  3. OK, is this an Enty rating or a Mr X rating?
    A+ list R&B Diva lasting 20+ years?
    Maybe it's just Monday morning.

  5. i'll agree with the mary guess.

  6. Mary J. Blige debuted in 1992. Mariah debuted in 1990.

    I'll say Anita Baker.

  7. Just asking - Is MJB really A+ list?
I don't see it, but I know nothing about ticket sales and what have you.

  9. In the world of R&B--Mary J. is a contemporary legend. Her My Life album is considered a classic in those circles. She's very much A-list.

  10. But is Anita a diva? I know she struggled to get accliam. Patti Austin?

  11. Personally, I think of (I admit to being an old person, OK?) Aretha Franklin as an A+ list R&B Diva with superior longevity.
In my heart, MJB has not reached that status.
Then again, A List has nothing to do with my heart ~;^

  12. Anita Baker was quite popular from 1986 to 2004. Millions of albums sold, eight Grammys, and some crossover appeal.

There was a big fallout over an album she recorded that she said had some strange noise on it. I believe there was a lawsuit from that.

But yes, Anita would have been considered an A-list diva for a while.

  13. Do you know what would be really great?
    If this was Donna Summer.
But I assume Mr X knows she hails from the 70s.

  14. Could also be Lauren Hill.

  15. @ Kno: Donna Summers has been dead for 2 yrs.

@Tricia: everyone you are mentioning didn't really hit the scene until the 90's.

  16. hey Kno
    Donna died in 2012

  17. Soooo, @Kno, that WOULD be really great!! teehee, now THAT would be a BI!!

  18. Anita baker is a HUGE diva. Up there with Aretha's in terms of divaness but at least Aretha's earned it. She lived next door to Steve Yzerman in grosse Pointe park, and her house was in foreclosure a few years ago.

  19. Janet Jackson came to mind but she wasn't really R&B

  22. R&B Divas big in the 80's

    Sade
    Diana Ross
    Tina Turner
    Janet Jackson
    Whitney(dead)
    Anita Baker
    Patti Labelle

Tina and Janet are married so let's rule them out. I don't see Diana or Anita with a woman and I don't see Sade with anyone. I'll go with Patti Labelle whom i've heard gay rumors about for years.

  23. Whats with all this Mr X business?

  24. thanks@Jack D!
Diana & I'd think Tina Turner are 60's,70's,80's,90's,00's, Permanent A+'s- icons

  25. I thought Patti LaBelle had a longtime guuurlfriend & it was no secret???

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think this is Patti Labelle.

Mary J is definitely A in R&B, but she really was only 90s. "I'm Going Down" is a jam!! Might have to spottily that album, it's been too long.

Lauren, is really only a 90s girl.

Anita - isn't really a diva is she?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Anita is definitely a Diva, or was one when she was in her prime. I think that's part of her downfall, that's how bad she was; and racist-talkin too.

I do love her songs, but SHE is such a turn off.

And I can see her munching some rug, that's fo shore.

  28. Well Rolo this is a Mr.X blind which by definition is obvious answers hoping to catch those of us off guard if we didn't know. Like for instance I was unaware that Patti was a lesbian.

So the answer is LaBelle kids.

  29. MJB was on the Breakfast Club last week with her husband talking about their relationship. They seemed very much in love to me.

    I'll guess Taylor Dane

    ReplyDelete
  30. Miss Labelle had hits in the 70's, had a comeback in the 80's.

    ReplyDelete
  31. MJB is totally A list

I like the Janet Jackson guess!! She was definitely R&B

    ReplyDelete
  32. Countervail - i thought Taylor Dayne as well, but she was an out bi-sexual in the late 90's/early 00's.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Sheila E, but was she ever above C list?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Patti LaBelle did not have hits in the 70's. She didn't blow up until the early 80's. It was not a comeback. It was an introduction of sorts. She had one hit as a part of the group LaBelle in 1975 with "Lady Marmalade" and that was pretty much the extent of their success. She didn't get really big as a solo artist (or at all, really) until 1982 or 83 with "If Only You Knew", her first #1 on the R&B charts and after then the hits kept coming and she went on to become the star and diva we know today.

  35. Anita Baker. Her debut album was named The Songstress. She will always be A+.

  36. Patti labelle and the blue belles had a #1 hit in 1974 with Lady Marmalade.

    I think this is Braxton.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I shit you not... Look what's the headline on channel 7's website tonight in detroit

    http://www.wxyz.com/news/local-news/investigations/anita-baker-accused-of-failing-to-pay-rochester-lawyer-facing-150000-lawsuit

    ReplyDelete
  38. Toni Braxton didn't hit until the 90's.

I don't think Tina Turner was R&B and Janet Jackson can't sing without autotune so she doesn't belong in the company of any of these women.

    It's probably Chaka Khan

    ReplyDelete
  39. There have been rumors about Patti for years. An old friend of mine who did gigs where the original group performed around Philly and South Jersey said flat out that she and her group were all gay.
