Joan Rivers Is On Life Support

Not much news is coming from the hospital room of Joan Rivers. What is known is that she is on life support after being placed in a medically induced coma. No one is telling if Joan would be able to survive on her own if she was taken off life support or if she is going to stay on it for some time to try and recover. No one is telling if she will recover. The family is planning on suing the doctor who performed the throat surgery that landed the 81 year old in the hospital after she stopped breathing and suffered cardiac arrest during what was called a minor procedure on her vocal chords. Melissa Rivers says that the family is touched by all the support for Joan and the hospital where she is located has been overwhelmed by the number of flowers and cards sent to the Fashion Police host.

Here's hoping for the best with Joan.
Poor Melissa. I went through this with my mom. Hardest decision I ever had to make in my life.

  3. Any medical procedure, no matter how minor, carries a risk. As sad as it is, unless there was truly gross negligence, I'm surprised about discussion of a lawsuit already. Tough decision for Melissa...

  6. The NY Daily News and at this point I figure the NY press is going to have the more up to date story says they are starting to take her out of her medically induced coma.

"Doctors began lifting the feisty funny lady from her medically induced coma Sunday at Mount Sinai Hospital as Melissa Rivers, her only child, waited to see how the legendary comic will respond.

“The waking-up process has begun and will take until Tuesday,” a source close to the family told the Daily News. “There is real concern that the part of the brain that controls motor skills may have been compromised, leaving her as either a vegetable or in a wheelchair.”

Now they would be taking brain scans already to assess when to take someone out of the medical induced coma - in the case of someone with a traumatic brain injury they can see that the brain swelling has gone down sufficiently and how activity in the brain is functioning, in the case where someone was deprived of oxygen to the brain I don't know how that works but it seems they already know where there is potential or actual damage.

So from this hard to tell if there is still some hope because if I were Joan I would not want to live life as a vegetable or invalid, go out on a high note. But sometimes family members can't let go but I also saw a number of people online saying they were in medically induced comas for quite sometime and came out relatively OK, may have needed some rehab but got back to almost normal.

I still don't understand how a clinic could not have handled the breathing issue there - someone else said that they should have known to intubate her immediately- a nurse can do that.

  7. I think the other thing people are saying is that at 81 even if she seemed otherwise healthy you should not do a scope in a clinic, it should have done at a hospital.

I know I might think twice about where I get a scope I am already terrified about all the stories of scopes tearing something.

    ReplyDelete
  8. And my feeling is the places that specialize in scopes are probably on the whole better at it than many hospitals, the more you do the better you are at it, except I guess if something goes wrong but in Canada I don't know that we allow that in clinics anyway.

      I wish them peace.

    3. The thing is most people constantly talk trash about celebs. They are ALL a parent or child to someone. I don't wish death on anyone but not because they are a parent or child. Just because they are human beings.

  10. Yara, I find the fact that you made this comment on a gossip blog funny. It's one thing to be a horrible person (like myself or anyone else here) but at least I don't pretend I'm not. You're an idiot.

  11. Someone's grandmother. And Joan had two sides to her as most people do even nasty comics - she did a lot of stuff for charity and other people that most people have no idea about.

Maybe the stone throwing could wait until the body is cold.

  12. Did anyone see the tweet Guiliana sent yesterday trying to prove that she eats? She was promoting her own restaurant and it was terribly timed. I just love Joan so much and hope she's ok but no way she'd be happy in even the most fabulous gold plated wheelchair anyone's ever seen :( She got through some horrible tragedies by making jokes and I think she's amazing for it.

    ReplyDelete
  13. How am I an "idiot," and where are these stones I am supposedly throwing? It's one thing to mock what a celebrity is wearing on the red carpet and poke fun at them when they are out in public doing crazy things. It's another to tell the Cleveland kidnap victims that they should shut up about their plight because they got to live rent-free for 10 years.

She's old and sick, and that is indeed sad for her family. She did a lot to pave the way for women in comedy, and for that I commend her. However, that doesn't mean she gets a free pass for all the horrible things she's said about people who really didn't deserve it.

    1. So if an actor played no roles but a villan they'd be better of dead? Comedy is performing. Performing an act. Its scripted. That is most likely not joan rivers opinion. The issue is that you're showing a great deal of disrespect and a severe lack of empathy. This is a woman who changed the game of comedy and broke down numerous barriers for women everywhere. Shes made entertainment history and is an icon to people everywhere. So while shes in a medically induced coma you're slamming the persona of joan rivers. Shes alot more than some shitty jokes. I dont watch fashion police. I think she goes to far. But theres still such a thing as showing respect.

  16. *Salutes* I'm a Joan Ranger, but I'm reading contradicting reports. I read on TMZ that Melissa was planning on taking Joan off of Life Support as she believes that if given the chance, Joan will fight her way back and make a full recovery...this article alarmed me as much as I do think Joan is a fiesty 81 yo woman, she has been thro a traumatic event and I don't feel as confident as Mel

  17. Can we talk?
    **Ducking

I agree with Yara. My condolences for the tragedy of a daughter and family in this trying time. But Ms. Rivers' style had less diversity than a one trick pony. She obviously suffered from low self esteem to make her entire schtick about tearing down others based on shallow observations on appearance. For that, I feel sorry for her, but I do not think her brand of humor does much for women or human kind in general and I do not think she is the least bit funny or charming. It's okay to have an opinion, but being a mean girl until your 80? I don't see why everyone feels the need to champion such nastiness, just because she is ill. My two cents. Feel free to dismantle it; attack away.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Shame there wasn't a whole show dedicated to insulting Joan the way she has done with others. I wonder how "funny" she would think that is. And to the person who said it is her job and then compared her to an actor. I don't believe anyone could be that stupid to think like that. Joan insults living real people. An Actor is playing against another fictional character. No comparison.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Joan does what she does for the love of comedy. You may not find it funny but the only way comedy can thrive is if we let comics try what they need to try to get to the funny. Yes, some of her stuff falls flat and seems cruel but there are so many times when she was right on. Before this past year she was even able to point the cruelty towards herself.

You may not like her comedy and find it cruel but that does not make her an evil person who deserves to die before her time. Also, many male comics are just as cruel as she is but don't get half the hate. It probably hits you more because she is a woman and we are so conditioned to think that women should be sugar and spice and everything nice. She has paved the way for a lot of women in comedy and women in general who say f*ck the conditioning.

Hoping the 'ole bag makes it out just fine and is able to offend people and make us laugh for many more years.

  22. I'm a big fan of hers. She has been a groundbreaking female comic for 50 years and a hard working entertainer. (I also find the "living rent free" joke hilarious, so I guess I'm as bad as she is.)

She's an icon and a legend. Get well soon, Joan.

  23. I do find it funny all the people saying nasty things about Joan saying she deserves bad kharma but aren't you doing the same thing and the kharma may boomerang back on you. If you really believe in all that. I don't because if kharma worked a lot of people would have been dead a lot sooner.

Because no one knows how anyone of is going to judged in the end if you even believe in any of that. Just how one is judged on earth after you die and hate to say it but many people love Joan. Just a fact. As many have said she often says the things other people wish they had the guts to say or are thinking in their head. That is what comics do.

Because I guess many of us have a nasty streak in us too.

  29. Can someone tell me how she was ground breaking? Phyllis Diller? Roseanne Barr? Ellen? Lily Tomlinson? Yes. I see no broken ground in grinding, scathing commentary, rape jokes, and ass backwards politics cloaked in comedy. I still do not wish her ill, honestly, but ground breaking? No. Carson liked her because she was a woman Leno; willing to crack jokes but not "funnier" than him. I find them all pretty---YAWN! She was non threatening to the male ego, and that was her appeal. She never broke ground like Barr. I just find that to be so odd a claim. Perhaps you like her comedy, and that is totally cool. But she was no innovator in comedy. She was a tool used for the sake of a false sense of diversity in the male dominated world of comedy. And she's mean. That isn't new, women have always been mean to other women; and there ain't nothing funny about that.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Joan makes jokes about herself as much or more than she does other people! Jesus people, you're not going to like 100% about every single person or else you'd be looking in the mirror. Just enjoy the good parts and ignore what you don't. Hell even Hitler brought back the Olympics! Joan broke ground for all women who STILL aren't 100% equal in show business. Would Enty be posting the pap pics each day if it wasn't for her? Comics try to make you laugh. What a wonderful thing is that? If it works, great! If the joke doesn't, don't make a person feel like shit for trying to get you to smile. Just move on and wish for her as you'd wish the same for yourself. The jokes that get the biggest laugh are the ones that are borderline and that's what Joan strives for. Your biggest laugh.

A medically induced coma would be indicated for severe trauma/burns.
Not for a very old woman who stopped breathing while under anesthesia.
Surely we still have medical professionals in the CDAN family who can speak to this. Melissa is issuing most of these statements (generally vague statements from hospital spokesman) and she's contradicting herself. Did they induce a coma, then put the old bitch on life support? Other way around? Now they're taking her out of the coma , but she's still on life support? Not sure what they're up to, but the information presented does not add up. Joan and Melissa are in the same class as the K Trash and Sharon Osbourne.

    1. Actually, it's not an uncommon protocol. My mother went into cardiac arrest in 2009 (I was sitting in the hospital room talking to her when it happened), and as quickly as the medical staff responded they also put her into a medically induced coma. They'll use the "waking up" process to determine if she's able to support herself without mechanical assistance, or if there is a need for additional brain scans to determine active function. It's a very precarious process, but they'll do everything they can to try to being her back to 100%, or as close as they can get.

The motives behind producers featuring her on The Tonight Show, Candid Camera and The Ed Sullivan Show don't matter, what matters is that she was a female comedian on prime-time television, telling acerbic, self-deprecating, cynical jokes, defying the persistent stereotype of women as sweet.

  39. I actually had to create an account just to comment on some comments here.

Joan Rivers is a comedic genius, not just for a female comedian but for a comedian of either sex. The fact that she's female just makes her more impressive. We should cherish her because the newer generation of "comedians" simply aren't funny. They superficially lampoon controversial comedians and don't understand that geniuses like Joan Rivers aren't coming from a place of cruelty and that you must be funny if you're going to be controversial. What kind of bubble-headed simpleton do you have to be to think Joan Rivers was being malicious about the Cleveland victims.

Increasingly our world is becoming suffocating and lacking laughter, and much of that is likely due to bubble-headed simpletons given too much voice via the internet who are so void of humor and insight to realize we can laugh at a clever remark that underscores the inhumanity of a tragedy and it doesn't mean we are condoning the tragedy.

Everyone's allowed their opinion, but those who seize this moment of Rivers fighting for her life to shriek about perceived slights and offenses from her comedy act are the truly offense and wildly hypocritical beings who provide nothing to humanity except shrill disingenuous tedium.

As for the person who keeps posting across the internet that Rivers should be put in a Gaza hospital...why? Maybe YOU should be placed in a Gaza hospital and you'll be screaming for Jewish medical care in no time, you know the same Jewish care you probably benefit from now while apologizing for terrorist groups who want nothing less than to obliterate the Jewish people.

Oh, and Joan Rivers is the first person to take shots at herself. Clearly you've never seen her act beyond the sensationalistic news headlines that you use to feed your professional victimhood.

  42. "Gypsy," your ugliness is surpassed only by your historic ignorance about Joan Rivers's career.

Joan Rivers got higher ratings than Johnny Carson when she hosted The Tonight Show. She earned her place and had to fight for it tooth & nail. It wasn't a question of him "liking" her. They had no personal relationship. Although if you watch videos of her appearances with him, he was practically peeing in his pants from laughter.

The rest of your ranting insanity is even more ignorant. Don't even know what your ramblings about Jay Leno mean, but he and Joan Rivers don't get along, and she never appeared on his show. Joan Rivers was never seen as the "pretty" one and her act was always based on that premise. If all they'd needed had been a pretty face, there were many faces they could've hired.

Again, your kooky rants only highlight that you know nothing about Joan Rivers and are just an ugly person not shy about exposing your ignorance and agenda and hypocrisy online.

She shone as a substitute host for the Tonight Show, and in fact was often better at it than Johnny Carson. Her own talk show was, at times really very good. That is more than half her career right there. She wasn't always mean to celebrities, and her humor wasn't always that bitchy...but she did grow with the times, and there must have been an audience for what she was doing or it wouldn't have lasted.

I think her schtick was all apart of her master plan to be honest. Whether the comic is male or female, people won't talk about somebody who doesn't make waves. Think about it. The only reason she's been working this long is because her proponents are waiting to see what she says next so they can praise her, while her detractors do the opposite. Yes the rape jokes and wishing death on Palestinians are terrible, but would anybody be talking about her if all she did was curse? Probably not

The original point was refuting the comment that Rivers was made permanent host of the Tonight Show because Carson happened to like her personally.

Since we're focusing on this, she's long commented they did not socialize and he barely even spoke with her during commercial breaks. Doesn't mean it wouldn't personally hurt when he shunned her professionally as it would've for any comedian at that time.

Her face (what became of it/what she did to it) always kind of freaked me out. and 2) Every time I saw her on TV, the jokes I saw were mean-sprited and I just didn't find them funny. She struck me as a "one trick pony" comedienne. I am aware that she made endless jokes about her own plastic surgery but that "10 years free rent" remark was just not cool.
After her husband committed suicide, I wonder if she joked about that. I wonder how she would feel about someone making a joke about her own deeply personal tragedy.
That being said, I hope she does recover. If she does not, at least her family has an opportunity to say "goodbye". Some people don't get that opportunity.

  65. Shame there wasn't a whole show dedicated to insulting Joan the way she has done with others.

    Right here, @Carol:

To refuse to acknowledge that Joan Rivers was a trailblazer for women in comedy because of not liking her brand of comedy is disingenuous.

And ask Roseanne Barr if her career would have been possible without Joan Rivers preceding her. And if you've only seen her on TV doing her domestic goddess schtick you have no idea how blue and how biting she gets.

  66. "Gypsy" just came upon your anthology of loony semi-coherent rantings, one after another after another! Seek help, you obsessive kook.

  69. Meanwhile Guiliana Rancic was posting ridiculous selfies and happy posts all over her Instagram until everybody told her to show some respect. Cue the 'hopeful prayer' photo.

  70. Also cosign everything @Yoj and @First Time said. I'm laughing remembering all her jokes that are mentioned. Hope she pulls through. Can't imagine a roast for her after this, or the jokes she will create. She always took major shots at herself.

  71. She will be in hell.

    Carol, get a grip.

  74. I love Joan. Joan has a great shtick for her job and is a wonderful person in real life. Hope she pulls through and if not she had a good run. I'm praying for her. My thoughts are with Melissa and cooper as well.

  75. I love Joan. Her work to help up and coming comedians, male and female, speaks for itself. So does her charity work. Everyone has spoken of her with the greatest respect.

There was an article about her recently (I think the NY Times) that touched on her personal life as Mrs. Edgar Rosenberg which is how she lived her life away from the cameras.

There would be no red carpet shows without her. All that hoopla before the major award shows? Joan pioneered that.

I wish I was surprised about Giuliana's behavior but I'm not. There can be no Fashion Police with out Joan.

    I wish her the best.

  77. She's a commedienne and is NOT going to hell. She didn't murder, rape or torture anyone, so stop saying that shit.

  78. Guiliana is not my fave at all. I do not even like to see her on screen, although I do kind of like her husband, kind of.

Fashion Police will never be the same so it would just be over. It was always her when it came to Oscars, Emmy Fashion Hosting. She made that genre.

  79. Jumping on the comments regarding coming out of a coma, my husband suffered a grade 5 brain haemorrhage 14 weeks ago due to a burst aneurysm, and spent two weeks in a medically induced coma. He was given a 10% chance of survival and we were told in no uncertain terms that if he did survive his two operations that he would definitely end up in a persistive vegetative state. 14 weeks later he is in a rehabilitation centre undergoing intense therapies and should be home by Christmas. The damage he has suffered has thankfully been 'minimal' - by that I mean he can hold conversations, and is beginning to walk again. Whether he will return to work, we don't know , but we're just thankful he's alive. Iobviously he's considerably younger than Joan, but my point is sometimes we should hold out a little on pulling the plug.

  80. I read a tiny blurb the other day about JR being in the hospital and also a headline over the weekend about her being critical but stable and until today I had no idea she was actually on life support.

I wish her the best and I hope Melissa has good friends to lean on. She is very close with her mother and with no siblings, father, and being divorced she'll have to make any decisions on her own. I've always liked Joan. Her sense of humor isn't always the same as mine but she has always stuck me as someone who has been through a lot and has just kept moving forward.

    @smadger Badger,

I can't even imagine what these last few months have been like for you and your family. I'm sorry that your husband had an aneurysm but what a miracle to be on his way to recovery and beating those odds.

    That really makes you think.

  81. LOL @ MissyRocks thinking Howard is nice in real life. Only people he associates with are on payroll and the fake Hollywood friends.

Also, it has been years since he was a dick to anyone besides his dwindling fanbase. He is too scared of pissing off celebs and being PC anymore.
