This acting couple with past sobriety issues actually have a nanny who is also their sober coach and is with them all of the time. It seems to be working. It has been a long struggle for this pair.
i think the 'sober coach' thing is bullshit. it's a babysitter for rich people who, like all addicts, need to quit using, do the work, and stay sober on their own. and when you're getting paid a lot to watch these people, you have a vested interest in keeping your job, which makes you less than objective. i just think it's silly and lazy.
Well, as someone who once nannied, being a "sober coach" actually does sound a lot like being a nanny. Just adjust the height of the charges and the pay grade accordingly.
I would think it would be very hard to stay sober in the industry. There's always an industry party to attend and the free booze flows. I mean FLOWS. The temptation would always be there I think.
@nancer: A sobriety coach can accurately be likened to an adult babysitter, but addicts are also oversized selfish infants by nature. A lot of experts like Father Greg Boyle and Dr James Gilligan argue that shame specifically (which differs from guilt) lies at the root of addiction. Addicts often don't care enough about themselves to stay sober for their own good, so they need some bigger purpose, like faith, frequently. The impulse to get fucked up and the lack of control is what makes an addict an addict. If you can afford it, getting a sobriety coach is a very responsible and dare I say courageous move. Bit pats on the back for this couple.
