This A- list/B+ list mostly movie actor, who is an Academy Award winner/nominee is really ticking off his co-stars and producers because he won't actually do any press for his upcoming movie. He is limiting himself to three red carpet appearances with no questions and won't even sit through the screenings. He considers himself above doing press. Umm, that is your job.

Didn't this blind get revealed last week as Ryan Reynolds? At least something very similar. Neither one of thees a-holes can afford to have a movie that bombs.

DeleteTruly when you get finished filming I would guess you'd just want to relax and an endless cycle of travel to all those cities, no matter how glamorous could be very taxing.

ReplyDeletePromotion is important to the success of the movie. Even if you are tired. It's what you get paid for. He's acting like a privileged, spoiled brat. If he keeps up this behavior, he will not continue to get parts.
ReplyDeleteIs it just me or is there a rumor that his not on this planet shtick is not an act and he has legit mental health issues? Not to mention past/present drug issues possibly self-medicating? If that's the case then maybe he's just taking care of himself. Maybe he loves his work but can't handle all the hoopla that comes with it and doesn't wanna end up like PSH...or HIS BROTHER.

Like FrenchGirl said, it's probably in his contract, which would still piss people off. I'm thinking that if your hire Joaquin, you know about the boatload of crazy that goes with it.
ReplyDeleteYou can be an "ac-TOR" or thespian and still promote your movies. We can list all the great actors who have no issue doing the promotion too. That said JP is a talented and unique actor for all his quirks. Loved him in Walk the Line. I can see that many directors would forgive this if they feel JP is the man for the role in their film even if the producers aren't happy.
ReplyDeleteMost actors do not work that hard even at the A level. They work 1 - 3 movies a year which means they might work on a film six months out of the year and depending on the movie they may not even work that hard during the filming. Now the actors that do tv, movies and plays or back to back to films like Fassbender for instance and happily promote each and every project they are in, those are the actors who work their arses off and they still have time for exotic vacations.

ReplyDeleteHe is a brilliant actor. One of the best of his generation. However, he has competiiton from the likes of Christian Bale, who is capable of playing ball. Jared Leto is hot now. Joaquin is overdue for an Oscar but needs to play ball--or just be so superior to everyone else.

I wonder at exactly what point he decided he's too good for it all? Was it after he played Johnny Cash? Dude, you were great in that movie but YOU are not Johnny for real. Was it after he did that ridiculous flick where he's in love with his phone? Raj had already done that on TBBT btw. I can understand if you don't want people approaching you while you are actually filming. If you go all method and have to "become" the character. I get that. I don't get how actors think that because they are actors, that somehow makes them above doing their jobs. He's a douche.

ReplyDeleteI have no doubt that his contract is very specific concerning his press obligations. If the producers don't like it, don't sign him. Sucks to be them that Joaquin is a wonderful actor who needs lots of time to himself (much like Keanu Reeves.)
I'd prefer more actors and actresses maintained strict boundaries with the press and fans. I'm so tired of seeing Reese 'Poon trot out her entitled ass to the opening of every candy shop. By the time movies actually come out, I'm so sick of the stars draping themselves all over the media that I have no interest in the film at all.
A little mystery and curiosity goes a long way. Bravo Phoenix and others who can maintain their distance and keep me intrigued.

ReplyDeleteIt's not in the contract. I guarantee it. Actors do not get paid for anything other than the time required for filming, maybe some reshoots and dubbing.

ReplyDeleteI know someone who had a small part in a movie with him. He was not friendly and super quirky.

Tom O'Neill who runs the awards site Goldderby and is an entertainment journalist told a very weird story about interviewing him where he said he and another reporter colleague couldn't talk to Joaquin because he wouldn't make eye contact or look at them. I don't mean to armchair analyze here but there are mental health issues which have symptoms of behavior like that.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen him give an interview where he wasn't strange and had little or nothing to say, so why would they want him--he would not contribute to any kind of promotional effort--when he shows up on the red carpet he looks super uncomfortable--so how would that make anyone want to see the film?
ReplyDeleteThe way I read the blind it makes it sound like he's refusing to do something that's he's contractually obliged to do. If it's NOT in his contract then why should he if he has personal issues with it? Apologies to J.P. if indeed he has mental/emotional challenges. I don't follow his personal life so I'm unaware of any of that. I'm definitely not into bagging on anyone who has actual mental problems.

ReplyDeleteBullshit. Everything is written into actors' contracts, EVERYTHING. Yes, studios get on their knees and beg actors, or they threaten them, to do things beyond the publicity requirements of their contracts. However, every item that can be is nailed down in contracts. Hair color change? It's in the contract. Weight loss? It's in there. Red carpet appearances and talk shows? Oh yes.
Sometimes, as with Miss 'Poon lately, actors are jockeying for a Oscar. Or an actor might really love a film they did (like George Clooney with his latest roles.) THEN they do publicity on their own outside the contract.
But with actors like Christian Bale, Joaquin Pheonix, Keanu Reeves, Ellen Page (actresses rarely are allowed anonymity which is why Ellen's roles are drying up),etc, they are rigid in their contracts about publicity. Good for them!
Guys, he's protecting himself by staying AWAY from the 'Hoopla' part of the gig-he's ONE beer/pill away from going down the rabbit-hole at all times & he's advised to stay away from Openings,Open Bar Festivities,etc. Remember how reluctant Phillip Seymour Hoffman was @ going to SUNDANCE F.Fest/he said not a good time & yet,they pressured him to "just show up" & he was too kind to object..& now look. & he'd already paid for Rehab.
