plus he mother shops at Chicos, lol. Anyhoo, he went from dude to be pitied and tragucally unhip to winning, having beautiful women throw themselves at him. Im sure some of that has dried ip. Its no surprise he is acting out.

  16. " sifficult childhoon". I crack myself up with these typos. I meant of course difficult childhood.

  17. I live in Baltimore and see him out constantly. There's no way he is taking his training seriously at this rate. Last I heard after his first DUI his management team made him move to a house near the bars he frequents so that he wouldn't be driving home. Looks like that plan failed when Baltimore got a new casino! Rehab has been a LONG time coming.

  18. Yes, we really do character education. Our school follows the Great Expectations model, and it's pretty damn awesome. I highly recommend it.

  19. Poor guy. He's so freaking ugly that having pretty girls throw themselves at him was a novelty and it turned him from a nice guy into a douche bag. He needs to get himself together soon to be ready for the Olympics. Otherwise, his sponsors will dump him and he will have no income source. The networks won't hire a drunk who drives. He will have a tough future if he doesn't change.

  20. And he was just suspended by the swimming association (whatever it's called) for six months. That means no entry into tournaments competition. Not good.

  21. That is seriously the funniest thing ever! Kids can't even read, write or do math after graduating school nowadays, but they're going to learn ethics and character education? Sometimes I wonder if I'm in Bizarro World because this just can't be reality. Do you really think that any of them have actually learned, and/or applied any of those lessons in real life? I guess you must, if you're a teacher. I've got a lot of respect for teachers, they just refuse to give up their idealistic ways despite what must be constant, every day evidence to the contrary. Welp, glad someone is attempting to do it, I guess. Good luck!

  22. No one in the US seems to have mentioned that he was kicked out of the world championship swimming competition in Russia next summer. He's also been suspended for 6 months by USA Swimming.

Phelps is in deep doo-doo for sure, but everyone keeps congratulating him for being "brave" enough to go into rehab. This is expedient "bravery" - if he doesn't get his shit together, he won't have a career. This move has "forced rehab by handlers who want their 10%" written all over it.
