NFL Watched Both Ray Rice Videos And Still Only Suspended Him Two Games
I know that NFL players collectively bargained that a player who tests positive for pot gets suspended for four games. I get that. They agreed to it and if that is the penalty they bargained for then I'm fine with it. What I am not fine with is the penalty handed down by the NFL to Ray Rice. Last month when the penalty was announced, the general public had only seen the video f Ray Rice dragging his unconscious then girlfriend out of the elevator. No one had seen what happened inside the elevator. There was a lot of outrage that Ray was only given a two game suspension while a pot suspension is four games. Because of the public outcry, the NFL announced new penalties for domestic violence which will get you a six game suspension for a first offense and a lifetime ban for the second, unless of course you are a really good player and then will be reinstated after one year of the lifetime ban.
This morning the video the public had not previously seen of what happened inside the video was released. It shows Ray Rice getting the first hit in and then his girlfriend hitting him back before Ray punched her and knocked her unconscious. Then, the doors to the elevator open and he drags her out and down the hall. Ray and his girlfriend married the following month and she pleaded with the NFL commissioner to not even suspend Ray. I'm not sure how the NFL can possibly say they don't support domestic violence when they let someone get away with this. That is what they did. A two game suspension. Previously the NFL said that this was the only punishment that Ray received because he made a deal with the district attorney who said they would drop all charges if Ray stayed out of trouble so they felt justified in the two game ban.
Are the general public any better than the NFL though? A week from Sunday when Ray plays for the Ravens, I'm sure there will be more Ravens fans applauding him than booing him and those cheers will probably turn to a standing ovation if he scores. Gone will be the memories of him beating his girlfriend. The only thing they will care about is his performance on the field. I think that he should not even get a chance to perform on the field.

in this country if you're even remotely talented at something people will forgive you of almost anything. Look at Chris Brown, R. Kelly, Woody Allen, Sean Penn, Etc. It's fucked up but not at all surprising. He could have murdered that girl and gotten off with probation I'm sure.
ReplyDeleteHow about beyond the game ban ( which should be more than for pot), requiring counseling to deal with the reasons behind the domestic abuse.
ReplyDeleteI'm a Ravens fan and I won't be cheering him on.
ReplyDeleteSheesh, what's with the Rays? We FINALLY got rid of Lewis and now this??
Ravens fan as well. Chill on Ray Lewis, he is our God.
DeleteFuck Ray Rice though.
Don't forget Michael Vick.
ReplyDeleteThe Ravens just erected a statue of Ray Lewis at their stadium--that organization does NOT care about what their players do off the field.
ReplyDeleteThat statue is glorious. He killed a man, he didn't beat his wife. Ray Lewis is literally Baltimore. You've seen the Wire, I'm sure.
Delete@Bacon, at least we have our Ray!
ReplyDeleteCan't disagree, @jack ducky. It's a messed up system, but sports players and celebs in general get more passes than regular folk. Steubenville brought that to the forefront, and it's still happening.
When they did virtually nothing to a rapist, I stopped paying attention.
ReplyDeleteAs much as I love the NFL, I'm well aware that they do not value women.
If you have a contract with the NFL, you can do anything to a woman and walk away. It's disgusting.
It's the same here Kno Won: our footballers are frequently in the news for sexual assault, rape, violence, and I think shove the game bans up yer bum - fire them and then make sure they have to face a judge and criminal charges.
DeleteAnd I read somewhere else, maybe buzzfeed (?), that at a press conference, they had her apologize as well for her roll in the fight. Ridiculous. And the poor girl still married him a month after this. What is going through her head? The money is worth it? Gawd.
ReplyDeleteThe mistake was letting him off from a legal perspective. if they had followed through and charged and convicted him, NFL would have no choice than releasing him. i blame legal system for adoring any celebrity and holding them to different standard.

ReplyDeleteTmz is saying the nfl didn't see this video until today.
ReplyDeletehttp://m.tmz.com/index.html#Article/2014/09/08/nfl-we-never-saw-ray-rice-elevator-video-until-today/
DeleteOh yeah, here it is... http://www.buzzfeed.com/rachelzarrell/ray-rice-punch-elevator-janay-palmer
ReplyDeleteActually the Ravens tweeted this on May 23rd:
ReplyDeleteJanay Rice says she deeply regrets the role that she played the night of the incident.
12:10 PM - 23 May 2014
Because it was her fault she got knocked out, right?
She MARRIED HIM a month later and begged the NFL not to punish him.
Does this stupid bitch really think that's the last time he's going to raise his hand to her?
Um. Oh, never mind.
DeleteTrue dat 7!
ReplyDeleteI agree Karen.
An interesting 'he said, she said'
ReplyDeleteAn employee of the hotel -- which just shut down for good -- tells TMZ Sports he was working there at the time and says the NFL saw the elevator footage before imposing the 2-game suspension.
UPDATE -- The NFL says it did NOT see the newly-released elevator footage before it imposed a 2 game suspension on Rice.

You guys do realize that often when a woman tries to leave an abusive guy they tend to get murdered right? you don't think he's been threatening her? to call her a stupid bitch and assume the only reason she stayed with him is money is really fucking dumb.
ReplyDeleteI agree - no need to name call on the chick. Sometimes even the smartest women that you would never imagine get wrapped up in abusive relationships.
DeleteYup. Abusers don't just hit -- it's often also emotional and mental abuse, extremely manipulative. I'm sure he begs her forgiveness every time and swears it'll never happen again and, because she loves him, she gives him one chance after another. Oh, and now that they're married, she can't be made to testify against him for this or future assaults and battery.
DeleteAgreed to original comment
DeleteExactly Duckie. Their life is one of fear, entrapment, no self esteem and learned helplessness. Often too the perp has ensured to isolate and estrange the victim from their family and friends, leaving them without any support.
DeleteI have to agree that it's quite possible she's staying with him and apologizing out of fear.
ReplyDeleteIf you wake up thinking "I hope I don't get punched in the face today", it colors everything you do.
That video is just appalling.
ReplyDeleteWhat I want to know is if this is the first time the NFL has seen the video, WHO SUPPRESSED IT?
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's a coincidence the video came to light AFTER the hotel went out of business. Disgusting that they covered for his abusive ass.
DeleteI wrote a letter to the commissioner and the head coach when Michael Vick was busted. Looks like another round a letters is due. For the Raven fans on here, who are the top guys/coaches/owner etc to write a letter to?

ReplyDelete@brenda, I doubt it's the first time they've seen it regardless of what they're claiming.
ReplyDeleteWhoever said it above is absolutely right - you might get beaten if you stay, you risk getting killed if you leave.
ReplyDeleteTruly abusive situations are frightening, scary, and mindfucks all at once. A guy that is scary enough to punch your ass out AND get your bosses in on the whole making you apologize for it thing? That guy is scary enough to kill.
What's really sad is that he did that to her in a public place. It was a casino elevator. What is he doing to her at home? Can this woman even leave the house at times? What about their child? I read somewhere that they do have a kid together.
ReplyDeleteA lifetime of luxury and minor fame is worth a beating or a few beatings apparently.
ReplyDeleteAt least now we know she has absolutely no self worth.
Wow, that was very disturbing. Sad how we allow this guy to get away with this sort of behavior and she's so scared she apologizes! That's the nature of domestic abuse. Watch for a bigger fall out now.
ReplyDeleteAnd BTW hopefully some charges that result in him getting some help for his abusive tendencies.

Give him the Elephant Man treatment. Throw him in a cage with 2 pissed off orangutans.
ReplyDeleteFootball = brain damage lottery.
ReplyDeleteDisgusting that the players get a stiffer penalty for weed--weed!
Please don't judge her for not leaving him stating for money. & fame. This whole thing plus her apology is classic domestic situation. Highs and lows. Right now it's all good he's on his best behaviour sincere apology regrets it ever happened plus this publicity keeps him from doing it again... For now. You don't know how hard it is to leave ANY abusive situation until you've tried. A lot of mind fuckery goes on guilt and shame self doubt and worries about future.
ReplyDeleteSo he gets let go from the Ravens AFTER the full video is published. Stay classy, NFL.
ReplyDeleteHis contract has been terminated.
ReplyDeleteShocker! A fake football (hand lemon would define it better) player doing something awful.
ReplyDeleteMy definition of that boring sport as "steroid filled crime prone African Americans running two minutes out of fifteen" proves right once again.
Lol "hand lemon"! The hand lemon is only actually in play for 12 minutes of each 2-3 hr game...it's pretty boring.
ReplyDeleteHis contract has been terminated. Hopefully the woman isn't the next thing that gets terminated. Because it was all 'her fault'. Basta.
ReplyDeletePiece of shit. And she's an idiot for staying with him. This will not end well.
ReplyDeleteWhat I find most disturbing, that is hard to say with how he punched her out, is he stood over her for a few seconds like he was a prize fighter.
ReplyDeleteThen dragged her unconscious body out of the elevator and dumped her face first on the ground.
He didn't even act like he was concerned for her or upset with what he did.
No excuse for what he did but to show no regret is very disturbing.
Acted like oh well she knocked out again.
Just wow.
He also kicks her after dragging her out of the elevator!
DeleteMaybe I'm football stupid, but why is it up to the nfl to dole out punishment? the team is privately owned and decides who to hire so they should be able to fire too. And agree w/jewsco..saw this on news and he looked at and dragged her like an old rug, really sick.
ReplyDeleteYeah I just came to post he got cut from team and NFL indefinitely but I guess I'm late. Either way I watched the video on tmz this morning and he's sick..
ReplyDeleteThe NFL doesn't care about women, but they still want their money.
ReplyDeleteAnd why when the second video came out? They already knew what he did inside when the 1st one was released.
ReplyDeleteJack Ducky, I called her a stupid bitch and she is a stupid bitch.
ReplyDeleteI didn't say she stayed with him for money though I was thinking it. Though of course plenty of OTHER stupid bitches stay with dead broke abusers, so I guess she might just be staying for "love."
Now that he's been fired by the Ravens she's in even more danger because he's going to be one pissed off man, and he'll blame it on her.
I do feel sorry for her. But she made her bed and she lay in it so - god bless her and may she have the sense to get out before he kills her.
I watched the video and read some on-line reports and I think maybe one way she excused it is that when she fell, she hit her head on the elevator railing and THAT knocked her out. So maybe she and her (now) husband agreed that oh, the actual punch wasn't so bad, it was the misfortune that she slammed against the railing on the way down.
ReplyDeleteThe Ravens only terminated him because the PR fallout from standing behind him after that video came out was worse than losing him.
At least they DID fire him. Just like that CEO of CenterPlate who abused his dog in a codo elevator.
The people have spoken!
I do love social media. Sometimes.
codo = condo
ReplyDeleteSo, my take-away is you can kill people and you'll get a statue in your honor. You can kill dogs in gruesome ways and LAUGH about it and you can still be a starting quarterback in the NFL. And you can knock your girlfriend unconscious and still keep your job - but make sure there's no video of it.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, it was disturbing how little concern he showed for her - throughout that 4 minute video.
Here's something I don't understand. Even before the video of the incident inside the elevator was released today ... this is what we knew:
ReplyDeleteRay Rice dragged his UNCONSCIOUS fiancee from a casino elevator and dumped her on the floor outside.
She was conscious and walking when she got into the elevator.
Does it take a GENIUS to figure out how she became unconscious on an elevator ride with only one other person in the elevator?
I mean, OBVIOUSLY he knocked her unconscious. But until we saw the video, that was only worth a 2-game suspension.
SMFH
@Bee Haven
ReplyDeleteYep, same here, Bee. Premiership footballers treat women like garbage and everyone makes excuses for them.
Shit they should have given a lifetime ban to that piece of shit Michael Vick for his crimes against animals. Nope in the end sports (especially football & basketball) are always going to win over anything those fuckers do. If you can consistently score that goal or make that basket, it will excuse a multitude of sins. Fire the fuckers man. Zero tolerance for these assholes.
ReplyDeleteThe NFL is disgusting.
ReplyDelete@MinPinGirl, I totally agree re: Michael Vick. I almost start to foam at the mouth when his name is mentioned. As far as paying his debt to society? NEVER, in my book. I am just waiting for his NFL career to be over because he's not going to get any celebrity endorsements, and he has tons of hangers-on, no job skills, no money management skills, so I figure he'll go broke sooner or later - and it can't be soon enough in my book.
ReplyDeleteIt disgusts me that the Eagles signed him.
Now, I would be sickened, and would never watch it, if video existed of what he did to the dogs. The testimony of his co-defendant was graphic enough. Michael Vick personally killed dogs in very cruel ways, and LAUGHED while he did it.
But if Ray Rice's career could survive video of him dragging his unconscious fiancee out of an elevator, but not the video of him KNOCKING her unconscious ... I don't think Michael Vick's career could have survived the video of what he actually did to those sweet dogs.
Who were killed for basically not being aggressive.
The dogs that were rescued from his Bad Newz Kennels were so traumatized.
I happen to love pitbulls. OMG, there is nothing sweeter than a pitbull puppy, and most pitbulls that I have met - even the big mean ones with the butchered ears - the biggest danger they present is of licking you to death. They're so human-friendly. If they're raised right (and even if they're not, most of the time). Pitbulls were known as the "nanny dog" in early 20th century America, and have appeared on the cover of "Time" three times - and NOT for being aggressive.
But as Chris Rock said, "What the hell did Michael Vick do? Pitbulls ain't (sic) even real dogs! Dogs have never been good to black people!"
Supposedly Chris Rock was up for the lead in the Richard Pryor biopic. His bad luck that Richard's widow Jennifer Lee Pryor is heavily involved in animal rescue (I'm proud that she's one of my Facebook friends). I mean, she personally rescues dogs. She's an amazing person. She wrote this back to him:
"For your information, Chris, what Michael Vick did was to torture, drown, electrocute and murder dogs all for fun and for profit! He went to prison for felony animal cruelty! That's what he did! . . . These types of comments only encourage abuse and misunderstanding of this breed, as well as actual dog-fighting. Clearly this part of your latest stand-up routine would not make Richard laugh!"
Actually, Jennifer was wrong about what Michael Vick went to prison for. Unbelievably, he was convicted only of fighting pitbulls, he was never charged with, and he never admitted, to killing any of them.
Oh, and he whined that his little girl wanted a dog so guess what - the judge lifted the ban and Michael Vick now has a pet dog.
Lawdy me.
No one went for the crap story the NFL was trying to sell and Rice's career is pretty much over.
ReplyDeleteGood.
I guess they put pressure on her to say she felt bad about causing so much trouble and who knows what was going on in her head to marry a man who would coldcock you.
I hope she is somewhere safe because a POS like this, his career over, would beat her because after all she made him do it.
She seemed pretty feisty in the video. He hit her, she hit him back, he knocked her out. Then when she finally was assisted to a sitting position just outside the elevator ... she sat there for quite a while, pretty much unable to get up. She was really in bad shape. Then somebody (female) came over and patted her on the back and hugged her - probably a staffer. Meanwhile Ray is just standing there, not helping her, nothing. He took something out of her hands, couldn't tell what it was - purse? something about that size but a weird shape. Then finally when he approached her she angrily waved him off.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if he bothered to take her to the ER that night to check for a concussion. She could have died in her sleep. I read that they went home together that night, after BOTH being booked for battery at the police station.
They were high school sweethearts, they met at age 16 and have a child together.
Leigh Steinberg, celebrity agent, was very blunt about how he felt about this (before Rice was fired). He said that NFL players have an added responsibility to be careful since they're so strong. He also said he should have been fired.
I wonder if Leigh Steinberg has ever represented someone accused of a violent crime ... and how he would solve the ethical and moral dilemma of basically being on the guy's payroll while personally thinking he should be fired.
Who cares, blown out of proportion... she probably had it coming... and she married him after the fact. How can anyone actually care about this? Women are stupid bitches.
ReplyDelete
