Blind Items Revealed - Old Hollywood

March 13, 2014

Throughout most of his career, this A-list leading man and pretty boy kept his sexuality a secret from the public. Throughout Hollywood, it was widely known that he was gay. His longtime partner since they were high schoolers was an heir to two of the richest families in the country. The actor got his longtime boyfriend a job as a film editor at the studio which the actor did most of his work for. When the boyfriend died a few years ago, he put his collection of explicit love letters in a bank vault, with orders never to be opened.

Tyrone Power and J. Watson Webb Jr.

Yes, you're right. Right after I posted that I figured he could never destroy them. Putting them in a bottle and setting them afloat in the ocean would have been quite romantic.

  5. Orders to destroy them would make more sense, but that would just pique somebody's curiosity.

  14. Read a bio on him.

President Buchanan - who obsessively saved seven volumes of letters - had his niece destroy the letters between him and his lover, the former VP King, US Senator from Alabama. They lived together for almost two decades and ran for the presidency as a package at least twice.

Not uncommon for gays to hide that which ostracized them in their lifetime. By keeping them in a vault, maybe Mr. P imagined a time of greater acceptance.

Fave story from the bio I read, he had a much younger lover endure extensive plastic surgery to resemble a young Ty P. Yep, he effed a younger version of himself. All hail Narcissism.

  15. Definitely bi. He had affairs with Lana Turner and Judy Garland. He was in his early 40's when he died but looked older.

  16. I really don't find Tyrone Power attractive. He has those weird triangle eyebrows. He looks like the salesman of some slightly shifty product.

  20. I think Tyrone Power Jr. was one of the aliens in Cocoon. He also had a daughter Taryn who was quite a beauty. she was in some of those terrible Sinbad movies from the Seventies.

Tyrone Power Sr. used to diddle around with Errol Flynn.

  21. How sad to have lived during a time when what you were was so shameful you'd rather die than live openly. It's really heartbreaking.

  22. Power's Wikipedia entry has zero mention of his being gay.

  23. @Lil P His son Tyrone Jr. went to Deerfield Academy and graduated in my brother's class,1976. It was a two day event with a theatrical production on Saturday night, Guys and Dolls, Tyrone,Jr. played Sky Masterson. He was strikingly handsome and looked exactly like his late father. Linda Christian, his mother did not attend the weekend, nor did anyone else in his family. It made me very sad.

  24. Oh I think he was a looker. Wondering what happens when the old bank building closed (seen any 70 year old banks around?) Or when the bank merges..does the old stuff get moved? Should've had them buried with him, that's touching.

  25. So orders to never be opened??? Why not light a match to them?

  26. Never posted before, but long time reader (well, does "long time reader" qualify as when the Himmmm comments exploded in media?)... I am family of Tyrone Power & will call Romina (his daughter) in morning and ask about this. Or wait, maybe calling your cousin to ask if her dad was really gay, isn't the best way to start the day. Honestly, never heard this rumor at all in the family and there have been some very juicy stories (even juicer than a gay lover from high school)!

  27. Samantha, who cares about the gay or not gay part...I would ask what would motivate him to spare but not share EVER...that is the only interesting part, actually.
