If you thought Robin Thicke couldn't be more smarmy and toolish than you are so very wrong. If you were thinking to yourself that you miss his special brand of toolery than today is your lucky day. Deposition transcripts were made public in the case of Marvin gaye's estate saying Blurred Lines was a ripoff of a Marvin Gaye song. In his deposition, Robin Thicke admitted under oath that the only thing he did on the song was to sing. Yeah, he said before that he helped write it and that he and Pharrell wrote it together. Nope. Pharrell did it all. Oh, and Robin doesn't recall much about the recording session because he was wasted on drugs and booze. Vicodin and Norco generally, but there were others. Robin also admitted that he was wasted on drugs and booze while he was taking care of his son and being interviewed by Oprah. Yep, Robin just keeps on winning in that Charlie Sheen sense of winning. He says that Paula Patton left him because of the drugs. Attorneys for Gaye's estate didn't ask Robin about any cheating or other women. I guess we know why Robin doesn't get to spend much time with his son and definitely not alone. Robin says he has quit drugs but still loves booze.
now we know why Pharrell's been wearing such a Big Hat- that's a lot of secrets he's had to keep under it!!!
ReplyDeleteHa the Gretchen Weiner way
Deletei wonder if pharrell realized that it sounded like marvin gaye's song AFTER he produced it. it is possible that he sub-consciously had that beat in his head and produced a song with it in mind. whatever, pharrell should just give the gaye estate some royalties. he has a boat load of money.
ReplyDeleteReally, im sure this shit goes on all the time.
ReplyDeleteExactly. The latest song scandal is that "All about the bass" song being a ripoff of some Korean song, and both of them being ripoffs of a Phish song. Yawn.
DeleteMore like he doesn't want to pay any money to the Gaye estate, so he's throwing Pharrell under the bus.

Delete+2 @Shelly Shell
DeleteRobin Thicke's douche factor being off the charts is not news, nor is it a surprise.
ReplyDeleteIf I did those celebrity death pool things, I would totally put him in it.
@Shelly, aaah, didnt think of it that way-what a douche. So,being a drug addled, alcoholic, perjuring, cheating fraud who cant be trusted w/his own child is better than parting with any of his ill-earned money..Paula screw around with the windows open to your hearts delight.
ReplyDeleteMarvin Gaye was an awesome talent. These "artists" now sample everything and can't seem to come up with any original ideas.
ReplyDeleteHe'll get sympathy for being a drug addict & what he did during that time.
ReplyDeleteHe will not get sympathy for ripping off Marvin Gaye on top of being a massive dickhead.
I think he's throwing Pharrel under the bus, Robin is just screwing he's "career" over.
Since Robin admitted he didn't write it, but took credit, his portion of royalties should be reassigned to the Gaye estate. That way Robin loses, the estate wins and Pharrell is not impacted. I know this doesn't punish Pharrell for possibly sampling the song, but I like him so prefer to see Robin punished.
ReplyDeleteSo... is he being punished for the song or not?
ReplyDelete*then
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing wrong with sampling a song. People do it all the time with great results. The problems come when they don't pay up to the original song owners and instead just blatantly rip them off.
ReplyDeleteYeah. When I read this last night I totally got the vibe that Robin Thicke was trying to throw Pharrell under the bus. I'm not sure if it's intentional, but it's how it all comes across.
ReplyDeleteWell, we know the music industry is cut-throat and Pharrell has had an amazing year, so I could see people trying to kick him down. He always seems like good people to me. I love that he's been around so long and is still killing it.
If they did steal the tune from Marvin Gaye, they definitely need to pay up.
I hope Robin Thicke gets it together. I know he's had a douchetastic year, but maybe it will spark a turnaround. He is talented. I don't care what y'all say.
Well let's be real not a whole lot of original thought in music, not many Amadeus Mozarts or Ludwig Van's running around.
ReplyDeleteAll Lace no Leather you are a genius
ReplyDeleteI will say this about pharrell because this little rant about thicke bores me to tears. Enty everyone knows that dude is a tool. Snoozeville alert. Seriously.
ReplyDeleteBut anyways back to pharrell. The guy is a creative genius. And this is before pop culture discovered him and he was an unknown misfit making good music and doing some damn good collaborations too. I loved the N.e.r.d. music he put out under that group. He had some awesome collabs with j.t. I would like to see more of that from him but he seems to be steadily climbing the pop bandwagon and leaving the rock & rnb behind. Thats sad and a waste of talent to me.
Blurred lines is really pop-py to me. Never been a big fan really. Also thicke-- before he got famous I loved what he put out. His 1st album was incredible.
Agree! I think Pharrell is massively talented. Thicke? Not so much
DeleteThe only worthy Thicke out there.. Allen's current wife, love her!
ReplyDeleteNot buying that Pharrell didn't realize how close that was to Marvin's sound. Who, who might be any good in the music field doesn't know that song?!?!
Finally something fun has been posted! :-)
ReplyDeletePaula left him because of the drugs? Huh? The drugs just walked all into their crib, attacked Robin, threw him to the floor, and forced themselves up his nose, down his mouth and probably up you know where too. Robin had nothin' whatsoever to do with it?
And wow... He's doing a Justin Timberlake on Pharrell by ripping the pastie off of Pharrell's metal covered boobie, metaphorically speaking.
Wonder how long it will be before he hits the casino circuit opening for his dad?
ReplyDeleteI still like his voice.
ReplyDeleteI just don't understand how a beat can be "owned." Melody, I get. "Lyrics, obvious. Even arrangements.
ReplyDeleteBut beat? As thought here wasn't some group of natives somewhere who came with this already? It's like somebody trying to copyright a waltz 1-2-3 to me.
So Pharrell steals songs and calls them his own? Awesome. LOL
ReplyDeleteEh, they don't sound all that similar to me and it's long been understood that some artists get writing credit even if they weren't involved in the process
ReplyDeleteEven if he throws pharrell under the bus he will still have to pay.
ReplyDelete@All Lace: That is truly genius!!!
ReplyDeleteIn related news, there are also reports that Pharrell not only maybe fudged his testimony, but that he can't even READ SHEET MUSIC! A part of my music obsessed soul has just died...
Pharrell went to band camp and that's how he met one of the guys who made up N.E.R.D.
ReplyDeleteThicke is a decent singer.

Delete@Aoife: I guess Pharrell was too busy with that flute to bother learning how to read sheet music then? Thanks for clearing that up!***
DeleteHere's my take and I'm late to the party but...
ReplyDeleteRobin Thicke gave an interview last year to GQ saying they were listening to the Marvin gaye song in the studio the night they wrote it and were heavily inspired by it. Only Robin has spoken publicly about being inspired by and listening to the song , not Pharrell.
I think they both lawyer ed up and decided Robin would claim he was so high he isn't responsible for what he said and he Nevah wrote that song so he couldn't have been telling the truth anyway. . Pharrell wrote the song and I , Robin Took credit because I wanted to...
Pharrell is off the hook hopefully and Robin career is Ovehh..
I don't think Pharrell was blindsided by Robin testimony I think they and their lawyers decided the I'm high and a drunk and a lier was their best defense strategy. .
If anything Robin is falling on the sword for his stupidity in acknowledging mg in the 1st place. ..
How are we to believe Enty is a lawyer if he seems so surprised that the Gaye estate didn't ask him about cheating on his wife? They aren't worried about that, they're worried about him supposedly using something from one of Marvin Gaye's songs. I don't understand why he doesn't just pull the hip hop card and say he was "sampling". That seems to work for them.
